We are all vulnerable to digital surveillance, as there's little protection to prevent our phones from getting hacked. Mercenary spyware products like Pegasus are powerful and sophisticated, marketed to government clients around the world. Cybersecurity expert Ron Deibert tells IDEAS, "the latest versions can be implanted on anyone's device anywhere in the world and as we speak, there is literally no defence against it.” Deibert is the founder of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, a group of tech-savvy researchers who dig into the internet, looking for the bad actors in the marketplace for high-tech surveillance and disinformation. In his new book, Chasing Shadows, he shares notorious cases he and his colleagues have worked on and reveals the dark underworld of digital espionage and subversion.

In this episode of The Franciska Show, host Franciska discusses the complexities and behind-the-scenes efforts involved in helping women, known as agunot, who are unable to obtain a religious divorce (get) from their husbands. The episode features interviews with Jennifer Lankin, Interim CEO at ORA (Organization for the Resolution of Agunot), and Ezra Stone, a private investigator who specializes in tracking down recalcitrant husbands who refuse to grant their wives a get. Jennifer shares her journey into this work and explains ORA's community-focused approach to addressing get refusal. Ezra offers insights from his fieldwork, describing some of the challenges and strategies involved in locating and pressuring these husbands to comply with religious and legal obligations. The episode encapsulates the importance of community response, the use of private investigators in protracted cases, and the critical role that social culture and public pressure play in resolving these deeply rooted issues.   00:00 Introduction and Announcements 01:50 Special Guests: Ezra Stone and Jennifer Lankin 02:12 Jennifer Lincoln's Journey and Insights 03:54 Ezra Stone: The Private Investigator 05:57 The Role of Private Investigators in Get Refusal Cases 10:19 Challenges in Tracking Down Recalcitrant Spouses 11:36 Case Study: The Search for Naftali Shabani 22:24 Unexpected Encounters and Travel Stories 22:56 Investigative Techniques and Challenges 23:08 The Case of the Recalcitrant Brother 26:59 Legal and Ethical Considerations 27:56 Creative PI Strategies 29:02 The Big Daddy of Get Refusers 36:56 Social Media and Influencers 39:38 Security Issues in the Jewish Community 44:16 Closing Remarks and Reflections   www.instagram.com/oraagunot   About our Guests: Ezra Stone is a licensed private investigator in both the USA and Israel, who specializes in sensitive cases within the Orthodox Jewish community. The sunset is impossible to grasp. One moment, it's glowing—golden and brilliant. The next, it's gone, slipping beyond the horizon. No matter how much you wish it would remain, darkness quickly takes over. Welcome to The Daily. We go through the bible verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, every single day. Our text today is Ecclesiastes 6:12. For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow?— Ecclesiastes 6:12 That's life. Life isn't just short—it's fleeting, like a shadow moving across the ground. We chase after success, wealth, and comfort, hoping they'll bring us meaning. But no matter how much we grab, they slip through our fingers. Because shadows have no substance. They look real, but they aren't. They shift, stretch, and disappear with time. The things we think will satisfy—bigger paychecks, more recognition, the next big achievement—often leave us empty. They promise security but deliver uncertainty. They look solid but fade when the light changes. But here's the truth: where there's a shadow, there's light. And that's what we're meant to chase. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Instead of running after things that vanish, we're called to run toward Him—the only One who never fades. So, what are you chasing? Are you grasping at shadows or reaching for the Light? #LifeIsShort, #ChasingLight, #FaithOverFleeting ASK THIS: What shadows have you been chasing in your life? How have temporary pursuits left you feeling empty? What does John 8:12 reveal about where true fulfillment is found? How can you intentionally pursue the Light of Christ today? DO THIS: Spend five minutes today reflecting on what you're chasing—then ask God to shift your focus to what truly lasts. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me stop grasping at what fades and start pursuing what lasts. Draw me closer to Your light so I may walk in truth. Amen. PLAY THIS: Chasing Rebels.

Mitchell Frederick Ft. Destiny - Chasing Shadows (Original Mix) Fell too deep, now I can't breathe, Caught in your lies, but I still need you, please. I wear this mask, but you see through it, Love the mess, but hate how I ruin it. Chasing shadows, running from the truth, Tangled thoughts, can't escape you. In the dark, your touch feels so right, But when you leave, I drown in the night. It's just a game, but I feel alive, Lost in your arms, but I can't survive. Need your love, but hate the pain, Can't you see? We're drowning in the rain. Toxic love, but I crave the thrill, You break me down, yet I want you still. Tangled up in sheets of regret, You whisper lies, but I can't forget. Fading away, but you pull me in, Chasing your touch like where I begin. I know I'm broken, but I won't let go, Caught in your web, it's all I know. In your arms, I fall apart, But still, I crave the chaos in your heart. It's just a game, but I feel alive, Lost in your arms, but I can't survive. Need your love, but hate the pain, Can't you see? We're drowning in the rain. Toxic love, but I crave the thrill, You break me down, yet I want you still. I hate myself for loving you, But I can't stop, I can't break through. Every touch is poison, a dream, But in the dark, you're all I need. Tangled in lies, but you're the truth I seek, Drowning in love, feeling so weak. Want you close, but I'm scared to feel, This love's a nightmare, but it's real.

Using the metaphor of a shadow the author of Hebrews exhorts Jewish believers to stop chasing the things that are only the vague outlines of the real thing we have in Jesus. Using the Old Testament, he points to the priesthood as the foretaste of Jesus, the tabernacle for the throne room of God, the law for the Word in flesh, and the old covenant promises with the new covenant of eternal life in Jesus. But these shadows are not limited to the ancient Jew. We see modern expressions of them even today. Chasing shadows fuels anxiety, but the good news is that we can chase Jesus instead.

The discussion covers the events leading up to the murder, the investigation, the evidence presented at trial, and the subsequent appeal process. The hosts explore the moral implications of the choices made by the individuals involved, particularly focusing on the relationship dynamics and the consequences of infidelity. —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Takeaways Avis Banks was a dedicated teacher and soon-to-be mother. Keyon Pittman's behavior raised suspicions during the investigation. The murder scene was staged to look like a burglary. Avis's family had concerns about Keyon's behavior leading up to her death. Keyon had multiple relationships outside of his engagement to Avis. The investigation revealed Keyon's unfaithfulness and secrets. Carla Hughes was a significant figure in Keyon's life during the investigation. Emotional responses to trauma can vary greatly among individuals. The police found gunshot residue on Keyon, but it was inconclusive. The case highlights the complexities of love, betrayal, and loss. Karla Hughes borrowed a gun from her cousin shortly before the murder. The gun was returned empty, raising suspicions. Patrick Nash and his father sought legal advice before approaching the police. The police initially did not suspect Carla of involvement in the murder. Evidence against Carla included cell phone records and matching shoe prints. Karla was charged with accessory after the fact before the charges escalated to murder. The trial revealed inconsistencies in witness testimonies. Karla's defense attempted to shift blame to Keyon, but evidence was against her. The appeal process is complicated by the nature of the evidence presented at trial.
