What really makes great storytelling work in the modern thriller genre? In episode 169, I sit down with two powerhouse thriller authors — Brad Thor and Ward Larsen in a conversation about COLD ZERO, their latest thriller. Centered on shared experience, military service, discipline, and a relentless respect for the craft, our conversation explores why authenticity matters in thrillers and how deep genre knowledge — from tradecraft to aviation — creates books that feel cinematic without losing emotional weight. What really stood out to me is how aggressively Brad and Ward lean into collaboration as a competitive advantage. These are two seasoned writers who didn't just co-author a novel, they merged similar work ethics, complementary skills, and a shared belief that the best stories come from trust, humility, and putting in the work. On this episode of the daily, I'm interviewing, mystery, author and thriller author Sonny Hudson. He tells us all about his books. He's currently written five books. Four out of those books is a series based on the Jessica Jansen novels and he's currently working on a sixth book. You can find all of his books through Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Noble online. And also, Amazon. You could also find his books to Kindle Unlimited and also Kindle. He has them in Hardback covers paperback and Kindle. His Website is: sonnyhudsonauthor.I've spent my entire career in the technology industry, and while that may seem like it's a million miles away from writing fiction, it was actually a job that I had back in ancient times (a.k.a, the 90's) that sparked my interest. At the time I was working for a Fortune 10 company providing pre-sales technical support to our (thousands) of sales people around the globe, and one of my team's responsibilities was producing a bi-monthly newsletter. This was not the typical little 2-3 page newsletter: each issue was between 36-56 pages. Writing and co-editing articles for this newsletter quickly became my favorite part of the job, and everything else quickly started to feel like an interruption of my writing. Each issue was distributed to approximately 5,000 people, and it was consistently recognized and awarded for its excellence.Once the writing bug was unleashed, I wanted to write a full-length novel and finally accomplished that goal in 2008 when I wrote and published 'Let the Truth Be Told', a political-action thriller that readers compared to David Baldacci, Robert Ludlum, Brad Thor, and Tom Clancy. I was very happy with the reviews and resultant sales, not to mention the learning opportunities as I made my first foray into the book world.I currently reside in Williamsburg, VA and I'm a member of James River Writers (Richmond, VA) and actively participate in their workshops and learning activities to improve my writing and industry knowledge. I continue to pursue my writing and am passionate about creating more stories and characters, and I'm currently working on the outlines for two new manuscripts. The first book in my new ‘Jessica Jansen Thriller' series, ‘The Murder Game', was released in December, 2022 and became a hit! The second book in the series, ‘Glitz. Glamour. Murder.' was released in the fall of 2023, and that was followed by ‘Blood & Vengeance' in September, 2024. My latest release, ‘Divine Deception - Blind Faith. False Hope' will be released on Tuesday, November 18th, 2025 for hardback & paperback; Kindle & KU versions hit the market on Tuesday, October 21st. If you're a fan of crime thrillers by authors like David Baldacci, James Patterson, Lincoln Child, J.D. Robb, and Stuart Woods, you'll likely love the ‘Jessica Jansen Thriller' series!

Kyle Mills, a New York Times Bestselling author of 9 Vince Flynn novels, joins me to celebrate the release of his first book since he handed over the reins to the Mitch Rapp series to Don Bentley.Kyle picked up the pen again and dusted off a familiar character in Salam "Fade" al-Fayed, bringing back a beloved character from Kyle's early days as an author. FADE IN is his second book featuring Fade, and promises to bring more action and thrills. Fans are very excited to see Kyle bring back Fade, and I can tell you this book delivers in more ways than one!Brad Thor described the book as "Wall-to-wall action".Kyle grew up like a military brat, as his father was an FBI Agent and that meant the Mills family lived all over. Kyle has spent time in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Wyoming, and even London. His experience in life as a child of an FBI Agent is obvious through his retelling of special operations, detective work, and intelligence through his novels for the Vince Flynn estate, and now in his second book in the Fade series, FADE IN.Kyle spent time in corporate America, especially banking, before branching out into writing. He has several bestselling books, to include FADE, 9 Vince Flynn novels, and certainly to be a bestseller in, FADE IN.From the pros and cons of A.I., to slapping Mike Tyson in a bar, this episode has it all!Find more about Kyle Mills, Fade In, and more at Kylemills.comBookmarks:5:00 - Authors Equity: A New Endeavor10:00 - A.I.32:00 - Some New Characters36:00 - Mitch Rapp41:00 - Slapping Mike Tyson
