Mamma Mia! (promoted as Mamma Mia! The Movie) is a 2008 jukebox musical romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson, based on her book from the 1999 musical of the same name. The film is based on the songs of pop group ABBA, with additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. The film features an ensemble cast, including Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Meryl Streep, and Julie Walters. The plot follows a young bride-to-be who invites three men to her upcoming wedding, with the possibility that any of them could be her father. The film was an international co-production between Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, and was co-produced by Playtone and Littlestar Productions.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

For our month of musicals we certainly had some choices for the sub-sub genre of song movies known as “Jukebox Musicals”. These are musicals in which the music is based on pre-existing material. Maybe it's cheat mode when you're mining from something that was already popular but remember how not cool it was in that “A Knight's Tale” movie with Heath Ledger in it? Remember that shit? I guess that last Joker movie is technically a jukebox musical too, eh? Well we picked a bonafide moneymaker when it comes to jukebox musicals and you definitely gotta credit the songs because this plot is totally batshit. Maybe the most musically familiar to both hosts because they consider ABBA do be one of the most enjoyable pop groups of all time. You probably went to see this movie with your eccentric Aunt with the dangliest earrings, twice divorced, lived in Barcelona for three years and then Sarasota ever since, has a boyfriend from Morocco who is half her age. No shit we're talking about “MAMMA MIA!” From 2008 directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth & Stellan Skarsgård. Hit that zinfandel and then hit that play button. We're getting cheesy like a bachelorette party in downtown Nashville. Step into a world of impactful theatre as we unpack the latest podcast episode. We kick things off with Grenfell: in the words of survivors at the National Theatre. This powerful verbatim play draws directly from the testimonies of the residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With six years passed since the devastating event, the interviews with survivors and bereaved individuals lay bare the shocking impact of the failures that led to this national disaster. Gillian Slovo masterfully weaves these voices into a narrative that raises urgent questions about prevention and justice. Co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, the play delves into the resilience of a community fighting for justice, forming part of the National Theatre's ongoing creative engagement with North Kensington.Switching gears, we dive into the sensational world of Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors. Back by popular demand for a second year, this West End hit brings history to life in a hilariously gruesome manner. From the notorious Henries to the treacherous reign of Elizabeth, audiences are treated to legends, lies, and the nastiest bits of the torturous Tudors. Prepare for headless wives, punch-ups with the Pope, Bloody Mary, and even surviving the Spanish Armada. It's a history lesson with a twist that's sure to keep you entertained and educated.Lastly, we delve into the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, a poignant new play with music based on Annie Proulx's acclaimed short story. Under the direction of Jonathan Butterell, the production stars Broadway and silver screen names Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, both making their West End debuts. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of 1963 Wyoming, where Ennis and Jack's lives are forever altered by their time working on Brokeback Mountain. Dan Gillespie Sells' emotionally charged Country and Western songs beautifully underscore this tale of forbidden love and its heartrending consequences over two decades. The production also features the remarkable Eddi Reader and her onstage Country and Western band, adding an additional layer of musical depth.Get ready to immerse yourself in these thought-provoking and captivating theatrical experiences in the latest episode.

Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

MAMMA MIA COMPOSER: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus LYRICIST: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus BOOK: Catherine Johnson DIRECTOR: Phyllida Lloyd CHOREOGRAPHER: Anthony Van Laast PRINCIPLE CAST: Judy Kaye (Rosie), Karen Mason (Tanya), Louise Pitre (Donna) OPENING DATE: Oct 18, 2001 CLOSING DATE: Sep 12, 2015 PERFORMANCES: 5,758 SYNOPSIS: Sophie is about to be married and wants her father at the wedding except she doesn't know who that might be. Limiting it to three men that her mother knew intimately, she invites them all to her wedding to see if she can figure out which one is her real dad.  Using the hits of Swedish pop group ABBA to tell a fictional story, Mamma Mia! was heralded as Broadway's first mega-hit jukebox musical. After the rocky reception of their first Broadway endeavor, Chess, band members Benny Andersson and Björn Alvaeus gave complete freedom to book writer Catherine Johnson, believing the plot of the musical was the key to its success, not the music. Upon opening, though the show was mocked by critics and ultimately overlooked by awards shows, the musical was a major commercial success. Malcolm Womack explores how its financial successes encouraged producers to mine the discographies of successful artists to guarantee Broadway hits with such musicals as All Shook Up, Lennon, Come Fly Away, and Movin' Out.  Malcolm Womack is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the Penn State School of Theatre. He has been published in the academic journals Film & Theatre and the Journal of Popular Culture, and has contributed several entries to the African American National Biography. Malcolm has written about Mamma Mia! previously twice, providing an article for the journal Studies in Musical Theatre and a chapter for the edited collection Mamma Mia! The Movie: Exploring a Cultural Phenomenon. He received his doctorate from the University of Washington with a dissertation on Harlem's Cotton Club. Phyllida Lloyd's latest offering is Herself. Written by and starring Clare Dunne, Herself tells the story of Sandra - a struggling single mum who decides to build her own home when the housing authority refuses to offer her one. In doing so, she rediscovers herself with the help of a kindly community, only for her abusive ex-husband to return to haunt her ... Have you been to the theatre lately?  Perhaps you've attended a performance at the National Theatre in London, or watched a broadcast of one at your local cinema.  If so, you'll know that they do some amazing things at these live productions - performers float or even ”fly”, shows have live birds flying, and they even set things on fire.  How do these productions do these things within the confines of a theatre or arts centre, and how do they balance risk while maintaining the artistic integrity of the production? Enter, stage right, my guest on today's episode, Ms. Anna Glover.  Anna leads the Safety Risk and Fire Management team at the world renowned National Theatre here in London.  As you will soon find out, Anna does NOT do Health and Safety risk.  Rather, she and her team are a core part of these internationally acclaimed shows – full stop. The work she does embodies what great risk management is all about – taking risk with intelligence and confidence – and achieving great things in the process. We obviously cover this fascinating line of work in the episode – including her work with top directors, choreographers, designers, and actors, and on some amazing shows.  But, there is much more to Anna than this.  We have a great conversation around how Anna got into this line of work.  This is a wonderful example of how to find your path – or more precisely, how to let it find you. We move on to have a great discussion about Anna's philosophy on risk, fear, and many other things.  We also cover: •What she learned from working with Juliette Binoche •Her time in North Wales from studying to running an outdoor pursuits on a military base •Her “run in” with Sir Ranulph Fiennes •Martial arts – Anna is a second dan in the Korean art of hapkido •Finding your path •And much, much more This is an amazing episode and I am sure you will enjoy it!   Show notes: Anna Glover's website - http://annagloverconsulting.com/  On Twitter: https://twitter.com/annajglover  On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annagloverconsulting/  Some people Anna has worked with: •Phyllida Lloyd, CBE is a British director, best known for her work in theatre and as the director of Mamma Mia! and The Iron Lady - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllida_Lloyd •Paule Constable is a British lighting designer who won the 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2013 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Lighting Design. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had treasure in it. I realise now that I must give all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you. __________________ Did you like this episode?
