My guest today is Cindy Tank-Murphy. Best-selling author, international speaker, and mental health advocate, Cindy Tank-Murphy offers a unique perspective on the much-needed conversation around overcoming the grief from suicide and the mental health epidemic around it. Trained in Mental Health First Aid and certified in QPR, a suicide prevention technique, Cindy believes we can eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness through awareness and open dialogue that will ultimately save lives. Cindy's life was forever changed on July 22, 2014, when her father ended his life, and she was left with a choice to make. She could allow shame, guilt, and sorrow to swallow her whole or seek better understanding through education and a new version of herself through vulnerable self-discovery. Thankfully, she chose the latter, which began a massive shift in her healing journey, one that has had a profound and lasting impact on her future and called her to be a compassionate voice regarding mental health. Her gift is her desire to help others heal by exploring their own stories and finding compassion and understanding amid the sorrows of suicide. Her personal experience, perspective, and passion for sharing her experience make her an ideal mentor and a compassionate voice for those struggling emotionally with suicide loss or dealing with someone they love battling mental illness. Living Art as Life, and Life as Art: Mid-century Artist Milton Cavagnaro and Five Generations Passing the Torch of CreativityBy: David Cavagnaro About the BookIn the late 1930s, with World War II looming, the famous German Bauhaus art school closed, and many of its teachers migrated to America, greatly influencing the course of modern art and architecture in the 1940s and 1950s. Influenced by the work of Bauhaus painters such as Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky, a young artist named Milton Cavagnaro began what would become a lifetime art career in San Francisco that spanned abstract painting, commercial design, college teaching, jewelry making, gardening and landscaping. During this journey, many famous mid-century artists, beginning their own careers, would grace his family's life as friends or visitors, including photographers Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Ernest Braun; Margaret Bourke White and Yohana Meith, the first women photographers for Life; and close associates of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Milton's history, as told here by son David Cavagnaro, became in the writing the much larger story of five generations in the family, all passing along the torch of creativity via a plethora of media. Lavishly illustrated, this journey demonstrates that the definition and expression of art can permeate all of life, if we also live life itself as art. About the AuthorDAVID CAVAGNARO is the author of six previous books and a widely published writer and photographer in the fields of natural history and horticulture. Having spent most of his life in Northern California, his former home and land in Northeast Iowa have become The Pepperfield Project, a nonprofit devoted to sustainable food gardening, seed-saving, and personal growth, body, mind, and spirit. However, the temperatures will continue their decline, with a high of 58 degrees earlier in the day falling to around 46 degrees by 2 p.m.Iowa voters in 50 counties will be voting Nov. 7 on whether their school districts or local governments can issue bonds to fund projects.General obligation bonds are a mechanism schools, cities and counties use to borrow money to fund large-scale, long-term infrastructure projects. Forty-five local government and school entities are asking voters to approve the spending.School districts make up the vast majority of the bond questions on ballots, requesting approval for a combined $1.27 billion in bond issues across 35 districts, according to data compiled by Iowans for Tax Relief. In comparison, ten cities and counties are asking for a combined $453.7 million in bond issues.Iowans for Tax Relief, which lobbies for tax reductions at the state and local levels, aggregated the bond issues on its website in an effort to educate voters about what will be on their ballot, according to Chris Hagenow, the group's president and a former Republican legislator. While the group acknowledged some projects are necessary in growing districts, it questioned the need for many of the districts in the state to borrow money for new buildings or updated athletic facilities.Hagenow said voters should look at their local bonds on a case-by-case basis. The most widespread and third-most severe outbreak on record of a disease transmitted by biting flies is plaguing Iowa deer this fall.Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, is a viral disease spread to deer by biting flies called midges or no-see-ums. The disease has been in the southeastern and northeastern United States for decades, and was first discovered in Iowa in 2012. It's often but not always fatal. It cannot infect humans. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has received 1,074 reports of suspected EHD-related deer deaths so far this year, said state deer biologist Jace Elliott. Actual mortality may be even higher considering unreported deaths.Reports are most concentrated in Southeast Iowa around Henry and Van Buren counties, which each have more than 100 reports. Clayton County in Northeast Iowa has topped 100 reports as well. Counties with the most reports typically also have larger deer populations. The vast majority of counties are seeing less than 10 reports each.EHD is seasonal, peaking in the late summer and early fall. Hard frosts kill the midges. This year's warmer fall prolonged the lives of the infectious midges and may have contributed to the outbreak, giving extra opportunities for the disease to spread. The first hard freeze is expected to hit Iowa by early next week, according to the National Weather Service Quad Cities bureau.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, May 2.Tuesday will be a bit warmer than Monday, but still breezy. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 61 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. A northwest wind will blow at 15 to 25 mph, with wind gusts as high as 35 mph. Tuesday night there will be clear skies, with a low of around 35 degrees.Next time you order items online, there's a high chance the box your goods arrive in was made in Cedar Rapids at International Paper's Cedar River Mill plant. And now International Paper is looking to invest into that plant's longevity. The plant at 4600 C St. SW — the largest 100-percent recycled paper mill in the Americas — broke ground Monday on its expansion project to generate an alternate steam supply and transition off coal-powered steam.International Paper operates 18 containerboard plants and 28 mills overall in the United States. The company creates material for fiber-based packaging products for e-commerce, processed food and beverages, fruit and vegetables, protein, distribution and durable and nondurable goods.Currently, the coal boilers at Alliant Energy's Prairie Creek Generating Station provide all of the plant's process steam. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Alliant will no longer burn coal at Prairie Creek as part of an environmental lawsuit settlement. After studying options for an alternate steam supply, International Paper officials decided the company will build and operate two natural gas-powered boilers to generate steam on-site, as well as build a water treatment plant. International Paper — among the top eight users of city water — will continue to purchase Cedar Rapids water, and purify that to generate the steamProject manager Tony Cleaves told the Gazette that without the replacement steam supply provided by this $103 million expansion, Cleves said, International Paper would have to shut down its Cedar Rapids plant. After rising for weeks, the Mississippi River reached its peak over the weekend in parts of Southwest Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa. It was cresting at midday Monday in Davenport and the neighboring cities of Bettendorf and across the river in Illinois at Rock Island and Moline. The peak was slightly lower than forecast but still high enough to test the region's flood defenses and to keep officials on guard. The rising river, caused by a surge of water from melting snowfall to the north, may set some records along the river, but the National Weather Service still said the river levels generally will remain well below past records. Forecasts call for little rain in the coming days, so once the river crests it should soon begin a decline that will last for at least two weeks. The amount of increases in property tax revenue that local governments are able to spend would be limited under legislation that is destined to become state law soon.Republican leaders in the Iowa Senate and House on Monday announced their agreement on property tax legislation. The compromise legislation includes provisions from the separate bills that the two chambers had been advancing. The compromise bill includes the Senate's proposal to combine and simplify a variety of city tax levies and to address increases in property assessments and any corresponding increases in property tax revenue to local governments. The new bill — which is an amended version of the House's bill, House File 718 — also includes the House's proposal to

Carl Voss has been an advocate for bikes and trails for fifty years - a few of the things he's left in his wake include the first mile of paved trail in central Iowa, a community bike-share program, a bike renovation and distribution program, he's worked with area municipalities to ensure that they work with each other in planning trails and bike routes so they all connect, he's promoted bike to work day and grown it to be an entire month, he started an annual bike art show…and he's finally found a seat on the Des Moines City Council! I could go on and on - Carl's advocacy and work is a lesson for us all to roll up our sleeves and get to work to… as I've heard him say for many years - put more butts on bikes….

And in 2017 she and her husband jumped on their bikes in Banff Canada and rode south to the U.S. Mexico border in the Tour Divide. This winter she flew back to Alaska and rolled across Knik Lake and up the Iditarod Trail for the 1000-mile journey towards Nome. 21 days later she was the first, and only female to complete the entire journey across Alaska. She was kind enough to spend some time on Bike Talk with Dave just prior to heading south to Florida for a week of warmth! I enjoyed getting to know her, and I hope you will too! The drivetrain hasn't seen a really significant evolution since the advent of index shifting in the 1980's. IMHO. Well, maybe the brake/shift lever combo - but really, not since then. More gears, electronic movements but the things still basically attach and work the same as the old Nuevo Records that our dads rode, mechanically speaking. So I went to the SRAM Eagle XX premier party at Mellow Johnny's in ATX with a bit of skepticism - and curiosity. Dang. It's different! OK - two jocky wheels, and the slant parallelogram are still there - but the UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) is completely different, the adjustments are basically gone, the setup is easy - and super super strong! Caite Palmer and Arlene Hunter are the hosts of "The Barnyard Language Podcast - "Real Talk About Running Farms and Raising Families".  They are both farmers in different situations.  Arlene and her husband are full-time dairy farmers in Canada with no off-farm jobs. Caite and her husband farm about 200 acres of row crops and raise livestock in Northeast Iowa and both of them work off of the farm.  Caite and Arlene were brought together by a podcast, met on a Facebook group corresponding to that show and have only met in person one time.  However, they have been hosting a weekly show together for almost two years! I was recently a guest on the Barnyard Language Podcast.  I enjoyed the conversation so much and was so impressed with how these ladies went about their business, I invited them to be guests on Off-Farm Income as well.  They tackle some tough issues on their show - everything from parenting to domestic violence in rural communities.  They have a mission and a big vision of how they can inspire more farming podcasts that will help farmers.  I love it, and am thrilled to have interviewed them and to feature them on the show today!

In 2019 Steve Cannon rolled across Knik Lake, an hour northwest of Anchorage Alaska, with more than a hundred others riding, skiing and on foot, down the Iditarod Trail. Leaving McGrath, more than 300-miles away, the 17 remaining would ride and walk deep into the unknown, pushing through fresh snow, across barren tundra, up melting rivers and across a frozen sea as they made their way the 1000-miles to Nome.

Upon his return home, Cannon sat down with Dave Mable to capture his experiences on film. This is his story of crossing Alaska by bike, from the shores of Knik Lake, to the edge of the Bering Sea. Welcome to the first episode of Bike Talk Shorts! (well, kinda... hey... it's my first short! I'll get better making the Shorts short!) - We begin with Kathi Merchant, Co-Director of the 2019 Iditarod Trail Invitational as she dives into a bit of the history of the race, the trail as well as some of the competitors (from Iowa... it was for a news piece in Des Moines). It's all pure Bering Sea gold! Secondly, we talk with Flori Reiterberger on the couch of the host home of the 350-mile checkpoint in McGrath, Alaska. It's a glimpse into what brings someone from the other side of the world to the middle of remote Alaska in the winter. It's also Bering Sea gold! Enjoy this treasure from deep inside one of the most difficult races on the planet. I also share a funny (sort of) story about Flori! In 2019 Steve Cannon embarked on a journey with a handful of other intrepid souls, to ride their bikes along the Iditarod Trail from near Anchorage, across the Alaska Range to Nome, a thousand miles away on the Bering Sea. Bike Talk with Dave's Dave Mable followed along to film a documentary about the journey. Once the two had returned home, Cannon and Mable sat down to record Cannon's experience, from his first fatbike ride all the way through Alaska to Nome. This is the first half of that recording - taking listeners from Cannon's first ride to the starting line of the Iditarod Trail Invitational on the frozen Knik Lake just outside of Anchorage. Tune in next week for Part 2 which will take us, with Cannon, from the starting shotgun blast through the Alaska Range all the way to the Bering Sea. Also, starting this week we'll be randomly dropping a new Bike Talk with Dave Feature: Bike Talk Shorts! Five-to-15-minute stories and interviews with incredible people doing incredible things - this week you'll meet Flori Reiterberger, a fat biker who was attempting his first Iditarod Trail race to Nome. His first event, in Hico, Texas, now attracts top pros from around the U.S., as well as around the world and is known for it's scenic (read: challenging) courses, unique awards, and grassroots feel. Island life was stereotypical in the sense that, Marlon Alcampor, spent his youth exploring every inch of the 212 sq. miles of Guam, much like all of his cousins. Marlon's early years consisted of shredding waves in the Pacific Ocean, fishing off the coast, and hanging out with his plethora of cousins. He absolutely loved island living and the deep culture his home had to offer. Having the desire to see the world outside the confines of that island, Marlon enlisted in the United States Air Force. Interested in criminal justice, Marlon chose to enlist in the security forces career field and became Airman Marlon Alcampor. After his basic military training, Amn Alcampor was shipped to Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota. Commenting on his experience with the brutal cold and the sensitivity of the mission, Amn Alcampor needed a change of climate. Volunteering for his next assignment, Amn Alcampor had the time of his life in Korea and didn't leave empty-handed. Marlon met and married his wife in Korea as she taught English in a local school. Selectively chosen to be a part of the 316th Security Forces Group mission brought along orders to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, where the couple remained until being nominated for recruiting duty. Currently, TSgt Alcampor is the Air Force and Space Force enlisted accessions recruiter in Waterloo, Iowa. Covering 6,800 miles, TSgt Alcampor's area of responsibility takes him all over Central and Northeast Iowa in search of future Airmen. Listen in and hear how TSgt Marlon Alcampor has made the best of the opportunities he's been given and the impact they've made as he continues to chase his wildest dreams.
