Tá tobar saibhir béaloidis in Éirinn ina bhfuil scéalta ann atá bunaithe ar eachtraí ársa a bhí foréigeanach, tubaisteach, draíochtúil agus cealgach. D'fhás cuid mhór againn aníos ag éisteacht le scéalta faoi laochra cróga amhail Cú Chulainn, an Bhanríon Méabh, Gráinne Mhaol agus an Tuath de Danann. Ach cad é faoi na scéalta grá? Agus an bhfuil mórán den searc le mothú i mbéaloideas na hÉireann? Do Lá Fhéile Vailintín, chuaigh an saineolaí béaloidis Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh ag tochailt isteach sna seanscéalta le fáil amach cé chomh rómánsúil is atá muid mar thír. In this episode Neil Jackman and myself continue our journey down the Lingaun Valley, one of Ireland's oldest frontiers. As we move closer to the present day we explore an 800 year old church, a castle and a battlefield from the 1798 rebellion looking at how this once contested frontier fell into obscurity after thousands of year.Support the show at patreon.com/irishpodcastCheck out Neil's episodes 26 and 28 of Neil's Podcast Amplify Archaeology which cover topics related the Lingaun. The Lingaun Valley is a little known valley that forms the border between Co Kilkenny and Co Tipperary. However for thousands of years this small river formed one of the most important frontiers in Ireland. While the societies and kingdoms that fought and died over this valley are long vanished the region is littered with their remains in the tombs, religious sites, castles and battlefields.A few weeks ago I met up with archaeologist Neil Jackman, an expert in the region and we spent a morning exploring the valley. Our initial intention was to focus on the Lingaun, but our conversations took in a range of topics from what life was like 5,000 years ago, to the spiritual beliefs of our distance ancestors down to the story of battle in the 1798 rebellion!Check out Neil's episodes 26 and 28 of Neil's Podcast Amplify Archaeology which cover topics related the Lingaun. If you are planning a a trip down to explore the Lingaun Neil's website Tuath.ie has all you need. Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. In this series, we're taking a look at some of the most iconic locations in Ireland, and the stories and myths attached to them. In this episode, we take a closer look at the Sliabh Mis mountains in Kerry. There is a burial site in the hills, where the daughter of a Phero of Egypt is buried. The story goes, that a group of exiles from Egypt came across Europe and found their way to the South of Ireland. Linked in with the Milleasion myth, the group of people who fought the Tuath de Dannan and defeated them to rule Ireland. Scotia was their beloved princess and she died in the battle. You may still find traces in Glenn Scotia, very near present-day Tralee, where the Egyptian princess is believed to be buried. The same people are believed to have travelled from Ireland to Hill Hilled Alba, and the country got the name Scotland from princess Scotia… apparently. A dialogue with the poet Grace Wells, in relation to her latest book of poetry, The Church of the Love of the World (https://www.dedaluspress.com/). Grace is an award-winning eco-poet and nature writer living on the West Coast of Ireland. Nature, spirit-of-place and environmental concern are the large themes of her writing. She is an organic gardener and orchard-planter who hosts The Little Sanctuary a small retreat space for human, plant and creaturely species, and she regularly volunteers with Hometree a native woodland charity, which looks after biodiversity and encourages the reforestation of large landscape areas. We speak about wonder, grief, the sacredness of the world, the fierceness of love, and the mysteries of grasses. A few references from our dialogue:Grace refers to the name the Irish call themselves: Tuath Dé. Long before the publication of her book, Grace and I spoke about this name, and I elaborated it briefly in an essay—an elaboration Grace enjoyed very much, so here it is:---As the poet Grace Wells recently reminded me, the indigenous Irish called themselves Tuath Dé—one of the most wonderful things a human people have ever called themselves, for the word “Tuath” signifies both people and place, and “Dé” signifies the goddess. Therefore, in a gesture of intimacy, in a gesture of wisdom, love, and beauty, they called themselves “the people of the goddess” and simultaneously called themselves “the place of the goddess”. They wonderstood power and place, wonderstood rootedness in place and intimacy with the vast Cosmos. They wonderstood that Sophia abides as landscapes, as ecologies, as the sacred powers and inconceivable causes flowing as “power-and-place,” and they wonderstood that when we attune with sacredness and with living places, Sophia abides in us, through us, as us. Meanwhile, the dominant culture seems characterized by, as Underhill put it for us, those who “stand apart, judging, analysing the things which they have never truly known.”---https://dangerouswisdom.org/dw-blog/who-is-sophiaThe fuller contemplation of, “Who is Sophia?” may resonate with you.We also discuss Dōgen and his insights into, and pointings toward, the teachings of the world—all beings, including supposedly “insentient” beings—and the essence of meditation. These insights and pointings appear in Keisei Sanshoku—Velley Sounds, Mountain Forms—and Jisho Zanmai. That latter term resists translation, signifying something like Self-Experience or Self-Verifying of Well-Put-Togetherness, or, Well-Put-Togetherness of Self-Experience or Self-Verifying. It is like the meditative state of self-arising experience, not dependent on subject or object, or the self-verification of the mystery of the cosmos by means of intimacy—the mystery verifying or experiencing itself. The following essay discusses this meditative state in relation to other themes of the dialogue between philosopher and poet, including the seductions of Indo-European languages and worldviews, and the need for all of us to reindigenize:https://dangerouswisdom.org/dw-blog/hologram-ecogram-mandala-part-iv-drawing-closer-to-visionary-lovewisdomDōgen offered related lessons that we can work with as an elaboration of, and invitation into, the special meditative mind that allows us to fully receive the teachings of the world, and receive the magic and medicine of the world as well. Dōgen there refers to the properly well-put-together mind as 自受用三昧, which has to do with the well-put-togetherness of our true mind. 自...

*We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the first battle on the plains of Moy Tura. This one has no clear right and wrong, no good and no bad… but you can probably tell where Sorcha’s allegiance lies in this chat. The Tuath de Dannan had the power of Magic after all, and they were not afraid to use it. They landed with 300 boats, and burned a lot of them, and sent a fairly obvious sign to anyone who lived on this island that they were not leaving anytime soon. We talk about the differences between the two tribes, the fear that made the Fír Bolg incapable of seeing anything other than a threat, and the self righteousness that seemed to emanate from the Tuath de Dannan, forcing their hand to take rather than negotiate. We’d love to hear from you lot in case you had a different thought on the matter. Comment, below, like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. We look back on 30 years of LEADER grants and funding for development projects in rural Scotland. Anna speaks with Peter Ross, who has been involved with LEADER from its very beginning in 1991, about its grassroots partnership approach to funding, and about the hundreds of communities that have benefitted. We also hear from four different projects around Scotland that have been LEADER-funded, and ask what post-Brexit future there might be for EU-funded LEADER. This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. The first is one of the most ambiguous ones… as there are no written sources to find much about the Goddess who gave her name to the people we know as the Tuath de Dannan - the people of the Goddess Danu. Those that later became known as the “sidh”, the “good people”, and as time went by the “faeries”. More and more is forgotten about our old customs, language, and beliefs. And when you look for 'Danu' now, you might only find a line in the 12th-century book, An Leabhar Gabhala (the book of Invasions) that says "she is the Mother Goddess". If her stories were wiped out on purpose, then we have to try and stitch them back and re-knit the fabric of our lost traditions. In this episode, Sorcha relates what she does know about this mother goddess. And like the rivers and waters that took her name, all things flow from her. We pay tribute to the mother of all the Gods and Goddesses and when we praise any Goddess, and we pay homage to her memory. We will not forget their names. More information about the An Leabhar Gabhala https://www.britannica.com/topic/Tuatha-De-Danann Support for this podcast comes from our patrons.
