Even if you consider yourself a runner, you probably aren't prepared for a run quite like this. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we dive into the Cascade Lakes Relay, a 216-mile race across the landscape of central Oregon that can get a little wilder and weirder than your average footrace. Similar to Oregon's famed Hood to Coast Relay, the Cascade Lakes Relay involves teams of runners who collectively tackle the length of the course over the course of two days. That means late-night shifts, spartan sleeping conditions and lots of wackiness along the way. Jamie Goldberg, politics and education editor for The Oregonian/Oregonlive, joined the podcast to talk about her recent experience running the relay. Here are some highlights from this week's show: How Goldberg survived a dusty midnight run through the mountains. Rain and snow made the summertime event a little chillier than expected. A pop-up rave and one double-decker party bus kept things lively during the race. Team culture is a major part of relay races, even if the runs are all solo. Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever found yourself frozen by the voice that whispers "you're not enough"? In this raw and revealing episode, I take you mile by mile through my 50-mile ultra trail race where everything was on the line with just 10 miles and 2 hours left to reach my goal. But this isn't just about running—it's about that universal moment we all face when our dreams collide with our deepest insecurities. Whether you're building a wellness practice, stepping into your power as a yoga teacher, or pursuing any meaningful goal, the self-limiting beliefs we encounter mirror the same ones I battled on that rugged trail. In this episode, you'll discover: The exact moment my inner critic took over at mile 40 and the unexpected technique that silenced it Three practical strategies to recognize and reframe self-doubt when it threatens your professional growth How "strategic disappointment" can become your most powerful tool for resilience How to hold space for joy, doubt, and fear of disappointment without it taking you down or missing out on the gifts of the moment The finish line isn't just a moment—it's a mindset. By the end of our journey together today, you'll have a roadmap for outrunning the voices of limitation that have kept you playing small in your wellness career. The same mental toughness that carried me through those final challenging miles can be harnessed in your teaching, your practice, and your business. For a brief window in the late 1800s, America's favorite sport was walking in circles over and over and over. The biggest sporting events in the country were “6 Day Races” – days-long tests of endurance where competitive walkers competed to see who could log the most miles. Check out our guest Matthew Algeo's book “Pedestrianism: When Watching People Walk Was America's Favorite Sport.” And if you're so inclined here is a selection of 6 Day Races that you can still compete in today: The Old Six Day, Six Days in the Dome, Across the Years (and a variation on the theme, the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race).

“People asked me if I was shocked crossing the line. To be honest, I didn't feel like the shock set in yet when I crossed the line because I thought I could run 3:48 or 3:49. I was really excited, but I don't feel like I was as shocked as other people. It was afterwards when someone told me I was number eight on the world all-time list. That's when I was like, ‘Wow.'”My guest for today's episode isGary Martin, a fan favorite here at CITIUS MAG since his high school days. Now he's a junior at the University of Virginia. Gary just delivered one of the fastest miles in NCAA history at the prestigious Millrose Games, running an incredible 3:48.82 – a performance that shattered his own school record and puts him at No. 2 on the all-time collegiate list and No. 8 on the world all-time indoor list. What makes this even more impressive is that he was the only collegiate runner in such a stacked field of pros and ran a very well-executed race surging through the field from being last at halfway to finishing 5th overall. Today we're diving into what this performance means for his season, his mindset going into that historic race, and how he's approaching the upcoming championship stretch. Plus, we talk about the evolution of his career at UVA and the rapid rise of collegiate milers pushing the 1500m and the mile to new limits.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Gary Martin |@gary.martin20 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. PIT PASS INDY – SEASON 4, EPISODE 63 – Mark Montieth, author of ‘VUCKOVICH The Man Who Wouldn't Lift' December 17, 2024 Show host Bruce Martin has a special Pit Pass Indy, featuring an exclusive interview with Mark Montieth, an author and former sportswriter at The Indianapolis Star who helped turn a manuscript that was also 70 years old into a book on one of the greatest legends in Indianapolis 500 history. The book is entitled, “VUKOVICH The Man Who Wouldn't Lift” and tells the incredible life story of the great Bill Vukovich, who won back-to-back Indianapolis 500s in 1953 and 1954 and was running away with the lead in the 1955 500-Mile Race before he was killed while leading the race in a crash on the backstretch. He was just 36 years old. Racing fans have heard the name “Bill Vukovich” but few know the story of the man. Montieth was able to take a manuscript written by Indianapolis News sportswriter Angelo Angelopolous, who died of Leukemia in 1962, into a hardcover book by Halfcourt Press in Indianapolis. The book is available at Amazon.com or by contacting Mark Montieth at markmontieth55@gmail.com. Signed copies are also available by contacting Montieth. It would make a great Christmas or holiday gift for any Indianapolis 500 or IndyCar fan. For more INDYCAR coverage, follow Bruce Martin at X, previously known as Twitter, at @BruceMartin_500

In this episode of Trail Society, join hosts Keely and Corrine as they dive into an inspiring conversation with Hannah Allgood, who secured second place at her first 100-mile race, Javalina Jundred. Hannah shares insights into her season, which included so many different races like the Chuckanut 50k, Gorge 30k, Transvulcania, and Istria 101k, detailing her preparation and the strategic choices behind each race. She discusses her journey leading up to Javelina, emphasizing the importance of running her own race, maintaining mental resilience, and her fueling plan—complete with the decision to shove gels into her bra to keep them cool. Finally, we touch on her coaching and work as a PT and how she combines them to develop trail-running specific strength programs for her athletes. Additionally, Keely and Corrine explore a new study on NCAA D1 cross country athletes, highlighting concerns about body weight, energy balance, and the often-overlooked experiences of male athletes. In today's episode, I share my experience of The Speed Project, one of the toughest, grittiest, and most disruptive races. We gathered six runners who had never worked together before to participate in an unsupported 300-mile relay race through some of the most unforgiving terrains in the country. The course was full of inclines and declines, with thousands of feet of elevation gain and loss through mountains and deserts, and we had to plot our own route with precision and speed. This was an unparalleled experience for me, and I can't wait to share some of the stories that came out of it with you all. Enjoy!
