Cheetahs, the fastest mammals on Earth, are now in a race against extinction. It’s estimated that fewer than 7,000 exist in the wild. John Yang speaks with Laurie Marker, a woman who has already helped dramatically reduce one threat to cheetahs and is tackling new ones that have emerged, for our Weekend Spotlight. In honor of National Park Week and Earthday 2025, we are supporting OUR national parks by sharing stories about what we love about the parks that we all collectively own (the most beautiful and ecologically significant wild places/habitats in the nation...and in the world, as some earned UNESCO World Heritage Site designations), to help encourage Americans to ask for political support to stop trump and musk/DOGE from defunding OUR parks and to stop firing our hard-working park rangers and staff who are our park defenders. In this 28 minute episode I talk about an Atlanta group of women I'm working with on National Park support projects via an Intown Women's Resistance group. They helped send in stories from people around the nation of people talking about parks they love and why (like Cumberland Island NP in GA, and Arches NP in Utah, and me talking about seeing bison and interviewing wolf biologist Rick McIntyre in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley). We encourage you all to share your own park memories with friends and on social media, and to contact your federal Senators and Representatives to demand they protect park employee jobs and fully fund the national parks, and any park programs associated with climate mitigation and DEI, and protect all OUR public lands (some of which are now threatened with being sold to private owners/industries, snuck into a recent Republican budget bill). We must stay vigilant. Since her birth in February, Asian baby elephant Tula-tu has become a star attraction at the Oregon Zoo. Asian elephants are endangered, with roughly 40,000 of them remaining in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. With all the attention Tula-tu has been getting, it’s easy to overlook the presence of Chendra, a Bornean elephant who has been in the zoo’s care for more than 25 years and whose relatives in the wild are even more at risk of extinction. Only about a thousand Bornean elephants remain, mostly in the forested northern tip of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. For more than a decade, the Oregon Zoo has been supporting efforts to help save Bornean elephants. Last month, the zoo sponsored a symposium in Borneo attended by government officials; NGOs that are helping to protect habitat and reduce conflicts between people and elephants; representatives from the palm oil and tourism industries and other participants. At the symposium, the Sabah Wildlife Department launched a new plan co-developed by the Oregon Zoo to care for the growing number of calves and juvenile elephants that are being separated from their herds or found orphaned, like Chendra. Dr. Sharon Glaeser is the Oregon Zoo’s elephant conservation lead. She joins us with more details about the fight to save the world’s smallest elephant.
True leaders create space for individuals to be passionate about their work and feel a sense of ownership. Nobody wants to be managed, bossed or supervised. We must inspire creativity in our people. Those ideas are the backbone of a culture of continuous improvement and a culture where people feel like they matter. I have so many impressions about my new documentary to think about. I uploaded it on YouTube, a few days ago. I finally had the time to prepare the description and title for the film. It ties in perfectly with this particular episode, where Thomas described, the dangerous situation he found himself in. Besides today's podcast, you can listen to more details in my older episodes. Scroll back to Episode #17 titled “Undertow at the Beach” and #18 “Home Birth-Faith Tested.” Because I have both German, and English listeners, I have tried my best to translate each paragraph. After living in Germany for more than 50 years, I still had to look up some of the words. The day of this tape recording in Berlin, I was standing next to Thomas, and we were taking turns talking. So on with the story where I left off last week. Thomas' words were; “Adieu to societies norm, we are heading for the hills.”Here's the link to my new film, titled "Finding Purpose," Beautiful Masterpiece about True Love" https://youtu.be/7xRQhWdEpOc?si=LvM_pyqZg1LUVbtu

Homegrown businesses in Africa are developing a new industry to tackle the environmental damage created by fast fashion. Upcycling, where poor-quality, discarded clothes are made into desirable products, is becoming more widespread in countries like Kenya, supported by the social enterprise group Africa Collect Textiles. Here workers are earning an income and forging a sustainable industry. African countries like Kenya often bear the brunt of fast fashion waste. The group Clean Up Kenya says the country imports around 200,000 tons of used textiles each year. Africa Collect Textiles (ACT), which operates in Nigeria as well as Kenya, says the problem is that many developing countries lack the infrastructure to dispose of textile waste in an environmentally friendly way. ACT focuses on processing textile waste. It's set up collection bins in high-traffic areas like malls and universities where people can easily dispose of old clothes. These are collected, and in the workshop, they're sorted according to their quality and wearability. ACT's Natalie Naina says, "Since our goal is to extend fabric life, we have created a reseller program outside Nairobi where these clothes can still go ahead in circularity by vendors who would want cheaper options of bales (referring to bundles of clothes) rather than the more expensive ones in Gikomba (one of Kenya's largest clothes markets). Then for our non-wearables, we have repurposed them through upcycling. Upcycling involves getting a cloth that is worn out and then transforming it into a better product where it can survive for longer." Naina says even donated clothes often end up in landfills and that's what the organization is trying to avoid. On its website, Africa Collect Textiles claims that since it was set up in 2020 it has collected nearly 200,000 kilograms of clothes, saved 1,200 tons of carbon and created 200 jobs for local people. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
Dr. Friday explains the benefits of 529 savings plans, including the ability to contribute five years’ worth of gifting at once. She highlights how these funds can grow tax-free for future educational expenses. Transcript: G’day, I’m Dr. Friday, president of Dr. Friday’s Tax and Financial Firm. To get more info, go to www.drfriday.com. This is a one-minute moment. A 529 plan. That is something that I find is great if you happen to have a fairly big family or some very nice grandparents. One of the laws that they’ve passed is that you can actually give up to five years’ worth of gifting into a 529 in one year. So, for example, if it’s $17,000—this year’s actually $18,000—but let’s say they want to give five years’ worth or $85,000. They could do it all at once, not worry about the gifting laws, and put it into that 529 to grow for later, for where your children are going to go to school. Very important. These funds can even be used for secondary or even preschool if necessary. You can catch the Dr. Friday Call-In Show live every Saturday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. right here on 99.7 WTN.

15.11.24What Happens Next? Can Good Stories Help Save the Planet? | 97 When it comes to climate change, data alone often fails to inspire action. But across the Indo-Pacific, communities are reframing climate communication by shifting from statistics to human-centred storytelling. This episode of “What Happens Next?” explores how real stories of resilience, innovation and traditional knowledge are adding new plotlines to the narrative of climate change, helping us understand its impacts on a deeper level. Host Dr Susan Carland speaks with frontline storytellers who are amplifying local voices – from communities adapting to rising sea levels to Indigenous leaders drawing on age-old wisdom to combat environmental challenges. Expert outline how these narratives bridge the gap between global issues and local experiences, making climate science relevant to daily life. You'll hear about groundbreaking projects like Monash University's Global Immersion Guarantee program, which sends students to witness climate impacts firsthand, and RISE (Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments), a collaborative effort combining traditional and modern methods to address climate challenges in challenging urban environments. By focusing on the lived experiences of those directly affected, the episode highlights how storytelling can transform climate awareness into meaningful action. Tune in to discover why the stories we tell might just help save the planet. A full transcript of this episode is available on Monash Lens. In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the pressing issue of plastic pollution and highlights a promising biological solution involving African mealworms. The episode focuses on the Kenyan lesser mealworm, a larval form of the Alphitobius darkling beetle, which has shown the ability to break down polystyrene, commonly known as styrofoam. This capability is attributed to the unique microbes and bacteria in the mealworms' gut. Researchers are studying these gut bacteria to identify specific communities that facilitate the degradation of plastic materials. Key findings from the research indicate that the mealworms can effectively digest polystyrene when provided with a nutrient-rich diet, such as bran, alongside the styrofoam. This balanced diet appears to enhance the production of the necessary bacteria and enzymes to break down plastic. The study revealed significant shifts in bacterial composition based on the mealworms' diet, suggesting that the gut microbiome adapts to optimize plastic degradation. The episode emphasizes the potential of harnessing these naturally occurring bacteria and enzymes for large-scale applications in plastic waste management, particularly in regions like Africa, where plastic waste poses significant environmental challenges. By isolating and utilizing these microbial communities, there is hope for developing innovative methods to biologically process plastic waste, reducing reliance on harmful chemical recycling methods. The podcast presents a hopeful perspective on using biological solutions, like the African mealworm, to combat plastic pollution and promote environmental conservation. Every American red wolf alive right now is descended from only 14 canids. In the 1970s, humans drove the red wolf to the brink of extinction. Because of that, red wolves today have low genetic diversity. But what if we could recover that diversity ... using "ghost genes"? That's right, today's episode is a ghost story. Along the way, we get into gene dictionaries, the possibilities of poo and how a photo of a common Texas coyote started it all.Have another animal you want us to dig into for a future episode? But the program is threatened and could go away. One of the state's primary organizations trying to assure that doesn't happen is Gathering Waters, Wisconsin's Alliance for Land Trusts. Charlie Carlin, Gathering Waters director of strategic initiatives, walks Debra Fitzgerald through what happened, why the program is threatened and what people can do to help save it.
