The fourth annual Rattlesnake Gravel Grind, held in Sweetwater, Texas on March 22, was a hot, dusty and windy affair with repeat winners in both the men's and women's fields. Lauren Stephens and Joe Laverick repeated their victories from 2024. The infamous Bike Talk with Dave microphone emerged shortly after the podium presentation where Lauren as well as the top four men shared their thoughts on the day. (Top four men: Joe Laverick, Chris Mehlman, Hayden Christian and Justin McQuerry). We also enjoy the music of Nikki Heath (Beyond Destiny) and The Bo Barns, who entertained riders during the weekend's festivities. This weeks guest, Kurt Refsnider, is one of the greats when it comes to super long, difficult, mountainous and often cold and snowy bikepacking adventures. He's been to Nome Alaska on the Iditarod Trail, finished the Tour Divide in 15 days and has reached Master of the Universe status on the Arizona Trail! We also talk about his podium finish at the U.S. Cyclocross National Championships! In his years of bike packing, he figured out a way to combine his passion for teaching geology with cycling, leading students on a Geology Through Bikepacking course at Prescott College in Arizona. Since then he's been busy with, not only his coaching at UltraMTB but has now chosen to direct his energy toward co-founding the Bikepacking Roots organization to help grow and advocate for the bikepacking community. A recent success of Bikepacking Roots was helping develop and pass a new national law: the BOLT Act - which is part of the larger, very outdoor recreationally friendly EXPLORE Act, passed in early January of 2025. And if he hasn't been busy enough with all of that - he's also an athlete ambassador of POW - or the Protect Our Winters organization. John Howard was a pioneer in American cycling, representing the U.S. in the 1968, 72 and 76 Olympic Games. As a four-time U.S. Road Racing National Champion, he was one of the first Americans to race in Europe. He also stood atop the podium at the 1971 PanAmerican Games. After his days road racing, he turned to triathlon, winning the fourth edition of the Ironman World Championships in 1981 and followed that in 1982 by taking second in the first edition of RAAM, The Race Across America, And in 1985, on a very specially built bicycle, tucked in behind a rocket car on the Bonneville salt flats he set a cycling speed record of 152.2 miles per hour! Still riding, coaching and writing, he has recently released his latest book about an early American Hero: Marshall, Major, Taylor, the first American cycling superstar! His book: The Black Cyclone; A Hero the World Forgot, details the trials and challenges faced by a black athletic super star in post Civil War America, and how he overcame those obstacles to become the fastest cyclist in the world at the time. Scott Sumpter, originator of BIKEIOWA.com, is a prolific winter fat biker yet still enjoys being warm and not loosing his digits to frostbite! As such, he has put much thought and research into the science of keeping your hands and feet warm - and discovered that the material your handlebars are made of matters to your hands! In his recently published article; "Convection Convection, what's your Function" he explores the heat conductivity of four types of handlebars: Aluminum, Titanium, Steel and Carbon Fibre. In this episode, we discuss this, as well as other ways to stay comfortable while riding all winter. The Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships, SSCXWC, brings together the greatest well-rounded riders in the world to test their mettle through Feats of Strength and the most demanding cyclocross the host town can find to dish out. In the words of Sarah Sturm from 2022 in Durango: "Single Speed Cyclocross World Champs is the not-so-underground, fringe, party event that calls itself a World Champs and, in many ways, it is. But instead of (doing drugs) (marginal gains) that make you faster, you do things that make you slower like keg stands, whiskey shots, and hot dog hand-ups."The 2024 edition was hosted in Madison, Wisconsin and an old friend of mine, now living in Missoula, Montana, made the 24+ hour drive to go for the gold! (or tattoo!). Brian West has been chasing the tattoo for several years, and finally found himself at the front at the right time - the end of the race. This is his story! Erik Schlimmer is no stranger to long, difficult days either on foot or on the bike. As a mountain biker, he raced at the top level in the early 1990's, then turned to long distance bike packing adventures, but not just his love of long distance hiking got in the way of his cycling - so did life and some time served in the military. He found himself going years and years without riding. Until recently, that is. In 2023 he took a tragic event in his life and turned it into a reason to embrace life - and hopped back on the bike again. Just over a year since that event, he's now doubled down on his focus and decided to pin a number on again and give racing a try. His is a compelling story of triumph, tragedy and triumph again! And while he has carved out time for his newfound joy, he also took his passion for hiking and history in the Adirondacks and has authored nine books about the area, it's trails and history. You can find them all at www.erikschlimmer.com as well as follow his current adventures and mountain bike training on instagram at @schlimmer_goes If you want to demo a mountain bike from Pivot Cycles head to their website and book a time slot at a demo near you! https://www.pivotcycles.com/en/demos-us/For winter riding and racing, we recommend Pogie Lites to help keep your hands warm. In an era that is becoming increasingly friendly to online ordering for bikes and bike parts, and increasingly hostile to brick and mortar retail stores, Clint Mongan has carved out a niche, selling high end full suspension mountain bikes to an ever growing list of clients out of a small, remote shop in an unassuming little town in south-central Iowa. He's also the owner and manager of Boone Factory Racing, supporting some of the top junior downhill racers in the country - if not world - including Kallie Stewart, winner of the 2024 Monster Downhill Race Series. Jenna Rinehart, a Midwest mountain biking icon, a competitor in the Lifetime Grand Prix (get to know her in Episode 141!) just returned from racing in Belgium at the UCI Gravel World Championships and was kind enough to stay up late (past 7 pm #jetlag) and download her European Vacation and what it was like racing in the third ever UCI Gravel World Championships. Jenna and her husband, Justin, own and operate Nicolette Bike and Ski, a shop in downtown Mankato, Minnesota. "Pay Nothing. Give Everything" is the moto of the Limestone 77.7 State of Iowa Single Speed Gravel Championship Race held on Oct. 5 of 2024. The race is promoted by CK (Chris Kyle) and is almost as grass roots as you get - except for the details - CK and friends cover the cost of the event - numbers, insurance, food and water at the aid stops and prizes- and as such, he charges zero to enter. Two courses are offered - a 37.5-mile fun ride (no scoring) and the championship 77.7-mile distance. At a moment of weakness I signed up for the championship event, and spent the summer training for it (a very hilly, long gravel race on a singlespeed bike) on my light, snappy, quick road bike on mostly 35- to 50-mile spirited group rides. If all this sounds like a recipe for success, tune in to find out! In my nervousness, I decided to bring my portable microphone along and record the day as it went along - and this is the result. A note on music - Mt. Joy's Jesus Drives an Astrovan played me into the event and stuck in my head throughout the day - so it was only proper to send you out of this episode with their 2021 version recorded live at Red Rocks - I hope you enjoy and subscribe to all their stuff on Spotify and Apple etc. then go see em in concert. Enticed by the mountain bike trails she could see underneath her skis as she ascended the lift at her local ski area, Jenna Rinehart went from carving turns on on snow to carving turns on dirt. In her early mountain biking career, she often stood atop the podium at what is now one of the oldest mountain bike races in the country: the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, as well as many other midwest mountain bike races. In 2011 she and her husband bought the Mankato, Minnesota bike shop they worked at and went from starting lines to repair stands and the showroom floor. Nearly a dozen years later Jenna found the time to jump in some local races and ultimately found herself on the starting line of Chequamegon. Her previous form had never left and she did well enough to earn a spot in the Lifetime Grand Prix. After an impressive sixth place overall in 2023, she is working hard for another top-ten finish in 2024. We talked as she has two Lifetime GP races remaining, plus the UCI Gravel World Championships in Belgium. Jenna races on a Specialized Crux on gravel and an Epic on dirt, fills her tires with Orange Seal sealant and rides for the Mazda Orange Seal Off Road team. This week we're going back to Gravel Worlds - and not to hear race highlights or the story of a big victory by gravel national champ Lauren Stephens or norwegian Simon Svendsen - this isn't even a story about the marquee 150-mile race - but this week we're talking with a couple of guys who did the Privateer 75-miler - and did they win? Nope - 19th and 20th overall - But this IS a story of friendship, of hard work and overcoming adversity - it's also a story about how cool our sport is - and how cycling can help nurture unique relationships. Today we're talking with Ted Longnecker and Jackson Webster - a couple of guys who've become friends thanks to the sport of cycling - and we're talking about their trip to Lincoln Nebraska to race the gravel seas at the 2024 Garmin Gravel Worlds. https://www.gravel-worlds.com/Thanks to Chain and Spoke Coffee for the use of their backroom studio! https://chainandspoke.com/If in the central Iowa area, join us at our weekly cyclocross practices at Renegade Cross - Tuesday nights at a variety of Des Moines parks. The core4 is an August race where no surface is left untouched - beautiful crushed stone roads (known to most of us as 'gravel'!), grassy farm access lanes, dirty level-B roads, lovely singletrack (and challenging singletrack!), limestone paths and even some much appreciated pavement to give your body a rest! And let's not leave out the cyclocross finish! Starting and finishing at the Wilson's Orchard north of Iowa City, Iowa, core4 enters it's third year, this time with some cash for the fast folks in the challenging Stone Crusher 100-miler. It's reputation as a great event, and maybe the cash purse, brought in a new level of pros: Chase Wark, Inno Zavyalov, Drew Dillman, Gabby Arnold as well as past champions like Nate Kullbom, Vanessa Curtis, Chris Hansen and more! I was there to enjoy a weekend of camping with friends, riding the lovely, yet challenging 60-mile route and talk to some of those trouncing the 100-miler. Thanks to Alex, Nate and the entire core4 crew for inviting me along - the whole experience was top notch - from packet pickup at the beautiful Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City, camping at Wilson's Orchard, the coffee and doughnuts in the morning, a creative, fun and interesting route, well stocked aid stations (which I should have stopped at at least once! #ranoutofwater), plus post-race brews, music, food and fun! I loved it all and will be back. Put it on your schedule for August 16, 2025 - and maybe we'll offer a Bike Talk with Dave discount again! (Listen next Spring and Summer!!). Patrick Coughlin and his wife Gabrielle started Team Cow on RAGBRAI more than 20 years ago, with a white bus adorned with black spots and a horn that moo's - and all the obvious puns that go along with it. After a wonder week of RAGBRAI in 2024, disaster struck the bus on it's drive back to central Iowa from the Mississippi River. Was that to be the final year of Team Cow or would the bus live on? We joined Patrick at his office in Des Moines to find out how Team Cow began, swap some RAGBRAI stories and finally learn what happened to the bus- as well as it's fate and the future of Team Cow. A Go Fund Me page has been set up for repairs to the bus. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-save-our-beloved-cow-busWe'd like to invite you to join us at the core4, where no surface is left untouched in Iowa City on August 17. Started as a 200-mile ride from West Des Moines to Arnolds Park at Lake Okoboji, Iowa more than a dozen years ago, Break the Cycle is now a series of cycling events, run relays, and other endurance events across the US, UK and Norway, which raise funds for Hope for Justice to transform lives in the fight against human trafficking. The flagship event continues to be the Break the Cycle 200, where we ride 200 miles together in a single day with one purpose: to end human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Bike Talk with Dave rode along in one of the support vehicles (with the legendary Lang Wightman) and broke out Mr. Microphone at rest stops along the way to talk with riders (and the Mayor of the final pass-through town on the route) to ask why they're riding and just how the day was going! My co-host Dee has done it for 10 years, so she had to help open the show! For information on Break the Cycle, whether to join a ride or organize a ride in your area, click on https://hopeforjustice.org/break-the-cycle/ We'd like to invite you to join us at the core4, where no surface is left untouched in Iowa City on August 17. Chris Lillig was an Iowa City cyclist who was killed by a drunk driver in 1996, but continues to be a positive influence on cycling in the Midwest today. River Products Company, a stone company where he worked, has supported the biggest races in Iowa (and the world!) for the past 23 years, first the Old Capital Criterium then the Friday Night Races at Jingle Cross and now at the Stone Crusher 100=mile race at the 2024 core4 - a race which covers all surfaces, from pavement to crushed stone to singletrack. Having never met Chris myself, I was curious who he was and why his name continues to be a major part of some of the biggest events in the area. Enter Greg Duethman and Ken Lefler, two long-time cyclists and good friends of Chris. They recount what made Chris such a special human and strong cyclist. They then help us understand why it's important to Chris' family and friends to keep his memory alive and support bike racing to this day, nearly thirty years after his death. What can you say about JP? Beyond his cycling accolades, which are many, words like kind, friendly, thoughtful and generous sit right next to competitive, driven, adventurous, curious and... maybe a little crazy! His first go on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route was on a tandem with his wife of many adventures; Tracey. After more than 25 years of racing, including a dozen times up the Iditarod Trail, seven times down the spine of the Rockies on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, winning the first Silk Road Mountain Bike Race, he now gives back through the industry of Jay Petervary! Consulting, coaching, weekend courses on bikepacking and winter camping, and hosts both a winter fatbike race in Fat Pursuit and now a community-centered gravel race and ride in his hometown of Victor Idaho; the Teton Valley Backyard Rally on July 6, 2024. Filled with millions of stories from his endless miles of travel by bicycle, JP was kind enough to carve out some time to share some of them with us. www.jaypetervary.com www.tetonvalleygravel.com www.fatpursuit.com oin Dave at the core4, where no surface is left untouched in Iowa City on August 17. Danielle Ravnikar had an unlikely road to professional cycling, finding her way through dance to the starting line of the Elite Woman's race at the 2024 Unbound. Would her time on the sidelines of the Minnesota Vikings as an NFL Cheerleader be enough to get her to the finish line of her first 200-mile gravel race? Only time would tell. Danielle Ravnikar is a member of the Mazda Orange Seal cycling team and was kind enough to spend some time on a call to talk about her journey to the starting line in Emporia, Kansas, and then her struggles to the finish line. Recently, Cade popped into my life for a minute, thanks to a friend having a birthday party and Matt Zimmer bringing his teammate to said party on an e-bike. "It was a rest day,,," Cade is one of many weapons on the formidable Project Echelon Cycling Team and at a recent weekend of racing along the Mississippi River, Cade took 3/4 wins, throwing down 1700+ watts in the process. It was a good time to have the multi-time national champion on. I thought I'd send out Bike Month by joining some friends on a 100-mile singlespeed cruiser ride (full disclosure: I couldn't spend the whole day riding, so I joined in for a pile of miles in the morning!). In the spirit of Bike Month, I brought along Mr. Microphone and asked people what cycling has give them, but the episode begins with the swearing in of the Nut Checking Crew - vital to the success of this ride. We close out the show with an impromptu recording of a good cycling friend's daughter, Lauren Igou, who was playing at Captain Roy's, the final trailside bar of the 100-mile ride. I hope you enjoy my conversations with cyclists from around the Midwest on what cycling as brought to their lives (and we ask about their bikes too!). Bikeiowa.com sponsors the event as well as publishes all the events of Bike Month. Bikeiowa.com is your spot for all local and regional rides and events throughout the entire year, as well as important news and information! Several months ago I got an email from a guy in Lacross Wisconsin - James Longhurst. He asked if I'd like to read his book on the history of bicycles sharing the American road. It's called Bike Battles. Recently, he was kind enough to carve out some time during finals week at UW-LaCross, to discuss his book Bike Battles: A History of Sharing The American Road. Thanks to James for sharing his book with us today - I really enjoyed it - and I also really enjoyed diving deeper into it with James - and I would encourage you to as well! It's available at the University of Washington Press at www.washington.edu/uspress If you have any interest in the history of the bike in America - this is a great book! And also remember if you want to discover some incredible gravel riding in the driftless region, which includes southwest Wisconsin around LaCrosse, as well as parts of Minnesota and Iowa, just go to driftlesscycling.com. Kate Strom, a passionate mountain biker and talented graphic designer found a way to combine the two as a custom cycling apparel designer. After working for a small custom kit company for a few years, ventured off to start her own company with a conscience: Radical Custom Cycling Apparel. Her goal: Good looking, great fitting and performing cycling clothing that is easy for the customer, affordable and environmentally friendly. What she's come up with is a no-minimum (correct... no minimum), ordered and shipped by and too each team member (no more boxes of kits on the living room floor... While we should be celebrating moms 365.25 days per year, we do have one day we set aside to really recognize how awesome moms are. And cycling moms - they're like regular moms, only better! So what better than to, not only invite some awesome cyclists who are also awesome moms, but also invite another awesome mom cyclist and journalist to lead the discussion? What we've got here is gravel pro Marisa Boaz, ultra cyclist Deanne Herr and my own partner in this game of life, Dee Mable all together with the interview being led by a talented cyclist, mom and local news anchor (She's a pretty big deal) Lisa Carponelli. It was an honor to be in the room with the four of them! I really just tried to shut up and listen (but they did pull me into the conversation now and again!). Matt Zimmer, Project Echelon rider for a good many years and I wanted to get his opinion on the state of road racing in the U.S. We met for a beer on the patio of a lovely local brewery: (Either Or - It's actually a restaurant and nice bar - but it's owned by the people who own a local brewery: Lua - so I call it a brewery... I guess it's Either a restaurant Or a brewery.... the name says it all). Anyway - Matt and I had a great conversation about bikes - we hope you enjoy! In it's 15 years, the Garmin Gravel Worlds has become one of the biggest gravel events on the U.S. calendar. Boasting a heritage of champions that range from Trans-Iowa alumni to World Tour cyclists - and all without huge prize purses - until now. Recently, a $30,000 prize purse was announced for the elite mens and women's races - but along with that, they will also be donating another $30,000 to charities AND have welcomed Hannah Shell into the Gravel Family in an initiative to celebrate the back of the pack, as much as the front in their new F2L (First to Last) program. I invited Jason on, not only to talk about their exciting news, but also the continuing evolution of the sport of gravel cycling. We'd encourage you to register early for Gravel Worlds - and when you do, you can get 10% off your registration fee by using the code: biketalkwithdave at checkout. And when you do Bike Talk with Dave will ALSO donate 10% of your fee to the 80-35 BMX/Iowa Bicycle Coalition effort to build an indoor Olympic-quality BMX track in Central Iowa. Just sign up at www.gravel-worlds.com today and use that biketalkwithdave code to save some $$ and help a local group support cycling! If you need a BANDito Sling to help carry your bike through the mud, you can order at BIKEIOWA.com and be ready for all those muddy B-roads! https://bikeiowa.store/products/bandito-slingIf you'd like to donate to the feasability study, managed by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, click this link and help support the growth of our sport! https://iowabicyclecoalition.org/bmx-skills-hub/We would love it if you would consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. If you've been tuning in through this past winter, you have likely heard of my big scary adventure coming up next winter - what will be my first fat bike winter ultra at the Arrowhead 135 - a 135-mile adventure through the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota in late January - it starts in International Falls and is known for it's bitter cold temperatures and deep snow - and while it's not always cold and snowy, as in this past edition (tune in to our conversation with Cate Coward in episode 114!) - but I will say - you'd better be prepared for both! One of the reasons this race is scary for me, is that I'm no fat biker - I don't yet own one, nor have I really spent any time on one - and though it's spring and every week is getting warmer and warmer as we head into summer - it's high time I start thinking about what I'm going to ride next winter! So I dialed up my mentor, Steve McGuire - and who better to talk fat bikes? Steve is not only a veteran of many winter ultras including the Arrowhead 135, Actif Epica, Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational - not only all of that - but he also leads the Design, build ride program at the University of Iowa - a cool class for both engineering and art students to who do just that - design, build then ride their own hand crafted steed. So Steve's not only been riding fat bikes for years and years - but has also been playing with the design - so if you're interested at all in your own winter fat biking, bike design or... well... Iowa Women's Basketball - then I hope you enjoy this conversation with Steve McGuire! Since starting this podcast more than two years ago, I've wanted to talk to a team that had completed the Cape Epic together - Well, a couple months ago I saw that good friend of the podcast Hannah Shell was headed to South Africa with a friend of hers Starla Teddergreen - so I immediately shot her a note asking if the two of them would come on when they got home from the other side of the world and she enthusiastically agreed! Fast forward to April and the three of us found a time to hop on a call together to talk about their experience in the 8-stage mountain bike race. Which is awesome - but even more awesome was getting to know Starla - which leads me to the very buried lead - Starla, who's raced professionally for nearly two decades - was recently diagnosed with MS - yet overcame the challenges of what can be a debilitating disease - to race in one of the hardest events on earth - she's quite an amazing role model for women - really all of us - who face difficult challenges and roll on in spite of them - and finding creative ways to overcome the extra challenges they may present - Really - it was a treat to talk Cape Epic with Hannah and Starla - but I also really hope you enjoy getting to know Starla and all that she's doing to encourage women around the world to get active and stay active! I really appreciate both Hannah and Starla for making the time to come on this week - I hope you enjoyed their stories and friendship! I'd encourage all of you to follow them on socials - as well as Starla's organization Distance to Empty! I'll put links in the show notes! And I did look to see when I had Hannah on - it was October 2021, episode 41, when we talked about the state of gravel racing and the first ever UCI Gravel World Championships - plus she and her husband Jake were on last summer to talk about the Gravel Camp they led in Lincoln Nebraska prior to the Garmin Gravel Worlds - that was episode 66 - You should definitely download and enjoy them both! Josh Sprague is as much an addict to endurance sports as the rest of us, and you know as well as anyone when a piece of equipment just isn't quite right. With weekends filled with adventure races, ultra marathons and long mountain bike rides, Josh just couldn't find the right hydration pack, so he built one. He liked it so much, he and his wife made the decision to dive in and founded Orange Mud and started producing what they believe to be the best, most comfortable hydrations packs on the market! Twelve years later they continue to create and produce a variety of hydration packs as well as a growing line of products for endurance athletes. As a full-time working couple with kids, a house and everything that comes with that, it's a challenge to pick and choose what events to attend throughout the year - but this one comes easy. It's not just a gravel race, it's a weekend long festival of camping, food, music, beers, bike rides and great West Texas hospitality! (and a few snakes) This was our second year (Dee and Dave's) at the Rattlesnake Gravel Grind and of course, Mr. Microphone came with us. After the race we talked with race winners Joe Laverick and Lauren Stephens, second place Chris Mehlman as well as last year's champion Justin McQuerry and first timer Inno Zavyalov. Dee got in the action with Mr. Microphone and talked with second year racer, 13-year-old Bennett Rogers and Ryan Mable who finished his first over-100K gravel race! And we couldn't leave without sharing some of the rich music played throughout the weekend! Be sure and dive into the weekend of fun by heading to www.rattlesnakegravelgrind.bike and follow the ramblings from inside the cycling world by a guy inside the cycling world: Joe Laverick https://www.joelaverick.com/We would love it if you would consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Sherry Ott's journey - riding her bicycle from state capitol to state capitol, began with her father, Lee, in 1984. In nearly 30 years he connected 23 capitols on foot. Fast forward another almost 10 years and a pandemic later, Sherry would pick up the project, but this time on bicycle. As a travel blogger, adventure and travel isn't new to Sherry - however an adventurous project like this, inside the United States, is. Sherry has been traveling the world, writing, photographing and vlogging since dropping out of the corporate nine to five almost twenty years ago - but her travels have taken her abroad - and the pandemic, the bicycle and her father's project are causing her to explore the lower 48 in a way she never imagined. Tune in to hear the story of the 40-year-long Capitol to Capitol project! Tuesday Vander Weide not only enjoys racing her bikes, whether on gravel, cyclocross, singletrack or on the road, she's also worked for years at her local bike shop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and recently landed at job at one of the largest cycling companies in the world, the U.S. based SRAM! Being International Women's Month, I thought it was the perfect time to hear her story, not just how she came into the sport, but how it's been as a woman working in a predominantly man's world. We had a great conversation and she's got some awesome ideas on how to welcome, not just women, but all new cyclists into the sport! You ever question your own choice of tires? Me too. Especially on gravel. How wide? How much tread? How much pressure? Tubeless? So many choices, so little time. So at the OG of winter gravel races, CIRREM (a 16-year-old 64-mile hilly gravel race in the south central Iowa town of Cumming the final Saturday in February) Mr. Microphone came out after the race and we talked to people about their tires and how they chose them, and a bit about the race as well. In fact, we start with the two founders Kent Carlson and Jed Gammel, and talked about the origin of this long-time gravel classic. Jon Harp discovered competitive cycling as a teen in Chicagoland and made his way to the front of the echelon even securing a spot on a professional team in Europe. For reasons we'll let him tell, he hung up his bike and came back to the States. Eventually, however, he eventually discovered the joys of cycling on remote gravel roads, and loved it so much he was inspired to start a gravel and dirt focused team: The Mazda/Orange Seal Off Road Cycling Team. Together we dive into his history in the sport and the development of the now international team of unique and talented riders. Kate Coward's name is synonymous with winter ultras, especially on a fat bike. She's finished and won the Arrowhead 135 on bike, but also completed what is called one of the 50 hardest races on earth on both skis and foot. She's also won in her first go of the Iditarod Trail Invitational ITI350 as well as the Tuscobia 160 and Actif Epica. She recently finished fourth overall and first among the women in the warm 2024 Arrowhead 135, notable because Bike Talk with Dave regular and Mentor to Dave in his own Arrowhead attempt next year, Steve McGuire had to withdraw at mile 27. The day after the event concluded this year, both Kate and Steve hopped on a call to download this years especially challenging event. The lessons offered between the two of them are priceless to anyone who has any type of challenge ahead of them - on or off the bike! The Rattlesnake Gravel Grind, March 21-24, 2024, is a weekend of gravel riding and racing in and around the west Texas town of Sweetwater. Camping, music, great food and incredible gravel routes make for an entire weekend event centered around Saturday's main event: A 30-, 70-, and 105-mile gravel race. We talked with Race Director David King, as well as the 2023 champion Justin McQuerry and British pro rider Joe Laverick about this year's race and what to expect. Carina Hamel and her husband Robby Ringer sought to create a reusable stainless steel water bottle built specifically to fit bike water bottle cages and give cyclists the flow they want. They worked with a NASA engineer and spent more than a year on design and the result was Bivo - a high performance water bottle made for bikes! After cutting back on plastic myself for a variety of reasons, I reached out to see what this bottle was like and invite Carina on to talk about the who, what and why of this new product. For more information on Bivo follow them on instagram or go directly to the website at www.drinkbivo.com. Ian Boswell, aka Boz, spent several years racing at the highest level in the UCI World Tour with the likes of Bradly Wiggins, Chris Froome and Garaint Thomas on Team Sky. After nearly a decade in Europe, he made the decision to retire from road racing, move to rural Vermont and settle in with his young family. He kept a foot in the door of cycling and started a podcast: Breakfast with Boz as well as working at Wahoo Fitness, representing the company at gravel race expos around the U.S. and at one point, decided to bring his bike and line up in the event - and his legs did not fail him. In 2021 he and Laurens Ten Dam raced into Emporia Kansas at Unbound and Boz found himself standing on the top step of the podium. He now enjoys a balanced life racing in the events he chooses, representing Wahoo, publishing his podcast and enjoying time with his family in Vermont. One of the races he enjoys, and helped grow, is Gravel Locos. Fabian Sarralta, Director of that race, was a guest on Bike Talk with Dave (Episode 57) so I was curious what Boz's connection was with the Hico, Texas race. Steve McGuire - my guide and mentor for the 2025 Arrowhead 135 Winter Fat Bike Ultra - recently returned from the oddly snowless Tuscobia 160 Winter Ultra and wanted to share the lessens he learned from this winter's event. The Tuscobia 160 starts in Rice Lake Wisconsin and follows the Tuscobia Trail through the Chequamgon/Nicolet National Forest the last weekend in December. Both a 160- as well as an 80-mile event are offered for fat bikes, skis or on foot. Find out more at www.tuscobiawinterultra.com. Jay Kennedy swung his years of experience in the hospitality industry into a business that combined that with his passion for cycling - the Thirsty Pigs Mobile Event Company. With Thirsty Pigs, he does everything from planning and leading multi-day cycling trips (such as the Marathon and Key West rides in Florida this February!) as well offering complete event planning services for corporate events, reunions, social gatherings, bicycling rides, weddings, tail-gates, birthday parties and more. Thirsty Pigs works closely with a Des Moines area bar, patio and music venue situated on the Des Moines River - Captain Roy's, which is owned and operated by a long-time cycling friend and cycling community supporter (and incredible musician) Wade Thompson. The three of us met at Wades over the Holidays and talked about Thirsty Pigs, Roy's and so much more... like music! (I did manage to sneak in some music from Wade's band; A Complete Disaster w/ Mike Vallely (yes, the skateboarder!), Eli Clark, Paul Thompson and Wade Thompson). Connect with Jay and book a trip or event with Thirsty Pigs at www.thirstypigs.com and give them a follow on instagram and facebook! And stop in Captain Roy's next time you're riding through Des Moines! www.captainroys.comConsider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform.
