Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
If you've been tuning in through this past winter, you have likely heard of my big scary adventure coming up next winter - what will be my first fat bike winter ultra at the Arrowhead 135 - a 135-mile adventure through the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota in late January - it starts in International Falls and is known for it's bitter cold temperatures and deep snow - and while it's not always cold and snowy, as in this past edition (tune in to our conversation with Cate Coward in episode 114!) - but I will say - you'd better be prepared for both! One of the reasons this race is scary for me, is that I'm no fat biker - I don't yet own one, nor have I really spent any time on one - and though it's spring and every week is getting warmer and warmer as we head into summer - it's high time I start thinking about what I'm going to ride next winter! So I dialed up my mentor, Steve McGuire - and who better to talk fat bikes? Steve is not only a veteran of many winter ultras including the Arrowhead 135, Actif Epica, Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational - not only all of that - but he also leads the Design, build ride program at the University of Iowa - a cool class for both engineering and art students to who do just that - design, build then ride their own hand crafted steed. So Steve's not only been riding fat bikes for years and years - but has also been playing with the design - so if you're interested at all in your own winter fat biking, bike design or... well... Iowa Women's Basketball - then I hope you enjoy this conversation with Steve McGuire! Kate Coward's name is synonymous with winter ultras, especially on a fat bike. She's finished and won the Arrowhead 135 on bike, but also completed what is called one of the 50 hardest races on earth on both skis and foot. She's also won in her first go of the Iditarod Trail Invitational ITI350 as well as the Tuscobia 160 and Actif Epica. She recently finished fourth overall and first among the women in the warm 2024 Arrowhead 135, notable because Bike Talk with Dave regular and Mentor to Dave in his own Arrowhead attempt next year, Steve McGuire had to withdraw at mile 27. The day after the event concluded this year, both Kate and Steve hopped on a call to download this years especially challenging event. The lessons offered between the two of them are priceless to anyone who has any type of challenge ahead of them - on or off the bike! Leah Gruhn has ridden the northern Minnesota winter ultra Arrowhead 135 for more than a decade, as well as the Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational 350. And in 2017 she and her husband jumped on their bikes in Banff Canada and rode south to the U.S. Mexico border in the Tour Divide. This winter she flew back to Alaska and rolled across Knik Lake and up the Iditarod Trail for the 1000-mile journey towards Nome. 21 days later she was the first, and only female to complete the entire journey across Alaska. She was kind enough to spend some time on Bike Talk with Dave just prior to heading south to Florida for a week of warmth! I enjoyed getting to know her, and I hope you will too! So grab cup of Chain and Spoke Coffee and enjoy the show! Thanks for tuning in to todays episode -and thanks to Leah for making time before trading snow drifts for sandy beaches! Look for her on instagram and facebook, doesn't sound like she's done with these great adventures! And later this week, I've got a bonus episode for you! Leah talked about how great it feels to reach Unakaleet on the Bering Sea and the pizza joint called Peace on Earth Pizza. When I was there in 2019 I talked with Peace on Earth owner Brett Hansen - it's pretty interesting how a little pizza joint in a small village on the Bering Sea can thrive serving all the villages in Western Alaska. I'd like to thank Chain and Spoke Coffee and Bikes for supporting the show - you can order your favorite blend now at chainandspoke.com or you can just stop by the first retail location in Des Moines, Iowa! Great coffee, great bikes! Service too! If you're headed across the country on either I-80 or I-35, stop on in!And thank you for listening to Bike Talk with Dave! If you'd like to support the show, you can do so by rating, reviewing and sharing! If you'd like to support the show financially, and help it improve, you can go to BuyMeACoffee.com and throw some change my way - I'll use it to make the podcast better AND I'll send you a Bike Talk sticker! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dmable122QWe've got a busy month ahead - this weekend the Trofeo Sabato Santo circuit race in Des Moines, and at the end of the month we'll be back on gravel enjoying the beautiful hills of Northeast Iowa in the Driftless 100! There's still time to join the fun at driftlessgravel.com. Hopefully we'll see you there! And in May, stage racing is back in the Midwest at the Three Days of Des Moines or Driedaagse Des Moines. Emily and Ryan are both athletes out of South Dakota who set out to take on some of the world's toughest, fastest, and coldest races. Last August, they traveled to Europe so Emily could take on the CCC, one of the world's largest ultras and now they are in Alaska getting Ryan ready for his ultimate winter ultra test, enduring the legendary Iditarod course. In this episode we catch up with both of them- We hear about the brutal mountains of the CCC and how they affected Emily's race, how Tuscobia 160 and Arrowhead 135 were used as tools to prepare Ryan for Alaska, what their trip up north has consisted of so far, what mental and physical obstacles Ryan is preparing for, and what tips the Iditarod veterans have shared with them.
