Video recording of this episode is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OcxwmDuUeU&ab_channel=UCD-UniversityCollegeDublin Henry Glassie is College Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, and has published widely in the fields of material culture and vernacular architecture. His contribution to the discipline of Irish Folklore and Ethnology has been exceptional. Having lived in Ballymenone, Co. Fermanagh, for almost a decade in the 1970s, Professor Glassie published a number of studies inspired by the community there, including All Silver and No Brass (1975), Passing the Time in Ballymenone (1982) and The Stars of Ballymenone (2006). These books are landmark works which have become classic texts for students of Folklore in Ireland and abroad, along with many other items on Professor Glassie's long list of publications. Henry has rendered invaluable service to our understanding of Irish popular tradition and vernacular culture, and he can truly be described as a towering figure in the study of Irish Folklore for more than half a century. Even in his retirement, he remains a staunch and committed friend to Ireland and to the people he worked with while carrying out fieldwork here. Henry has had a long and extremely positive relationship with UCD since the establishment of the Department of Irish Folklore in the university in the early 1970s. With the approach of the fiftieth anniversary of his first major publication on Irish Folklore, All Silver and No Brass, it was deemed especially appropriate for the University to take the opportunity to honour Professor Glassie, and on Wednesday 21 May 2025, Henry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from UCD, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the growing area of Irish Studies in general, and to the field of Irish Folklore and Ethnology in particular. It was a great honour and personal privilege for me to sit and 'Pass the Time' with Henry, and over the course of ninety minutes we explored his background, interests, intellectual life, and experiences of field work, as well as delving into the topics of place, creativity, art, meaning, identity, belonging and despair; invoking old friends such as Fred B. Kniffen, E. Estyn Evans, Michael J. Murphy, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Ellen Cutler, Tommy Love, Michael Boyle, Peter Flanagan, and Hugh Nolan as we trooped our way homewards. My thanks to all my colleagues at the NFC, as well as Susan Lysaght, Sandra Collins, Evelyn Flanagan, Andrew Fogarty, Veronica Aguilar Olmos, Dominic Martella for making this episode possible, and - most especially - to Henry and Pravina for their generosity, openness and kindness.

Dan's  first of two tales covers the lore and supposed paranormal encounters associated with Dublin, Ireland's St. Michan's Church and the dead bodies that reside in the crypts beneath it.  Then, we'll venture over Lake Pleasant, New York, and learn about some rumored murders associated with one of the town's founding fathers and the hauntings associated with those deaths. Lynze offers us three different tales this week. Her first is sad and sweet, a tale of a life taken to soon but possibly still here. Then, how strange would it be if strangers outside of your apartment could see a ghost in your home but you couldn't? Lastly, does watching horror flicks at home make you, your family and your personal space more susceptible to spirits moving in with you? What a crazy idea! Scared To Death Merch:Celebrate 300 episodes of Scared to Death with the killer new '300 Rituals' collection. The old Irish tradition of using enormous stones in the landscape, sometimes known as testing stones, as a feat of strength has been all but lost for generations. Such stones were lifted to honour the dead at funerals, as a rite of passage to adulthood, as a test of suitability for particular jobs or roles, and for many other purposes. There are many such stones still lying in the Irish landscape, the purpose forgotten, until recently. Thanks to the diligent research and investigation of the guest on this episode of The Folklore Podcast, David Keohan, these stones are gradually being rediscovered, mapped, and lifted once again. In this episode, we learn about the Irish traditions behind the Lifting Stones, and David's efforts to rediscover them. You can follow David on his Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/_indiana_stones_If you enjoy this episode, please consider subscribing to our Patreon page. The Clare Oral History Podcast

Supernatural experiences abound in Irish Folklore.  The veil is thin between the concrete world and the other dimensions especially in the dark part of the year.  The stories are told by Teresa Flynn from Mountshannon, Paddy Murphy, Joe Jack Sexton and Martin Walsh from Mullagh, John Hastings from Quin, Bridie Mahony from Moughna, Peggy Hogan from Feakle, and Sean Crowe from Broadford.GLOSSARY OF TERMSBanshee or 'Bean sí' a female spirit in Irish and other folklores whose appearance or wailing warns of impending death'Cóiste bodhar' or Death Coach: a harbinger of death.'Habit': Attire for dead person, similar to monk's habit.  Sold in local shops.  A plenary indulgence (Catholic faith) was gained if the hand of the dying person was put through the sleeve of the habit before they died.'Ragairne' / 'going on ragairne': night visiting to neighbours' houses'Piseogs': A form of folk magic, always malevolent. Performed to cause misfortune to someone, such as burying eggs or an animal carcass on someone's land. 'Making a churn': making butter'Scillanes': seed potatoes'Sock of the plough': metal part of a plough'Bittling': a way of washing clothes in the river by slapping them on a wooden block (a bittle). This sound was offered as an explanation for the handclap sometimes heard when the Banshee appeared.Series 2 of The Clare Oral History Podcast is supported by The Ireland FundsFollow Cuimhneamh an Chláir on Instagram, Facebook, X or LinkedIn

In this episode, we continue our look at Irish creatures from folklore! The Kelpie is a traditional water horse, the most famous of which is Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland. But Ireland has its fair share of lake monsters, with the kelpie being the most well-known. The Selkie is another lake monster, but more of a seal that can shapeshift into human form. The Dullahan is more of a specter, a supernatural entity, a headless horseman (or coachman) of Irish mythology. Finally we discuss the far darrig, a creature similar to a leprechaun, but wearing all red and seemingly even more mischievous. #cryptozoology #folklore #kelpie #selkie #dullahandylan Links! As we speak I'm getting ready to head to India and Vietnam for work so this episode is going to be short, sweet and punchy. I'm really excited about the guests that'll be featuring on the podcast whilst I'm away for two weeks. As you all know I am running a retreat in August later this year in Bali that's sold out and before I hold space and facilitate, I am also attending a retreat in India! I've never been before so a whole new adventure awaits. The lead up to it has been interesting, lots happening and I'm sure lots to transpire and share after. Today is February 29th as I record this episode and it's a leap year that comes every 4 years. The last time we had a leap year was amongst the huge global change and shift in consciousness that was in February 29th 2020. Given leap years don't happen all too often, this date I feel energetically holds space to reflect. What was life like for you 4 years ago around this time? A leap year is about balance A leap year is made to account for lost time, giving us an additional calendar day every four years. In this is also an opportunity to get back into balance and harmony especially given the last few weeks have been energetically intense. Where do you need more balance and harmony in your life right now? Numerology of the leap year in 2024 Every leap year holds the master energy of 11 which I've spoken about in a couple of energy updates already this year but to remind you its the number of the master architect, it's about the vision, the plan and intuition. The numerology of the leap year 2+9+2+2+0+2+4 = 21 = 2 + 1 = 3. The number 3 in numerology is linked to Jupiter which is all about abundance and being an 8 year of course, the energy is strong for abundance. It could be a time to look at your finances, to work on your money mindset and/or manifest money. There's also that saying that goes good things come in 3… Astrologically Mercury is harmoniously dancing with Jupiter at the moment so despite there being some thick and heavy karmic energy in the air, this portal represents optimism, hope and joy. A leap year is about faith A leap can also be embodied by well the leap of faith, the fool tarot card, symbolising a jump into the unknown, anything is possible! A leap of faith is also akin to a quantum jump, timelines can shift, massive growths, a surge in your transformation and changes can happen all in a moment. There's a window for breakthroughs to occur. There's a window for spiritual awakenings to happen. With all portals yes it's most potent on the day of but the portal opens for a few days aside. As with any portal pay attention to signs and synchronicities that pop up, the cosmic coincidences that are at play.Today is February 29th as I record this episode and it's a leap year that comes every 4 years. The last time we had a leap year was amongst the huge global change and shift in consciousness that was in February 29th 2020. Given leap years don't happen all too often, this date I feel energetically holds space to reflect. What was life like for you 4 years ago around this time? A leap year breaks traditions and is about being bold In ancient Irish Folklore it was said that Saint Brigid, like the Goddess Brigid of light made a deal with Saint Patrick where back in the day a deal was struck where women could propose to men to balan...

TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 30 and November 6, 2023, and particularly for Halloween. MUSIC – ~18 sec – Lyrics: “Summer's over, winter's coming; summer's over, winter's coming.” That's part of “Winter is Coming,” by The Steel Wheels.  It sets the stage for an episode on the origins of Halloween in the ancient festival of Samhain, first observed centuries ago by Celtic peoples.  Celtic lands include Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and areas of England and France.  Samhain marked the end of the Celtic year on October 31, when summer had faded, winter was approaching, and—in Celtic belief—the dividing line between earth and the spirit world was thin, allowing spirits of the dead to roam.  As described by Miranda Aldhouse-Green in her 2015 book The Celtic Myths, quote, “It was at the festival of Samhain, at the edge of winter, that the world of humans was most at risk from the inhabitants of the world beyond: the boundaries were suspended and the spirits could prowl among the living, to their good or detriment depending on the character of the individual phantom,” unquote. Along with Halloween's date, many of its traditions can be traced back to Samhain practices, such as donning costumes or disguises, believed by the Celts to help them avoid being recognized by wandering spirits. When they weren't wandering the earth at Samhain, Celtic spirits and Celtic gods were believed to reside in what was known as the Otherworld.  In Celtic beliefs, watery areas were considered access points to the Otherworld.  Celtic mythology also gave special significance to swans, whose beautiful appearance on the water might have suggested connections to Celtic gods.  Here's a short version of an Irish legend about Samhain and swans; the opening and closing sounds are Tundra Swans, a North American species whose Berwick's Swan subspecies is found in Ireland and Wales. SOUNDS  - 4 sec – Tundra Swans. Oenghus was the Celtic god of love.  In the myth called “The Dream of Oenghus,” the god dreamed he saw a woman named Caer, the Celtic goddess of sleep and dreams, and he became smitten with her.  He searched far and wide for her, eventually finding her among a group of other women at a lake, and learning that every other year at Samhain the women turned into swans.  At the next Samhain, Oenghus returned to the lake and, by turning himself into a swan, was able to win Caer's heart.  The story ends with the pair of swans circling the lake three times, casting a sleep enchantment on everyone below, and flying off together.       SOUNDS  - 4 sec – Tundra Swans. I hope your Halloween has rich traditions and a bit of mystery, perhaps about waters or water creatures from worlds unknown. Thanks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the swan sounds.  Thanks also to The Steel Wheels for permission to use part of “Winter is Coming.”  We close with another musical selection, which has become a Halloween-episode tradition on this show.  Here, for about 50 seconds, is “A Little Fright Music,” composed and recorded or Virginia Water Radio by Torrin Hallett. MUSIC – ~50 sec – Instrumental. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. Join us on this week's episode as we delve into Banshee folklore. We share an introduction to the topic and then two, scary stories related to this Irish legend. Traditionally, the banshee is believed to be a supernatural being attached to certain old Irish families, serving as both a harbinger of death and a protector of those she is bound to. This entity is often seen as a female spirit or fairy, dressed in flowing white garments, with long, wild hair and glowing eyes. Legend states that the banshee's primary role is to forewarn the imminent death of a family member. Her mournful wailing and keening are said to be heard in the dead of night, just before tragedy strikes. The chilling sound is acts as a somber reminder of mortality. Despite the association with death, the banshee is not a malevolent being. In fact, she is often regarded as a guardian or protector of her designated family. The banshee's presence is seen as a sign of respect and reverence, as she mourns the passing of a loved one and guides their soul to the afterlife. Join Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEResearch LinkStory OneStory Two Thanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again on Thursday.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Yeats The Salmon of Knowledge is a mythical creature in Irish folklore associated with poetry and knowledge of deep truths. Any person who ate a bit of the fish would become wise and know the essence of all things. Which leads one to wonder: what is the nature of this wisdom? The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill suggests an answer to this question. I love this story and hope you enjoy it too.Support the showEmail Catherine at drcsvehla@mythicmojo.comPost a positive review on apple podcasts! In this special live episode, recorded at the Hay Festival, Greg Jenner is joined by Dr Gillian Kenny and comedian Seán Burke to learn about medieval Irish folklore. We're focusing on the lore and stories from Gaelic Irish culture. Gaelic culture remained the dominant set of cultural and societal beliefs on the island of Ireland well into the 17th century until it was destroyed by a succession of English invasions. But what were these beliefs and how did the Christianisation of Ireland from the 5th century onwards amalgamate pre-Christian stories into it? From fairy darts to banshees, through some unusual ways of warding off the evil eye, this is a jovial jaunt across some ancient myths and legends. Bees have been cultivated in Ireland since early times. Of value for their wax and honey, there were also believed to be blessed creatures, as Dáithí Ó hÓgáin writes: "probably because of the use of their wax to make church candles, and one medieval legend describes a swarm of bees building a little container around a lost communion wafer to protect it. They were also thought to be possessed of special wisdom, and to take an acute interest in the affairs of their owners. If a bee entered the house it was regarded as a good omen, and the bees in their hive would be told in advance of projects that the family intended to undertake in the belief that they might effect a beneficial influence. When a member of the family died, it was customary to place a black piece of cloth on the hiveso that the bees could join in the mourning". For this episode of Blúiríní I was honoured to have been joined by my friend and colleague from the National Museum of Country Life in county Mayo, and alumnus of the taught MA in Irish Folklore at UCD, Tiernan Gaffney. Tiernan is an Assistant Keeper of the Irish Folklife Collection at the National Museum of Ireland, his folklore research often explores the creation and connection of communities within shared spaces. Join us for episode 39 of Blúiriní Béaloidis as we honour those blessed, wise and industrious little ones, and talk about an upcoming National Museum of Ireland exhibition, “Murmur of Bees”which will launch in the summer of 2023.
