When Tom Foreman was young, he was a competitive runner in all the races he entered. And he barely trained for these races. But he stopped running for years. Then his daughter asked him to help her train for a marathon. He went on from that to run four half-marathons, three full marathons, and a 50 mile ultramarathon in the space of a year. He documented his experience with a book titled, My Year of Running Dangerously. Since that year, he has gone on to run marathons and ultramarathons, including the Boston Marathon. And he has the mindset to keep going as far as he can in his running journey.

Tom believes all runners should add some trail running to their training and he explains why this in the case. From another #nowatchme believer, this is solid advice for runners to listen to. I invited Tom Foreman on the podcast to philosophize about running, goals, and racing throughout life. You might recognize Tom as an emmy-award winning journalist at CNN. He's reported on wars, natural disasters, and political skirmishes across 20 countries. He's also quite the runner. Author of My Year of Running Dangerously, Tom has a handful of marathons and ultramarathons under his belt and is chasing a BQ soon at the Cincinnati Marathon. More than anything, Tom has a unique perspective on what running means at various stages of life. Speaking with Tom is always a treat so I hope you enjoy this conversation. I think it will bring you new appreciation for running!
To mark Father’s Day, Sarah and co-host Adrienne Martini are joined by Tom Foreman, a CNN correspondent and author of My Year of Running Dangerously, which chronicles his return to running to train for a marathon with his older daughter. Tom talks about what it meant to have the shared language of running with his daughter, as well as the quality time together away from distractions. This now-ultramarathoner shares advice about keeping relationships strong and lines of communication despite hours spent running. A newly minted empty-nester, Tom shares how he and his wife (the proud finisher of her first half-marathon!) are “re-setting” who they are as a couple. While he admits he no longer runs “dangerously,” he’s still striving for a big goal: a Boston-qualifying marathon time. Sarah and Adrienne give this father runner plenty of advice, including selling him on hiring a coach and counseling him on BQ race choice.
