Hille har sett House of Hummingbird, koreanska regissören Kim Boras coming of age-film om tonårsbekymmer i Seoul 1994.

In this half of the episode, we look at Bergman Island (2021), written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps as a couple who have come to Faro Island as fans of Ingmar Bergman and want to take the tourist view while they complete their own work in a house they've rented. Like some Bergman films, as the characters move deeper into the story, the line between the audience and the actors begins to dissolve, and we're reminded that we're watching a movie starring these actors-as-characters. It's hard to describe in writing but Bergman fans will understand instantly when they see the film. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around, the directorial inspiration is Howard Hawks, with a couple of fairly recent films: Speed (1994) directed by Jan de Bont, and The Martian (2015), directed by Ridley Scott. Escuchar audio

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're revisiting a conversation from the 60th New York Film Festival with Mia Hansen-Løve on One Fine Morning, moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim, followed by our recent conversation with Jordan Peele, Keke Palmer, and more on the making of NOPE. Few filmmakers are as adept at exploring the contours of modern love and grief as Mia Hansen-Løve, whose intensely poignant and deeply personal latest drama stars Léa Seydoux as Sandra, a professional translator and single mother at a crossroads. Her father, rapidly deteriorating from a neurological illness, will soon require facility care, and her new lover is a married dad whose unavailability only seems to draw her nearer to him, despite—or because of—the fact that she's going through an overwhelming time in her life. Hansen-Løve, so finely observant of the small nuances of human interaction, creates, in harmonious concert with a magnificent Seydoux, a complicated portrait of a woman torn between romantic desire and familial tragedy that is a marvel of emotional and formal economy. One Fine Morning opens Friday, January 27, in our theaters. Get showtimes and tickets: filmlinc.org/morning Following a special 70mm screening of NOPE during our Jordan Peele curated series, The Lost Rider: A Chronicle of Hollywood Sacrifice, NOPE director Jordan Peele, lead Keke Palmer, producer Ian Cooper, editor Nicholas Monsour & composer Michael Abels joined FLC Programmer Tyler Wilson to discuss the making of the sci-fi-horror.

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a conversation from the 60th New York Film Festival, moderated by Film Comment Co-Deputy Editor Devika Girish. This talk brought together the directors behind two stunning works of autofiction in the NYFF60 lineup. One Fine Morning by leading French filmmaker (and NYFF staple) Mia Hansen-Løve and Aftersun, the debut feature by Charlotte Wells, both center on father-daughter relationships drawn from the directors' own lives, exploring tenderness and trauma, love and loss with formal ingenuity and emotional force. Both films also feature powerhouse performances—Paul Mescal in Aftersun and Léa Seydoux in One Fine Morning—that challenge and reinvigorate routine cinematic portrayals of femininity, masculinity, and intimacy.  Hansen-Løve and Wells partook in an extended conversation about the process of making art out of one's life, giving filmic shape to the workings of memory and time, reimagining the contours of “women's cinema,” and more. NYFF Talks were presented by HBO. Charlotte Wells's Aftersun is now playing daily in our theaters. For showtimes and tickets, go to filmlinc.org/aftersun.

If Isabelle Huppert is not your favorite actor, she's the favorite actor of someone you know. Guaranteed. There's something about her that is unlike any other actor that has ever been on film. But it's really hard to talk about what that “something” is. In each performance, in every film she's made, she has such a command of the character, the text, the frame, that we place her in equal authorship with the directors she's worked with, who happen to be some of most interesting and important in the last half-century—Jean Luc-Godard, Michael Haneke, Claude Chabrol, Michael Cimino, Claire Denis, Joachim Trier, Mia Hansen-Løve, Hong Sang-soo, to name a few. She always found a way to play complex, multi-dimensional, often morally questionable characters, even in a time when the female variety were in short supply. In this woefully short episode, she talks about some of the important, yet somewhat mysterious, aspects of her approach to the craft—curiosity, collaborating with the director, the present moment, listening to the language of the camera, and much more.  A retrospective of 29 of Isabelle Huppert's best films begins Friday October 7th at Film Forum in New York City.  Follow Back To One on Instagram Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. No small talk, no celebrity stories, no inane banter—just the work.

At this year's Cannes, she continued her streak with starring roles in two excellent, very different movies: One Fine Morning by Mia Hansen-Løve, where Seydoux plays a young mother grieving the cognitive decline of her father; and Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg, where the actress is a dystopian performance artist alongside Viggo Mortensen. For our latest podcast, Film Comment Co-Deputy Editor Devika Girish sat down with Seydoux for a windswept conversation on a rooftop on the Croisette (with a surprise cameo by Viggo Mortensen!). A screenwriter couple’s stay on Ingmar Bergman’s home island of Fårö inspires an honest look at how women are represented in movies, in the latest thoughtful film from Mia Hansen-Løve. French director Mia Hansen-Løve is a real cinephile. She loves to think and talk about film history and the works of famous filmmakers. Although she's partly of Danish heritage, she grew up in France. Even so, she's been influenced, like so many others, by the films of the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Like him, she often examines relationships between the sexes, and conflicts in personal life. Unlike Bergman, her films generally avoid heightened dramatic events. Instead she focuses steadily on everyday life, and the ordinary changes occurring in people's emotions and viewpoints over time. She also likes to portray the inner lives of women, although not exclusively. This comparison and contrast with Bergman has resulted in her latest film, entitled Bergman Island. It concerns two screenwriters, who also happen to be a couple, Chris and Tony, played by Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth. They've decided to visit Fårö, the island off the coast of Sweden where Bergman had lived, renting a little house and hoping that being there for a few weeks will inspire them to finish their separate screenplays. Hansen-Løve and her two lead actors deftly portray the mundane details of getting used to a new vacation place, with Roth in particular showing how relaxed and believably casual a performer he can be. They decide to watch a Bergman film, settling on Cries and Whispers, and the experience, as you might expect if you're familiar with that movie, is intense. Krieps's character, Chris, is especially conflicted. She comprehends the great artistry, but doesn't really like the way Bergman portrays women. As the film goes on, we start to understand that Hansen-Løve intends to present us with an alternative version of how women might more realistically behave than in a Bergman film. It's a clever strategy in which she honors the famous director while criticizing him through her own different stylistic choices. But soon it stops being a commentary on Bergman and goes in its own direction. The film's centerpiece occurs when she asks Tony to listen to her ideas about where to go with her screenplay. As she narrates, we are taken to a film within the film, starring Mia Wasikowska as a filmmaker who runs into an old lover on Fårö that she broke up with long ago and had children with someone else, but then finds the sparks flying between them again. Where does life end and art begin? Of course there are echoes of Chris's relationship with Tony, hints of trouble in their intimacy, but the correspondence is not exact. There's quite a bit of humor around the way Bergman has been commodified on the island. Roth's character even goes on what they call a “Bergman safari,” a bus tour to various sites of Bergman films. This is a real thing. Hansen-Løve's sly regard for the commercialized aspect of film is endearing. Her movie, Bergman Island, is more than just a treat for cinephiles, though; it's a provocative look at the way women could be, should be portrayed in film, and preferably by women directors. It's both a challenge and a delight.
