WELCOME BACK TO THE MAKE IT PLAIN PODCAST - Thanks for coming back! If you slept on S1 you can return to our earlier episodes (S1 was funded by the Evens Foundation in Europe, themed on Black Studies, featuring Patricia Hill Collins, Kimberlee Crenshaw, David Harewood + more).  This is S2, and we're taking a slightly different tact than S1. We'll still be interviewing official guests in academia, politics, and elsewhere. What's new is that we'll also be talking to interesting people on the ground from organizations on the Black United Front (BUF, a directory of Black orgs across the globe that Make it Plain has begun developing). - In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain the House Negro nonsense of the coconut trial of Mariah Hassan, a person who was charged with carrying a placard that pictured Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman as coconuts. This isn't up for debate, this is not a criminal offense it's a defense of the Black radical intellectual tradition. Kehinde also makes plain the general election, the ways you can and can't represent as a Black MP, and the myth and propaganda of the Black Vote. Not discounting our influence in marginal seats, the myth of the Black vote is a really bad way of understanding Black political power. Kehinde makes plain a better (local, national, and global) way of understanding politics through a Black mass membership international organization. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with George the Poet (featuring his son in the background hehe) about his new book Track Record. George shares a section of the book that never made it to his book, "The Anti-Afrikan." They also discuss, turning down an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) honor, despite it "opening doors" and networking opportunities (but the question is, "which doors?" and"whose doors?").   - George the Poet AKA George Mpanga is a multi-dimensional man with lived experience and a London-born spoken word performer of Ugandan heritage. His innovative brand of musical poetry has won him critical acclaim both as a recording artist and a social commentator. George is also a husband, father, and Cambridge graduate. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS It's not a crime to call a "Coconut" a "Coconut." Professor Kehinde Andrews explains why the terms Coconut, House Negro, Coon, and Uncle Tom are vital expressions of Black political thought that should be celebrated and not policed. Drawing on work in his book 'The Psychosis of Whiteness' this is a handy guide through the use of the words complete with many examples. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZkD-e-b6Iw - GUEST LINKS George the Poet https://www.georgethepoet.com/ George's book: Track Record Delving into the music scene and iconic films from his childhood, as well as crucial political and economic moments in history, this book provides the backstory of where we are today. David Harewood is a celebrated British actor, presenter and author. I was very moved by this honest and courageous conversation. I both learnt and felt enriched by it – as you will. It is a must listen.  We discussed many important issues: David recalls the years of racist abuse that pulled him apart.  How important it is to have an integrated sense of identity and the struggle he experienced being black on the outside but white on the inside.  The importance of holding clashing identities in the container of one's being.  How having a psychotic episode can be traumatic to remember, or shameful, so we try to forget it but it haunts us. We also touch on the power of revisiting the experience, which can bring growth and a sense of agency.  How influential our social environment, trans-generational trauma and stress is on mental health. How the history of racism in the UK and USA is different, and we don't talk about our links to slavery in the UK. How in daring to face the past, it is possible to reset one's sense of identity and build a strong foundation from which to go forward.   Books mentioned in episode:  Maybe I Don't Belong Here by David Harewood This Is Not America: Why Black Lives in Britain Matter by Tomiwa Owolade  Watching The English by Kate Fox David's Documentary on Psychosis: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00052mn Support links: Mind: https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/psychosis/useful-contacts/ Rethink Mental Illness: https://www.rethink.org/help-in-your-area/support-groups Turning Point: https://www.turning-point.co.uk/services/mental-health/friends-and-family-mental-health.html  Learn more about your ad choices. David Harewood (MBE, OBE) is an actor who attained international stardom with TV roles in Homeland and The Night Manager. He was the first black actor to play Othello at the National Theatre in London, and has delivered acclaimed performances as Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. His latest role is a white Conservative commentator William F Buckley pitched against the liberal Gore Vidal in the hit play Best of Enemies which has received rave reviews in the West End.But David's early life was marred by racist attacks, and mental illness, culminating in him experiencing a psychotic breakdown. Despite being awarded both an MBE and an OBE he still sees himself as an outsider. “There's a sense of displacement, “he says, “That's been constant throughout my life.” WARNING: contains some strong language and discussion of sensitive topics including: racist attacks, homophobia, drug and alcohol misuse, mental illness, suicide. Blank Check with Griffin & David

Henry Selick waited thirteen years to make his follow-up to CORALINE, and it feels like we've been waiting even longer to hear David's TIFF Airbnb story - a yarn that finally gets unspooled with the help of friend Shirley Li. After that business is taken care of, we try our best to describe Selick's WENDELL & WILD - a film that ranks among the more convoluted of the movies we've covered on the pod. Yet - we still find a lot to love about this tale of demons, hair creme, and private prisons! Stop motion puppets that look just like Key, Peele, AND James Hong! Esteemed British character actor David Harewood as Black Trump! And Ben shines a special spotlight on the film's killer soundtrack. David Harewood is an award-winning actor, star of Supergirl and Homeland, and best-selling author behind Maybe I Don't Belong Here, one of the best-reviewed and best-selling books of 2021. One of the best actors of his generation, with honours from Queen Elizabeth to prove it, David's road to the top had to overcome his psychosis, which at one point drove him to the point of insanity and left him sectioned into a psychiatric hospital. With his life as he knew it on the brink, David rebuilt his life and career to reach the very top of the entertainment business. Scars like this take time to mend, and sometimes leave unexpected traces. David is controversially honest that losing his mind, in a way, helped him find his creativity. This isn't the message that everyone wants to hear, but David's frankness about how his darkest times set him apart from everyone else is a story you don't want to miss. David Harewood is a British actor and presenter who found global fame playing the CIA director David Estes in the acclaimed TV drama series Homeland. He was the first black actor to play Othello at the National theatre in 1997 and took the role of Martin Luther King in the Olivier award-winning play The Mountaintop in 2009. David was born in Birmingham in 1965. After one of his teachers suggested that he should try his luck at acting, he won a place at RADA where he tackled a number of challenging roles including King Lear. After graduating, he performed in a range of television and theatre productions, but by the time he auditioned for Homeland he says he was down to his last £80. He joined the cast of Homeland in 2011 and the following year he was awarded an MBE for services to drama. In 2019 he presented a BBC documentary called Psychosis and Me which told the story of the mental breakdown he experienced as a young man. The programme was nominated for a BAFTA award and was praised by critics for its honest exploration of a difficult subject and for helping to remove some of the stigma around mental health. He went on to present a range of documentaries which addressed subjects close to his heart including the health inequality exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the experience of slavery within the history of his own family. This week it is Mental Health Awareness Week so to talk through his own journey, specifically his experience with psychosis, is actor, director and now author, David Harewood, best known for his roles as CIA Counterterrorism Director David Estes in Homeland. From Birmingham, born to parents from Barbados, David has had huge success on stage, in TV and in Hollywood. Yet, in his recent memoir ‘Maybe I Don't Belong Here', David details the racial abuse he suffered as a black British boy and man growing up in the UK, abuse which ultimately led to, as he describes, his “unravelling” and being sectioned under the Mental Health Act twice. His BAFTA nominated BBC documentary David Harewood: My Psychosis and Me is shocking and insightful particularly around the difference in psychiatric treatment of black people in hospitals. In this episode he talks through his life and experience, the things that led to his psychosis, the voices in his head, the contrasts between America and the UK and how he became a successful actor despite all of this psychological upheaval and racial abuse.
