Historian Ronnie Grinberg's new book Write Like a Man: Jewish Masculinity and the New York Intellectuals couldn't be better "Know Your Enemy" fodder. (Main characters include: Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, Diana and Lionel Trilling, Irving Howe, Alfred Kazin, and Mary McCarthy!) These writers, Grinberg shows, built and sustained a novel, secular, Jewish, and masculine concept of the intellectual life, an ideology that would profoundly affected the development of  Cold War liberalism, neo-conservativism, Zionism, and right-wing reaction against feminism, gay rights, and black power. As we discovered in this conversation, it's impossible to make sense of the creative and scholarly contributions of the New York Intellectuals — good and bad — without gender as an essential lens. What a Creep: Norman Mailer Season 14, Episode 3 Writer, Activist, & Wife-Stabber Norman Mailer has been in the news lately due to the fact his son John Buffalo Mailer who is partnering with Mailer biographer J. Michael Lennon on a new trove of Mailer writings with the later writers' ideas on what American democracy will look like in the future. If you've made it to Episode 8 and part of you still likes Mailer and/or Kosinski, that'll change with this episode. Jerzy Kosinski admits to having committed rape when he was a young man in Poland, and his adult behavior is just as horrific. As for Norman Mailer, he takes it upon himself to try to save the patriarchy from Second-wave feminism by attacking Kate Millet in The Prisoner of Sex and then at the so-called “Town Bloody Hall” by championing misogyny and homophobia. Needless to say, he makes a complete fool of himself and is absolutely owned by Germaine Greer, Susan Sontag, and Cynthia Ozick among others.

Terrie Samundra is a Director and Screenwriter whose debut feature KAALI KHUHI, a Netflix Original, was released internationally in October 2020. Samundra's short films ICE CREAM WALLAH, KUNJO and A SHORT TALE OF XUAN, have screened in film festivals internationally garnering accolades. She is a Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab alumna, a SFFILM/Kenneth Rainin Screenwriting fellow and alumna of the Sundance Women in Film Finance Lab. She has written extensively with her creative partner David Walter Lech on the screenplays KAALI KHUHI, WOMAN ON THE HILL, BETAMAX, WESTERN INTERIOR SEAWAY,  and the episodic series THE BALLAD OF POOJA and THE BLOOD BELOW. She has also written a narrative adaptation of the D.A. D.A. Pennebaker died this month at the age of 94. He was a pioneer of the modern documentary with films like "Crisis," "Dont Look Back" and "Monterey Pop." Dokumentären Till Ungdomen, som har premiär den här helgen, skulle egentligen ha handlat om drömmar, visioner och politiskt engagemang hos fyra norska ungdomar. Tanken var att följa dom inför valkampanjen 2011, men mitt i inspelningsarbetet inträffar då terrordådet på Utöya, och filmen får ett helt annat innehåll. För alla ungdomarna påverkas på olika sätt. Kinos reporter Hugo Lavett träffade Till ungdomens regissör kari Anne Moe och en av de medverkande ungdomarna Sana el Morabit, och ingen av dem kommer någonsin att glömma var de var den 22 juli 2011. Filmarna D A Pennebaker och Chris Hegedus har gjort legendariska dokumentärer. Pennebaker kommer för evigt att gå till filmhistorien som mannen som fångade Bob Dylan i Don't look back från 1967 - den där Dylan håller stora skyltar med ord ur texten till Subterranean Homesick Blues. Han har också dokumenterat musikfestivalen i Monterey i filmen Monterey Pop. Och tillsammans med sin fru Chris Hegedus har de också gjort filmen Town Bloody Hall som vi berättade om förra veckan, samt The War Room om president Clintons presidentvalskampanj. Både svenska Bitchkram och franska Min ungdoms kärlek kretsar kring åren runt tjugo. En period av sökande, stormiga kärlekshistorier och karriärdrömmar. I Min ungdoms kärlek är det Camille som måste ta sig vidare efter att tonårsförälskelsen kraschat och historien bygger faktiskt på regissören Mia Hansen-Löves egna erfarenheter av att tillbringa större delen av tiden mellan 15 och 19, gråtande på en säng. När Nina Asarnoj träffade Mia Hansen-Löve på ett hotell i Stockholm så handlade samtalet ganska snabbt om hur det EGENTLIGEN var de där dramatiska åren. Och om att göra en långfilm för att komma över minnena från den tiden. När filmsajten Netflix lanserades i Sverige i måndags hade man flugit in tre höjdare för att möta den svenska pressen. Roger Wilson var där för att ta reda på vad sajten egentligen innehåller, och ta reda på mer om Netflix satsningar på egna tv-serier - där man tänker släppa säsongernas samtliga avsnitt på en och samma gång. Att Lars von Trier gillar regler och koncepttänk, det vet vi efter till exempel Dogmaprojektet med sina stränga regler, och filmen de fem benspaend, där han tvingade den danske regissören Jörgen Leth att spela in en film utifrån vissa begränsningar som Lars von Trier hittat på. Och lite samma stuk hittar man i konstprojektet Gesamt som von Trier har tagit intitiativet till. Där har han valt ut sex konstverk ur kulturhistorien som sedan filmare över hela världen fick tolka eller inspireras av. De gjorde sedan vars en max fem minuter lång film, som sedan regissören Jenle Hallund i sin tur klippte ihop till nya filmer. Det kom in över 500 bidrag från 52 länder som Hallund fick sätta saxen i. Sveriges Radios kulturkorrespondenet Gunnar Bolin åkte till konsthallen Charlottenborg i Köenhamn för att se Gesamt, där han visades in av Christian Skovbjerg Jensen. Veckans Kino handlar bland annat om de mindre och specialiserade filmfestivalerna. De som kanske kanske inte alltid hamnar i rampljuset, men som faktiskt är de få platser där man kan ha de riktiga, djuplodande samtalen om film. På den artonde upplagan av Fantastisk filmfestival i Lund träffade Kinos Roger Wilson mannen som uppfann den moderna zombiefilmen med Night of the Living Dead 1968. Och att sitta och lyssna på Romeros Master Class var en smått magisk känsla - eftersom lokalen var sprängfylld av kunskap om levande döda på film. Lilla Filmfestivalen i Båstad har det kanske blygsammaste namnet av alla festivaler i Sverige. Festivalen grundades av Bo Widerberg och har nu Ulf Berggren som konstnärlig ledare - han som i många år drev den legendariska biografen Fågel Blå i Stockholm. Festivalens starkaste kort är just dess litenhet, och dess familjära känsla. Något som gör att filmare som till exempel Jan Troell återkommer gång på gång. Men festivalen håller också kontakten med sina filmare. Nina Asarnoj har pratat med Jenifer Malmqvist om hur en filmfestival kan trycka på den kreativa startknappen. En annan typ av festival som satsar mycket på samtal och seminarier är Berlin Documentary Forum. Ett arrangemang där det är seminarierna och föreläsningarna som står i centrum - inte filmerna som visas. Här handlar det om att gå på djupet kring det dokumentära uttrycket, att se det som en konstform, istället för en filmgenre. Och där man, på det tyska gravallvarliga akademiska sättet, gärna går in på detaljer. Som till exempel att hålla en föreläsning om panoreringens betydelse inom dokumentärfilmen. Gunilla Kracht besökte festivalen i somras och upplevde både förtrollande insikter om det dokumentäras möjligheter, och en och annan knastertorr akademiker. I veckan var det premiär för Svenska filminstitutets nya satsning Filmrummet - "en kreativ mötesplats för samtal och dynamisk kontrovers, där utforskande processer om film, filmpolitik, och filmkonst ska äga rum". Premiärgästen, som lockade fullt hus, var feministikonen Germaine Greer. Hon slog igenom 1970 med boken den kvinliga Eunucken och finns med i dokumentären Town Bloody Hall som också visades som en del av Filmrummet. Den är inspelad 1971, under en debatt där Greer och tre andra feminister diskuterar kvinnans plats i samhället under ledning av författaren Norman Mailer. Ett lite oväntat feministiskt vinklat porträtt kan man hitta i Bille Augusts nya film Balladen om Marie Kröyer. August har alltid varit fascinerad av skagenmålarna - fenomenet med konstnärskolonin på jyllands nordspets som lockades dit av de speciella ljusförhållandena som finns där. En period som tidigare lockat den svenske filmregissören Keve Hjelm, som 1987 gjorde sin Hip Hip Hurra med Stellan Skarsgård i huvudrollen om den danske målaren PS Kröyer och- hans tid i Skagen. Men i Augusts film Balladen om Marie Kröyer, vänder han på perspektivet och sätter PS Kröyers fru Marie i fokus istället. En berättelse om sorg, svek och svåra livsval - och om ett passionerat triangeldrama med den svenske kompositören Hugo Alfvén. Saman Bakhtiari har fått en pratstund med Bille August.
