Topics included: what a conscience is (2:57), St. Ignatius of Loyola (9:35), awareness of our shortcomings (16:59), caller: I struggle with OCD (23:20), caller: how can I distinguish between mortal and venial sin? (28:27), email: I find myself committing the same sins (33:11), making time for an examination of conscience (40:23), and caller: I try to thank God for 1 to 3 min a day (42:36).  Resources:  https://scrupulousanonymous.org/ https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/sacraments-and-sacramentals/penance/examinations-of-conscience Pathways of Prayer….The Examen by Fr. Rob KrollAlthough not invented by, or unique to, St. Ignatius, the Consciousness Examen (or, mostcommonly, “the Examen”) is most often associated with him and with the order he founded. The Examen is a prayer of looking back over one's day, reviewing it under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to find the presence and action of God within it. Rather than bracketing the “stuff” of daily life as a distraction to prayer, the Examen invites us to explore and plumb the depth of our day for God'sinvolvement within it. The Examen helps us appreciate where we have seen the face of God or heard God's voice in the midst of ordinary life. An experienced hunter who sees animal tracks in the snow knows that a deer, fox or other creature has passed by. Just so, the Examen helps us identify clues to God's “passing by” when perhaps at the moment we were too busy or distracted to notice. This prayer method, then, assists us to “find God in all things.” Prayed regularly, even daily, it makes us moreattuned to the movements of the Holy Spirit in our life of discipleship.Unlike the Examination of Conscience used before Confession, the Examen's focus is not primarily on sin (although it includes a recognition of sin). This prayer's goal is deep gratitude for God's gifts, and growth in discernment about how well (or poorly) I respond to the will of God in my daily life. The Examen also effects interior transformation and greater freedom because through it I come toknow better both myself and God's dealings with me.St. Ignatius recommended that the Examen be prayed twice daily for about 15 minutes, although doing it once a day in the evening will still be very fruitful. Traditionally there are five steps or movements. Initially they may seem mechanical, but over time the prayer takes on a natural flow. 5 STEPS OF THE EXAMENThis outline is based on St. Ignatius' presentation in the Spiritual Exercises (n. 43), and is adapted fromThe Examen Prayer by Timothy M. Gallagher, OMV.Transition I become aware of God gazing upon me with love as I begin my Examen. Irecall that God has created and ordained all things.Step One: Gratitude I note the gifts that God has given to me this day, thanking God for them. Step Two: Petition I ask God for insight so that this Examen is a work of grace, not mere navel gazing or ruminating over my day. I ask the Holy Spirit to shine His light sothat I review the day with His eyes and guided by grace. Step Three: Review With God, I prayerfully review the day hour by hour with its many activities and encounters. Did I experience something surprising or unusual today: a callor email from a friend I hadn't heard from in years…a painful memory I hadconsidered forgotten…something beautiful in nature…a news story thatmoved or disturbed me…As I walk through my day, I look for the stirrings ofmy heart (feelings) and mind (thoughts). Which have come from God?Normally the Holy Spirit acts to give us peace, joy, strength, encouragement.Which stirrings have clearly not been of God but represent suggestions fromthe enemy? I examine my choices in response to both sets of stirrings. Howdid God delight in me today? How was God proud of me? Step Four: Forgiveness I own honestly any ways that I have turned away from God somehow today, whether by failing to love when an opportunity came long or by activelydoing wrong in thought, word, or deed. I ask for healing and forgiveness fromthe God who removes my heart's burdens. If necessary, I resolve to bringmyself to Confession. Step Five: Renewal The Examen ends by looking ahead to the coming day with hope and confidence, entrusting it to God's grace. With God, I concretely plan how tolive the next day in accord with His loving desire for my life. The Examen helps us grow in self-knowledge as well as in discerning God's presence, action and will indaily life. Through it, we more easily find God in all things and love all things in Christ.

AMDG.  Today we continue a conversation we started with Elizabeth Hoxie in Episode 112 on the Ignatian tenet of care for the whole person.  Far from being a trendy #selfcare fad, cura personalis captures the truth that what we do with ourselves during each day—our intellect, emotions, and bodies—forms us into the saint God wants us to be.  Through intentionality in approaching each day and recognizing that God didn't make us to be frantic, cura personalis can help us avoid the temptation to over-commit regarding some things while under-committing to others.  In this way, we can live out the reality that we are created to love and be loved, to flourish and not just to live symptom-free. With all this in mind, Elizabeth shares her concern for special needs students and gives us a glimpse of how she homeschools. About our gear: N/A About the Topic: Eighth Rule Let one who is in desolation work to be in patience, which is contrary to the vexations which come to him, and let him think that he will soon be consoled, diligently using the means against such desolation, as is said in the sixth rule. Ninth Rule There are three principal causes for which we find ourselves desolate. The first is because we are tepid, slothful, or negligent in our spiritual exercises, and so through our faults spiritual consolation withdraws from us. The second, to try us and see how much we are and how much we extend ourselves in his service and praise without so much payment of consolations and increased graces. The third, to give us true recognition and understanding so that we may interiorly feel that it is not ours to attain or maintain increased devotion, intense love, tears or any other spiritual consolation, but that all is the gift and grace of God our Lord, and so that we may not build a nest in something belonging to another, raising our mind in some pride or vainglory, attributing to ourselves the devotion or the other parts of the spiritual consolation. Tenth Rule Let the one who is in consolation think how he will conduct himself in the desolation which will come after, taking new strength for that time. Eleventh Rule Let one who is consoled seek to humble himself and lower himself as much as he can, thinking of how little he is capable in the time of desolation without such grace or consolation. On the contrary, let one who is in desolation think that he can do much with God's sufficient grace to resist all his enemies, taking strength in his Creator and Lord. Twelfth Rule The enemy acts like a woman in being weak when faced with strength and strong when faced with weakness. For, as it is proper to a woman, when she is fighting with some man, to lose heart and to flee when the man confronts her firmly, and, on the contrary, if the man begins to flee, losing heart, the anger, vengeance and ferocity of the woman grow greatly and know no bounds, in the same way, it is proper to the enemy to weaken and lose heart, fleeing and ceasing his temptations when the person who is exercising himself in spiritual things confronts the temptations of the enemy firmly, doing what is diametrically opposed to them; and, on the contrary, if the person who is exercising himself begins to be afraid and lose heart in suffering the temptations, there is no beast so fierce on the face of the earth as the enemy of human nature in following out his damnable intention with such growing malice. Thirteenth Rule Likewise he conducts himself as a false lover in wishing to remain secret and not be revealed. For a dissolute man who, speaking with evil intention, makes dishonorable advances to a daughter of a good father or to a wife of a good husband, wishes his words and persuasions to be secret, and the contrary displeases him very much, when the daughter reveals to her father or the wife to her husband his false words and depraved intention, because he easily perceives that he will not be able to succeed with the undertaking begun. About our gear: The https://www.amazon.com/Discernment-Spirits-Ignatian-Everyday-Living/dp/0824522915 (book): The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, is one of the most influential spiritual leaders of all time, yet many readers find his Rules for Discernment hard to understand. What can Ignatius teach us about the discernment of spirits that lies at the very heart of Christian life? In The Discernment of Spirits, Fr. Timothy Gallagher, a talented teacher, retreat leader, and scholar, helps us understand the Rules and how their insights are essential for our spiritual growth today. By integrating the Rules and the experience of contemporary people, Gallagher shows the precision, clarity, and insight of Ignatius's Rules, as well as the relevance of his thought for spiritual life today. When we learn to read Ignatius correctly, we discover in his remarkable words our own struggles, joys, and triumphs. This book is for all who desire greater awareness of God's action in their daily spiritual lives, and is essential reading for retreat directors, spiritual directors, priests, and counselors. About the Topic: First Rule In persons who are going from mortal sin to mortal sin, the enemy is ordinarily accustomed to propose apparent pleasures to them, leading them to imagine sensual delights and pleasures in order to hold them more and make them grow in their vices and sins. In these persons the good spirit uses a contrary method, stinging and biting their consciences through their rational power of moral judgment. Second Rule In persons who are going on intensely purifying their sins and rising from good to better in the service of God our Lord, the method is contrary to that in the first rule. For then it is proper to the evil spirit to bite, sadden, and place obstacles, disquieting with false reasons, so that the person may not go forward. And it is proper to the good spirit to give courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations, and quiet, easing and taking away all obstacles, so that the person may go forward in doing good. Third Rule The third is of spiritual consolation. I call it consolation when some interior movement is caused in the soul, through which the soul comes to be inflamed with love of its creator and Lord, and, consequently when it can love no created thing on the face of the earth in itself, but only in the Creator of them all. Likewise when it sheds tears that move to love of its Lord, whether out of sorrow for one's sins, or for the passion of Christ our Lord, or because of other things directly ordered to His service and praise. Finally, I call consolation every increase of hope, faith, and charity, and all interior joy that calls and attracts to heavenly things and to the salvation of one's soul, quieting it and giving it peace in its Creator and Lord. Neville (New York: Longmans, Green and Co., 1907), pp.412-41   O SACRED Heart of Jesus, I adore Thee in the oneness of the Personality of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Whatever belongs to the Person of Jesus, belongs therefore to God, and is to be worshipped with that one and the same worship which we pay to Jesus. He did not take on Him His human nature, as something distinct and separate from Himself, but as simply, absolutely, eternally His, so as to be included by us in the very thought of Him. I worship Thee, O Heart of Jesus, as being Jesus Himself, as being that Eternal Word in human nature which He took wholly and lives in wholly, and therefore in Thee. Thou art the Heart of the Most High made man. In worshipping Thee, I worship my Incarnate God, Emmanuel. I worship Thee, as bearing a part in that Passion which is my life, for Thou didst burst and break, through agony, in the garden of Gethsemani, and Thy precious contents trickled out, through the veins and pores of the skin, upon the earth. And again, Thou hadst been drained all but dry upon the Cross; and then, after death, Thou wast pierced by the lance, and gavest out the small remains of that inestimable treasure, which is our redemption.   My God, my Saviour, I adore Thy Sacred Heart, for that heart is the seat and source of all Thy  tenderest human affections for us sinners. It is the instrument and organ of Thy love. It did beat for us. It yearned over us. It ached for us, and for our salvation. It was on fire through zeal, that the glory of God might be manifested in and by us. It is the channel through which has come to us all Thy overflowing human affection, all Thy Divine Charity towards us. All Thy incomprehensible compassion for us, as God and Man, as our Creator and our Redeemer and Judge, has come to us, and comes, in one inseparably mingled stream, through that Sacred Heart. O most Sacred symbol and Sacrament of Love, divine and human, in its fulness, Thou didst save me by Thy divine strength, and Thy human affection, and then at length by that wonder-working blood, wherewith Thou didst overflow.   O most Sacred, most loving Heart of Jesus, Thou art concealed in the Holy Eucharist, and Thou beatest for us still. Now as then Thou savest, Desiderio desideravi—"With desire I have desired." I worship Thee then with all my best love and awe, with my fervent affection, with my most subdued, most resolved will. O my God, when Thou dost condescend to suffer me to receive Thee, to eat and drink Thee, and Thou for a while takest up Thy abode within me, O make my heart beat with Thy Heart. Purify it of all that is earthly, all that is proud and sensual, all that is hard and cruel, of all perversity, of all disorder, of all deadness.
