On May 14, 2022, a shooter opened fire in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. Ten people were killed, an additional three injured. The suspect in the Buffalo shooting had a manifesto, as mass shooters often do. However, this one was different. It was littered with references to peer-reviewed scientific research that, he purports, supports his white supremacist beliefs. It's part of a broader far right subculture, with ‘journal clubs' and the like, in which research is read closely and appropriated, says population geneticist Jed Carlson. What are scientists to make of it? Plus, there's a much wider intellectual history of race science and the right. Mitch Thompson of Press Progress details this ‘scholarly' work, much of it CanCon, and how it undergirds conservative austerity politics. On this episode of Darts and Letters, our producer Marc Apollonio takes over the mic to speak to Jed and Mitch about great replacement theory, race science, and right-wing thought. —————————-SUPPORT THE SHOW—————————- You can support the show for free by following or subscribing on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or whichever app you use. Jeremy Sochan of the Baylor Bears has staked his claim as one of the wilder stories of the NBA Draft in 2022. For someone who was not even a top-100 freshman coming into the Baylor program this season, being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs at No. 9 overall is a wild turn of events. The crafty forward brings elite defense to Gregg Popovich's team and will be a staple character for the franchise from the jump. Locked On Baylor host Drake Toll is joined by Inside the Bears' Cameron Stuart to break down how Sochan can make an immediate impact. They all juxtapose his pick with the fall of Kendall Brown. The guys then tackle Baylor's newest addition in the class of 2023 as Scott Drew has landed a gem in 5-star recruit Ja'Kobe Walter. Walter is the No. 1 shooting guard in the nation out of McKinney and will bring elite scoring to the Bears right away. As a top-20 prospect, he's a likely one-and-done. But his impact even in a single season for Baylor will be huge. The guys close the show with Mitch Thompson, Baylor's new baseball coach, giving his remarks to a packed Baylor Club on Thursday at his introductory press conference. From promising to put the players first to utilizing his Texas lingo, Thompson won the crowd over with ease. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Max Muncy is a two-time MBL all-star and the winner of the 2021 World Series. More importantly for us, though, he's a Baylor Bear. The former star in the green and gold joined Locked On Baylor and host Drake Toll to give his thoughts on the man who brought him to Waco — Mitch Thompson. Muncy was highly recruited out of high school as one of the top players in the state of Texas, and he had no desire to go to Baylor. Without any family connections or the slightest tie to the university, Thompson's presence at a bulk of Muncy's summer games is what showed how much Baylor was really invested in the young star. Moreover, Thompson helped develop Muncy into a freshman all-American and watched the first baseman explode onto the scene with 11 home runs in his first season in Waco. Muncy also made note of Thompson's role in compiling the greatest Baylor baseball team of all time in 2012. Despite a slow start, that squad would rattle off 24 straight wins through Big 12 play and capture the No. 1 spot in the nation during the regular season. Mitch Thompson recruited every player on that team. Muncy also divulged Thompson's role as an influence in his life, saying Thompson transformed him into the baseball player and man that he is today from the field to his faith. Muncy, the best big-leaguer Baylor has sent out in recent years, certainly signs off on the new headman for Baylor baseball. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Austin Novosad is Baylor football's quarterback commit for the class of 2023. Austin Novosad has also now picked up an offer from Ohio State, and the boys in Columbus are recruiting the Dripping Springs native to join the Buckeyes after his senior year. In this fierce battle over the young quarterback, Baylor has to find a leg up on a program that boasts national titles and playoff appearances. This is no easy task. To retain Novosad's commitment, Baylor needs to harp on Shawn Bell's job security, detail plans to start Novosad early on in his career due to the already small quarterback room and tout Novosad's ability to be drafted highly from Baylor. Staying in football, Drake hits the topic of 247 Sports' preseason bowl predictions, an article that includes Baylor in the Texas Bowl. Furthermore, he puts that in juxtaposition with Baylor's No. 12 preseason ranking. Would the No. 12 team in the country only be worth the Texas Bowl at the end of the year? Drake does not think so, and he points to Auburn being the projected opponent to show that this list has many a hole. Lastly, Drake gives his own thoughts on baseball hiring Mitch Thompson to lead the program. It is going to be a beautiful marriage between the two parties when Thompson is able to display his skills with the transfer portal and win right away in Waco. Moreover, the hire shows just how much Mack Rhoades loves Thompson. To have hired a guy that was a part of 'old Baylor,' this move is huge. Thompson is certainly going to win in the Green and Gold. A new era of Baylor baseball has begun as McLennan Community College head coach Mitch Thompson has agreed to come back to Baylor and serve as the program's fourth head coach in almost 40 years. And alumni are ecstatic. Locked On Baylor's Drake Toll is joined by former Baylor pitcher and Our Daily Bears baseball writer Max Garner to talk about how the hire elevates the program to new heights. The guys start with alumni relations — something Thompson will be great at. Considering he recruited most of the Baylor players on the roster for a nearly 15-year span, Thompson is well connected with many around the program and will add that knowledge to his role. Max just so happens to be one of the alumni he recruited to Baylor, and he's stoked about the hire. Thompson's age also isn't something Max sees an issue with. He's confident that the new coach will bring whatever he's got to Baylor for as long as he can be successful. It's not even out of the question that he would bring a successor on board now. And, lastly, Thompson is prized to win right away. Having played the transfer game at MCC for years, few coaches in baseball understand how to handle the transfer portal more. He'll be stellar at recruiting a great roster from the jump. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Following Steve Rodriguez's decision to step down after seven seasons at the helm of Baylor's program, Mack Rhoades is on the search for a new skipper. Along with that search, a shortlist of names has been determined. There is one person who knows what that shortlist consists of. That one person is Mack Rhoades. In the meantime, though, Drake is joined by Cam Stuart to talk candidates and even coaches that players have murmured about. After a conversation with a source close to the team, Drake learned that Texas State's Steven Trout and McClennan Community College's Mitch Thompson are both player favorites to be named the team's next head man. As players like Tre Richardson and Kyle Nevin have entered the transfer portal, it's becoming even more crucial for Rhoades to name a replacement for Rodriguez soon. Drake and Cam take today's show to answer crucial questions about each candidate and determine what may give one guy the edge over the other. For Trout, he has only been a head coach at Texas State since 2019. Granted, he has flipped the program around and created a powerhouse, but he's yet to show just how long he can sustain it. On the Thompson front, the former Baylor assistant does not have enough left in the tank to give the Green and Gold 20 years. So, who do you go with? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
