With Glenallachie's new peated line, Meikle Toir, making buzz in the whisky world; some have it in the same sentence as the famed Octomore. We compare Meikle Toir Turbo to Octomore 6.3 Islay Barley. How is it similar, how is it different, and can it be held in the same regard? The Whisky Rant Podcast Ep 94.
On this episode we dive into the world of Bruichladdich's Octomore, the super heavily peated islay single malt scotch, while discussing going full Doubtfire, our first Octomore, slaps in the face, peat and parts per million, mouth noises, where the price point matches the experience, no Scotch gatekeeping, joining Marvel at bit of a low point, MOSTLY SPOILER FREE - Deadpool and Wolverine, allowing the viewer to not take it seriously, the right movie for right now, letting Deadpool be Deadpool, definitely not everyone's movie, Deadpool at Avenger's Campus, Disney embracing it all, our review- high recommendation with a warning for content. Anyone can blend one whisky, but to blend a whisky with long-term consistency between batches takes a true talent. This week, we'll share an informal blending session with Widow Jane head distiller and blender Sierra Jevremov on WhiskyCast In-Depth, along with tasting notes for Widow Jane's latest release, The Vaults 15-year-old Bourbon. In the news, Kentucky is getting a massive new distillery project, while we were on hand as The Hearach single malt from Isle of Harris Distillery made its U.S. debut in New York City Thursday night. We'll have tasting notes for that one, too, along with the new Glenglassaugh 12-year-old and Bruichladdich's Octomore 14.3 single malts.

Some of the world's great whiskies come out of Bruichladdich, including Classic Laddie (unpeated), Port Charlotte (peated), and Octomore (heaviest peat in the world). And the distillery was on the forefront of transparency in its marketing. But in 2001, the distillery was in mothballs and the future was uncertain. Hear the story of how this great distillery made its way into the hearts of scotch lovers across the planet, as I speak with a man who was a part of that great evolution - Allan Logan. Plus, we'll talk about and taste the latest Octomore series! #ad

Blah Blah Blah, this episode is all about special edition peated scotches. I hate typing out descriptions for episodes, ah we have a new Ardbeg too and...... A laphroaig cairdeas from 2015, also theres Octomore.
Underpinned with a delicate balance of smoke and sweet vanilla from the ex-American oak casks, this single malt has spent just 5 years in contact with fresh first fill wood. The presence of peat on the palate is huge, and yet is incredibly balanced with clean fruit and floral notes. Distilled in 2014 from the 2013 harvest of 100% Scottish barley then filled into active ex-American oak, this high provenance, high peat single malt is a fitting embodiment of how quality ingredients demand less time to reach maturity. About our gear: https://thecatholicmanshow.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/in-tune-with-the-world.jpg ()In this stimulating and still-timely study, Josef Pieper takes up a theme of paramount importance to his thinking – that festivals belong by rights among the great topics of philosophical discussion. As he develops his theory of festivity, the modern age comes under close and painful scrutiny. It is obvious that we no longer know what festivity is, namely, the celebration of existence under various symbols Pieper exposes the pseudo-festivals, in their harmless and their sinister forms: traditional feasts contaminated by commercialism; artificial holidays created in the interest of merchandisers; holidays by coercion, decreed by dictators the world over; festivals as military demonstrations; holidays empty of significance. And lastly we are given the apocalyptic vision of a nihilistic world which would seek its release not in festivities but in destruction. Formulated with Pieper's customary clarity and elegance, enhanced by brilliantly chosen quotations, this is an illuminating contribution to the understanding of traditional and contemporary experience. About the Topic: - Festivals can only arise from a working day (fast before the feast). - It has to be leisurely - a realm of activity that is meaningful in itself. - Ingredients of a festival: - Play or leisurely - Contemplation (“the simple intuition of reason. The mind's eye resting on whatever manifests itself.”) - Phenomenon of wealth (Existential richness - aka abundance) - Affirmation - (Pieper says affirmation is the substance of festivity.) Festivals are impossible to the “naysayers”. The more money he has, and above all Support this podcast

In this next installment of the Cask Effect podcast, the Brothers explore two different releases from Bruichladdich's Octomore line - the 6.1 and the 10.4. We take these two beautiful expressions and put them up against each other to explore the different approaches in each series as well as how they are complimented by a very palatable scotch-aged cigar, the Glen from Ted's Cigars. We discussed our favorite finds, gave some ideas for future episodes, and explained the beauty and adrenaline of a good whiskey hunt we had gone on recently. Shoutout to Tarak at Elixir Spirits, Brinkmann's Wine and Spirits, Midtown Corkdorks of Nashville, Liquor Planet, Best Cellars, and Discount Liquors of Pulaski for helping us find these beautiful works of art to enjoy. Check out more information about the Octomore line on Bruichladdich's website at the link below: https://www.bruichladdich.com/octomore-super-heavily-peated-whisky-range/ For our jazz-inclined listeners, can you guess the jazz standard that's being used as the background music? Steve can't leave it alone that Marijn didn't like the Octomore 9.1 from EP42 so he brings in Sven, one of the Office365Distilled listeners, to show Marijn that this is a pleasant whisky and maybe Marijn is wrong. Although Sven does say that “wow this is like a donkey kicking you where it hurts”.Starting with the Whisky brings the boys to reminisce about Jack and the special Frank Sinatra Edition the boys tasted in Orlando and then started on Ignite 2020 and the forthcoming conference due in September where some great sessions are planned and the virtual Red Party from Las Vegas is (virtually) happening.Marijn comes up with a better name… maybe… for Cortex and discussions ensue about the way Microsoft products are names and how the name describes what the product does… or not. Word is a great name describing what it does, and Forms took no imagination and then we wondered who chose Sway!!!The number of versions is explored, and the boys consider why the number 512 is not possible for a minor version… and do you know how many major versions can be created and that now you can't leave it blank… it is true that things change in SPO.And Teams… how is that MS Teams describes the functionality delivered and Jeff is asked to consider ‘frontpage' as an alternative answer… then a second service announcement is described with some issues around blocking connectors… sent to Microsoft engineering for resolution…A discussion ensues about Power Automate and its connection to Dynamics another names that is discussed before Power Apps gets a thumbs up on the names front.Visio takes some punishment until the boys work out that it might be “Visual Input Output” a real nerd name for a product and they work out that naming things might not be as simple as you might think… especially if you are too chilled… But Windows has some crap associated with ‘Windows of opportunity' and floppy disks drag them both into the world of pixelated screens…
Another comparison episode, but I am a wee bit more prepared for this one. The Octomore Masterclass 8.2 (167ppm @ 58.4) vs. the Octomore 10.1 (107ppm @ 59.8). The brain child of Jim McEwan and Mark Reynier, Octomore rounded out the triple threat from Bruichladdich. Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore would give the distillery a wide reach in single malt expressions. Octomore being the HEAVILY peated offerings, would ignite a cult following of legendary status. Don't let the PPM's scare you. I was afraid and now I believe. The 8.2 is a fruity dessert of complex flavors with a delightful twist of smoke within, likely a result of the wine casks used in the maturation. The 10.1 is a delightful blend of bourbon notes and classic Bruichladdich, sweet vanilla caramel with a smokey oak giving way to a delectable dark chocolate, toffee salty seaweed. Both bottles are high proof, yet easy to drink. I am now a believer.
Set out to have a peat tasting and forgot I had a non-peated sample from Bruichladdich as well so this episode became a tasting of 3 expressions. The Bruichladdich Scottish Barley (0ppm), the Port Charlotte 10 year heavily peated (40ppm), and finally the Octomore 8.2 Masterclass (167ppm). Very much an unrehearsed episode, this was one of discovery as I haven't had Bruichladdich in quite some time. All were delicious but the Octomore was exceptional!

In Part I of this in-depth interview and Scotch tasting with Adam Safir of the DC Islay Scotch society, some of the topics we discuss include: How Adam fell in love with Scotch, and what drove him to really dive deep into this particular region. All about whisky societies, including how to find a group to join in your area. How Scotch whiskies produced on Islay traditionally differ in style from those made in other famous regions like the Highlands, or Speyside, for example. Some important definitions for terms like “malting” and “peat,” and an examination of the role that terroir plays in peated malts. How to think about technical terms like Phenol Parts per Million (or PPM) A tasting of several impressive Islay Scotch expressions, And much, much more.
Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte single malt lies in between the distillery's namesake unpeated whiskies and its Octomore heavily peated malts, and Bruichladdich CEO Douglas Taylor admits the range has suffered from "middle child syndrome" in recent years. As part of Bruichladdich's open day today during the annual Islay Festival of Malt & Music, Port Charlotte is getting some much-needed attention. There's a new Port Charlotte 10-year-old that will be available worldwide, a new 2011 Islay Barley bottling, and an end to "hand-me-down" bottles and packaging. On WhiskyCast In-Depth, we'll talk with Douglas Taylor about the upgrade, along with growing concerns on Islay about the Scotch Whisky industry's impact on the island. In the news, another deadline is approaching in the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and the European Union, while Sazerac's plans for a new distillery in Tennessee have gotten the green light. We'll also have tasting notes for a couple of whiskies that take spice - and the score for one - to a new level.
Lindores Abbey has a unique place in Scottish history. In 1494, the abbey's Friar John Cor was responsible for the oldest known written reference to whisky distilling in Scotland when the Exchequer Roll listed him as receiving "8 bolls of malt" to make aqua vitae for the King. 523 years later, whisky distilling is returning to Lindores Abbey, and we'll take a look at the past, present, and future of Lindores Abbey's place in whisky history with Drew McKenzie Smith. His family has owned the farm in Fife where the abbey's ruins survive to this day, and he's the founder of the new Lindores Abbey Distillery. In the news, contract talks will resume this week between Chivas Brothers and its workers in Dumbarton, Scotland, and the union's plans for strikes this week have been called off. Blended Scotch sales may be poised for a comeback, and Bruichladdich is turning the peat volume up to 11 with one of its new Octomore single malts. We'll also have tasting notes for four cask-strength whoppers and a first - a web site that puts you on hold.
@whiskyfest Here is a quick shot episode on our coverage for WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 WhiskyFest Chicago 2017 @WhiskyFest This is a multiple city festival that has been around for 20 years. Several of our hosts have attended over the years, but this our first review and coverage. It’s well organized. Easy crowd control, easy in/out, good info before and during the event. Great venue. Lots of things you would expect that after such a long time producing such an event. One major distinction in this event are the people. There were lots of master distillers there and some we don’t see out and about that often. Some notables Jimmy and Eddie Russell, Julian Van Winkle, Denny Potter, Paul Hletko, and Brendan Coyle. So if you are into pressing the flesh with the producers, this is a great event to catch them. We spotted several distillers pouring, snapping photos, and we even got in on some of the fan boy crush. The other people were the attendees with not just a massive crowd but such diverse whiskey fans. There were several whiskey clubs. Fans of bourbon, scotch, Japanese whisky, and plenty of newbies. We spent quite a bit of time just taking to the crowd and everyone was having a great time. There was not even a hint of complaints in these conversations. We still shake our head at the door rush to get some of the entire Old Rip Van Winkle lineup including the coveted Pappy 23. We walked calmly to the Beam booth and grabbed Bookers Rye. The VIP pours were great quality and there was time to get most of them in the 1 hour before the general admission. One of the few times we can say the VIP upgrade is worth it. Lots of old, rare, and unicorn blood during the VIP hour. We rarely see an event with the entire Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, Pappy, Hibiki 21, Macallan Edition No. 1 ,and Laphroaig 25 2013. That is a really small list of a room of extraordinary juice flowing. Even the non-VIP offerings were extensive with most of the global spirits companies bringing large portions of their product lines. We even tasted some things that we have never seen. Some here are some products that caught our attention: Hibiki 21 – wow, what a buttery decadent whisky. This is worth every penny and a major best buy. Please bury me in one of these bottles so I can enjoy eternal bliss. Redbreast 21 – we have not covered much Irish whisky on the show yet, and I was already a Redbreast fan, but this moved to a whole new level. Wood, honey, citrus, and quite complex. Aberlour 18 – it’s been awhile and I’ve been working on a couple batches of A’bundah. Don’t forget how good this is. It’s one of the flavor profiles that captured my heart for Scotch and continues to deliver. Some new to us products that were impressive – Connemara Cask, Kelbeggan 18, Few Spirits Flaming Lips Rye, Octomore 7. Brendan from High West had that look of great anticipation all over him of something very cool on the horizon. He reported nice things post acquisition by Constellation, but it was that other thing on his mind that was intriguing. The food was outstanding, although there is not really enough time or room to enjoy it. Our SS&S Fest Report Card Ratings 1-5 with 5 being the best Venue – 5 Whisk(e)y – 5 Food – 5 Audience – 5 Overall – 5 Would we come back – Yes Tips for next year: Grab something to eat and hydrate well before the event, it’s a bit of a sprint. Take the time to meet a fellow whiskey fan while you are in the short lines. Stay at the hotel venue the night of the event. Coat check the bag they give you.
Adam Hannett has a tough job, though he wouldn't trade places with anyone for the world! He took over for the legendary Jim McEwan as head distiller at Bruichladdich following Jim's retirement last summer, and has just released his first bottling: Octomore 7.4 Virgin Oak. We'll talk with Adam about the future at Bruichladdich, what it's like to have your mentor living right next door to the distillery, and Bruichladdich's plans to make its recipes for the "Classic Laddie" more transparent starting next month. In the news, the Scotch Whisky Association has warned Bruichladdich to run those plans by UK regulators first, while nearby Lagavulin has unveiled its 200th anniversary bottling with a nod to the distant past. Teeling Whiskey is sending 12 different single barrel Irish whiskies to the US in time for St. Patrick's Day, Scotland's northernmost mainland distillery is releasing its first whisky, and we now know the new name for the restored Old Taylor Distillery in Kentucky.

Lots to talk about this week, with news from all over the world! Bruichladdich's Jim McEwan joins us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to talk about the world's peatiest whisky ever -- his Octomore 6.3 with a phenol level of 258ppm! A double feature this time around: William Wemyss shares his family's Scottish heritage with a line of single cask and blended malts named to describe what the whiskies inside taste like. We'll also start a two-part series looking at the growth of microdistillers in the U.S., featuring Jess Graber of Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, Jay Harman of The Notch, and Brian Ellison of Death's Door Spirits. In the news, Bruichladdich unleashes the Octomore peat monster and the X4 quadruple-distilled spirit on the world.
