Thank you for listening today, friends! We're back, this time with an episode detailing my running journey. It hasn't been linear, and has involved nearly a dozen uses of the phrase "you'll never run again." The journey has taught me patience, courage, determination and perseverance to reach my goals. I've struggled to finish a one-kilometer run, watched the entire PE class move on to the next activity before I completed the Cooper test (6 lap run of 1.5 miles/2.4km), and DNF'd my first two 100 milers. Focusing on strength, flexibility, nutrition and overall wellness, being open to trying new things such as barefoot shoes, throwing away my orthotics, and incorporating yoga into my routine has kept me healthy to compete in ultras twenty-plus years after the first "you'll never run again." I've had an interesting and non-linear journey as a runner from that first 10km race with WAY too many people, to an injury at a marathon 3 short weeks later to finishing the hottest Javelina Jundred on record. Tune in today to hear about the journey, the decision to become a UESCA ultra running coach, and the training philosophy I offer. I'm here to get you to the finish line with a smile on your face. As always, connect with me on Instagram or through my website.

Thank you for listening, friend! Today I'm talking about my experience training for a 100 miler, Javelina Jundred, while working a physically demanding job. A coach help me achieve my goal of completing the 100 miler, in what was my third attempt at the distance. That supportive coaching catalyzed my decision to also pursue ultramarathon coaching through the UESCA certification process. My challenge was to not overtrain while working a job in which I am on my feet all day and burn over 5,000 calories with physical activity. Recovery was a challenge for me, as was fitting in all the life things. In this episode I share my experiences over the summer of 2024, as well as my new process now that I am self-coached. It's an evolving process in which I am using myself as a guinea pig to see how my theory works. Researching strategies for athletes working physically demanding jobs yielded some tips but not a lot of data or personal experiences of the training process. I found resources from CTS Coaching, UESCA, RunningShoesGuru online and combined that with what I am currently doing. Some takeaways from this episode include tips to avoid overtraining, tips to enhance recovery from training, the importance of realistic goals, the benefits of working with a coach, how to maximize training sessions and what cross-training methods can be more supportive. It's an evolving adventure as a self-coached athlete... and one who trains solo at least 95% of the time. If you're in a physical job and looking for support and coaching, I'm happy to chat with about your life situation, goals and current training. I am accepting athletes, and look forward to helping you achieve personal success in whatever form that takes. Remember, you can always contact me through Instagram or at cactus moose[at]protonmail[dot]com with questions, comments, guest suggestions and ultrarun coaching.Enjoy your day, friends!

It's a treat today to chat with ultra runner and acupuncturist Talia Chevassus! Talia talks about her adventures as a run coach, how her interest in running developed over the past few years, and about future goals. She's rearranged her schedule and life to fit her outdoor passion, while balancing acupuncture clients, yoga and making the majority of her food from scratch. Our discussion also covers Quebec trails (hello, technical!), nutrition for endurance sports and for recovery, using yoga to cross-train and stay injury-free, hiring a coach, and Talia's love of travel to explore on her own two feet. It's an inspiring and empowering episode: as she says, the easiest way to keep progressing is to just do what you need to regardless of the weather. That advice holds true no matter which avenue of life we're considering. Talia is active on Instagram, sharing her run, yoga and food journey as she pushes herself physically while traveling frequently. This year's Javelina Jundred 100 mile race was one of the hottest on record, with the temperature reaching the triple digits. It is a race I have wanted to try for a while. I love the format at the vibes of the race. So it was great to catch up with Rachel and hear her story about running through the heat. Her last name may be familiar because we talked to her husband, Brian Papay, in Episode 30.
Ashley is an ultrarunner with an incredible track record of outdoor adventures in the Sierras. Moving from marathon training to lose weight for college credit to winning ultramarathons after starting on dirt to better exercise her dog off-leash, Ashley is a badass on trails. We talk about some of the opportunities she has living in the Great Basin with access to the Sierra in less than an hour, exploring the mountains with her dog, then her dogs, camping trips to hot springs, and point-to-point adventures she has her sights on. Ashley has completed a number of epic races, and just as many big adventure days in the Lake Tahoe area. Mindset is a key theme of our discussion, including how to press on in an adventure despite pain and mental challenges, and what it was like exploring, solo, with paper maps. This episode covers Ashley's experience at Javelina Jundred 2024, which featured an entirely runnable course with 105 degree temperatures in the open desert, how to troubleshoot long adventures and ultramarathons when nutrition, weather or injuries take things sideways, and some future experiences on her "one day" list. Ashley frequently explores trails in Tahoe, and shares some of the learnings from her Tahoe Rim Trail Fastest Known Time (FKT) attempt, big future goals, and volunteering at races to give back to the run community. Some of the invaluable wisdom she shares: take baby steps toward your goal then add on. She first started running ten minutes, then added time the next run. Now, she's going after sub-20 hour 100 mile races and pondering some of the most challenging events in North America. If there's a will, there's a way! Ashley can be found out on the trails with one or both of her dogs, or on Instagram at @ashleyyayoutside You can always connect with me on Instagram @cactusmoose or through my website.
The local Huntington, West Virginia, trail running scene is on the rise, and our boys are not only at the tip-top of the trail running scene in their home state and the East Coast but the rest of the country is starting to notice, too. In this episode, we welcome Dan Green, Caleb Bowen, Alex Minor, and Logan Kirby into the studio to talk about the Javelina Jundred race for Dan and Caleb, their 3rd and 8th place finishes in a stacked field, pacing, running in the heat, West Virginia trail races, and some good ole fashioned non-sense. You'll love this edition with our local studs, and if you're on the fence about signing up for the Hurricane Hundred K, prepare to be convinced.
Today I want to talk through a little bit of what has been going on with me mentally over the past month or so. Many have called it "post race blues" which man people feel after so many months leading into a big event and are left feeling a little lost. Many have told me that I am going through post race blues coming off the Javelina Jundred but I think it is more detailed than that. Let me know what you think and thank you always for listening! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/50kready/support

What does it take to have an amazing race in a type of terrain that is a different style from what you're normally used to? For Jeff Mogavero, an accomplished mountain ultrarunner for On Running, he looked to answer that question by racing in the Javelina Jundred 100 miler, just months after completing UTMB. And even though the flatter course was relatively unique territory for Jeff based on his past races, he was able to finish second place and win a Golden Ticket to Western States 100! How did he do it? In this episode he shares his training, race strategy, hydration strategy, and mindset that all led to his special day in the desert. We cover things such as: How to go from mountain training to flat training Optimizing mindset both in training and in the race How to nail hydration (even if it has been a struggle point in the past) How to execute a plan in a race, even when the conditions are tough How to enjoy the process amidst hard training Huge thank you to Jeff for coming on the show! Brandon Johnston from Surfside Beach, South Carolina made the trip out west to run the Javelina Jundred and did so in under 24 hours. I accompanied him to crew and pace him. We relive it all here.
I recently cheered my brother on in a 100-mile race called the Javelina Jundred. Watching him grind out all those long, hot miles awed me, terrified me, and taught me about the way we create transformation in our lives. It's messy, it's slow, and it's inevitable if you keep going—but many of us stop because we're waiting for a magical moment of transformation rather than the unremarkable and boring work of taking the next step. In today's episode, I'm sharing all the things I learned by watching my brother do something impossible, unthinkable, unbearable, and insurmountable by simply (but never easily) putting one foot in front of another.
Today, Hilary Yang and Leah Yingling sit down and chat with Lauren Peretz. Lauren just finished third place at this past Javelina 100 miler in a blazing fast time of 15 hours and 50 seconds. We are so excited to sit down and chat with Lauren today. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Hannah shares insights into her season, which included so many different races like the Chuckanut 50k, Gorge 30k, Transvulcania, and Istria 101k, detailing her preparation and the strategic choices behind each race. She discusses her journey leading up to Javelina, emphasizing the importance of running her own race, maintaining mental resilience, and her fueling plan—complete with the decision to shove gels into her bra to keep them cool. Finally, we touch on her coaching and work as a PT and how she combines them to develop trail-running specific strength programs for her athletes. Additionally, Keely and Corrine explore a new study on NCAA D1 cross country athletes, highlighting concerns about body weight, energy balance, and the often-overlooked experiences of male athletes. Thank you for listening! Today's episode is a neat twist where my coach, Sarah, interviews me about my experience running the 100 miler at Javelina Jundred on October 26-27, 2024, in Fountain Hills, Arizona. We cover a variety of topics including the format of the race, how I felt leading up to it, what clothing and gear I wore, what worked and didn't, and some key takeaways. It was the hottest Javelina on record, with temperatures in the triple digits out on the course. Nearly half of the entrants to the 100 mile and 100 kilometer races did not finish, mostly due to issues resulting from the heat. It was a fun day to be out on trails to test myself: much was learned. I'm profoundly grateful to all the staff and volunteers at Aravaipa Running, the crews and supporters who came out, Maricopa County parks, and to my pacers and crew. A big thanks goes out to Sarah, Tony, Nicole, Jen, Lindsay, Heidi, Elly, Kearstin, Mike, Lee, Jubilee, Tristan, Matt, Joe, Julian and Adam. Some of the highlights of the race are being surprised by my friend Tony, who flew in to see Nicole and pace me; a delicious burger at Jackass Junction from Julian; sharing miles with Jon and Elly; loop 4 with Tony and loop 5 with Sarah; Nicole popping my blisters before loop 4 by headlamp. It was a huge adventure! The burning question... will I run Javelina again? Well, tune in today to find out the answer to that question! Connect with me on Instagram or cactusmoose@protonmail.com for questions, comments and guest suggestions. I'm excited to have some interviews in the queue for the next few months!

We did it! At Javelina Jundred, I ran a 15:28 100-mile time with a negative split and came in 10th place male. And I can now say that I got redemption after last year's race that didn't go well. This podcast breaks down my training for the race, what it takes to improve on mistakes, how to train intently to get a PR at an ultramarathon distance, and how to overcome mental low points to turn a bad situation into your greatest triumph. The point of this podcast isn't just to recap the race; I put this out to inspire you to never give up on your big goals. Even when you fail along the way. This result was years in the making, and I faced a lot of obstacles, self-doubt, and challenges along the way. But know that even if you face the same, you can overcome those things to run YOUR best race ever, get redemption, and feel fully fulfilled by the result you put out there. Plus, we cover all of your questions on heat acclimation, nutrition and hydration, pacing, mindset, gear, and more! Thank you so much for listening and for all of your support! Thank you for listening today, friends! It's been hot out here in the desert as I acclimatize for Javelina Jundred in just a couple more weeks. The inspiration for this episode came from an experience last week: bats were raiding the hummingbird feeder! I've rarely seen bats, or a bat, in my life: definitely less times than I can count on one hand. It was a neat experience, and I explored the deeper meaning behind a bat encounter to satisfy my curiosity. Bats are about death and rebirth, a prescient omen with the change of seasons underway, daylight savings approaching, autumn harvests in full swing, and Hallowe'en on the horizon. Listen in for the message bat shares with us and for some musings on how that can be translated into reflection for your current experience. As always you can contact me at cactusmoose@protonmail with questions, comments and guest suggestions. We're looking forward to some more interviews and discussions in the remainder of 2024.
Dakota ran a CR setting time at the Javelina Jundred in 2022 running 12:58:02 for 100 miles in the delightfully devilish Arizona desert. That's 7:41/mile pace!!!!!! Brett Hornig is the kind of coach who constantly thinks about his athletes and what will make them better. He is thoughtful, analytical and likely one of the best running minds on the planet. After a successful four years of collegiate cross country and track he got a job at Rogue Valley Runners and transitioned to the trails with dreams of black toenails and 5,000 foot climbs. Brett has finished in the top-10 in many U.S. trail ultras including 2024 performances at the Black Canyons 60k, Waldo 100k, Tushars 70k, Silver State 50 Miler, and the 2023 Javelina Jundred. Brett has coached 100's of runner with roughly half focusing on trails and half focusing on the roads. He knows the good and the bad of running, having dealt with some injuries early in his career he has a quiver of knowledge on how to successfully stay healthy. "I call them my big dances."Natalie Pertz describes the running adventures - sometimes in the form of races, other times a bit broader than that definition - that she highlights each year on her calendar. The list is nothing short of epic, including the Chicago Marathon, the Javelina Jundred, setting a "Fastest Known Time" on the WO&D trail. (By the way, I did fact check. FastestKnownTime.com has been around longer than Strava.)Natalie is both earnest and funny talking about her running. She describes training for an ultra in the Southwest of the United States in a "suburban lawnmower hat." We discuss our childhood love for capture the flag. We discuss her experience growing up on a farm in Ohio and her first official 5K, the Run for Refugees in New Haven. And we talk about WERC, not to be confused with work. West End Run Club kicked off in 2021, and the Friday morning running, chatting, and coffee drinking crew has been a DC staple ever since. It's so welcoming, that it has grown quite a bit! This episode was recorded in July, but I've been a bit slower with both recording and editing these days. Thank you for your patience - you know life (and another bout of marathon training) keeps you busy! Anyhow, thank you (and happy birthday) to a very kind and speedy community leader, Natalie Pertz!

Can you run ultramarathons, even if you don't have any traditional running background? You bet! And Kaleb Stephens is a great example of that. Not only has he completed 13 ultramarathons, but he did that within a 4 year span, coming from a low point in his life where he dealt with depression and wasn't running frequently. His key to success? Not wanting to live a life on others' terms. And that has driven him to finish the Cocodona 250 miler, run a sub-20 hour 100 miler at Javelina Jundred, and also complete multiple ultramarathons. And in this episode, Kaleb shares his story on how he was able to make progress in his running journey, how you can find a running community in your life (even if you don't have runners around you), and how to use doubt as a fuel source to power your biggest dreams. Kaleb Stephens is an ultrarunner, content creator, coach, and community advocate who has amassed the following of tens of thousands of runners. And his mission is to help inspire others to live a life worth living. Huge thank you to Kaleb for coming on the show!
