This lecture discusses key ideas from the 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant's work of ethics, The Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. Specifically it examines his discussion of the distinction between three modes of presenting what he terms the "principle of morality" - one focused upon universality of the maxim of one's will, one on treating human beings as ends not just as means, and another focused upon a possible kingdom of ends. Matt Zigler is a teacher, artist, and maker. He is currently the Bullis Innovation and Technology Lab (BITlab) Coordinator at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, where he works with students and teachers to bring design thinking and the Maker process into traditional content area classes, teach Maker related classes, and oversees a state of the art Makerspace and Fab Lab. Matt has presented on how to design and build a Makerspace that meets the needs of specific schools, how to create a culture of Making and innovation, and how to develop Maker programming for all levels of ability, K-12. The Maker movement has been an excellent opportunity for people to become producers rather than just consumers, and schools are recognizing the value of offering students the tools, materials, and skills necessary to design sophisticated and meaningful projects. But teaching technical skills should not be the end goal: At its best, a Maker education teaches students to think and act in creative ways that can be applied to difficult challenges in all areas of life. Matt's book Three Modes of Making (release date Dec 23/Jan 24) provides a framework for Maker courses in upper grades that teach students creative-process skills through three key Maker modes: Imitation, Modification, and Innovation. On this episode, we discuss the three Maker modes and their associated skill sets to provide educators with ideas for helping students be creatively purposeful.Matt's class also created The Wheelchair Stroller project, and his students ended up all over the news, including NBC Washington and the CBS Evening News!Listen to more ideas from Matt on Ep 211Connect with Matt:Website mattzigler.comTwitter @BullisBITlabMedium medium.com/@matthewziglerChris Woods is the host of the STEM Everyday Podcast... O winner of wealth, now please listen as I tell you in detail of the different kinds of understanding and determination, according to the three modes of material nature. O son of Pṛthā, that understanding by which one knows what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, what is to be feared and what is not to be feared, what is binding and what is liberating, is in the mode of goodness. O son of Pṛthā, that understanding which cannot distinguish between religion and irreligion, between action that should be done and action that should not be done, is in the mode of passion.. That understanding which considers irreligion to be religion and religion to be irreligion, under the spell of illusion and darkness, and strives always in the wrong direction, O Pārtha, is in the mode of ignorance. O son of Pṛthā, that determination which is unbreakable, which is sustained with steadfastness by yoga practice, and which thus controls the activities of the mind, life and senses is determination in the mode of goodness. But that determination by which one holds fast to fruitive results in religion, economic development and sense gratification is of the nature of passion, O Arjuna. And that determination which cannot go beyond dreaming, fearfulness, lamentation, moroseness and illusion – such unintelligent determination, O son of Pṛthā, is in the mode of darkness.....
Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them. Foods dear to those in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome, and pleasing to the heart. Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. Such foods cause distress, misery and disease. Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness....
Material nature consists of three modes – goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes. O sinless one, the mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge. The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings, O son of Kuntī, and because of this the embodied living entity is bound to material fruitive actions. O son of Bharata, know that the mode of darkness, born of ignorance, is the delusion of all embodied living entities. The results of this mode are madness, indolence and sleep, which bind the conditioned soul. O son of Bharata, the mode of goodness conditions one to happiness; passion conditions one to fruitive action; and ignorance, covering one's knowledge, binds one to madness...
Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman, philosopher, and writer who lived from 1584 to 1645. He was renowned for his skills in the art of sword-fighting and wrote the famous book “The Book of Five Rings”, which is still studied by martial artists today. Musashi was also known for his distinctive fighting style, which involved using two swords simultaneously. He was considered one of the greatest swordsmen in Japanese history. The Book of Five Rings is a treatise on swordsmanship and martial arts written by Miyamoto Musashi. IMHO the top five concepts introduced in the book include: No Mind The Void Three Modes of Attack The Way of the Sword The Five Rings No-Mind The concept of “no-mind”, or mushin, which is the state of being completely focused and free from distractions or emotions. No-mind or mushin is the idea that a martial artist should be able to remain focused and free from distractions or emotions during combat. Musashi believed that this state of mind was essential for success in battle, as it allowed the martial artist to respond quickly and decisively to any situation. He wrote that “the primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy's cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this.” The Void The concept of “the void”, or mushin, which is the state of being empty and free from preconceived notions or expectations. The concept of “the void” or mushin is the idea that a martial artist should be empty and free from preconceived notions or expectations during combat. Musashi believed that this state of mind was essential for adaptability and flexibility in battle, as it allowed the martial artist to respond to any situation without being limited by preconceived notions or expectations. He wrote that “the void is not emptiness. It is rather a place of potential, a space that can be filled with any number of possibilities. When you are in the void, you are able to see all options clearly and choose the best course of action without being influenced by your own desires or expectations.” “The Void is not emptiness. It is rather a place of potential, a space that can be filled with any number of possibilities.” Three Modes of Attack Musashi discusses three different modes of attack in The Book of Five Rings: the “direct” mode, the “indirect” mode, and the “combined” mode. The direct mode “Ken no sen” involves attacking an opponent directly and with full force, using powerful strikes and techniques. The indirect mode “Tai no sen” involves using feints and other tactics to trick the opponent and create openings for attack. The combined mode “Tai tai no sen” involves using a combination of direct and indirect attacks in order to keep the opponent off balance and gain the upper hand. The Way of the Sword The concept of “the way of the sword” is the idea that the pursuit of martial arts should be a lifelong journey of learning and self-improvement. Musashi believed that this was the key to success in combat, as it allowed the martial artist to continually improve and adapt to changing circumstances. He wrote that “the way of the sword is not just about mastering a particular technique or style. It is about constantly seeking to improve and grow as a martial artist. It is about never being satisfied with your current level of skill, and always striving to become better. The way of the sword is a lifelong journey, and those who follow it will find that they are always learning and growing.” The Five Rings The concept of “the five rings”, which are the five elements of strategy that Musashi believed were essential to success in martial arts: the earth, water, fire, wind, and void. While the Lord recognizes all modes of giving - you give your desired amount, you give according to what is asked of you and you give all and out of your own need. [Luke 21:1-4, Monday of the 34th Week in the Ordinary Time]
Krishna instructs Arjuna about the ultimate knowledge yoga masters have achieved. He explains he is "the seed-giving father" and that nature is "the womb." All beings come forth from the combination of the two. The three gunas - sattva, rajas, and tamas are based upon a person's disposition. The gunas keep the eternal Self-bound to the physical body. Sattva binds by attachment to knowledge and joy, rajas by passion and activity, and tamas by laziness and sleep. Of the three, sattva has the power to uplift a person and lead to enlightenment because it is connected to wisdom. The other two create stasis or drag a person down. To break free from the clutches of these gunas, Shree Krishna reveals a simple solution to Arjun, which is to attach his mind to God. He says: since the Supreme Lord is unaffected by these three modes, whosoever attaches their mind to God, also rises from the material to the divine level. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message
(Verse 20) How one can stay in the transcendental position, even in this body, in full Krsna consciousness, is explained in this verse. Although one is within this material body, by his advancement in spiritual knowledge he can be free from the influence of the modes of nature. . He can enjoy the happiness of spiritual life even in this body. (Verse 26) we detach ourselves from the gunas by attaching ourselves to something higher, which is Ishvara. It is like the child who gives up his toys because he loves poetry now that he is a teenager. Having made Ishvara our only goal, and having maintained such an awareness throughout our life, we become fit to attain brahman. (Verse 27) Shri Krishna unequivocally confirms that the panacea for the disease of the three guṇas is to engage in unwavering devotion to the personal form of the Supreme Lord. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message
—(Verse17) This shloka point out the self reinforcing nature of actions and gunaas. If we consciously perform sattvic actions day after day, we will generate a greater proportion of sattva in our mind, which will further spur sattvic actions. This is the logic behind karma yoga. By urging us to perform selfless actions, Shri Krishna wants us to rise from our rajasic and tamasic existence to one of greater sattva. (Verse 19) If we attach our mind to any personality or object within the realm of the three guṇas, it results in increasing their corresponding color on our mind and intellect. However, if we attach our mind to the divine realm, it transcends the guṇas and becomes divine. Those who understand this principle start loosening their relationship with worldly objects and people, and strengthening it, through bhakti, with God. This enables them to transcend the three guṇas, and attain the divine nature of God. —Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message
(Verse 10) Shri Krishna now explains how the same individual's temperament oscillates amongst the three guṇas. These three guṇas are present in the material energy, and our mind is made from the same energy. Hence, all three guṇas are present in our minds as well. Although there are these three modes of material nature, if one is determined he can be blessed by the mode of goodness, and by transcending the mode of goodness he can be situated in pure goodness, which is called the Vasudeva state, a state in which one can understand the science of God. By the manifestation of particular activities, it can be understood in what mode of nature one is situated. (Verse 16) The law of karma holds true in every situation, including this one. If we perform rajasic actions, we will attain temporary joy, which will eventually generate sorrow. And if we perform tamasic actions, we will continue to live our lives in inertness and ignorance. Only through sattvic actions will we create a state of purity and serenity in our minds. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message
(Verse 7) Shri Krishna now explains the working of rajo guṇa, and how it binds the soul to material existence. Shri Krishna describes its principal manifestation as attachment and desire. The way to break out of this is to engage in karma yog, i.e. to begin offering the results of one's activities to God. This creates detachment from the world and pacifies the effect of rajo guṇa. (Verse 8) Tamo guṇa is the antithesis of sattva guṇa. Persons influenced by it get pleasure through sleep, laziness, intoxication, violence, and gambling. They lose their discrimination of what is right and what is wrong. In this way, the mode of ignorance leads the soul deeper into the darkness of ignorance. It becomes totally oblivious of its spiritual identity, its goal in life, and the opportunity for progress that the human form provides. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message
The living entities conditioned by material nature are of various types. One is happy, another is very active, and another is helpless. All these types of psychological manifestations are causes of the entities' conditioned status in nature. How they are differently conditioned is explained in this section of Bhagavad-gita. The mode of goodness is first considered. The mode of goodness is serene and illuminating. Thus, sattva guṇa engenders virtue in one's personality and illuminates the intellect with knowledge. It makes a person become calm, satisfied, charitable, compassionate, helpful, serene, and tranquil. It also nurtures good health and freedom from sickness. This sense of happiness is due to the understanding that, in the mode of goodness, one is more or less free from sinful reactions. Actually, in the Vedic literature, it is said that the mode of goodness means greater knowledge and a greater sense of happiness. The difficulty here is that when a living entity is situated in the mode of goodness, he becomes conditioned to feel that he is advanced in knowledge and is better than others. In this way, he becomes conditioned. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message

This records some very squeaky snow as well as the formative ideas about the nature of sin. It may be of interest to listeners who found the Three Modes of Sin engaging.

Do cringe back at your shallow "feelings-oriented" charismatic days? Or do you roll your eyes at the arrogant rigidity of your doctrinal upbringing? Or perhaps you shake your head at your former ignorance of church history and tradition? Or maybe your faith has finally come alive after years stuck in a dusty and dead high church? Whatever your situation it seems as though Christians follow a familiar path when it comes to shifts in theology and practice. Bryan and Paul discuss these familiar patterns by engaging with an article by Dr. Scott Redd titled, "Three Modes of Christian Formation: Experience, Doctrine, and Liturgy." Also Paul says some awkward things. Show Notes Read Dr. Redd's article

Professor Micheal Mann (pictured) is famous for his renowned "hockey stick" that gave a near-perfect image of what is happening with regard to the climate crisis. The American professor has been watching closely what has been happening at COP26 in Glasgow and has said pledges given so far have been encouraging and all that was needed now was for countries to "walk their talk". Professor Tim Flannery is currently in Glasgow as was one of the guests in an event staged by Conversation at the Crossroads, "Can Climate Catastrophe be Averted". With a new electric vehicles strategy and more money for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, Scott Morrison would appear to be announcing policies to help the nation reach its net-zero emissions goal by 2050. But do these policies represent a true change of heart for the Coalition, or are they just pamphlets with little action attached? Check out a podcast from The Guardian - "Scott Morrison's hollow climate campaigning". Fr. Steve and Ashley continue discussing Ignatian prayer, this time talking about St. Ignatius' Three Modes of Discernment. This second set of rules includes spiritual advice for discernment during times of spiritual consolation. In discernment, we are always choosing between two real goods. In this episode, Fr. Gallagher discusses the Three Modes, and in particular the we discuss "The First Mode": When there is a clarity without doubting. Sometimes the right decision is unmistakably clear. We know what the right choice is. This knowledge is a gift from God. All we need do is act on what we know to be the right direction. Often this takes some time. We put off acting on what we know we should do. The post DWG7 – “What am I to do?” The Discernment of God's Will in Everyday Decisions w/Fr.
