Graham E. Fuller specializes in long-range forecasting of geopolitics. In fact, Fuller is a former vice chair of the National Intelligence Council at CIA responsible for long-term forecasting. He also served as a CIA operations officer overseas for two decades, with much of his time being spent in the Middle East. He served as the CIA Station Chief in Kabul and is the author of such books as A World Without Islam (2010) and The Future of Political Islam (2003). He is a noted analyst on Islamist movements and continues to write extensively on issues pertaining to U.S. foreign policy, the Middle East, and geopolitics. Graham joined me for a conversation about Assad's overthrow and what it means for various geopolitical players including the U.S. Russia, Iran, Turkey, and the Gulf states. We ended up having a more broad discussion that led into many different areas including: - Explaining the phenomena that has come to be known as "Political Islam" sans the tabloid clickbait that has unfortunately something attended the non-academic literature on the topic - Graham's critique of John Mearsheimer's Realist school of thought in regards to international relations. Graham believes there is great value in Mearsheimer's analysis, but makes the case that Realism as a school of thought is too often mechanistic and deterministic in how it perceives the course of geopolitical trends - The U.S.'s endless "Search for Enemies" and the consequences that approach to foreign policy creates, in relation to, for example, the U.S.-China relationship - The question of HTS and its leader Abu Muhammed al-Jolani; how will the govern?; HTS's administration of Idlib; how al-Jolani is, in the immediate, approaching the West and Israel - Israel and Turkey's strikes in Syria; Turkey's geopolitical concerns over the Kurds in Syria; the far-right elements that have been unleashed in Israel, especially since the October 7th, 2023 attack and how that effects both Israel and the Middle East more broadly - And much, much more!
Retired CIA Operative and government whistleblower Gary Berntsen reveals the results of a four-year investigation into election tampering. His team's conclusion: Enemies of the United States including Venezuela, Cuba, China and Serbia have been determining the results of elections in the U.S. since 2006 through the use of electronic systems that they have developed. Using these systems, they now manipulate the results of elections in 72 countries around the world.Gary Berntsen is arguably the most decorated CIA operations officer in modern times. He is the man who recruited and led the combined CIA-Special Forces teams that helped overthrow the Taliban after the attack of 9/11 and had Osama bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda fighters trapped in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan. He also served as a CIA Station Chief in three counties; led the Hezbollah working group; investigated the East Africa embassy bombings in 1998; and stopped various terrorist attacks around the world. Gary and his team are now going public with a criminal investigation that will shock the world. The evidence they have assembled is described in a new book by Ralph Pezzullo called "Stolen Elections: The Plot to Destroy Global Democracy" published by Skyhorse Publishing.Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com
Two dozen prisoners spread throughout seven countries are free after the largest prisoner swap between the West and Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met the government jet as it arrived on U.S. soil when Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and Alsu Kurmasheva stepped onto the tarmac ending a month of highly secret negotiation that involved several governments across the globe. Three-time CIA Station Chief, Senior Executive Clandestine Services Officer, and FOX News Contributor Dan Hoffman explains why getting so many countries on board with the swap was such an extraordinary achievement for the United States. With President Joe Biden suspending his 2024 reelection campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris being the presumptive Democratic nominee, the fundamentals of the race haven't really changed. Elections in the U.S. are usually decided by a few battleground states with persuadable voters pushing one candidate over the edge. However, with the 2024 race being anything but traditional, will the shake-up have any impact on the outcome? Co-Director of the FOX News Poll, member of the FOX News Decision Desk, and political science professor at the University of Texas, Daron Shaw weighs in on what the state of the race looks like following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and the Vice President announcing her campaign. Summary John Mullen (LinkedIn) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss his life and career. He was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal. What You'll Learn Intelligence How John was recruited Life as an adrenaline addict in the CIA Case officers vs. entrepreneurs How China spies on corporate America Reflections Atlantic vs. Pacific outlook Quantum And much, much more… Episode Notes The Pacific Theater of WWII was imprinted on John Mullen as a young boy. He grew up in Seattle on the West Coast and had family members who remembered Boeing factories under camouflaged nets. He had two family members who were killed in that theater in the 1940s. John went on to have a stellar CIA career - but one that always had an eye to the East. He went on the become the Assistant Director for Asia and the Pacific, leading all clandestine activity across this huge region, and spent time as a CIA Station Chief in the Far East. He has since co-founded his own firm and is currently engaged in protecting innovation at Strider Technologies as an Executive Vice President. Ever wondered what it'd be like to join the CIA or to leave it to work in corporate America? I have a feeling John might be able to help… And… Business intelligence, competitive intelligence, product intelligence, workforce intelligence: in case you haven't noticed – intel is everywhere these days! Quote of the Week Honestly, in my 30 years, at CIA, there were probably less than two handfuls of days. I woke up and wasn't excited about going to work. – John Mullen. Consequences by David Grantham provides a unique and fascinating window into the nuts and bolts of OSI counterintelligence operations. You won't be disappointed.”– Fred Burton, author of Beirut Rules: The Murder of a CIA Station Chief and Hezbollah's War Against America In 2020, ISIS followers are being encouraged to use COVID-19 to sicken Westerners. An ISIS supporter attacked a Naval base in Corpus Christi, Texas. Iran and the United States exchanged blows in Iraq. We are still living in the long shadow of the Iraq War. In 2006, David Grantham was fresh out of college and serving as a counterintelligence officer with the elite and secretive Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Iraq was veering toward civil war. The U.S. military desperately needed better on-the-ground intelligence to turn the tide. Grantham found himself in Kuwait and Afghanistan, then at Iraq's infamous American prison, Camp Bucca. Not only was Bucca the breeding ground for the Islamic State, it was in southern Iraq, where America's deadly fight with Iran was an open secret. Consequences is both a riveting, behind-the-scenes look at intelligence operations at the height of the Iraq war, and a charming and sobering story of one man's journey through the pleasures and consequences that come with wartime intelligence. ..
Ukrainian President Zelensky delivered a powerful message to a joint session of U.S. Congress Wednesday morning. Zelensky invoked the memories of America's darkest moments. "Remember Pearl Harbor," he said, "Remember September 11th." Death from sky visited on Americans just as death from the sky is now being visited on the Ukrainian people. He showed a gut wrenching video showing charred bodies, fleeing refugees, and bombs, one after another destroying Ukrainian cities and killing civilians. He praised President Biden for the help he's provided so far but then implored him to do more. If not a "no fly zone" then more air defense systems, more planes, more weapons to fight the Russian aggressors. We discuss the takeaways from Zelensky's speech. We'll also listen to an excerpt from our talk with the former chief of the Ukrainian Air-force about what the Ukrainians really need. And finally, we'll listen to the comments of the former top C.I.A. official about Vladimir Putin's murderous past and what that can mean for the future of Ukraine.GUESTS:Dan Hoffman (@danielhoffmanDC), Ret. Scott Uehlinger had a 2-decade long career with the Central Intelligence Agency. This included 2 terms as the CIA Station Chief in Moldova. In this interview with Greg Kelly, Uehlinger provides unique insight into the war raging in Ukraine. Uehlinger also gets blunt about his time in the Agency, including where the CIA plays politics. A Navy veteran, Uehlinger details how a career that began in the military grew to a career in intelligence. Scott Uehlinger (Retired CIA Station Chief, National Security Expert) discusses some of his personal ties to the area of Russia and Ukraine and his thoughts about what's happening at this time in that area of the world?
President Zelensky is having one powerful performance after another in defense of his country, Ukraine. He's refusing to back down even as Russian troops close in on his Capitol and the city's frightened residents huddle in air-raid shelters to escape the invaders bombs. The Ukrainians from all accounts are putting up a fierce resistance volunteering in droves to wage battle using aging guns, Molotov cocktails and in some cases their very bodies to slow the Russian advance. But how long can the Ukrainians hang on? And how far is Vladimir Putin prepared to go to crush them? Mark Savchuk, a coordinator for Ukrainian journalists joins us from Kyiv to talk about what's going on right now in the heart of the battle. Also, Dan Hoffman, a former CIA station chief in Moscow, joins to discuss what to make of Putin's bizarre erratic but unbelievably brutal behavior. In this first-ever look at the secret inner workings of an Arab security service, Katz tells the story of Jordan's General Intelligence Department, or GID, the masters of human intelligence on the espionage battlefields of the Middle East, who proved pivotal and crucial go-to allies of the CIA and America's other intelligence agencies in the war against ISIS and the war on terror. With the revealing and intimate insight of the intelligence officers who fought ISIS, No Shadows in the Desert is a rare glimpse into how a strategic partnership helped change how terrorism is fought in the Middle East and beyond. Samuel M. Katz is the New York Times Best Selling co-author of Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi (St. Martin's Press, 2013); an excerpt from the book was featured in the August 2013 edition of Vanity Fair. His book The Ghost Warriors: Inside Israel's Undercover War on Suicide Terror covered Israel's undercover counterterrorist units and their role in stopping the suicide bombers in the second intifada, and was published in February 2016 by Penguin-Random House/Caliber. He is the co-author of the National and Los Angeles Times best-selling Harpoon: Inside The Covert War against International Terrorism's Money Masters. During our final conversation, he provided some key information on the matter. https://www.bluebloodfilms.com/team Fred Burton is a former police officer, special agent, and New York Times best-selling author. Beirut Rules was optioned by Sony, and Chasing Shadows continues to generate interest and awareness by way of several recent interviews with Fred Burton. https://www.officialfredburton.com/ Our CHASING SHADOWS feature project is a timely story rooted in the bestselling book, which explores this fascinating high-profile unsolved case from the 1970s. When author Fred Burton and I connected via social media, we began to uncover new details based on handwritten journals my father kept, and have now brought the story into the present day by way of this deeply personal connection.” – Ted Andre Book Synopsis: On a warm Saturday night in July 1973 in Bethesda, Maryland, a gunman stepped out from behind a tree and fired five point-blank shots into Joe Alon, an unassuming Israeli Air Force pilot, and family man. Alon's sixteen-year-old neighbor, Fred Burton, was deeply shocked by this crime that rocked his sleepy suburban neighborhood. As it turned out, Alon wasn't just a pilot – he was a high-ranking military official with intelligence ties. The assassin was never found and the case was closed. In 2007, Fred Burton – who had since become a State Department counterterrorism special agent – reopened the case. In Chasing Shadows, Burton spins a gripping tale of the secret agents, double-dealings, terrorists, and heroes he encounters as he chases leads around the globe in an effort to solve this decades-old murder. From swirling dogfights over Egypt and Hanoi to gun battles on the streets of Beirut, this action-packed thriller looks into the dark heart of the Cold War to show how power is used, misused, and sold to the most convenient bidder. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support
The siege of Pliny's Letter continues as host Chris Palmero proceeds further in the close reading of this Christian forgery of the late second century. Anyone who listens to this episode can learn about other contemporary Christian forgeries written over the name of an emperor, about the poetic structure and literary devices used by the forger of Pliny's Letter, about how the treatment of persecution in Pliny's Letter would only make sense to a Christian of that time, about strange anachronisms and use of terms by Pliny that would only ever have been used by Christians, and about the numerous and flagrant parallels between this document and other Christian writings of the time, including the New Testament and the acts of the martyrs. It's part of BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY's multi-part investigation of the key text used by those who argue an early date for Christianity.Opening reading: A fake letter from the emperor Antoninus to the common assembly of Asia sheds further light on Christian forgeries of imperial rescripts during this period.Patreon: www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcenturyWebsite: facebook.com/BornInTheSecondCenturyE-mail: secondcenturypodcast@gmail.comMusic: Pompeii Gray on Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud00:47 - Reading: ANTONINUS, Letter to the Common Assembly of Asia.15:55 - OPENING Remarks.18:28 - Reading: Fake Letter from a CIA STATION CHIEF.21:57 - Close Reading RE-INTRO.23:21 - REDCARD: Pliny's Three Artificial Questions.29:34 - REDCARD: Very Old and Very Young Christians in 112 AD.31:20 - YELLOWCARD: Chiastic Structure.32:51 - REDCARD: Persecution Trope: The Name vs. the Flagitia.42:36 - REDCARD: Anachronism: "The Name."47:38 - Close Reading CONTINUED.49:40 - REDCARD: Persecution Trope: Confessors, Deniers, Apostates.1:01:09 - YELLOWCARD: Amentia (Madness).1:02:03 - REDCARD: Pliny Punishes the Christians Anyway.1:04:59 - Two REDCARDS: Pliny Puts the Question Three Times; The Martyrs are Silent.1:09:12 - REDCARD: Sending Prisoners to Rome.1:15:09 - REDCARD: No True Christian Would Curse Christ.1:17:38 - REDCARD: Use of the Term "Christ."1:22:35 - REDCARD: Persecution Trope: The Sacrifice Test.1:29:43 - REDCARD: Christians Compelled to Curse Christ.1:33:24 - CLOSING Remarks.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcentury)

Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe created an uproar in Washington recently when he told lawmakers that his office will be scaling back in-person briefings on election security to Congress. Instead they are providing written reports, in hopes to cut back on leaking. Democrats, who have blamed the Trump administration in the past for downplaying election threats, especially from Russia, immediately slammed the decision. While Ratcliffe's decision created the typical political sparring, it also raised questions about the 2020 election and what countries like Russia and China are doing to interfere. On the FOX News Rundown earlier their week, Fox News Contributor and former CIA Station Chief, Daniel Hoffman joined host Jessica Rosenthal to discuss election security, what our intelligence community is doing to combat foreign interference and why he thinks both parties need to put the politics aside when it comes to protecting our democracy. Hoffman revealed some insightful information about the goals and tactics of countries like Russia, who have been accused of meddling in our prior elections. He also discussed how American defense agencies are working to stop their efforts. The original conversation was too long and we could not include all of it in our original segment. On The FOX News Rundown Extra, you will hear our entire conversation with former CIA Station Chief Daniel Hoffman. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
