Recorded live from the CDS Midwinter Meeting Podcast Lounge, Alan had a great conversation with veteran implant dentist and educator, Dr. Tim Kosinski! With nearly four decades and over 20,000 implants placed, Dr. Kosinski shares his "recipe for success," emphasizing critical thinking, foundational knowledge, and the importance of mentorship in the evolving world of implant dentistry. Key Takeaways: Master the Recipe: Success in implants requires a step-by-step foundational approach. Don't skip steps in planning and execution. Think Critically: Placing the implant isn't the hardest part; treatment planning, patient communication, understanding anatomy, and managing potential complications are key. Visualize the end result before you start. Show Up: In-person learning, networking, and mentorship are irreplaceable for developing complex skills. You can't master implants solely via YouTube or Zoom. Tech is a Tool, Not the Master: Embrace CBCT, digital scanning, and other tech for diagnostics and planning, but remember your role as the clinician treating a person. Bone is Gold: Prioritize atraumatic extractions (e.g., using Physics Forceps) and routine socket preservation (grafting) to maintain options for patients, whether for implants or conventional restorations. Dr. Kozinski recommends the OsteoGen Plug for predictable socket grafting without a membrane in many cases. Ethics First: Provide options, communicate clearly, save teeth when viable, and avoid overtreating or cookie-cutter approaches (especially regarding full-arch cases). Know Your Limits: Start with straightforward cases (like single posterior implants), build confidence and skill, and don't hesitate to refer complex cases – even high-volume clinicians collaborate with specialists. Keep Learning: Dentistry constantly evolves. Commit to lifelong continuing education! Dr. Michael Weinstein interviews Dr. Larry Kosinski about new data from SonarMD describing the association between anxiety and increased risk for flares and higher disease severity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and emphasizing the importance of integrating mental health support within value-based care models for IBD management. According to the study, Patients with anxiety symptoms were significantly more likely to have high disease severity, and over a six-month follow-up, patients with anxiety exhibited a nearly doubled flare rate. The study suggests that mental health factors like anxiety play a critical role in the clinical course of IBD and that by identifying and addressing psychological contributors, value-based care models can be refined to better support patients with chronic digestive diseases. Join Dr. Weinstein and Dr. Kosinski as they explore the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to IBD management and what GI physicians can do to ensure that their patients have the resources they need. The Stanford Business School professor Michal Kosinski has spent his career warning about the corrosive impact of technology, and particularly social media, on democratic institutions and individual freedom. The Polish born academic gained notoriety for his research at Cambridge University on how social media data could predict intimate personal traits. His work became particularly relevant during the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2016, leading to significant legal consequences for Facebook, including a $50 billion fine. In this KEEN ON conversation with Kosinski, recorded in Munich at DLD, he emphasizes that Facebook wasn't inherently malicious but failed to understand the full implications of their intrusive technology. Kosinksi connects social media's rise with the growth of populism, explaining how platforms enabled figures like Trump and even Bernie Sanders to bypass traditional political gatekeepers. Kosinski also discusses his controversial 2017 research showing that AI can predict personal characteristics, including sexual orientation, from facial features. On privacy, Kosinski believes that complete privacy protection may be impossible in the modern digital age. Instead, he advocates for building social and legal systems that make privacy invasions less dangerous. Looking to the future, Kosinski expresses short-term optimism about AI's potential to improve lives but long-term concern about the risks of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He notes that while we may see increased prosperity and advancement in the near future, the exponential acceleration of technological progress means long-term risks could materialize much sooner than expected.Michal Kosinski is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. His research interests encompass both human and artificial cognition. His current work centers on examining the psychological processes in Large Language Models and leveraging Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, and computational techniques to model and predict human behavior. He co-authored Handbook of Social Psychology and Modern Psychometrics, two popular textbooks, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in prominent journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature Computational Science, Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Machine Learning, and Scientific Reports, which have been cited over 22,000 times. He is among the Top 1% of the Highly Cited Researchers according to Clarivate. His research has inspired a cover of The Economist, a 2014 theatre production titled “Privacy,” several TED talks, and a video game. It has been featured in thousands of press articles, books, podcasts, and documentaries. He received a Rising Star award from the Association of Psychological Science (2015) and an Early Achievement Award from the European Association of Personality Psychology (2023). He was behind the first press article warning against Cambridge Analytica. His research exposed the privacy risks they exploited and assessed the effectiveness of their methods. More about his role in uncovering their actions can be found in Steven Levy's insightful book Facebook: The Inside Story and Sander van der Linden's article, “Weapons of Mass Persuasion.” He earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Cambridge and two master's degrees in psychometrics and social psychology. Before his current appointment, he held positions as a post-doctoral scholar in Stanford's Computer Science Department, Deputy Director of the University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre, and a researcher in Microsoft Research's Machine Learning Group.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. It's an all-crazy day as Jim and Greg discuss the unhinged political intolerance of a former mainstream media reporter, professors withholding grades over the consequences for anti-Israel protests, & tortured language and logic at the Pentagon over our policy in Gaza. First, they sigh as former NBC News and CNN reporter Michelle Kosinski goes on a Twitter rant about how she is "haunted" by a dinner she had with people she refers to as "closeted MAGAts." Why? Because some were Ivy League grads who didn't want to send their kids there and others disagreed with the left's climate change narrative. Next, they rip the faculty members at the University of North Carolina who are threatening not to turn in end-of-semester grades for any of their students unless the school reverses the suspensions of 15 students for breaking the law during the anti-Israel demonstrations. The UNC provost recommends sanctions against any instructor who does not turn in grades on time. Which side will blink? Finally, they unload on Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the Biden administration for torturing language and logic, as Austin claims the 1,000 U.S. military personnel who will be constructing a pier on the Gaza coast will not be considered "boots on the ground."

It's The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast's fifth anniversary season kick-off episode! I am honored that three-time Challenge champion and Challenge Mania co-host Derrick Kosinski visited the podcast! Derrick began his Reality TV journey on Road Rules: X-Treme, where he and his teammates, including fellow Challenge legend Jodi Weatherton, completed 13 missions across Argentina and Chile. He debuted on The Challenge on the Battle of the Sexes and competed in nine additional seasons, where he made the final five times and won championships on The Inferno 3, The Island, and The Ruins. Throughout his time on the main show, Derrick won 43 daily challenges and nine elimination wins, earning $210,970. The last time he appeared in the main franchise was on Vendettas, whereas a Mercenary, Derrick, took out then-newcomer Joss Mooney in the Crazy Eight game. Derrick returned to The Challenge for three installments in the Paramount+ series: The Challenge: All-Stars. In the first season, Derrick never saw an Arena Elimination game, but he and his partner, Jisela Delgado, placed eleventh after they failed to place the first checkpoint. In the spin-off's sophomore season, Derrick Kosinski won the first two daily challenges but was blindsided into elimination when longtime friend Brad Fiorenza sent him home. In The Challenge: All-Stars' third season, Derrick competed against cast members who made it to the finals. Derrick played an excellent game this season and even defeated All-Stars 2 champion MJ Garrett in the Star Struck elimination game after the latter called him out. Sadly, one of his longtime rivals, Nehemiah Clark, eliminated Derrick one episode before the Season Three finals in the infamous Pole Wrestle arena game. This was the same game that Derrick lost to another rival and Nehemiah's best friend, Wes Bergmann, in The Duel. When he is not competing on The Challenge, Derrick hosts the popular Challenge Mania Podcast with co-host (and Jake's Take friend) Scott Yager. Since 2017, the duo has covered the franchise and sat down with show icons, including Johnny Bananas, CT Tamburello, Cara Maria Sorbello, and Aneesa Ferreira, and current-day fan-favorites such as Amber Borztotra, Chris Underwood, Jonna Mannion, and Paulie Calafiore. Also, the duo connects show fans with their favorite cast members as a part of Challenge Mania Live. Atlanta, Austin, Buffalo, Chicago, Denver, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, and New York City have been previous stops on the live show. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Derrick Kosinski revealed his favorite Challenge seasons, spoke about his iconic elimination matches against Wes and Joss (including reacting to Joss's commentary in 2020), and Challenge Mania's evolution.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/jakes-take-with-jacob-elyachar/support.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Kyle and Trevor review Joseph Kosinski's, Top Gun: Maverick (2022)! A long gestating project originally pitched as “legacy sequel” from original Top Gun (1986) director, Tony Scott, Top Gun: Maverick (2022) is refreshingly sincere crowd pleaser from Joseph Kosinski. In spite of the film losing Scott's participation due to his untimely passing, Kosinski, having previously directed the aesthetically wondrous (but emotionally overwrought) Tron: Legacy (2010), as well as the Tom Cruise vehicle Oblivion (2013), was a natural fit to helm Top Gun: Maverick. Bearing a structure more akin to an action heavy heist/caper rather than the original's sports drama format, Top Gun: Maverick is often blunt, and always straightforward with its storytelling, though in many ways, these attributes prove to be its greatest strengths. Deliberately repetitious, both in terms of dialogue and in terms of structure, Top Gun: Maverick can be grating in its early sequences, however at a certain point it becomes apparent that the film is training you, much in the way its training its characters, to identify and anticipate the stakes of the drama in order to maximize the impact of its bombastic finale. Beautifully shot, and possessed of a health dose of (rather than heaping pile of) symmetry and reverence to/for the original Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick is the rare “legacy sequel” that puts a premium on continuing the story of its protagonist e.g. “Maverick”, rather than exploiting him as an ambassador between audiences and the next generation of twee action figure heroes and heroines. Beautiful elemental in the way it communicates with the viewer, Top Gun: Maverick's soul is made of equal parts heart and cheese, but make no mistake, it is top of the line crowd pleasing action cinema, and entirely worthy of its incredible success. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 24, 2022 is: pathos PAY-thahss noun Pathos refers to some element of an experience or of an artistic representation that evokes compassion or pity. The word also refers to a feeling of sympathetic pity. // Our knowledge of the hero's tragic end adds an element of pathos to the story of his early success. See the entry > Examples: "It's all in good fun, though. This is Maverick's movie, as the title declares. As a character study of an iconic hero, Cruise and Kosinski do fine work, plumbing pathos and power out of a mythic One Last Flight." — Eric Webb, Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, 27 May 2022 Did you know? The Greek word páthos means "experience, misfortune, emotion, condition,” and comes from Greek path-, meaning “experience, undergo, suffer.” In English, pathos usually refers to the element in an experience or in an artistic work that makes us feel compassion, pity, or sympathy. The word is a member of a big family: empathy is the ability to share someone else's feelings. Pathetic (in its gentlest uses) describes things that move us to pity. Though pathology is not literally "the study of suffering," it is "the study of diseases." Other relatives of pathos include sympathy, apathy, and antipathy.
