Democracy is fragile today. Yet it is not confined to a single place, a specific country, or a particular political system. The democratic promise remains far from fully realized. Still, we can find hope in the idea that when democracy retreats in one part of the world, it may grow stronger in another. This is “Thinking in Dark Times”, a podcast series by UkraineWorld, an English-language media outlet focused on Ukraine. Host: Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, the chief editor of UkraineWorld, and the president of PEN Ukraine. Guest: Aman Sethi, an Indian journalist and the editor-in-chief of openDemocracy—an independent international media platform based in London. We are recording this conversation during the Lviv Media Forum in May 2025, in Lviv, a city in western Ukraine. You can support our work at: https://www.patreon.com/c/ukraineworld. Your support is vital, as we rely heavily on crowdfunding. You can also contribute to our volunteer missions to frontline areas in Ukraine, where we deliver aid to both soldiers and civilians.

"The History of the World," as described by Ezarh'had Daan Jhae'œn Amarazae, is a telling of the creation story among the Aman'haddi, or marsh Giants that inhabit the Great Dismal Moor along the southeastern borders of Cadraswé. According to the Ezarh'had Daan, he first encountered the Aman'haddi only a few days after beginning his Walk in 795, C.R. While the telling varies from speaker to speaker, the Ezarh'had Daan found this version by a warrior-griot named Ngaj'in to be the most compelling. Ngaj'in, one of the Assi-Wer rangers from the Agwó-Zos "dry-home," sang the version transcribed here as she, a young nameless Jhae'œn, and their companions, recuperated from battle in the ruins of the Aman'haddi's ancestral city. Many regale the tale of that epic battle as the more significant element of his time in the swamps, but in the years since his return to claim the Amarazae seat and face the ensuing catastrophes that befell Agwe, the Ezarh'had Daan insisted that this simple campfire song gave him the insight to survive his walk, and the strength to face what was to come. Here, the Chaugwé Theater is proud to present the first installment of "The History of the World" as originally performed by the late Ngaj'in of Agwó-Zos. Tonight, you will hear the second of nine verses, "The Night's Gentle Stillness. Please take a moment to refresh your beverages. Avoiding tough conversations? Lean in, speak up, and make them count. Ever find yourself avoiding a tough conversation at work because, well…it's just easier? We get it. But what if leaning into discomfort could actually make things better—for you, your team, and your company? In this episode, Kim and Amy sit down with Amandeep (Aman) Kochar, CEO of Baker & Taylor, to talk about how he uses Radical Candor to break down barriers, build trust, and create a culture where feedback fuels growth instead of fear. Aman gets real about his own struggles—navigating leadership as an underrepresented executive, learning to lead with vulnerability, and shifting from pushing change to making space for it. From leading a 200-year-old company through transformation to rethinking power dynamics in leadership, he lays out why transparency matters, how to handle resistance without backing down, and why the best leaders don't just give feedback—they ask for it. The bottom line? Real change starts with real conversations. Ready to ditch the fear and lead with candor? Let's go. Get all of the show notes at RadicalCandor.com/podcast.
