In this first-ever look at the secret inner workings of an Arab security service, Katz tells the story of Jordan's General Intelligence Department, or GID, the masters of human intelligence on the espionage battlefields of the Middle East, who proved pivotal and crucial go-to allies of the CIA and America's other intelligence agencies in the war against ISIS and the war on terror. With the revealing and intimate insight of the intelligence officers who fought ISIS, No Shadows in the Desert is a rare glimpse into how a strategic partnership helped change how terrorism is fought in the Middle East and beyond. Samuel M. Katz is the New York Times Best Selling co-author of Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi (St. Martin's Press, 2013); an excerpt from the book was featured in the August 2013 edition of Vanity Fair. His book The Ghost Warriors: Inside Israel's Undercover War on Suicide Terror covered Israel's undercover counterterrorist units and their role in stopping the suicide bombers in the second intifada, and was published in February 2016 by Penguin-Random House/Caliber. He is the co-author of the National and Los Angeles Times best-selling Harpoon: Inside The Covert War against International Terrorism's Money Masters. Beirut Rules was optioned by Sony, and Chasing Shadows continues to generate interest and awareness by way of several recent interviews with Fred Burton. https://www.officialfredburton.com/ Our CHASING SHADOWS feature project is a timely story rooted in the bestselling book, which explores this fascinating high-profile unsolved case from the 1970s. When author Fred Burton and I connected via social media, we began to uncover new details based on handwritten journals my father kept, and have now brought the story into the present day by way of this deeply personal connection.” – Ted Andre Book Synopsis: On a warm Saturday night in July 1973 in Bethesda, Maryland, a gunman stepped out from behind a tree and fired five point-blank shots into Joe Alon, an unassuming Israeli Air Force pilot, and family man. Alon's sixteen-year-old neighbor, Fred Burton, was deeply shocked by this crime that rocked his sleepy suburban neighborhood. As it turned out, Alon wasn't just a pilot – he was a high-ranking military official with intelligence ties. The assassin was never found and the case was closed. In 2007, Fred Burton – who had since become a State Department counterterrorism special agent – reopened the case. In Chasing Shadows, Burton spins a gripping tale of the secret agents, double-dealings, terrorists, and heroes he encounters as he chases leads around the globe in an effort to solve this decades-old murder. From swirling dogfights over Egypt and Hanoi to gun battles on the streets of Beirut, this action-packed thriller looks into the dark heart of the Cold War to show how power is used, misused, and sold to the most convenient bidder. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support

On 9/11 of last year the US Mission in Benghazi, Libya, an isolated ad hoc outpost, was attacked. The small security team from the diplomatic security service, was no match for large numbers of jihadist forces that would attack, in what has been called “a perfect worst case scenario.”This was the first time that a US diplomat had been killed since 1988, in Pakistan. Perhaps in another time it would have brought respect for the heroics of the men who valiantly fought back to save the mission and the Ambassador. Perhaps it would have brought a legitimate investigation of what happened and how we might learn from such attacks.Instead, like almost everything else today, it’s simply been a catalyst for bitter partisanship, for political opportunism and the continuing efforts of some, to find anything to attack the President and the administration. In that haze we’ve lost sight of what really happened and why it still matters. Two national security experts, Fred Burton and Samuel Katz, provide the first full scale account in their book Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi. My conversation with Burton and Katz:
