Singer-songwriter Wallis Bird takes Dearbhail through her life in five songs, from the frenetic energy of The Prodigy to the blood harmonies of The Roches.

It's hard to believe the last time Wallis Bird was on the podcast was nearly five years ago in 2019. Since then, the Berlin-based musician has released two more albums, the latest of which, Visions of Venus, was released last month. It's a creative collaboration with the German classical quintet Spark, and together they are showcasing 1000 years of female composers from Clara Schumann to Kate Bush, Enya to Hildegard von Bingen. In this wide-ranging conversation with Róisín Ingle, Bird talks about the women at the centre of this ambitious album and what their music means to her. She also shares the details of her ongoing renovation project, turning a derelict farmhouse in rural Germany into a house for herself and five others, and she talks about the grief and shock at losing her best friend suddenly last December. In just a few short decades, Germany has transformed into an epicenter of the arts. Whether it's painting, writing, or music, artists from all over the world know that Germany is a place where your creativity can flourish. That reputation has led many to this European country, not just to create art, but also to appreciate it in a more tangible way. It's also become a place where people can build a new life and start again; which is something we beautifully explore across this episode. I've been to Germany a few times throughout my life and crafting this episode made me appreciate the country in a new way. My favorite thing that I learned was that to Germans: the only rule of creativity is for artists to challenge themselves and the audience. Joining me today are three artists who symbolize the eclectic creativity that Germany fosters. I'm joined by the unbelievably talented Wallis Bird (3:45), Milky Chance (45:40), and Meagre Martin (1:23:12). Also, next week I'll be dropping a radio broadcast that goes along with this episode. The playlist for that will be full of incredible German artists (along with other artists who call Germany home). That radio broadcast will be dropping on September 12th and you'll find that only on Spotify. RIP to Kieran (aka Profound Beats). The track you're hearing in the intro is his tune Twilight in Taipei.
Pack your sunglasses – we're going on an adventure. Travel is a major theme this week in honour of our special guest co-host Caoi de Barra. You will of course know Caoi as one-third of the acclaimed Wyvern Lingo. With that project currently on hiatus, Caoi has been exceedingly busy, both with her own solo work – new single 'Treehouse' is out now – and as a touring drummer with the great Wallis Bird, and rising Canadian artist Allison Russell. Based in Berlin these days, Caoi has returned home for her 'Scooter Tour of Ireland' – the second such endeavour in travelling around Ireland on a trusty scooter from gig to gig, armed with just as many instruments as she can carry. Tickets and dates for the tour are available here.On this episode, Caoi takes us through all of the above, before we tackle our favourite songs about or inspired by travelling from place to place. In the main episode last week, our guest was writer and broadcaster, Brendan Courtney.Go back and have a listen if you missed it and also to all of our past guests this season - James Kavanagh, Wallis Bird, Cassie Delaney and Darren Kennedy to name but a few. In this minisode however, we chat about friendship, why Brian feels some public figures don't come out and how much we love Brendan. Enjoy!
In this minisode, Brian and Katherine reflect on their chat with Wallis Bird and how her authenticity is inspiring. Oh, and they also discuss sex clubs.
Wallis Bird latest album Hands, was released earlier this year and she is currently on tour around Ireland and heading to the U.S.A in 2023. Luckily for us, she took time out of her very busy schedule to talk to Brian and Katherine about her gay icons, inspo and anthems.
Spitzen Frau, super Folge! https://instagram.com/wallisbirdofficial?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Wallis Bird is one of my favourite artists and perhaps my favourite all-time performer. Originally from Wexford Ireland, Wallis has been based in Berlin Germany for over a decade. She has 7 albums to her name including her latest called Hands, which is in many ways is a celebration of uniqueness and difference. The origin story goes back to when Wallis was 18 months old 5 of her fingers were severed in a lawnmower accident. 4 were sown back on meaning she ended up losing one and from then on was forced to do things differently to many people, including how she learned to play the guitar. And for anyone that has seen her play, she truly is a force of nature.

Thrilled to welcome one of Ireland's current great Artists, Wallis Bird. Wallis has released six albums since 2007, for which she's won two Meteor Awards, Ireland's annual music prize – mostly recently for Best Female Artist – and a prestigious 2017 German ‘Music Autoren Preis' (Music Author Prize), not to mention two further nominations for the Choice Music Prize, Ireland's equivalent to Britain's Mercury Prize. In addition, she's racked up over a thousand shows during the past decade, earning a reputation worldwide for her legendarily passionate, energetic and good-humoured concerts. Wallis has also previously found a champion in American artists Amanda Palmer, and the Irish Times once noted that Bird's irrepressible trademark energy on stage could “kickstart an entire economy”. Her latest album, HANDS sees Bird turning the spotlight onto herself, raising issues that are sometimes hard to face. Bird confronts themes of trust, alcohol abuse, stagnation, self-censorship and self-improvement. Each of them, however, is delivered by a voice uncommonly blessed with joy, ingenuity, and empathy. Enjoy the epic conversation that touches on topics including energy and health on the road, the drive to perform and deliver, positive reinforcement, marriage equality and more.

Habt ihr schon mal was vom Klon Centaur gehört? Super Folge, super Typ! https://instagram.com/muffpotterofficial?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

We had the pleasure of interviewing Wallis Bird over Zoom video! Irish-born, Wallis Bird is thrilled to share “The Power of a Word” the newest song to be released off her forthcoming album HANDS, due out May 27 via Mount Silver Records / Soundly Music. “Power of the Word” follows the release of “What's Wrong with Changing” and “Pretty Lies.” Wallis tapped the famed Theodora Byrne Ensemble to create an incredibly powerful music video for her song “What's Wrong With Changing. The Theodora Byrne Ensemble is an Irish contemporary mixed-voice choir comprised of a collective of over 50 singers from various musical backgrounds HANDS finds BIRD turning the spotlight onto herself, raising issues that are sometimes far harder to confront, only to emerge optimistic and whole. Among these are issues of trust, alcohol abuse, stagnation, self-censorship, and self-improvement, some addressed through personal recollections of crucial moments accumulated over the last two years. Each, however, is delivered by a voice uncommonly blessed with joy, ingenuity, and empathy. The front cover of the new album features a black and white photograph of a hand. A cursory look might not reveal anything unusual, but it only takes a moment to recognize it's no ordinary hand. In the shadows, there's a stump where the little finger should be, and something seems off about the other digits too. Some will understand its significance: they'll have seen it strumming an upside-down, right-handed guitar, picking in unorthodox style, forming unconventional chords. The hand, you see, is WALLIS BIRD's, and it's there because, having spent much of her life trying to exist despite its restrictions, she's reached a point where she recognizes that, in many ways, it's always been vital to her lived reality. With this has come a realization of “who I am, what I am, and what I don't want.” HANDS documents her subsequent process of change, and its consequences, with typically distinctive style, making it – hands down, naturally – one of the most honest albums you'll hear at a time when honesty is at a premium. An artist who has leant her voice to many causes, a feminist icon , and an artist who didn’t let a horrible accident as a baby stop her from playing her guitar – upside down. This is episode 32 of Caffe Lena : 60 Years of Song. Thanks to Sarah at the Caffe for creating the list of songs and artists for the feature. In addition to music, Ani DiFranco has been an activist for countless causes. From the earliest days of her career, she has lent her voice to benefit concerts and albums. As a feminist icon, she has inspired women artists and entrepreneurs for over two decades. Wallis Bird severely damaged one hand in a freak accident with a lawnmower as a baby. That didn’t stop her from picking up a guitar as a child and playing it upside down! Today, she is a veritable virtuoso, has won several prestigious awards, and has headlined over 800 shows in the past ten years. Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song, a production of WEXT Radio.

APARDE on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/apardeofficial - SoundCloud: @aparde HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass - Spotify: spoti.fi/2KipBo7 3 QUESTIONS to APARDE: Q: Going into your mix shows some special roots from different genres. What do these tracks mean to you now? A: Each of this tracks had a great impact to me and is an all time favourite of mine. Like the first track Deftones - "Drive" I was listening to at the age of 16. I usesd the acoustic version because it fits better into the mix. I remember after I had listen to Aphex Twin - "Vordhosbn" and Extrawelt - "8000" my stylistic in electronic music has found a kind of direction. Q: How would you describe your development as an electronic artists, from the roots until today? A: In the first years of producing my music was very experimental. I produced in different genres but I was always more driven by the electronic stylistic. Now my music is more conceptional and more specific. And of course, I'm allowed to play my music in front of many people and being a part of a great community at Ki Records. Q: You recently released your album "Hands Rest" on your homebase label Ki Records. Whats the story behind and which interesting projects are coming next? A: The album is a summary of 2018 wich was a very difficult time for me. The title track is about to stop all activities for some time to regenerate. Its also about continue doing what you want to do. I'm very looking forward to the release of the remixes of my new Album „Hands Rest“ – a remix from Lusine for example! I also worked on a remix for Vimala and Wallis Bird, which will come out soon.
