When James Baldwin went on the Dick Cavett Show in 1969, he was asked a very loaded question: why aren't Black people more optimistic? Jim Crow laws had been outlawed, Black people were becoming mayors and successful businesspeople… so why was he still talking about race?Obviously racism didn't “end” with the Civil War, or the Civil Rights Act, or Obama's election. In fact, Donald Trump has spurred a resurgence — there's been a nearly 50% increase in white supremacy groups just in the past few years. And yet he's waging a war on Diversity Equity and Inclusion programs, Critical Race Theory, and the very notion that racism still exists. But racism – and anti-Blackness in particular – is still a powerful force. It's built into the very structure of the country. It shows up in politics, medicine, sports, education, and even eBay.In this week's episode of Okay But Why, we explore the history of anti-Blackness in America, how it manifests to this day, and what we can do about it. It's a story of pain, passion, and a woman's sheer power. “Janis Joplin: Piece of Her Heart” is available NOW wherever you stream your podcasts ❤️

In 2003, The Redwalls, a really good band hailing from Chicago suburb Deerfield, IL kicked off their album “Universal Blues” by encouraging a “Colorful Revolution”; in a most Beatle-esque Banger fashion. By coincidence (?), a mere 31 years earlier, there was a colorful “Daytime Revolution” as John, Yoko, and friends took over a week's worth of “The Mike Douglas Show” - a.k.a. the guy all of us, if we're being honest, initially confused/conflated with “The Dick Cavett Show”. This new, soon-to-stream documentary examines these historic episodes, and had a brief in-theaters showing on what would've been John's 84th birthday. Tony saw the film solo in Chicago suburb Glenview, IL, as T.J. handled the un-related, un-paid improv rehearsal many miles from his home - and even further from #GlenviewsFamousDawgPark. The result is a new-ish phase Beatles podcast, reproduced for streaming by Producer Casey. Roll up for this special UBP field trip, an aural journey (cue: “Faithfully”) of Tony documenting a documentary, as documentary commentary from T.J. documents Tony's documentary commentary of the documentary's documentary commentary. Lillian Hellman (1905-1984), a playwright and novelist who sued writer and critic Mary McCarthy (1912-1989) after Mary McCarthy called her "a dishonest writer" on the "Dick Cavett Show." The suit captured public attention, and the legal battle became one of the most legendary feuds in modern contemporary literature. GARY WRIGHT 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 4 with RAY SHASHO Gary Wright (April 26, 1943 – September 4, 2023) Gary Wright is a celestial keyboard virtuoso, idyllic songwriter, and vocalist with powerful soulful pipes. Wright is an innovator of the synthesizer and over the years has managed to condense his many synthesized melodies into a single keyboard strapped around his neck. Although born and raised in Cresskill, New Jersey, Wright founded the British rock group Spooky Tooth in 1967. Wright would later become most recognized for his two solo hit singles “Dream Weaver” in 1975 and “Love Is Alive” in 1976. Gary Wright will be joining the ‘Sail Rock 2013' tour along with Christopher Cross, Orleans, Firefall, John Ford Coley, Robbie Dupree and Player beginning August 5th in West Allis, Wisconsin. Visit Pollstar.com for all the latest concert dates. SPOOKY TOOTH: Gary Wright joined the band 'Art' in 1967. The ‘V.I.P.'S' morphed into 'Art' after several lineup changes since its inception in 1963. The British R&B music ensemble had featured various distinguished musicians including Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Jimmy Henshaw, Keith Emerson, Luther Grosvenor, Walter Johnstone and Mike Kellie. Keith Emerson (The Nice, ELP) left in 1967 when the name was changed to Art. The band eventually turned into Spooky Tooth with a lineup of Wright (organ, keyboards, and vocals), Harrison (vocals, keyboards) Ridley (bassist), Grosvenor (guitar, vocals) and Kellie (drums). In 1968, Spooky Tooth released their debut album entitled … It's All About. The album featured covers by Janis Ian and Bob Dylan. Most of the other tracks were either written or co-written by Gary Wright. The bands next release Spooky Two (1969) released on Island Records was hailed by critics as one of their finest recordings. The album featured many of the bands standards including “Evil Woman” and “Better by You, Better Than Me” a tune written by Wright and eventually covered by Judas Priest in 1978. Spooky Tooth quickly became a highly sought concert attraction and a mainstay on progressive rock radio. The band shared the stage with such legendary music acts as Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Bassist Greg Ridley left in 1969 to join Humble Pie, Andy Leigh replaced him. Also in 1969, the group released Ceremony (Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry album) a progressive collaboration with the French electronic composer. Session musician: Wright left Spooky Tooth briefly to produce albums for Traffic and Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller and his production company. Gary Wright became an esteemed session musician and was asked to play on George Harrison's triple- album set All Things Must Pass (1970). Wright and Harrison began a long lasting friendship and musical collaboration that included Wright playing or sharing songwriting tasks on several of Harrison's subsequent albums including … Living in the Material World (1973), Dark Horse (1974), Extra Texture (Read All About It)(1975), Thirty Three & 1/3(1976), George Harrison(1979), Cloud Nine (1987). The Last Puff album (1970) primarily featured Mike Harrison while Wright focused on other projects. The release featured an incredible cover version of The Beatles, “I Am The Walrus.” Joe Cocker Grease Band members Henry McCullough, Chris Stainton and Alan Spenner were brought into the studio to work on the album. In 1971, Gary Wright performed “Two Faced Man” with George Harrison on the Dick Cavett Show. He also played piano on Harry Nilsson's #1 hit, a Badfinger cover tune entitled, “Without You.” In 1972, Gary Wright and Mike Harrison reformed Spooky Tooth with a different lineup. The new lineup featured future Foreigner founder and guitarist Mick Jones. Subsequent Spooky Tooth albums … (You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1973), Witness (1973), The Mirror (1974) and Cross Purpose (1999) (Reunion album without Wright, Greg Ridley returned). Spooky Tooth disbanded in 1974. Gary Wright and George Harrison visited India in 1974 as a guest of Ravi Shankar. Wright developed a long-term relationship with Shankar after the visit. SOLO CAREER: Gary Wright released two critically acclaimed solo albums on A&M Records … Extraction in 1971 and Footprint in 1972. Wright signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1974 and achieved his biggest commercial success with the release of The Dream Weaver album (1975). The single “Dream Weaver” reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and #1 on the Cash Box charts. The album also spawned the hit “Love is Alive” (1976) reaching #2 on Billboard's singles chart. The album peaked at #7 on Billboard's Hot 100 albums chart. The song “Dream Weaver” has been spotlighted on numerous television shows and motion pictures. “Love is Alive” was covered by several legendary artists including … Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker and Richie Havens. The Dream Weaver album featured guest musicians …guitarist Ronnie Montrose, drummers Jim Keltner and Andy Newmark, Hammond organist David Foster and Bobby Lyle on additional synthesizers. In 1981, Gary Wright scored again commercially with “Really Wanna Know You” (#16 Billboard Singles Hit). Gary Wright Solo albums … Extraction (1971), Footprint (1972), The Dream Weaver (1975), The Light of Smiles(1977), Touch and Gone (1978), Headin' Home (1979), The Right Place (1981), Who I Am (1988), First Signs of Life (1995), Human Love (1999), Waiting to Catch the Light (2008), The Light of a Million Suns (EP) (2008), Connected (2010). In 2004, Wright, Harrison and Kellie reunited Spooky Tooth for several concerts in Germany. As a result of their triumphant return, they released the Nomad Poets DVD in 2007. The same lineup played a series of European dates in 2008. Most recently: Gary Wright toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band in 2008. In 2010, Wright released his latest studio album entitled Connected and features guest artists … Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Gary Wright is currently writing his 'memoir' for the Penguin Group and should be available sometime near the end of 2014. I had the great pleasure of chatting with Gary Wright recently about ‘Sail Rock 2013,' Spooky Tooth, George Harrison, the music business, metaphysics and much-much more. Support us on PayPal!
In 1990 the airwaves were set alight with the arrival of Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel to BBC radio. Based on material from a series of the same name broadcast on American radio in the early thirties, these modern adaptations benefited hugely from great production, excellent scripts and a highly talented cast, particularly the two lead performers Michael Roberts and Frank Lazarus, both of whom totally captured the energy and spirit of Groucho & Chico Marx, retaining their timeless character while giving them a contemporary tweak. The then up-and-coming BBC radio wunderkind Dirk Maggs (who later gained audio industry national treasure status via his collaborations with the likes of Neil Gaiman) directed the show and it ran for three series on BBC Radio 4, attracting huge listening figures and much popular acclaim. One of its biggest champions was a man who by this point in his life was critical about what he considered the state of modern comedy: Spike Milligan. Confessing to having been delighted and enchanted by the series – and coming from a huge Marx Brothers fan from whom he had drawn much inspiration this was high praise indeed – Spike was invited onto the show. The former Goon ended up appearing twice, and despite nerves seemed to relish every moment of it. This week Goon Pod has the rare honour of playing host to Dirk, Michael and Frank, who look back at the series and recall how it came about, sharing favourite moments and behind-the-scenes gossip and remembering the rather challenging circumstances in which they welcomed Spike onto the show. News of the remake was huge at the time and received international television coverage from the likes of CNN. We hear some rare clips and Frank talks about appearing on the Dick Cavett Show in an earlier iteration of Chico, while Michael explains about how ad-libbing was positively encouraged. There is also tribute paid to Mark Brisenden, the man behind the scripts, and the supporting cast including Lorelei King and Graham Hoadly, not to mention the great Dick Vosburgh, the accomplished comedy writer who did so much to revive the Marx Brothers in the seventies and eighties and who acted as consultant on FS&F. A must-listen for fans of the Marx Brothers, the Goons or great comedy in general!

Welcome to the next episode in our special series on TV Talk Shows. Big talk show moments, especially the controversial ones, provide snapshots that we can use to examine our politics and culture at a singular point in time. Some of the moments we discuss in this series may be unfamiliar to you or they may seem obscure or forgotten, but that's the point. We're here to preserve TV Herstory. Today, when alternative facts are part of our daily life, it's especially instructive to look back more than 40 years at a grudge match over Truth and Reputation that played out on The Dick Cavett Show in 1980 and beyond. The combatants were two opinionated, strong-willed women: playwright/author Lillian Hellman and novelist/critic Mary McCarthy. Thank you for listening to Advanced TV Herstory. I encourage you to learn more about these women starting with the resources below. What if you could receive the adulation and respect of strangers but not from your own family-or even yourself? In Wild Strawberries (1957), Ingmar Bergman dramatizes a journey into a man's memories, insecurities, and fears in a way that may borrow the technique of Death of a Salesman but not its final scenes or the fate of its hero. For all we hear about the bleakness of Bergman's vision, the film is ultimately affirming. The world screams, “Physician, heal thyself”—and he does! Join us for an extended conversation that also includes how the film resembles A Christmas Carol and Casablanca. The opening clip is Bergman talking on The Dick Cavett Show in 1971 about the final closeup of Wild Strawberries. Admirers of Bergman's films will want to read his autobiography, My Life in Pictures. We're back with a delightful conversation about surprisingly chill hangs. Joining us is brilliant writer, director, and dog lover, Robin Comisar. We discuss moments in the Coens' films where the story sneaks up on you with unexpectedly tender, guileless, and open-hearted scenes. In these moments of connection, characters often go beyond their “type” or “role”. It's weird, it's satisfying, and it's vibey. Thanks again to Robin for joining us!!! Michael Moore celebrates our country's birthday week by going after the Supreme Court and suggesting ways to remove the Justices who have perjured themselves, been caught talking huge sums of money from billionaires and how all six right wing Justices have committed various ethical and financial infractions — but have not been sanctioned or removed. Oh, they've also taken wholesale rights away from women, the LGBTQ+ community and people of color. Plus, they've gutted the EPA, expanded gun “rights,” and killed Biden's student loan debt relief plan. The Supreme Court is now the most disliked and distrusted government institution in the land. Michael goes over how their removal of the Roe v Wade decision has the vast majority of the country against them now. And enough of the righties on the court are worried about their “legacy” or their possible removal from the court. The more we organize against them, the better it will get. Time to rock this not-so-supreme boat. The story of Elena Hoyos and the man who called himself Count Carl von Cosel is a Key West legend. It's a true story if unbelievable in its macabre details. Karl Tanzler, though everybody still refers to him as Von Cosel showed up in Key West in the 1920s where he worked as a radiologist at the local hospital. That's where he met Elena Hoyos. She was a beautiful young Cuban-American woman who had tuberculosis. Von Cosel fell in love with her, and he treated her for her illness. When the treatments did not work and she died that didn't end their story. Two years later, he took her body from the mausoleum and lived with it.... For seven years. My Special Guest is Ben Harrison Ben Harrison is the author of Undying Love, a shocking true Key West story of a passion that defied death. In writing this definitive and mesmerising tale of the most obsessive love imaginable, Ben Harrison did his homework thoroughly, studying numerous press accounts from the 1930s as well as the von Cosel memoir. What makes Undying Love so special are the interviews Ben conducted with those old enough to have known the story participants and the way things were in Key West during the 1930s... Ben has been a guest on The Howard Stern Show, This American Life, Dr. Demento, The Dick Cavett Show and more. Winner of the Adeline Turner Award for Outstanding Performing Artist, he has recorded ten studio albums and is currently working on his fourth full-length theatre musical. "Ben Harrison separates fact from myth and untangles the thread of intrigue in this gothic tale of obsessive love and melancholy madness." Danny Elfman, musician, composer, record producer, and actor. "This story has it all. Obsession, madness, even a sweet May December romance." Florida Sun Sentinel Karl Tanzler Karl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, was a radiologist in Key West, Florida, who developed an obsession for one of his patients, Elena Milagro Hoyos. The beautiful young woman died from tuberculosis in 1931. With her parents' permission von Cosel had an above ground mausoleum built for her. He visited the tomb every night and by 1933 he had taken the body home. Elena Hoyos Elena de Hoyos came from a small family. They couldn't afford an elaborate funeral after her death, her father made cigars and her mother was a maid. The Count made sure that Elena received a proper burial instead of the shoddy wooden box, which was the plan according to her family. Tanzler had Elena buried in a huge mausoleum, equipped with lighting, electricity, and a telephone connected to Elena's grave. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Delve into the story of The Count and Elena, who they were and how their stories became entangled 2. Explore the responses from the local and wider community, family and friends 3. Hear from Ben Harrison on the subject who spent years researching and interviewing people around this case 4. Gain an understanding of the historical backdrop of Key West at the time. Book Vs. Movie:The Little FoxesThe Lillian Hellman 1939 Play Vs. the 1941 Bette Davis FilmPlaywright Lillian Hellman is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century who had a complicated life filled with love affairs and massive success and was the toast of Broadway for works such as The Little Foxes, The Children's Hour and Watch on the Rhine. She was also a House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) pariah and was called a liar by author Mary McCarthy on The Dick Cavett Show in 1979. Between controversies and celebrations, she had a 30-year relationship with fellow writer Dashiell Hammett and had many of her works adapted into film. The New Orleans native lived HARD in her 79 years before passing in 1984. The Little Foxes is a semi-autobiographical tale of a 1900 Southern family scheming to gain wealth by any means possible. Regina Hubbard Giddens (played by the legendary Talulah Bankhead on Broadway) is a woman who is married to a man she despises (Horace) and has two brothers (Benjamin and Oscar) who have family money that she wants to get her hands on. His many health problems interfere with her good time. The title comes from the Song of Solomon of the King James Bible: “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” William Wyler directed the 1941 movie and followed closely with the original material (save for a few fewer racial slurs!) Wyler and MGM head Samuel Goldwyn loved the original production but felt that Bankhead would not draw in an audience like Bette Davis (who was extremely reluctant to take the part.) Much of the original Broadway cast did make it to the film, including Dan Duryea and Patricia Collinge. Wyler and Davis (former lovers) fought throughout the production, with Davis insisting on her changes to the story and wearing heavy makeup to look older. Forty years later, she put up with having a difficult reputation with widely known easygoing journalist Mike Wallace in 1980 for 60 Minutes. The film would go on to be a hit and would earn 9 Academy Award nominations. So between the play and movie--which did the Margos like better? Piggybacking on Robert Bader's superb “Groucho & Cavett” documentary, we are joined by Brett Leveridge, Marxfest co-host and house manager for Noah's “I'll Say She Is” revival, for an in-depth look at more of Groucho's late-career talk and game show appearances. Groucho's wonderfully disruptive guest shots on “What's My Line?” “The Tonight Show” and “The Dating Game” are dissected, as well as his surprisingly serious and thoughtful debate with William F. Buckley, Jr. on “Firing Line.” We also examine Groucho's fascinating “Dick Cavett Show” encounter with Dan Rowan. …and don't worry; all of these clips are available for viewing on our blog at marxbrotherscouncilpodcast.com In addition, Brett tells his backstory of becoming a Marx fan in Oklahoma City, and we pay tribute to the late Richard J. Anobile.

If you lived in Brentwood in the late 1960s and 70s, you may have encountered a charming, transplanted Englishman named Raymond Buckland. You many not have realized it at the time, but Buckland was in the process of establishing Wicca as a religion in America. A private practitioner at first, introduced to Wicca by Gerald Gardner, Buckland was soon thrust into the public eye by the press. He then helped popularize Gardnerian Wicca through television appearances, newspaper interviews, and his own numerous writings on the subject. He went on to found his own museum and his own tradition of Seax Wicca. On today's episode, we talk with Peter Ward (Brentwood Public Library) and Ellen Edelstein (Brentwood Historical Society) about Buckland's time in Brentwood, his connections to the library, and his position in the area's long history of the colorful and spiritually-minded. Susan appeared in three Broadway shows and twenty-eight films before she turned her back on a show business career she never really enjoyed or wanted. The role of her lifetime came when she married Harpo Marx in 1936. Together, they raised four adopted children and enjoyed one of Hollywood's happiest and most successful unions. But their twenty-year age difference made Susan a young widow in 1964. Speaking of Harpo is Susan's account of her more than thirty-year adventure with Harpo including encounters with people like Charlie Chaplin, William Randolph Hearst, Salvador Dalí, Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes, Helen Keller, Bugsy Siegel, Sam Goldwyn, Ginger Rogers, and of course, the Marx Brothers. The book provides an inside look at the family and pulls no punches when discussing her brothers-in-law, who weren't always her favorite comedians. The book was released in July 2022 and would make an excellent gift for that Marx Brother's fan or golden age film buff on your list. You can pick up a copy at www.speakingofharpo.com and we hope you enjoy the second half of our interview with Robert Bader.

Some things never change. Well, not Barbara Hershey's name. Born Barbara Lynn Herzstein, Hershey changed her professional name to Barbara Seagull for a period of time in the early 1970s. Much against the advice of literally everyone. She appeared on The Dick Cavett Show to discuss the reasons behind the change (buckle up) and ended up breastfeeding her son during the broadcast. Since this was 1975, you can imagine the hysteria. This week, Mark walks Kasey through the madness of early '70s Hollywood, the perils of being "kooky," and a whole lot of spoilers for decades-old films. The Mamas and the Papas. When Mary McCarthy said of Lillian Hellman, "Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the,'" Lillian Hellman laughed. Then she sued McCarthy for $2.2 million. But that wasn't the end of it. This tossed off zinger on The Dick Cavett Show has resulted in a Broadway play with music, another stage play, and enough articles and think pieces to constitute a content farm. What is it about this lawsuit and these two writers that fascinates people more than 40 years later? Why are we still talking about Hellman v. McCarthy? Well, because it's a damn good line for one. But as Mark points out this week, there's a lot that one can bring to this feud. And everyone has. If you've never heard of Barbara Loden's Wanda (1970), Cinphomaniac is here this week to correct that. Marcus and Dana throughly dissect this once forgotten masterpiece of early American Independent Cinema - the one and only feature film its mesmerizing star, Barbara Loden, ever would direct in her all too brief life. They discuss Loden's incredibly nuanced and detailed performance as the title character, as well as its level of immense specificity in every other aspect, with its emphasis on naturalism, transgression, power, and class. Also discussed is the rich legacy of the type of complex female driven stories that Wanda would herald, from filmmakers like Andrea Arnold, Jane Campion, and Chloe Zhao, as well as the eye opening TV appearance Loden made to promote the film on The Dick Cavett Show. Don't miss this one!

At the end of 1968 the United States was a country at war abroad and in chaos at home. The American people were asking the same question that movie star Lauren Bacall expressed to the country on "The Dick Cavett Show", "What has become of our country, is our country worth saving? "In January 1969, a new President, but a leader many had written off as a failure years before returned to the national stage to prove to the nation that it was not only a country worth saving but it was still the Greatest Country on Earth. But it is a story that came with a high price and for the past 47 years a horribly unfair and one sided story has been promoted across the land. But now,Finally, the remarkable Presidency of Richard Nixon will be told, here on Season 4 of "Bridging the Political Gap" starting in October 2021.
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, Dan and Conor bring in the big guns(One Heat Minute Productions creator Blake Howard) to discuss one of the great filmmakers: Alan J. Pakula. After making a name for himself as a producer (he earned an Oscar nomination for To Kill a Mockingbird), Pakula emerged as a seminal New Hollywood director with his “paranoia trilogy:” Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974), and All the President's Men (1976). And yet, he is rarely acknowledged in the upper-echelon of great 70s filmmakers like Coppola or De Palma. On this episode we focus on Pakula's underseen, unassuming western Comes a Horseman, his over-cooked domestic thriller Consenting Adults, and his final film The Devil's Own, which stars Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. Conor, Blake and Dan also take worthwhile detours to discuss Presumed Innocent and The Pelican Brief. This is a wide-ranging talk, thanks in large part to our guest's deep wealth of knowledge on the subject. Topics include Brad Pitt's accent in The Devil's Own and that it's pretty good actually (!), what exactly auteur theory means (both Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael come up, of course), how there are no consenting adults in Consenting Adults, and what we've lost from the blockbusters of eras past. Further research includes this piece on The Devil's Own production problems and a fascinating episode of The Dick Cavett Show, featuring a subdued, cutting Pakula.
