On today's special Memorial Day show, we're joined by Patriot Academy's Rick Green, who co-hosts from his campus in the room with the replica of the Texas House of Representatives. In a freewheeling discussion, we talk about the young American Right becoming increasingly like the European Right — reactionary and pained by the Left but with no biblical and constitutional foundation to direct the momentum. He explains the myriad programs offered at Patriot Academy to train youngsters into the legislative process built upon biblical and founding values. It's time to live biblical conservatism rather than meme off it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Senate Bill 6's so-called “kill switch” provision, which would give the Electric Reliability Council of Texas the power to shut off power to large consumers during power grid emergencies, has faced the most attention in a substantial legislative proposal designed to address issues facing the ERCOT power grid. The bill passed 117-24. In other news, Texas public schools are on the verge of garnering a record-breaking increase in state funding after the Senate approved a wide-ranging finance bill on Friday; the city of Dallas is hosting an Expedited Passport Day for residents who need to obtain or renew their passports. The event will take place on Thursday, May 29, in the Flag Room on the sixth floor of Dallas City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents must register in advance and choose a 15-minute time slot. It takes two to three weeks to get the passport through the expedited process. The cost for adults seeking their passports for the first time is $225. It's $190 to renew and $195 for minors. These prices already include the $60 fee for expedited processing. Payments will only be accepted via credit or debit card or money order. Cash is not accepted. All passport applicants, including minors, must be present; and an effort that would force some of Texas' most iconic foods and drinks — including Dr Pepper, Blue Bell Ice Cream and Buc-ee's Famous Beaver Nuggets — to change recipes or label their products as “not recommended for human consumption” was decisively rejected by the Texas House on Sunday. In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin welcomes Bryan Hubbard, a prominent advocate for psychedelic-assisted therapies, particularly ibogaine in the treatment of opioid addiction and mental health disorders. Find full show notes and links here: https://thethirdwave.co/podcast/episode-305/?ref=278 Update (May 2025): Days before this episode's release, the Texas House approved a Senate-backed bill to fund ibogaine research through a public-private partnership aimed at securing FDA approval. This vote marks a major milestone in the movement Bryan describes throughout this conversation. Bryan shares his journey from leading Kentucky's Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission to spearheading breakthrough ibogaine research initiatives in Texas. He articulates ibogaine's unique neurological properties, discussing how it can reset brain neurochemistry in 36 hours and potentially treat conditions from traumatic brain injury to Parkinson's disease. The conversation explores the spiritual dimensions of ibogaine experiences, the political landscape surrounding psychedelic medicine, and Bryan's ongoing efforts to medicalize ibogaine through FDA drug development trials, highlighting Texas as the next frontier for this life-saving research. W. Bryan Hubbard is the Executive Director of the American Ibogaine Initiative. He is the first and former Chairman and Executive Director of the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission. He concurrently served as Special Counsel to the Kentucky Attorney General's Office of Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control and was its prior Executive Director. He served on the Kentucky Judicial Commission on Mental Health, the Kentucky Child Support Guidelines Commission, Mine Safety Review Board, and the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy's Recovery Ready Communities Advisory Council. He previously served as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Income Support wherein he led the Commonwealth's Social Security Disability and Child Support Enforcement systems. He practiced workers' compensation law representing Walmart, Tyson Foods, and Tennessee Valley Authority for sixteen years. During his practice years, he observed the predacious onset of Kentucky's Opioid Epidemic amid generational joblessness, poverty, disability, and substance use. He was raised in Virginia's coalfields and is the proud grandson of two grade-school educated coal miners on whose shoulders he stands. A bill requiring classroom displays of the Ten Commandments in public schools passed the Texas House on Sunday. The 82-46 vote sends the proposal back to the Senate before it goes to Gov. Greg Abbott. In other news, Texas is on the verge of banning the use of nondisclosure agreements to silence sexual abuse survivors after a key House vote Sunday. The ban would prevent NDAs from being used to prevent a survivor of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, human trafficking or child sexual abuse from disclosing their abuse to others; a woman turned herself into police Wednesday following a fatal wrong-way crash in South Dallas earlier this month, police said; and the Dallas Stars now find themselves in a 2-1 hole after a 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman each scored a pair of goals and Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner made 31 saves. It marked the first time the Stars dropped back-to-back playoff games since this matchup against Edmonton last year. Game four of the series will be Tuesday in Edmonton. After sunny, pleasant weather in the middle of the week, rain chances are returning to North Texas Thursday afternoon. Storms are also likely to develop in the afternoon along the Red River, moving south across the region during the late afternoon and evening. These storms have a 50% chance of developing in the Dallas area, bringing hail and damaging winds as their greatest threats. The threat of a tornado will be low but not zero. In other news, A deal on a sweeping plan to pump $8.5 billion to Texas public schools has been struck. A compromise between the Texas House and Senate will maintain the lower $55 per-student increase to the basic allotment but adds an additional $500 million for fixed costs to the plan; Dallas officials do not have a price tag for the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and they won't have one until next year; Fairview residents have filed an appeal challenging the Town Council's approval of a permit allowing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build a temple in their town. The Town Council voted 5-2 April 30 to approve the permit for a temple with a 120-foot spire after a year of contentious debate, a threatened lawsuit and a previous denial of the church's permit request. Little Gov. Dan Patrick says this has been a "boring session" for him. Why would that be? Well, maybe it's because the Texas House is doing just about whatever the right-wing Texas Senate wants even though Speaker Dustin Burrows was elected with a majority Democratic coalition. It will be easier than ever for parents to opt their children out of public school vaccine requirements under a bill given initial passage in the Texas House late Tuesday. In other news, School leaders and advocates worry that the Texas Senate is dragging its feet to deliver on promises to provide the largest infusion of state dollars into public education; after multiple break-ins and animal thefts at Texas zoos in recent years, state zoos have teamed up with advocacy groups and elected officials to support a couple of bills in the Texas Legislature that could provide some relief. House Bill 1720 and Senate Bill 2969 will strengthen the penalties for trespassing at zoological facilities and create penalties surrounding habitat intrusions; and the Dallas Stars are on the verge of eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup playoffs after a 3-1 win at the American Airlines Center last night. With less than a 2 percent chance of landing the first overall pick in Monday evening's NBA draft lottery, the ping pong ball popped up for the Mavericks, securing the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft. With that top pick, it gives Dallas the ability to land Duke's Cooper Flagg, the consensus top selection. In other news, Dallas' Office of Equity and Inclusion, which was heavily featured in the region's human rights proposal required to host next year's FIFA World Cup, could be on the chopping block if a Texas Senate bill intended to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion departments in local governments becomes law; the Texas House overwhelmingly endorsed a bill that would fund a grant program for research and medical trials ibogaine, a centuries-old psychoactive drug derived from a plant indigenous to Central Africa, increasingly viewed by the medical and science community as the next big hope in trauma, depression, addiction and brain injury treatment; and the Dallas Cowboys will open the upcoming NFL season on the road against Super Bowl Champ Philadelphia on Thursday, September 4. Send us a textRecently, David Barton and Matt Krause testified in front of the Texas House of Representatives Public Education committee. Barton and Krause both said some historically questionable things to support the placement of the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom. A premise of this podcast is that it takes faulty history to pursue Christian nationalist goals, one of which is to erode separation of church and state. Texas Representatives John Bryant and James Talarico scrutinized Barton's and Kruse's arguments and determined that placing a Christian version of the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom was unfair and un-American. The episode begins with a passionate appeal by Bryant and Talarico for fairness and ends with an analysis of faulty history which is being used to oppose fairness. Music provided by Earl's Taco Shack (Gulf of Mexico Blues, Nebula); Jeremiah Lawson (Sonata for Guitar in A minor), and Jonus Fair (The Rest is History).Written and produced by Warren ThrockmortonThe podcast will be on break until June. Watch for new episodes with material from Andrew Whitehead, Katherine Stewart, Roger Finke, Jemar Tisby, Jeremie Beller, and much more in the second half of season two.

The Texas House gave initial approval to a bill Thursday that would ban citizens of China, Iran, North Korea and Russia from owning properties in Texas, moving the state one step closer to creating barriers for property ownership to people from countries deemed hostile. On a largely partisan vote of 85-60, the House approved the bill, making it the latest Republican-led policy once considered too extreme for the House now on a direct path to becoming law as the chamber shifts further to the right. In other news, North Texas' Catholic community reacted with surprise and excitement to Thursday's news that Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church; separate bills making their way through the Texas Legislature have banks and consumer advocates on edge, posing challenges to the state's financial infrastructure and its pro-business bent. At issue are two sets of bills regulating credit card processing fees, which collectively set a record of nearly $188 billion last year, according to Nielsen Report data; and the Academy of Country Music Awards — colloquially dubbed country's “party of the year” — assembled many of the genre's biggest stars in Frisco Thursday. The Texas Senate approved a bill Wednesday that takes aim at the State Fair of Texas' gun ban. The policy was put in place last year after a gunman shot three fairgoers in 2023. Tthe bill's author, state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Rockwall, said the move denied “citizens their right to self-defense.” The legislation, headed to the Texas House of Representatives, would prevent contractors from banning guns in government-owned public spaces, unless state law says otherwise. In other news, detainees at the Bluebonnet immigrant detention center in the small city of Anson, about 200 miles west of Dallas sent the outside world a message this week: S-O-S; in a surprising alliance, the Texas oil and gas lobby has joined forces with renewable energy developers to sink a proposal that would require all existing solar and wind generators to guarantee they can provide power when needed; nd the Dallas Stars are one win away from advancing out of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and ending the Colorado Avalanche's season. Texas is one of the country's biggest producers of zero-emissions energy. Last year, the Lone Star State surpassed California to become the country's No. 1 market for utility-scale solar. More solar and batteries were added to the Texas grid in 2024 than any other energy source, and the state has long dominated in onshore wind. But that buildout is now threatened. A new tranche of bills in the Texas House and Senate could impose punitive engineering requirements on wind, solar, and storage plants — even those already in operation — and they could send the state's power bills soaring.Doug Lewin is the founder and CEO of Stoic Energy Partners in Austin, Texas. He writes the Texas Energy and Power Newsletter, and he is the host of the Energy Capital podcast.
