This is the type of adventure story you don't get to hear about very often. You very likely know something about Alaska's Iditarod Trail dog-sledding race, a grueling, multiday wilderness endurance test from Anchorage to Nome. Did you know that there is also a race where humans bike, ski, and run on the course? Leadville's own Mitch Dulleck trained for months in the high Rockies and then attended a camp in Alaska to prepare to run the Iditarod Trail Invitational 150-mile race. There was no designated route as he pulled a sled with all of his gear, the only rule being that he had to pass through several checkpoints. The entrants truly have to be self-sufficient in that sometimes-harsh environment. For instance, the race organizers don't promise any rescue should some misfortune befall racers. Competitors need to problem-solve for themselves while enduring possible issues with weather, terrain, injuries, wildlife, and more. Few of us will ever get to breathe the air in such beautiful and serene wilderness, much less race there, so I don't have to tell you that Mitch will be describing a very unique outdoor endurance experience that will have you fascinated as much as it did me, including discussing his training, food, equipment, and seeing the aurora borealis, all of which has stoked Mitch's fire to go back and try the Iditarod Trail's even more challenging 350-mile race.Mitch DulleckFacebook Mitch DulleckInstagram @1mtnrnr1Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

I take on the 2025 Iditarod Trail Invitational. I used this as a breathing test and rode 350 miles from Knik Lake to McGrath, Alaska. I finished in 2 Days, 11 Hours and 19 Minutes (1st Woman, 5th Overall). Here I talk about my 2024 & 2025 races. After my finish, I traveled to Rapha Team Camp in California and now I'm back in Alaska touring the remaining route to Nome with my friend Ana Jager.

In this week's episode we talk to adventure athlete, mountaineer guide and general fan of VLDs (Very Long Distances), Sunny Stroeer about:Being the 1st Woman to ski the entire 1,000 miles at the Iditarod Trail Invitational from Anchorage to NomeHow to manage nutrition during the ITI and VLDsSunny is a free spirit and adventurer. During her 20s, she was a hard-charging Harvard MBA strategy consultant, but at age 30, she turned her back on material possessions and her career in order to live in an Astrovan so she could run and climb full-time instead. Her overarching passion is to be active and push her limits in the side- and backcountry, spanning a multitude of sports from big-wall climbs over multi-day paddling trips, to 100 milers, and everything in between. Her specialty is the high altitude endurance realm; she holds speed records on Aconcagua and on the Annapurna Circuit and has excelled on high trails in the Colorado Rockies. She most recently completed the Iditarod on skis. Sunny and her husband Paul (and husky Dasher) live in Southern Utan and run a hiking and backcountry guide service, and she also founded and runs a mountaineering expedition company for women, by women. She also serves as the executive director for the AWE Summit Scholarship Foundation, which works to increase gender equity on and off the mountains. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.***Keep up with Sunny:Web: SunnyStroeer.comInstagram: @SStroeerDreamland Tours: dreamlandtours.net/AWExpeditions: awexpeditions.org/Mentioned:GU Energy ChewsGU Energy GelsGU Energy Roctane Drink MixWhoop BandNot Mentioned, But Worth Mentioning:After we stopped recording, Sunny mentioned during the ITI, she tried to eat every 3 miles. When she missed resupplies and had to ration to every 4 miles, she said, "When I tried every 4 miles, it just didn't work. I hit the wall, and it wasn't just on the physical level. I could feel my mental state going down because I didn't get in enough carbs. Prior to this, I hadn't see the correlation quite so directly. When I fueled every 3 miles, things were good. Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
If you've been tuning in through this past winter, you have likely heard of my big scary adventure coming up next winter - what will be my first fat bike winter ultra at the Arrowhead 135 - a 135-mile adventure through the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota in late January - it starts in International Falls and is known for it's bitter cold temperatures and deep snow - and while it's not always cold and snowy, as in this past edition (tune in to our conversation with Cate Coward in episode 114!) - but I will say - you'd better be prepared for both! One of the reasons this race is scary for me, is that I'm no fat biker - I don't yet own one, nor have I really spent any time on one - and though it's spring and every week is getting warmer and warmer as we head into summer - it's high time I start thinking about what I'm going to ride next winter! So I dialed up my mentor, Steve McGuire - and who better to talk fat bikes? Steve is not only a veteran of many winter ultras including the Arrowhead 135, Actif Epica, Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational - not only all of that - but he also leads the Design, build ride program at the University of Iowa - a cool class for both engineering and art students to who do just that - design, build then ride their own hand crafted steed. So Steve's not only been riding fat bikes for years and years - but has also been playing with the design - so if you're interested at all in your own winter fat biking, bike design or... well... Iowa Women's Basketball - then I hope you enjoy this conversation with Steve McGuire! While winter has basically been a no show in Minnesota this year, there are places where hearty Minnesotans are currently braving the elements. We Do This For Fun holds one of those people dear to our hearts- Leah Gruhn. For the second year in a row Leah's racing the ITI1000 Iditarod Trail Invitational, a grueling 1000 mile race. While we didn't get a chance to chat with her before she began, we've been following her little dot on Trackleaders. From the race organizers:“Only the most experienced, rugged and intrepid competitors dare to attempt the ITI 1000, the world's longest and toughest winter race.”As we think about Leah we wanted to revisit a podcast recorded last year with Leah and her husband Jere. Visit wedothisforfun.com to follow Leah's progress in real time as she nears the end of this demanding race.@leahgruhn, @itialaska
Iditarod Trail Invitational - jeden z nejdrsnějších maratonských závodů světa. Tisíc mil aljašskou divočinou, teploty k minus čtyřiceti stupňům, tundra i kopce, silný vítr, sníh, vlci, samota ... co je výše v žebříčku obav? Do startu zbývá měsíc. Sbírku, ale třeba i doprovodné projekty ve škole dolaďujeme, tak si zatím můžete poslechnout úvodní podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/milan-brta/message
More than 20 years ago, 7th-grade Kurt entered his first mountain bike race at the Minnesota Zoo, and he's been racing and adventuring on bikes ever since. After bouncing around the road and scenes while in graduate school, he eventually returned to the dirt and became enamored by probing mental and physical limits in multi-day ultra endurance events, winning and setting records in some of the toughest bikepacking races in the United States – Tour Divide, the Arizona Trail 300 and 750, the Colorado Trail Race, the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and more. Today we're honing in on Kurt's recent completion (only the third ever) of biking the CDT. Yes, most of the CDT is bikeable (I didn't know this), with the opportunity to take different routes through the non-bikeable wilderness segments. This trail is hard so even for a seasoned and record-breaking cyclist like Kurt, the mileage doesn't come easy. Rugged backcountry trails are where he loves riding the most. He rides for the Industry Nine - Pivot Pro Backcountry team, and beyond pedaling his bike, Kurt is a co-founder of and the Routes Director at Bikepacking Roots, a cycling coach, a former geology professor, and an advocate for landscapes, backcountry trails, and climate.IG: https://www.instagram.com/kurt.refsnider/Coaching website: https://www.ultramtb.net/Team website: https://backcountry-mtb.com/Our Sponsors:* Check out Oris Watches: https://www.oris.ch* Check out Roark and use my code ASP15 for a great deal: https://roark.com/* Check out Shopify and use my code asp for a great deal: https://www.shopify.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Leah Gruhn has ridden the northern Minnesota winter ultra Arrowhead 135 for more than a decade, as well as the Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational 350. And in 2017 she and her husband jumped on their bikes in Banff Canada and rode south to the U.S. Mexico border in the Tour Divide. This winter she flew back to Alaska and rolled across Knik Lake and up the Iditarod Trail for the 1000-mile journey towards Nome. 21 days later she was the first, and only female to complete the entire journey across Alaska. She was kind enough to spend some time on Bike Talk with Dave just prior to heading south to Florida for a week of warmth! I enjoyed getting to know her, and I hope you will too! So grab cup of Chain and Spoke Coffee and enjoy the show! Thanks for tuning in to todays episode -and thanks to Leah for making time before trading snow drifts for sandy beaches! Look for her on instagram and facebook, doesn't sound like she's done with these great adventures! And later this week, I've got a bonus episode for you! Leah talked about how great it feels to reach Unakaleet on the Bering Sea and the pizza joint called Peace on Earth Pizza. When I was there in 2019 I talked with Peace on Earth owner Brett Hansen - it's pretty interesting how a little pizza joint in a small village on the Bering Sea can thrive serving all the villages in Western Alaska. I'd like to thank Chain and Spoke Coffee and Bikes for supporting the show - you can order your favorite blend now at chainandspoke.com or you can just stop by the first retail location in Des Moines, Iowa! Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
The Rattlesnake Gravel Grind, held on March 24 - 26, 2023, in Sweetwater, TX was a weekend of gravel riding, music, food, camping and fun. We were invited down for some good ol' west Texas hospitality - and this is our experience! Dave and his wife Dee hauled their tandem down I-35, set up their tent in the Sweetwater Lake Campground and had a weekend filled with memories that will last a lifetime and new friendships that will as well. After the windy gravel ride, Dave grabbed his microphone and talked with the 110=mile winners Emily Newsom (and her husband James!), Justin McQuerry as well as others who rode or helped make the event happen, plus race founder David King - and we are played out by a local band: The Backroads West! And as a special treat, Dee joined in on the episode intro and race recap as they drove back north on I-35 (see if you can hear the cracks in the road!)Please consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. The drivetrain hasn't seen a really significant evolution since the advent of index shifting in the 1980's. IMHO. Well, maybe the brake/shift lever combo - but really, not since then. More gears, electronic movements but the things still basically attach and work the same as the old Nuevo Records that our dads rode, mechanically speaking. So I went to the SRAM Eagle XX premier party at Mellow Johnny's in ATX with a bit of skepticism - and curiosity. Dang. It's different! OK - two jocky wheels, and the slant parallelogram are still there - but the UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) is completely different, the adjustments are basically gone, the setup is easy - and super super strong! I talked with product developer Jason Blodgett about the evolution of bike transmission systems! Rebecca Rusch is an accomplished endurance athlete with 40 years of experience. Her list of accomplishments over that time period has been impressive. Among other things, she is a 7x World Champion Adventure Athelete, 2x Iditarod Trail Invitational winner, MTB hall of fame inductee, and a Red Bull Athlete. On today's episode we tackle the topic of Winter Riding. Some of the topics discussed are layering, eating, keeping water from freezing, managing electronics, and going potty. The information is this episode is invaluable and it's a result of Rebecca's extensive personal experiences. Welcome to the first episode of Bike Talk Shorts! (well, kinda... hey... it's my first short! I'll get better making the Shorts short!) - We begin with Kathi Merchant, Co-Director of the 2019 Iditarod Trail Invitational as she dives into a bit of the history of the race, the trail as well as some of the competitors (from Iowa... it was for a news piece in Des Moines). It's all pure Bering Sea gold! Secondly, we talk with Flori Reiterberger on the couch of the host home of the 350-mile checkpoint in McGrath, Alaska. It's a glimpse into what brings someone from the other side of the world to the middle of remote Alaska in the winter. It's also Bering Sea gold! Enjoy this treasure from deep inside one of the most difficult races on the planet. I also share a funny (sort of) story about Flori! In 2019 Steve Cannon embarked on a journey with a handful of other intrepid souls, to ride their bikes along the Iditarod Trail from near Anchorage, across the Alaska Range to Nome, a thousand miles away on the Bering Sea. Bike Talk with Dave's Dave Mable followed along to film a documentary about the journey. Once the two had returned home, Cannon and Mable sat down to record Cannon's experience, from his first fatbike ride all the way through Alaska to Nome. This is the first half of that recording - taking listeners from Cannon's first ride to the starting line of the Iditarod Trail Invitational on the frozen Knik Lake just outside of Anchorage. Tune in next week for Part 2 which will take us, with Cannon, from the starting shotgun blast through the Alaska Range all the way to the Bering Sea. Also, starting this week we'll be randomly dropping a new Bike Talk with Dave Feature: Bike Talk Shorts! Five-to-15-minute stories and interviews with incredible people doing incredible things - this week you'll meet Flori Reiterberger, a fat biker who was attempting his first Iditarod Trail race to Nome. Those of you following the Iditarod Trail Invitational may have noticed a couple of riders heading back to Anchorage, RJ Sauer being one of them. On the heels of just publishing a podcast with RJ, he messaged me to let me know that his heart just wasn't in it. I thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to connect with RJ, while it is all fresh, to talk about what happened and why.Just showing up to an event like this is an endeavour in and of itself, but when so much time and energy is spent on preparation and logistics, not finishing an event can be devastating. In RJ's case, he was able to find peace in his decision and in the episode, he shares his mindset. RJ first rode the 1000 mile ITI back in 2001 as a 26 year old Film Maker producing the film, Thin White Line. It was his first bikepacking race and the catalyst for many adventures to come. You can read more about his adventures over at rjsauer.com or on his Instagram page, where he more or less journals his life. There are lots of great takeaways in the one. Scratching is always a possibility and sometimes it can't be avoided. Listen in as RJ shares some wisdom that we can all learn from. One of the fringe benefits of doing this podcast is having my guest's phone numbers. I saw that RJ Sauer was getting ready for the Iditarod Trail invitational, 350-mile race across Alaska, so I reached out to him to wish him luck and to keep the rubber side down. The next day, I was thinking to myself “Is he in Alaska already?”. When I found out that he was, I figured this would be a great opportunity to talk to RJ. The last time we spoke was back on 002. RJ Sauer - Perseverance Personified. This conversation was one for the books and one in which we covered a ton of topics. We talked a little about the Iditarod Trail Invitational but then, as my podcast goes, we took many tangents along the way. We talked about presence, groupthink, the Tour Divide, and selfishness. I asked him about his writing process. We also covered imposter syndrome, storytelling, and what's your “why”, a hot topic for many endurance athletes and a question we often ask when we're suffering in an event. Our guest today is familiar with the Iditarod in more than one way. He has been on the Iditarod trail on both bike and dog sled. Yes, Jimmy Hendrix, but with a bike, not a guitar! David and Jimmy have crafted a 30, 60 & 100+ mile gravel race through the power-producing (wind and oil) west Texas hill country - and don't worry, the Rattlesnake Round-up is the week prior to this weekend-long celebration, so the likelyhood of seeing this race's namesake is very low! The Rattlesnake Gravel Grind is an entire weekend of activities, with music, food (breakfast every day!), , beer, camping and riding is planned for March 24-26. 25-30 mile Shakedown rides on Friday and Sunday with the main event on Saturday. Shaun Barnes is a friend who we've had on the podcast a few times before. He's been doing big stuff! If you remember, we had him and his coach on to talk about his experience doing the Triple Crown of 200s. Then, we had him on to catch up and talk about the Iditarod Trail Invitational which he ended up not finishing, but he learned a ton! THEN, we had him on to discuss his experience returning to the ITI which resulted in an awesome finish. We even spoke to his girlfriend at the end for a few minutes to get her perspective on Shaun's endeavors and how emotionally hard it was to track him while she was home and he was off running this race in Alaska for 8 days! (links to previous episodes below) For this episode, we dive into Shaun's preparation for the Iditarod Trail Invitational 1000-mile journey that he starts next week! Listen as we discuss this major undertaking and be ready to track him as he runs 1000 miles of cold to get to the finish! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/sbarnes4
In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to dive deep into cold biking with Doug Dunlop. A veteran winter biker with decades of experience riding in the winter, Doug was one of the first people to reach out with advice when I complained of cold feet this winter when I got a fatbike. Doug has participated in numerous winter biking events, countless overnighters and was also on the start line of the first Iditarod Trail Invitational after it changed from being the Iditabike. Doug is also an advocate for getting children involved in winter exploration and when his children were younger he took them on multiple overnight adventures. He also makes his own custom winter-riding gear which he sells on his site coldbike.com. In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to talk with Richard Cohen. Richard has a really interesting story as he is a retired Canadian Air Force fighter pilot, that got back into mountain biking as so many of us do in their late 20s or early 30s. Through that journey he discovered fatbiking and is constantly pushing himself to take on greater challenges. With the ultimate goal of participating in the Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska, he has taken part in a several different fatbike races in the US, ridden the Route Blanch in Eastern Quebec as an unsupported Individual Time Trial and is continually exploring ways of refining his winter riding skills. Winter is upon us again and as we talked about last week on the show, so is the season for base training. For many runners in Canada and the northern United States, this can mean a lot of long, slow miles in very cold temperatures which can seem daunting and maybe even a little scary. We thought this would be a good time to re-release an episode we recorded with Scott Sugimoto in Jan of 2021. Scott Sugimoto is a 61 year old gentleman from Winnipeg who has an extensive running history in both road and trail running. He has completed multiple half and full marathons, as well as many trail ultramarathons including Actif Epica and Arrowhead. Scott has an affinity for winter running and is a wealth of knowledge on the subject. In this episode we get into the dos and don'ts of winter running including: What to wearWhat NOT to wearHow to keep your water from freezing,Preventing frostbiteWinter footwear. We are grateful to Scott for sharing his winter running wisdom with us.Resources we discussed in the episode:Favourite Mantra: Just survive somehow; I am one with the Force and the Force is with meFavourite Place to Run: BC mountainsBucket List Run or Fat Bike Ride: Tuscobia, Arrowhead 135, Iditarod Trail Invitational, Greenland Arctic Circle TrailFavourite Movie/Book: Prefontaine; On Thin Ice; In Shackleton's Footsteps; Post-Run Indulgence: A cup of soupConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Kim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's website (sign up for her free weekly newsletter on the homepage)We love hearing from you! You're invited inside a small host house in Nome, Alaska, to eaves drop on the post-race banter with the ITI1000 Co-Champions John Logar and Petr Ineman. They were interviewed for the film 1000 Miles to Nome only 18 hours after completing the 1000 Mile race from Anchorage to Nome along the Iditarod Trail in 19 days. We also have a couple of special guests including Howard Farley, the 20th place finisher in the inaugural Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1973 as he describes how the famous finishers monument - a huge burled tree - came to mark the end of the trail. We are sung in by Mr. Brett Hansen - Owner of Peace on Earth Pizza in Unakaleet Alaska - who graces us with the Iditarod Trail Song. Thanks for listening to Bike Talk with Dave! Petr (without an 'e') Ineman finished his fourth 1000 mile travers of the Iditarod Trail on fat bike this winter, reaching the famous burled arch first for the third time. He tells us stories of the challenges of living on the remote trail for more than two weeks; bitter temperatures, soft snow and hurricane force winds. The Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) is a 350 or 1000 mile invite- only race across the Alaskan wilderness on the Iditarod Trail, built to connect the gold mining towns with Seward and Anchorage on the east and Nome and the Bering Sea on the west, it was made famous by the 50-year-old sled dog race that occurs at the same time as the ITI. This week I wanted to bring you a conversation with Jennifer Hanson gojennygo67 about her 350 mile Iditarod Trail Invitational which she finished in 6 days 2 hours.Arizona born and raised, Jennifer grew up in the outdoors. She makes a living training horses but is also an experienced equestrian endurance rider. In these endurance events, a competitor will ride their noble steed over a 50 - 100 mile course trying to be the first across the line. Imagine having to feed and water your rig as well as yourself! It's clear that with this experience, and the addition of Jay P's Fat Camp and Fat Pursuit events, she was ready to dip her toes into winter ultras with the ITI 350. And given her success in the 2022 ITI, she plans to ride to Nome in 2024.In this episode we talk about how she prepared for the ITI and the things she learned along the way. We talk about her relaxed and confident mindset and how important it is to enter these events with an open mind. Her advice to anyone wanting to push their limits is that you'll never know until you try. I hope you enjoy this conversation.Lions - SkilletSave 25% off a consultation at Cycling 101 when you use the code MB40 at checkout.Save 25% at Dynamic Cyclist when you use the promo code MB40 at checkout.Visit Rollingdale CycleThanks to Lakeside Bikes in Invermere for supporting me!
Shaun Barnes is a friend who we've had on the podcast a couple of times before. He's been doing big stuff! If you remember, we had him and his coach on to talk about his experience doing the Triple Crown of 200s. Then, we had him on to catch up and talk about the Iditarod Trail Invitational which he ended up not finishing, but he learned a ton! This time, we get to discuss his experience this year running the ITI which resulted in an awesome finish. Keep listening at the end where we chat for a few minutes with his girlfriend to get her perspective on Shaun's endeavors and how emotionally hard it was to track him while she was home and he was off running this race in Alaska for 8 days! Tyson Flaharty lives in Fairbanks Alaska and loves to race his Fatbike! In February of 2022, he started his fourth ITI350 - 300+ miles along the Iditarod Trail from Anchorage (Knik) to McGrath, and was the first to reach the remote gold mining outpost. Tyson talks about life on the trail, race strategy and equipment choices needed to compete in one of the most challenging ultra marathon bike packing races on earth.
Did you know an ultramarathon can be more than 100 miles? Will has run races as long as 340 miles in temperatures as low as -30 or as high as 125 degrees. Is he crazy or is he just proof that humans can do hard things? In this episode, we discuss the full origin story of the marathon, training and nutrition, as well as what motivates someone to run races of epic extremes. Will is a world-class racer competing in events such as the Iditarod Trail Invitational, Hardrock 100, Ultra Trail Tour de Mt Blanc, Tor des Geants, and Badwater -- just to name a few. In just a few weeks, he'll be competing in the Spartathlon in Greece which retraces the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long-distance runner, who in 490 BC was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians. Even if running isn't your thing, there is so much in this episode that will leave you feeling inspired.
In Episode 10, we get to talk with Rebecca Rusch, the “Queen of Pain.” Whether she is on a cycling expedition in a remote part of the world or teaching others at her namesake gravel bike academy in Idaho, she inspires people to be their best with energy, positivity, and passion. Most recently she completed a previously unattempted North to South route traversing Iceland in winter by fatback alongside Chris Burkard and Angus Morton. She has paired this with a desire to “be good” by entering the world of philanthropy.
