They discuss: The language that deaf communities prefer (and why words matter). How to make meetings, classrooms and public spaces more accessible. The role of BSL interpreters, captions and lip-speaking (and why "one size fits all" doesn't work). Practical ideas schools can apply. "People just assume deaf equals absolutely no hearing. On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…Host Doug Stephan and Dr. Ken Kronhaus of Lake Cardiology (352-735-1400) cover a number of topics affecting our health. First up, Doug and Dr. Ken begin with a simple smell test that can possibly help prevent Alzheimer's by early detection. While sense of smell is important, so are the other senses. This leads to a conversation between Doug and Dr. Ken on how loss of senses can affect the brain, and vice versa. When it comes to hearing, there has been data that shows a loss of the auditory sense can lead to a loss in memory and create a higher likelihood of developing a neurologically-degenerative disorder. When patients find themselves hard of hearing, they're a lot less likely to seek medical assistance and get hearing aids. This raises the question of “Why,” especially when you consider the fact that if someone has trouble seeing or some kind of vision issues, they seek medical advice from an optometrist without hesitation and start wearing glasses, contacts, or get corrective surgery when applicable. Continuing on with brain health and the potential for developing Alzheimer's, Doug poses the question to Dr. Ken on whether or not animals get Alzheimer's. Dr. Ken states some animals are prone to age-related degenerative diseases, while Alzheimer's is typically a human issue, though some primates have showed similar neurological results. However, we don't have to worry about our fur babies getting it, as dogs and cats may age, they won't develop Alzheimer's. In female health news, the FDA has approved the first home-based OTC/non-prescriptive diagnostic test for various sexually transmitted infections in women. Then, the conversation shifts to a focus on sugar substitutes, and why they may be just as harmful as regular sugar, but for a different reason. Doug and Dr. Ken break it down, and why Sucralose (the primary sweetener in Splenda) could increase your appetite and feelings of hunger. Going a step further, what happens for children of obese mothers. It's a focus of a new study that most children who struggle with obesity, typically have an obese mother. It may not always be as simple as what people eat, and mores a genetic makeup and predisposition to obesity. On the other hand, a mother's poor choices in eating and health habits can have a negative affect on their children, leading them down the same path. Lastly, Doug and Dr. Ken address listener questions, starting with the Avian Influenza outbreaks and how humans are affected, and potentially infected, especially for those who work on the farm. Plus, Doug uses his own health status to share a relatable story of needing procedures and the out of pocket price for the insurance company, and how much the actual doctor's receive. The sense of hearing is a finely tuned collaboration between physics and biology, transforming invisible sound waves into meaning, memory, and emotion. From the delicate mechanics of the middle ear to the neural pathways that help us localize danger, recognize voices, and enjoy music, hearing quietly shapes how we connect with the world. Yet it's also one of our most vulnerable senses—affected by aging, noise exposure, infection, and even cardiovascular health. How benign are ear pain and ringing? Is there a limit to how loud we should listen to music? And what can we do to protect this sense before silence becomes noticeable? In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Stacey Lim, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified audiologist and Professor of Audiology.Dr. Lim received her BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders and German Language and Literature from Wooster College, her AuD (Doctor of Audiology) from the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium at the University of Akron, and her PhD in Audiology from Kent State University. Currently, Dr. Lim is a Professor of Audiology at Central Michigan University, holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from ASHA, and is a researcher focused on cochlear implants and aural rehabilitation, informed by her personal experience of bilateral, profound sensorineural hearing loss since birth. Previously, Dr. Lim was a Fulbright Scholar at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, studying hearing loss in Germany, a co-Principal Investigator in March of Dimes research on cognitive and linguistic skills related to hearing loss, and the Chapter President at the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.Dr. Lim is also a co-curator of (dis)ABLED BEAUTY, a museum exhibition featuring creatively designed adaptive devices, assistive devices, and apparel for people with disabilities.Follow Friends of Franz Podcast: Website, Instagram, FacebookFollow Christian Franz (Host): Instagram, YouTube

In this episode, I sit down with Dame Evelyn Glennie to talk about what listening really means and why it matters far beyond music. We start with the origins of the Evelyn Glennie Foundation and how her work evolved organically from teaching, performing, and asking people better questions so they can hear themselves more clearly. Evelyn shares how her own experiences shaped a broader philosophy of listening that encompasses sound, the written word, and the ways we communicate through email, texts, and social media. We also dig into how technology has changed our patience and attention, and why listening belongs at the center of education, wellbeing, empathy, and community. From there, we move into the performer's mindset and Evelyn's lifelong curiosity about sound. She explains why she starts new repertoire from the inside out, how the body becomes an essential listening partner over time, and why recordings are only frozen snapshots rather than definitive answers. I ask her about formative training, the balance of learning by ear and reading music, and how her early environments built a deep listening culture that still guides her today. Evelyn offers a powerful reminder that every performance is a world premiere for someone, and that familiar instruments can become brand new when we hear them in a different context. We also go down memory lane through landmark repertoire and collaborations. Evelyn talks about discovering and recording Paul Smadbeck's Rhythm Song, revisiting it years later, and even developing a creative version for marimba and strings. She reflects on the Bartók Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, including the intensity of working at a young age with Sir Georg Solti and the lessons that stayed with her. We then explore her long pursuit of John Corigliano's Conjurer, how the concerto's concept came together, and what it takes to tour a major work night after night, adapting to different instruments and acoustics. Finally, we discuss her experience performing Philip Glass's Double Timpani Concerto with Jonathan Haas, the logistics behind that project, and why she loves the energy of shared soloist roles. To close, Evelyn shares what she is creating right now, including writing for television and film, new books, wide-ranging collaborations, duo projects, and continued foundation work that invites people to slow down, listen deeply, and rethink what connection feels like. This conversation is a masterclass in curiosity, artistry, and attention, and I'm grateful to share it with you.To learn more about Evelyn and the Evelyn Glennie Foundation, visit her website. The Somatic Signature of Hunger: Why You Can't Tell When You're Actually HungryEpisode Summary: You've been told to "listen to your body" and "eat when you're hungry." But what if you've been listening for years and hear absolutely nothing until you're starving? In this episode, we dismantle the myth of Intuitive Eating for chronic dieters. We explore the neuroscience of interoception, your body's internal dashboard, and how years of restriction have effectively cut the wire between your gut and your brain. If you feel like you're flying blind without a calorie tracker, this episode explains why and how to turn the lights back on.Important points:The "Deafness" of Dieting: How ignoring hunger signals for years has trained your brain to treat biological cues as background noise.Interoception 101: Understanding the "8th sense" and the role of the Insula in regulating your weight. The Intuitive Eating Trap: Why standard advice to "trust your gut" backfires for dieters who have lost their somatic connection.High & Buzzy vs. Low & Hollow: A practical tool to distinguish between anxiety (nervous system activation) and true biological hunger.Rebuilding the Hardware: Why you need "physical therapy" for your interoception before you can successfully eat intuitively.Action Step: Practice the Non-Food Body Scan three times a day. Stop for 30 seconds and locate a sensation (temperature, pressure, heartbeat) that has nothing to do with food. You are retraining your brain to receive data from the body again.
Martha's Vineyard. You know it now as a summer retreat for the wealthy, a place of pristine beaches and celebrity sightings. But between the late seventeenth century and the middle of the twentieth, something happened there that challenges everything we think we know about disability, about language, about what it means to belong. It began with a gene. Families from the Weald, a forested region in Kent, England, emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600s. They were Puritans seeking religious freedom, and they carried with them, unknowingly, a recessive genetic trait for congenital Deafness. In 1694, a carpenter and farmer named Jonathan Lambert arrived on Martha's Vineyard with his hearing wife. Two of their seven children would be born Deaf. They were the first, but they would not be the last.
Young fremhever hvordan Kaminsky gjør stillhet til både et opprør og en eksistensform: “Our country woke up next morning and refused to hear soldiers,” he writes. Deafness, here, is an insurgency, a state of being, a rebellion against a world that sees deafness as “a contagious disease.” (Fra “Deaf Republic”: A poet writes deafness as a form of dissent against tyranny and violence. Young, 2019.)

Deafness is known for being an invisible disability, which can lead to exclusion and loneliness. According to a Human Rights Watch article from 2019, 70 million deaf people across the world use sign language to communicate. Well sign singers take that one step further, by adapting song lyrics into sign language for the deaf and hard of hearing. In addition to making entertainment more accessible to deaf people and the hard of hearing, this musical activity singing is also a form of artistic expression in its own right. Sign singing can be just as diverse as vocal singing, demonstrating great creativity. There are many different forms, like rap signing, slow signing and hard signing. How do sign singers translate music? Where does it come from? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Joe, who also is partially deaf, decided then he would try CE-5 to see if he could be helped. The cure Joe hoped for never came. Instead, he's been getting visited three or four times per week for the past five years by apparent alien creatures in his bedroom, and he doesn't know what they want from him.Links/Sources:Stop Alien Abductions | Home PageGettysburg Man Conjured 8-to-10-Foot-Tall Shadowy Mantis Alien Into Bedroom During CE-5 Experiment - UFO - Extraterrestrial Reality | Podcast on SpotifySupport Extraterrestrial Reality/Quirk Zone on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/c/Extraterrestrial_RealityCheck out my YouTube channel:Quirk Zone - YouTubeExtraterrestrial Reality Book Recommendations:Link to ROSWELL: THE ULTIMATE COLD CASE: CLOSED: https://amzn.to/3O2loSILink to COMMUNION by Whitley Strieber: https://amzn.to/3xuPGqiLink to THE THREAT by David M. I love listening to music. As a music lover, nothing enhances my own listening experience as much as a good set of ear buds and a volume setting that I'm sure is higher than it should be. Lately, my difficulty hearing conversations when there's ambient noise have me wishing I could rewind to turn down the volume that I'm sure now effects my hearing as I've gotten older. The World Health Organization tell us that globally, thirty-four million children have deafness or hearing loss, of which sixty percent of the cases are due to preventable causes. As you might expect much of this could be mitigated if we would intervene when our children are younger, teaching them to practice safe listening habits, such as using headphones or earbuds less frequently, and turning down the volume. Parents, you are responsible for stewarding your child's health, including their hearing, to the glory of God, so that they might make choices now that lead to life-long hearing health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) an estimated 1.3 billion people or 16% of the global population have a significant disability. A disability is a condition that can be mental or physical, and can affect a person's vision, movement, thinking, learning, communication, hearing, mental health or social relationships. However, not all disabilities are the same. Some disabilities are genetic, passed down from generation to generation, while others may have been caused by an incident out of the person's control. In this episode of Exploring Ethics, Professor Joseph Stramondo will discuss the narrative, identity and ethics of choosing disability. It's estimated that 44 million Americans experience hearing loss, but only one-fifth get help. Research has shown that there is a significant relationship between hearing loss, cognitive decline and depression in the elderly. In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that hearing aids can be sold over-the-counter without a prescription to adults over the age of 18. Learn how adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss are now able to buy OTC hearing aids online and in stores, without a prescription.
