In this episode of The Good Life EDU Podcast, Andrew Easton is joined by Kris Hagel, Chief Information Officer of Peninsula School District. Peninsula has been thoughtfully implementing artificial intelligence in K–12 education since early 2023. Now in their fourth year of AI work, Peninsula offers an honest look at what it takes to move beyond one-off trainings and instead build a sustainable, values-driven approach to AI adoption. Chris shares how early collaboration between instructional leaders and technology teams shaped the district's direction, why universal design for learning (UDL) remained non-negotiable, and how teachers—especially in English and social studies—have reimagined assessment by focusing on student process rather than just final products. The conversation also explores practical system-level considerations, including data privacy, vetted tools, local AI models, and the realities districts face when balancing innovation with responsibility. As the episode closes, Andrew and Chris wrestle with one of the most pressing and unresolved questions in education today: students' growing use of AI for companionship, mental health support, and social connection. Whether your district is just beginning its AI journey or refining systems already in place, this episode offers grounded insight, cautionary wisdom, and a reminder that meaningful change takes time, trust, and intentional leadership. OpenAI has declared a "code red" as it faces intensified competition from companies like Google and Anthropic, prompting a shift in focus towards enhancing the capabilities of its ChatGPT platform. CEO Sam Altman has urged staff to prioritize improvements in speed, reliability, and personalization, delaying other initiatives such as advertising. This strategic pivot comes as OpenAI also announced an ownership stake in Thrive Holdings, a company that acquires and transforms service firms, particularly in accounting and IT, with the aim of integrating AI to improve operational efficiency.A recent study by Stebo Systems highlights a significant gap between Chief Information Officers' (CIOs) perceptions of their organizations' AI readiness and the actual state of their data management. While 91% of U.S. business leaders recognize the importance of customer data management, only 31% fully trust their data. The study reveals that 76% of organizations still rely on side spreadsheets to address data issues, indicating a lack of centralized data governance. This fragmentation leads to wasted time and lost revenue, underscoring the need for robust data governance frameworks as organizations aim to adopt AI-driven services. The episode also discusses the implications of surveillance AI, particularly a model developed by Securis Technologies that predicts and prevents crimes among inmates using data from prison phone calls. While the company claims success in disrupting criminal activities, concerns about civil liberties and the ethical use of such data have been raised. This situation serves as a cautionary tale for IT service providers, emphasizing the importance of establishing governance frameworks to mitigate risks associated with AI deployment in business environments. For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT leaders, the key takeaway is the necessity of controlling their own AI strategies. As OpenAI integrates vertically into the service industry, independent MSPs must differentiate themselves by building their own AI capabilities and data governance practices. The episode stresses that without a solid data foundation, AI initiatives are likely to fail, and MSPs should focus on enhancing data quality and governance to ensure successful AI implementations and maintain client trust. Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a global professional services firm commits over one billion dollars to AI and expects it to reshape the way its people work across every corner of the business? That question sat with me as I spoke with Russ Ahlers, Chief Information Officer at BDO USA, and someone who has spent three decades building technology foundations that hold up some of the most complex operations in the industry. This conversation goes straight into the reality of enterprise AI programs, the human decisions behind them, and the scale required to turn strategy into day to day transformation. Russ shares how BDO is approaching AI as a global effort rather than a series of disconnected projects. He explains how the firm's five year investment is designed to upgrade core systems, bring automation into areas that slow teams down, and build intelligent capabilities that support professionals across audit, tax, and advisory. I was interested in how he balances ambition with governance, and he offers a grounded view on why AI only delivers real value when firms focus on data quality, security, and practical use cases that free people to do higher value work. What stood out is Russ's long view. His time leading BDO International's IT strategy shaped the way he thinks about scale, convergence, and consistency. Across this episode he reflects on the lessons learned from supporting member firms worldwide, the importance of shared standards, and the cultural shift needed for AI to land with impact across a large workforce. His perspective is shaped by years of integrating new firms into the BDO network, where technology adoption and organisational change must move together. This episode is a chance to understand how a major global organisation is building its future on intelligent systems, why long term investments matter, and how leaders think about readiness, risk, and opportunity when the stakes are high. It also speaks to something more personal. Russ talks about the mindset behind modern IT leadership, the importance of curiosity, and the practical realities of running an innovation program that touches every part of the enterprise. Where do you stand on the idea of a billion dollar AI commitment, and what questions would you want answered before making a move like that? I would love to hear what you think. “AI is hungry — for bandwidth, for speed, and for talent.” — Jean-Philippe Avelange, Chief Information Officer, Expereo Jean-Philippe Avelange, CIO of Expereo, joined Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, to discuss findings from Expereo's Horizon Telecom Report—revealing how U.S. organizations are losing millions to network failures and struggling to find skilled professionals in cybersecurity, networking, and data automation. Avelange explained that as companies digitize everything from collaboration to customer experience, connectivity interruptions now directly halt business operations, making network reliability as vital as cybersecurity. “Modern enterprises are building their products and services on connectivity. When it stops, business stops,” he noted. The AI multiplier AI adoption is compounding the challenge. “AI is not just another workload—it's a new kind of demand,” Avelange said. AI-driven automation, real-time data flows, and low-latency interactions place unprecedented pressure on legacy network architectures. Organizations can no longer treat networking as a commodity; they must rethink it as a strategic platform requiring redesign and intelligent automation. The human factor According to Avelange, the real shortage isn't people—it's adaptability. The industry needs professionals skilled in network automation, data flow optimization, and problem solving, not just hardware management. “AI won't solve your problem if you don't understand the problem,” he said, advocating for upskilling internal teams alongside strong partnerships with managed service providers (MSPs) that bring intelligence, not just infrastructure. Latency by design Latency, Avelange warned, must be addressed before deployment. “You can always add bandwidth, but you can't add speed after the fact. Latency has to be engineered from the start.” A new mindset For Expereo, the future of networking lies in intelligent connectivity—solutions that merge automation, analytics, and agility to keep enterprises resilient in the AI era. “We're not selling boxes,” Avelange said. “We're helping companies design the networks their digital business runs on.” Read more in the Horizon Telecom Report or visit expereo.com.

Online crime is accelerating, making cybersecurity a fast-growing and resilient investment opportunity. Our Cybersecurity and Network and Equipment analyst Meta Marshall discusses the key trends driving this market shift.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript ----- Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Meta Marshall, Morgan Stanley's Cybersecurity and Network and Equipment Analyst. Today – the future of digital defense against cybercrime. It's Friday, September 12th, at 10am in New York.Imagine waking up to find your bank account drained, your business operations frozen, or your personal data exposed – all because of a cyberattack. Today, cybersecurity isn't an esoteric tech issue. It impacts all of us, both as consumers and investors. As the digital landscape grows increasingly complex, the scale and severity of cybercrime expand in tandem. This means that even as companies spend more, the risks are multiplying even faster. For investors, this is both a warning and an opportunity.Cybersecurity is now a $270 billion market. And we expect it to grow at 12 percent per year through 2028. That's one of the fastest growth rates across software. And here's another number worth noting: Chief Information Officers we surveyed expect cybersecurity spending to grow 50 percent faster than software spending as a whole. This makes cybersecurity the most defensive area of IT budgets—meaning it's least likely to be cut, even in tough times. This hasn't been lost on investors. Security software has outperformed the broader market, and over the past three years, security stocks have delivered a 58 percent return, compared to just 22 percent for software overall and 79 percent for the NASDAQ. We expect this outperformance against software to continue as AI expands the number of ways hackers can get in and the ways those threats are evolving.Looking ahead, we see a handful of interconnected mega themes driving investment opportunities in cybersecurity. One of the biggest is platformization – consolidating security tools into a unified platform. Today, major companies juggle on average 130 different cyber security tools. This approach often creates complexity, not clarity, and can leave dangerous gaps in protection particularly as the rise of connected devices like robots and drones is making unified security platforms more important than ever. And something else to keep in mind: right now, security investments make up only 1 percent of overall AI spending, compared to 6 percent of total IT budgets—so there's a lot of room to grow as AI becomes ever more central to business operations. In today's cybersecurity race, it's not enough to simply pile on more tools or chase the latest buzzwords. We think some of the biggest potential winners are cybersecurity providers who can turn chaos into clarity. In addition to growing revenue and free cash flow, these businesses are weaving together fragmented defenses into unified, easy-to-manage platforms. They want to get smarter, faster, and more resilient – not just bigger. They understand that it's key to cut through the noise, make systems work seamlessly together, and adapt on a dime as new threats emerge. In cybersecurity, complexity is the enemy—and simplicity is the new superpower. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, please leave us a review wherever you listen and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.
