Renee De Luca is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras, calling in from Cleveland, where Herlinda recently visited her. Here is Renee's article on Substack about Herlinda's visit to Cleveland. She was also on these two episodes along with Don Barkley, part one and part two in July of 2024. That was when the Museum of Sonoma County was launching its exhibit On Tap, about local brewing history, which was a big hit. Renee De Luca is the daughter of Jack MacAuliffe, who was a pioneer in craft brewing. He was one of the founders, and the brewer, of New Albion. Renee has been on Brew Ha Ha three times before today. On this episode in July 31, 2025, she remembered her father after his passing that year. Herlinda and Renee talk about a lot of cool exhibits at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There is a room where they have instruments that anyone can come and play. Some people come in and really jam.  ProChiller Green Herlinda begins by describing the ProChiller Green system, that uses only a small amount of Co2 instead of a larger amount of dangerous refrigerants. They are holding demonstrations at Hanabi Lager in Napa, the next one is August 20. Visit the ProChiller Green website for more information.   ++++ Visit Russian River Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Check out their website and socials for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more.++++   Both of the beers Herlinda will open today come from Cleveland. They are a Shandy from Market Garden Brewery and a Great Lakes Stout. Herlinda introduces her friend Renee De Luca, calling in from Cleveland. Renee’s father was Jack MacAuliffe, who founded New Albion brewery. Her dad’s recipe was famous and led the way in showing people how good a well-made local beer could be.   ****Visit Russian River Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Check out their website and socials for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more.****   Herlinda visited Cleveland recently, when Renee scored VIP tickets to the opening of the Wings exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Renee's article on Substack tells about it. Market Garden Brewery is next to the Market Garden in Cleveland. Herlinda will have one of their partners, Sam McNulty, on the show soon.   Herlinda describes the lineup along the shore of Lake Eire, from the Cleveland Browns stadium, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Cleveland Clinic, and the Cleveland Guardians. The city has embraced the new name. It comes from the Guardians of Transportation the line the Hope Memorial Bridge. It is an entryway to the city and depicts neolithic gods holding various forms of transportation. When you cross the bridge there is the Guardians' stadium.

Can a brand built on purpose survive when its mission is put at risk?  The hosts dive into the escalating conflict between Ben & Jerry's and its parent company over funding cuts to the ice cream maker's philanthropic foundation, debating whether a brand so closely tied to a social mission can preserve its identity after acquisition and how the dispute could influence consumer loyalty in an increasingly competitive premium ice cream category.  The discussion also examines how founders should approach purpose-driven branding, with early-stage sparkling water brand Atomico serving as an example of a young company that integrates its mission into its business without overshadowing the product itself.  The hosts also sample and review a variety of emerging products, including South Chicago Packing's Wagyu Beef Tallow Spray, Cozy's refrigerated snack bars made with grass-fed butter, Bakeful's better-for-you brownies, muffins and donuts, MixMix THC beverage stick packs, and Muffits protein mini muffins. Show notes: 0:20: On Tap. Social Scoops No More? Space Age Sparkling Water. Tallow & Butter. Munchin' On Muffins. The hosts preview two upcoming community events: the Taste Radio Chicago Meetup at Pilot Project Brewing on Aug. 13 and a Nombase webinar featuring executives from Goodles and Culture Pop on July 28. They then explore whether a purpose-driven brand can preserve its identity after being acquired, and how changes to its philanthropic commitments could reshape consumer perception. As a counterpoint, they spotlight an emerging functional sparkling water brand that supports STEM education through NASA Space Camp scholarships. Later, Melissa highlights a beefy cooking spray, Ray shares a pair of brands—one making better-for-you yet indulgent snack bars and another reimagining Hostess-style treats for today's consumers. Mike stirs things up with powdered drink mixes, and the episode wraps with a discussion of protein snacks—because, of course, it does. Brands in this episode: Goodles, Culture Pop, Nantucket Nectars, Annie's, Ben & Jerry's, Stonyfield, Jeni's, Van Leeuwens, Salt & Straw, Tillamook, Atomico, Spindrift, South Chicago Packing, COZY, Bakeful, MixMix, Muffits

Season 10 begins with a question that has been getting harder for me to ignore: What if success is keeping you busy enough to miss your assignment? After more than 175 conversations, I've noticed that even the most accomplished leaders eventually wrestle with deeper questions about identity, purpose, and what their success is ultimately for. In this On Tap preview, you'll meet five of the 17 leaders joining me this season: Dr. Deb Clary, a globally recognized leadership expert, TEDx speaker, author, and authority on curiosity. Dr. Willie Jolley, a Hall of Fame speaker, bestselling author, and renowned expert on turning setbacks into comebacks. Kim-Adele Randall, a CEO, bestselling author, and leadership expert whose work explores self-doubt, authenticity, and the courage to step into what comes next. Roderick Jefferson, a Fortune 100 executive and bestselling author whose journey from global corporate success to stroke survivor reshaped his perspective on health, leadership, and what matters most. John Herber, Chairman of RubinBrown and a respected business leader who believes success finds its greatest meaning through stewardship and service. Season 10 is about reinvention, faith, resilience, identity, courage, and the questions that change the direction of a life. My hope is that somewhere in these conversations, you hear something that challenges you, stays with you, and moves you closer to the assignment that has your name on it. Welcome to Season 10 of Whiskey, Jazz & Leadership. Cheers.

Why Modern Sci-Fi Reboots Are Failing Existing Fans

Grab your alumni gear, because Episode 271 of Beer, Blues, and BS is officially in session! We're kicking things off with a massive shout-out to our listeners tuning in all the way from Hong Kong, alongside a proud roll call for fellow Fighting Sioux alumni. This week, a major pop culture news drop takes center stage as the crew reacts to breaking headlines from the BBC regarding the future of Doctor Who—including a canceled Christmas special and a surprising shift in production. This immediate dive down the entertainment rabbit hole sparks an incredibly passionate debate about the overall decline of massive franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the newly axed Stargate reboot. The guys break down why the modern "10-episode streaming season" is failing character development, contrasting it with the gold standard of 90s television. Over on the beverage counter, the "What's on Tap" segment delivers a relentless gauntlet of hits and misses. Mark Kidder mixes up a cherry-free Old Fashioned dedicated to his grandfather, while Tony Soprano drops in late (thanks, Windows updates!) to review a hard seltzer that tastes exactly like old-school green plastic-tube popsicles. Meanwhile, LCL Geek and Howard Blues team up to test a highly anticipated hop water from Montana that, unfortunately, leaves them feeling like they're drinking watery IPA backwash. Inside this Episode: Franchise Fatigue: Why Hollywood keeps alienating long-term fans by "chasing new audiences" instead of telling good stories. The 1940s World Cup Twist: Howard tracks the chaotic, final-minute heartbreak of the USA vs. Paraguay soccer match. AI Thumbnail Fails: Howard shares a hilarious nightmare creation from Google Gemini after attempting to sharpen a blurry photo of Doc. On Tap this Episode: Mark Kidder: An artisanal Old Fashioned featuring Batch 27 Bourbon and local syrup. Tony Soprano: Happy Dad Hard Seltzers (Lemon-Lime and Watermelon). Rudeboy Kyle: A crisp German Pilsner out of Iowa and a Mexican-style Lime Lager. Doc: Old Keg Premium Butterscotch Beer & Hawaiian Soda Co. Passion Orange Guava. From major historic site upgrades to the end of a legendary brewing era, Episode 270 of Beer, Blues, and BS is packed with high mileage, heavy machinery, and plenty of banter. We kick things off with a milestone celebration for our local historic sites before diving straight into breaking industry news: the historic discontinuation of a classic American heritage beer brand. The "What's on Tap" segment takes our palates on a truly wild ride. The crew tests the limits with an absolute gauntlet of experimental beverages, featuring everything from a video-game-branded sour cherry soda and a "pineapple-gasoline" punch, to a fiercely ginger-forward kombucha and a spiced pineapple soda packed with black pepper. On the flip side, we celebrate a massive milestone as the show officially features its very first craft beer sourced from the state of Mississippi! Plus, JS pulls off a live mechanical feat right on camera, replacing a radiator and water pump mid-show while dropping some critical "mower beer" safety disclaimers. We also talk technical setups for the next big music challenge, dive into the literal phonetic quirks of the German language, debate the perfect base coat for Howard's latest scarecrow miniature, and share deep personal philosophies on why adults need to learn to embrace the quiet moments. On Tap this Episode: Mark Kidder: Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, New Belgium Mountain Time, and a smooth Southern Pecan Brown Ale. JS: Leinenkugel's Orange Shandy, a crisp Blueberry Lager, and a classic Grain Belt Premium. Doc: Fanta Crimson Sour Cherry (Diablo 4 Edition) and a beautifully balanced Thai Lychee drink. Big D: Mad Dog 2020 Island Pineapple Spike Punch and a strawberry high-protein milkshake "perfection." Turn up your speakers, because after a multi-year hiatus, the most cutthroat segment in TripleB history has officially returned! In Episode 269, the crew goes head-to-head in the legendary "Impossible Music Challenge." Mark Kidder sits in the judge's seat, armed with a vault of audio clips ranging from a mere fraction of a second to a fleeting three seconds. With reigning champion Rudeboy Kyle missing in action, the crown is completely up for grabs. The team battles their way through three grueling rounds of musical history, spanning everything from 1940s big band swing and 90s alternative rock, all the way to 2025 synth-pop. You'll hear the guys struggle, second-guess themselves, and pull off some truly miraculous snipes based on old music videos, cinema soundtracks, and social media reels. Over at the bar, the "What's on Tap" segment delivers its own set of hits and misses. While Mark Kidder enjoys a remarkably smooth red ale, Big D faces a Double IPA so aggressively bitter that he abandons the can entirely and switches to water. Howard Blues puts his palate on the line with a "Sour Green Skittles" soda that threatens an immediate sugar crash, and the rest of the crew checks in with sparkling hop teas, raspberry shandies, and classic iced teas. Inside the Music Challenge: Cinematic Clues: How Dirty Dancing and an obscure moped music video saved the day. The Sitcom Link: The bizarre connection between a canceled DMV sitcom and a 2011 pop hit. Wrestling Themes & B-Movies: The crew attempts to guess tracks based on sheer nostalgia. Carlos Bocanegra joins Jason Longshore to talk about Atlanta FC, his new boutique youth club built on a model American youth soccer rarely sees: one team per age group, one dedicated coach per team, and a family-first environment where parents get the training session plan after every practice and are welcome at team talks. Bocanegra talks about why he stopped playing soccer for nine months in high school because of a bad coaching experience, why the late bloomer is the player most at risk in the current system, and what he hopes Atlanta FC can do to start changing the culture of youth development nationally. Jason adds context on the staff: Liam Curran, nine years at Atlanta United and currently working with U.S. Youth National Teams, as Director of Goalkeeping, and Dr. Ryan Alexander, founding High Performance Director at Atlanta United, in the same role at Atlanta FC. Tryouts are May 18 through 20 at Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven. More at atlantafootballclub.com. Then it's What's On Tap, sponsored by Michelob Ultra, official beer sponsor of FIFA World Cup 26. Arsenal are going to Budapest for their first Champions League final in 20 years. Jason breaks down the most statistically dominant European campaign any English club has put together in the modern format, what Mikel Arteta has had to manage to get there, and why dismissing the PSG-Bayern first leg as poorly defended is the wrong take entirely. Preview of tomorrow's second leg in Munich, where Bayern need two goals and both managers have said neither team is coming to defend. The 3-4-3, brought to you by Ford, closes the show. Local stories cover the AU2 road win over Carolina Core, the full boys high school quarterfinal bracket with all four classifications, and the girls semifinal picture including Model's 6-0 win in Rome with Emily Gentry's first-half hat trick. Four headlines: Arsenal's Premier League title door opens wider after City drop points against Everton, the Neymar assault allegation at Santos involving Robinho Jr., Mourinho extension talks accelerating at Benfica with Real Madrid circling and a ten-day release clause window approaching, and Hearts three points clear of Celtic with three matches left chasing the first Scottish title by a club outside the Old Firm since Sir Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen in 1985. Three smile stories: the Rosario Central dog who turned out to belong to a Newell's Old Boys family, Cooper Sanchez getting better every single match and deserving national attention he is not getting, and the crowd in Rome for Model's state quarterfinal win.
