Annie Villareal, the vibrant force behind the Rippedgrandma brand, is not your typical personal trainer. With a background in pharmaceutical sales, Annie took a leap of faith 17 years ago, embarking on a journey of personal reinvention. Inspired by her love for sports and movement, she shed 60 pounds, rediscovered her passion for running, and even completed the Big Sur Marathon at the age of 50. Annie's fitness journey didn't stop there. Armed with a diverse fitness background including yoga, Pilates, strength training, and more, she became a beacon of inspiration for those seeking a functional and holistic approach to fitness. Her training philosophy is rooted in post-rehab work, specializing in shoulders, hips, and low back issues—the "big 3" as she calls them. In 2019, just before the global pandemic hit, Annie created a space dedicated to keeping aging adults strong and fully functional. Now, Annie's average client age is 75. Beyond the gym, Annie found solace and passion in outrigger canoeing, fostering a sense of family and competition. Her mantra, encapsulated in the Hawaiian word "Imua," reflects her commitment to moving forward with strength, grace, and a touch of fun. Annie Villareal is not just a personal trainer; she's a testament to the transformative power of embracing movement and competition at every stage of life. Topics Annie shares with Elizabeth include how becoming active again was not an easy or quick transition, the importance of moving move every day, working with older clients, ways to improve balance, lifting weight that challenges you, Annie's 15-minute strength workouts, rucking, and her love of outrigger canoeing. We are back! (Took both a podcasting #springbreak during April and am feeling refreshed and excited for what's next!)This episode is with Amanda Earl - a running pal for a few years now. Amanda discusses how she got into running, then trail running, then ultra trail running while living in DC on this episode. Quite the progression! We also spend a lot of the episode discussing Amanda's most recent race - the Big Sur Marathon. I've fact checked the elevation gain, and officially it is 2,182 over the course of the 26.2 miles (but many internet runners report that they believe it is more). Amanda discusses how she prepared for this race, dealing with injury mid training cycle, and the race experience itself - think 3am pitch dark bus rides with no cell service and a piano man several miles in. We talk about running as a de-stressor from DC work life, Pacers Running marathon training community, and big next goals. I really appreciate Amanda's curiosity drive in the running space, and I hope you do too. Thanks to you for listening, Dan Hoffman for the soundtrack, and Amanda for the conversation. Enjoy! (PS: The podcast is enough episodes deep for a post race beer!)

“Hitting the Wall 1.0” Adapted from Chasing the Sage, by Bud LambThe BIG IDEAWhen you hit the wall running a marathon, it feels like you have run face-first into a stack of bricks. Your legs start feeling like concrete posts, every step is a triumph of will, and you seriously doubt that the race has a finish line.Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck. Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can't find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me. Psalm 69:1-2 NLTPhysically, the first time I hit The Wall running was in the Big Sur Marathon at about mile marker 20. My legs felt like hamburger, my arms like lead, my head was in a fog. I felt like quitting.Near the Carmel Highlands, when I was about to cash in my chips, my friend Al Polly -- an elite, but injured marathoner who was not able to run this race -- came out of nowhere and started running alongside me. Al ran with me and paced me in to finish my first marathon. In my late 20's I hit the Wall of Life. That is, I was flunking out of college because of my growing addictions and I had no vision for those two questions that can keep us awake at night. “Who am I and what am I doing?” I was about to cash in my chips and I hit The Wall.Scholars (beginning with Blaise Pascal) say we have a God-shaped hole in our hearts which nothing but God can fill, yet we try to fill it with all sorts of counterfeits. These counterfeits never deliver and only drive us to The Wall.I remember reading books that I thought would help me. Books on spiritual things such as The Tibetan Book of the Dead, books on transcendental meditation, The Prophet by Kalil Gibran, Jonathan Living Seagull by Richard Bach, poetry by Richard Brautigan, Be Here Now by Ram Das, and finally, The Holy Bible.Nothing I read captured my attention or came close to the hole in my heart until I began to read about Jesus and His teaching.Out of gas and short on hope, I found Jesus, like Al Polly, running alongside me. Jesus ran me in the rest of the way.How did He do that?Well, He came to me. God comes to us when we are broken, lost, and out of gas.Next, I said “Yes” and accepted His invitation to run with me. I've been running with Jesus ever since. Ultimately this movement from orphan to son begins and ends with saying “Yes” to Jesus' invitation.Come to Me (Jesus) all who are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28The Bible is very clear about this adoption process....all who believed him (Jesus) and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12This isn't about being good enough. It's about accepting a gift. For me, it was a gift I hardly understood. What I did know was that I needed help. Just like in the marathon, I recognized my powerlessness to proceed on my own. I needed help making positive strides and making progress. The same with my soul, my life; I needed help and only God could fill that hole in my heart. All other attempts to fill that void just sucked me deeper and deeper into a black hole.Jesus, speaks to every orphan, saying to us today - No, I will not abandon you as orphans - I will come to you. John 14:18Over these past 40 years as an adopted son of God, I've hit the wall many times. As a runner, I'm slow but steady. On my spiritual journey, it's the same. God is the picture of patience and meets us where we are on the road -- not where we think we should be. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Her memoir, Believe! which follows her amazing odyssey through deep loss, grief, love and life, has attracted the support of  award-nominated screenplay writer Scott Marshall Smith ("Men of Honor”). Scott describes her “Tragic meets Magic” story as “A gossamer web of small, yet profound miracles that add up to something much more wondrous than their sum." He adds that, “Lisa’s powerful story is filled with magical movie moments!" Lisa’s passion for writing began over a decade ago when she began writing after losing her high-school sweetheart, husband, and soul mate of 27 years to brain cancer. A survivor at heart, she processed her pain by putting pen to paper.  Lisa has inspired people from all over the world to "Believe!" in love and the power of positive affirmations while manifesting the life of their dreams. Her miraculous story has inspired students to tap into the power that lies within. The methodologies she teaches tie together with a lifetime of lived wisdom and what she has learned from working with people through individual coaching, group coaching, and multiple retreats. Her work teaches the proven power of positive affirmations and manifesting through the heart, the body’s greatest neurotransmitter.   Through her coaching, Lisa has helped people find love and deeper intimacy in their lives, and throughout her coaching it has become clear that so many of us feel like the human experience is wrought with hardship and loss. “There is so much in life we cannot control – but we CAN control the way we channel our suffering into our growth.” Lisa’s inspirational memoir, Believe! supports this idea through its powerful story.  Lisa is the President and founder of Believe! International, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps promote the powerful messages and methodologies behind “Believe!” Lisa created Believe! International’s flagship project, the Heart of Manifestation workshop and retreats, with her partner, author Cher Slatter-Barlevi (Dog of God) to feed her passion for teaching positive principles of loving awareness. The retreats are designed to help individuals open their minds and hearts to a higher consciousness and manifest their desires. She is also the founder of Sacred Soulmates, heart-centered coaching and exotic vacation retreats for couples and singles calling for a deeper, more intimate and passionate soul connection. Lisa has a second book conceived, based on the highly successful, life-changing Heart of Manifestation retreats, workshops, and inspirational teachings. Her inspirational story is being developed as a 2021 TEDx talk called, “Are you really Open to Love.” Lisa has been featured on various podcasts, YoniVerse Monologues  and at conferences as an expert in love, intimacy, and rebirth. Imagine doing everything right with your health and fitness, being in peak shape, and enjoying a super successful career announcing at the start and finish lines of some of the top marathons and races in the country, and then being slammed with a cancer diagnosis. What do you do? If you’re Fitz Koehler, you become even more of an inspiration. In 2019, Fitz found a cancerous lump in her breast just seven weeks after a clear mammogram. True to form, she immediately began treatment,  including chemo, to wage an all-out war against the cancer. The treatment was exhausting and debilitating. Did she take time off? No! She got on the phone to the race directors, informed them of her diagnosis, and then told them she would still be showing up for the races. And she did.  Fitz announced at all of her scheduled races, even when literally losing her hair while doing so. She continued to fly around the country, sometimes spending entire nights on bathroom floors, but she still showed up at the races where she both gave and got energy from the athletes.  Fitz is now cancer-free and shares her story and amazing outlook on life and running in this motivating episode with Coach Claire.  Fitz Koehler, M.S.E.S.S. is one of the most prominent and compelling fitness experts and race announcers in America. As the voice of the Los Angeles Marathon, Philadelphia Marathon, Big Sur Marathon, DC Wonder Woman Run Series, and more, she brings big structure, energy, and joy to sport. She’s also passionate about guiding others to live better and longer through her company, Fitzness®. Fitz has appeared on national media outlets and has worked as a speaker and spokesperson for corporations like Disney® and Office Depot®. She has also inspired millions of kids to get active through her successful school running/walking program, The Morning Mile®. Fitz enjoys water sports, strength training, animals, hugs, sarcasm, and travel. She lives in Gainesville, Florida with her husband and two kids.   Questions Fitz is asked:          4:53 Besides being a fitness professional, one of the things that you are most well-known for is race announcing.  Can you tell us how you started and what exactly is involved?   7:48 You had a really full race schedule and were doing great. You’re absolutely uber-fit, and then all of a sudden, after doing everything right, you were hit with a cancer diagnosis. Can  you talk about what your life was like just before your diagnosis? Did you feel invincible?   8:43 You had just had a clear mammogram a couple months earlier before your cancer diagnosis.   10:04 Can you tell us how the cancer diagnosis, that first few weeks, how it affected you and your family?   11:21 You’re known for being a positive person who encourages people all the time, and you had to deliver some pretty bad news. How was that?   12:49 You had a full race calendar, and after you made that video announcing your diagnosis you had to make some phone calls to the race directors that were expecting you to show up. What was that like?    14:47 As you were announcing the March 2019 LA marathon, your hair began to fall out during the race.  Can you talk about that?   17:16 Obviously losing your hair has got to be difficult for anyone, but you chose specifically not to wear a wig and embrace your baldness. Can you talk about that?   18:54 How many races did you end up announcing during your treatment?  And how difficult was it?   20:55 How did you have the confidence to call races? Anybody would have understood if you said, “Look, I’m just too sick. I’m going to take a pass.” How did you know that it was going to be okay?   21:33 Clearly your own exercise routine was thrown way out of whack by cancer.  How did your exercise change and how did you build back up?   24:46 Why don't you like pink ribbons?   26:23 Coming full circle, you were back announcing the 2020 LA Marathon.  Can you explain what that was like?   27:52 Now that you are cured of cancer, your life has no doubt been completely changed with the cancellation of races due to the virus.  How have you used this time instead?   29:50 Tell us what the title of your book is and when it comes out.   31:45 What’s your advice on what to say to somebody who announces a diagnosis like yours?   33:28 What’s your next race on the calendar?   Questions I ask everyone:   33:52 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   34:46 What is the greatest gift running has given you?   35:11  Where can listeners connect with you?   Quotes by Fitz:   “First of all, I whip them into a frenzy and then I yell, ‘Go!’ because we do not do boring races. And then I’m there at the finish line to welcome them home, and my intention is to make every single finisher feel like they won the damn thing, and if somebody goes home feeling disappointed, then I haven’t done my job.”   “Part of my platform as a fitness expert has always been annual exams, self-exams, and personally I felt like, ‘Gee whiz, if I ever have one cancer cell in my body, I want to know about it instantly so I could slaughter it.’ I just felt no mercy on cancer.”   “Stubborn is my greatest asset, my greatest curse. #009 - The Big Sur International Marathon has been named to nearly every “Top Marathon” list in existense, and is a famous bucket list race for most runners. Today we dive behind the scenes at this historic event with Race Director Doug Thurston and Marketing/Communications Manager Hilary Fujii. While you might not clock your best time - due to the steep nature of the course - you will have the best time because of the scenic view of Highway 1 on this one way course. I’ve run 3 marathons in my life - and I’m proud to say that Big Sur was one of them.In today’s episode, we get to talk about the history of the Big Sur International Marathon. We peel back the curtain on some of the stories runners aren’t usually privy to, including life on the back of a media truck, how the piano gets to Bigsby Bridge, and the origins of the famous strawberry aid station.Plus we dive into the extreme challenges they’re facing with the pandemic. Especially as a 501(c)3 organization - how they’ve stayed true to their charter. We also dive into the decision to pay the runners a generous restitution - where many other organizations would have simply kept the money. We’re also excited to help them promote The Big Surreal Challenge! This is a really fun virtual event that is 5 challenges in one. You’ll be able to run the majority of the distances offered during the Big Sur weekend from a 5k, 12k, 11 mile, 21 mile, and marathon - throughout the month of September. The more races you complete, the better the swag that you can take home. And Big Sur has some of the coolest swag around. Plus there will be all sorts of Virtual Encouragement along the way. Coach B and I are both entered - so we hope to see you online.

Baseball legend and cancer survivor Darryl Strawberry is one of our guests in this special episode focused on the coronavirus pandemic. Subscribe to the Run The Race podcast and catch up on some fascinating interviews, while you are stuck at home during these difficult times. Gyms and schools and businesses have closed. So many events (like my Big Sur Marathon) have been canceled or postponed. What now? I start with a look at the impact of COVID-19 on the fitness and faith aspects of our lives, with an inspirational message to stay strong in the face of this crisis. (5:50) We listen in on one pastor's take on coronavirus, when church was in person last Sunday. Buddy Dutoit, Regional Manager of several Orangetheory Fitness studios in GA, (9:20) sits down for a chat about some gyms closing and others not so far, plus alternative workouts with trainers online, and what to do if you're getting stir crazy at home. The former personal trainer and running coach (16:05) also is a focused Christian who talks to us about how COVID-19 is affecting church members and live-streaming services. (18:50) Then we turn to my conversation with 4X World Series champion Darryl Strawberry, a former MLB All-Star with the NY Mets and Yankees. He first talks about sports in the face of the coronavirus and how our health trumps anything else going on, including Spring Training being canceled and the baseball season delayed. It's also colorectol cancer awareness month, so (20:17) Strawberry talks about beating cancer, what he went through, why people don't get tested and why they should. (23:27) He also discusses the benefits of fitness and working out on avoiding health challenges. The coronavirus outbreak (25:42) is the main topic of "Food for Thought" and "Parting Gift" with a unique workout in Spain, how churches nationwide are handling it, and my thoughts on the panic. As one pastor put it, "We believe in prayer, and we also believe in Purell." Thanks for listening! Make sure to share this with your friends using #RunTheRacePodcast. Hello Runners, Welcome to Episode #3 of Feel Good Running. I appreciate you listening and hope you are enjoying the podcast. I’m working hard to bring you a show that is motivating, inspirational and entertaining. There are many running podcasts out there so thanks for giving us a chance. I welcome your feedback and suggestions on possible topics. And if you like this podcast I hope you subscribe and give us a nice review. This episode I interview my good friend Malia Crouse. Malia is actually from Maui but ventured off island to go to college and ended up in Denver for 10 years. She eventually fell into the Colorado running scene. Malia is nothing short of an outstanding runner. Fast and focused is how I would describe her. She has won the overall women in a few marathons and also has won several smaller races. If you listened to the first two episodes, and especially Episode #1, you know that my goal for Feel Good Running is to focus on the everyday runner. Though Malia would be considered more of an elite runner compared to us mere mortal everyday runners, she gives back to the running community in so many ways. Two years ago she moved back home to Maui and immediately immersed herself into the Maui running community. She started a little business, the Maui Running Company. She puts on two Sunday runs per month with participation not only from locals but also visitors. Malia put on an ultra event in the summer of 2018, is the Assistant Race Director of the Maui Marathon and is on the board of directors of the Valley Isle Road Runners, the local running club on Maui. Malia is such a joy to be around, and her infectious personality will certainly rub off on you. If you are ever on Maui, treat yourself and join her run on a Sunday. I’m honored to be her friend, and I know you will enjoy my interview with her. In addition to my interview with Malia, I talk about the Boston Marathon qualification times and a little off the subject discussion on the movie, Bohemian Rhapsody. I thought it was awesome, and Rami Malek played lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury just spot on. And of course we have a few running news items. Matt introduces us to Purple Patch athlete, Jordan Ouida. Ouida, based in Manhattan, is a husband, father, financial executive, marathoner and triathlete.  And, as you’ll hear in this episode, has successfully integrated sport into life with a little “out-of-the-box” thinking. Matt explores Jordan’s evolution in training and how he has managed to navigate and excel in his multisport career. In fact, Ouida recently ran two marathons, Boston and Big Sur, just two weeks apart, on a recipe of just three runs per week. Guess what? He requalified for Boston in 2019! In this conversation with coach and athlete, you’ll learn the benefits of swimming and biking for run performance and how, as triathletes, run training cannot be designed in isolation. Triathlon is swim-bike-run. It’s not just three sports. It is one sport with three disciplines. Sometimes you have to turn traditional marathon training on its head in order to integrate training successfully into your life and still yield performance.   By Jordan Ouida’s example, you’ll also learn: The value of arriving to races fit, healthy, and fresh. It’s so critical to success. As a recreational, but driven athlete, be ready to think outside of the box to remain passionate, healthy, and progressing. Finally, realize the vast majority of time-starved athletes spend much of their time stressing about the training load, but understand that stress is stress is stress. The biggest challenge that they face arrives from life stress.  This example is validation of why a dynamic and flexible approach to training is so key. You have to integrate sport into your life and Jordan Ouida is a shining example of successful execution.   Follow Purple Patch Fitness and learn more about our Coaching Services, Training Camps, Promotions and Matt's Latest Book, Fast Track Triathlete: Purple Patch Fitness Website Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Thanks for taking a listen and, if you like what you hear, please subscribe, share, rate and review.
