In this solo episode of Travis Makes Money, Travis reflects on some of the biggest lessons he's learned from an incredible lineup of past guests, including Josh Peck, Scott Harrison, Jack Carr, Jordan Harbinger, Randy Couture, Joe Gatto, Donald Miller, George Kamel, and more. Drawing on conversations with entrepreneurs, entertainers, athletes, authors, and thought leaders, Travis uncovers the recurring themes that separate successful people from everyone else. From the power of generosity and networking to the importance of systems, environment design, and earned confidence, this episode is packed with practical wisdom that can help anyone build a more successful and fulfilling life. On this episode we talk about: Why access and opportunity often come from simply asking and leading with generosity The hidden costs of success, including burnout, identity shifts, and personal sacrifice How systems consistently outperform motivation when it comes to achieving goals Why changing your environment is often the fastest path to personal reinvention How confidence is built through action, repetition, and evidence—not positive thinking Top 3 Takeaways Relationships compound when you lead with generosity. The most successful people focus on helping others without keeping score, creating opportunities that often come back in unexpected ways. Systems beat motivation every time. Long-term success in business, health, and finances comes from creating repeatable processes rather than relying on willpower. Confidence is earned through action. The people who appear confident aren't necessarily fearless—they've simply accumulated enough evidence through repeated practice and experience. Notable Quotes "Access comes from asking." "You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your habits." "Confidence is the receipt you earn from multiplied effort over time." In this episode, Travis Chappell and producer Eric dive into one of the most impactful pieces of career advice ever shared: Steve Martin's famous quote, "Be so good they can't ignore you." Together, they explore why this principle still applies in today's crowded digital landscape, how top performers across industries focus on mastering their craft before chasing opportunities, and why consistency over years—not hacks or shortcuts—is the true path to long-term success. On this episode we talk about: Why Steve Martin's "Be so good they can't ignore you" philosophy remains relevant today The difference between focusing on fundamentals versus chasing shortcuts and hacks How successful entrepreneurs prioritize product quality before marketing Lessons from guests like Jack Carr, Tom Bilyeu, and other high performers on mastering their craft The importance of consistency, patience, and putting in years of focused work to build expertise Top 3 Takeaways The fastest path to success is often mastering your craft so thoroughly that opportunities naturally come to you. Great marketing can create initial momentum, but long-term success depends on delivering an exceptional product or service. Becoming "undeniably good" takes years of focused effort, repetition, and consistency—far longer than most people expect. Notable Quotes "Be so good they can't ignore you." "There's always room for the best." "In order to be good enough where people can't ignore you, it's going to take a decade of time." Bob DeMarco welcomes Al Salvitti of Regiment Blades to Episode 673 of The Knife Junkie Podcast for one of the most grounded, experience-driven conversations the show has had in a long time. Salvitti brings 52 years of martial arts training, 15 years of real-world bouncing experience in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and a knife design built entirely around what actually works when fists are flying. This is not a conversation about what looks good in a video — it is a conversation about what kept a small guy standing in packed bars where fights broke out five times a night.Salvitti traces his path from taekwondo black belt to Philadelphia boxing gyms to Sayoc Kali under Tuhon Chris Sayoc, explaining how each layer of training changed his thinking about power, timing, and weapons. He developed a full-body power-striking system grounded in keeping both feet on the ground and using the skeletal frame instead of just the shoulder—a method that has been taught to Navy SEALs, Marine units at Camp Pendleton, and Border Patrol agents. He also shares what those experiences taught him about why complicated techniques fail under real stress and why simplicity wins every time. His LowViz punch blade at regimentblades.com came directly out of those lessons: a blade that deploys in the same motion as a punch, grips like a pistol, and rides flat on the belt in a sheath that Salvitti engineered himself, because every other option on the market failed to meet his standards. The big story of the episode is the connection between the Regiment Blade and bestselling thriller author Jack Carr. Salvitti sent Carr a custom LowViz and, months later, discovered that Carr had written the knife into his new novel, "The Fourth Option," with full credit to Salvitti by name. The main character carries the Regiment Blade. A chapter of the book covers a knife fight in the dark using the weapon. Carr described it in print as "designed to be an extension of your hand"—words that Salvitti said captured exactly what he built it to be. Salvitti and maker John Gray produced 175 custom Fourth Option editions with acid-etched finishes and pinned wood handles for the book launch, and a production version of the Fourth Option LowViz is currently in progress. The episode also covers Salvitti's approach to situational awareness and what he posts on the Regiment Blades Instagram: real street-violence footage, shared not for shock value but to show people what unscripted violence actually looks like. No flying kicks. No fancy blade work. Just speed, aggression, and whoever prepared better. His philosophy is direct: the wheel is always spinning, and training before it stops on you is the only option worth taking seriously. For full show notes, past episodes, and more from The Knife Junkie, visit theknifejunkie.com. From building elite discipline in the SEAL teams to creating a blockbuster book franchise adapted into an Amazon series starring Chris Pratt, Jack's story is packed with lessons on focus, generosity, preparation, and pursuing ambitious goals without letting the odds stop you. Travis shares the biggest takeaways from their conversation and explains how these principles apply to entrepreneurship, creativity, and life. On this episode we talk about: Why obsessively consuming great work is a form of training The importance of making a physical and psychological break during major life transitions How generosity and helping others can create life-changing opportunities Why singular focus and full commitment matter when pursuing big goals Jack Carr's “never pay attention to the odds” philosophy and how it applies to business and life Top 3 Takeaways The things you naturally love consuming may point directly toward the work you're meant to do. Major growth often requires changing your environment so you can fully step into a new identity. Big dreams only become reality when preparation meets opportunity — and when you stop focusing on how unlikely success seems. Notable Quotes “The education wasn't separate from the enjoyment. Discipline, humility, resilience, and what it means to serve the story first. In episode 178, I sit down with acclaimed actor and audiobook narrator Ray Porter for a wide-ranging conversation about storytelling, performance, and how a workmanlike approach to the craft has shaped his career. Ray discusses narrating Jack Carr's The Fourth Option, the start of a new series and character outside the Terminal List universe, and what it's like to bring Jack's words to life after years of collaboration across fiction and nonfiction. He shares his unconventional approach to audiobook narration — reading cold, letting the text lead, and trying to disappear so the listener can connect directly with the story. We also dig into the physical, mental, and creative demands of narration, the difference between acting on stage, screen, and behind the mic, and why audiobook work is far more difficult than many people assume. The conversation moves from craft to calling, touching on burnout, creative renewal, theater, imposter syndrome, and the importance of building a full life outside the work itself. Ray also reflects on his role as Darkseid in Zack Snyder's Justice League, the long road from being cut out of the theatrical release to finally hearing audiences cheer when the #SnyderCut arrived. Can CA Be Saved? Clay Travis and Buck Sexton discuss California’s role as a political bellwether. The hosts closely analyze both the California governor’s race and the Los Angeles mayoral race, framing them as potential indicators of whether voters are beginning to push back against progressive governance. They highlight moments from recent debates, particularly around the controversial issue of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, presenting it as a broader cultural flashpoint that reflects deeper national divisions on identity, fairness, and public policy. Energy and economic policy also receive significant attention, particularly California’s high gas prices and restrictions on in-state oil production. Clay and Buck argue that environmental policies limiting domestic energy output have contributed to economic strain and increased reliance on foreign energy sources, tying this discussion into larger concerns about affordability, inflation, and energy independence. The Los Angeles mayoral race becomes a major focal point, especially the candidacy of Spencer Pratt, who emerges as a disruptive outsider voice. The hosts emphasize his blunt critique of Los Angeles leadership, particularly on homelessness and public safety, highlighting his argument that addiction—especially to drugs like fentanyl and meth—is a primary driver of homelessness rather than simply a housing shortage. They position his messaging as resonating with voters who are frustrated with long-standing policies and escalating urban challenges, including crime and visible homelessness. Don't Fear the Hantavirus Clay and Buck discuss coverage of a developing Hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship. They emphasize that while the virus carries a high fatality rate, it remains extremely rare and difficult to transmit between humans, urging listeners not to panic while highlighting how quickly fear can spread in the current climate. They discuss the lingering impact of COVID-19 on public trust in government and health institutions. Clay and Buck revisit controversial pandemic-era policies such as contact tracing, lockdowns, and shifting public health guidance, arguing that these decisions severely damaged confidence in institutions like the CDC. They warn that this erosion of trust could have serious consequences if a more dangerous pandemic were to emerge, as widespread skepticism might lead to public resistance against official guidance and potentially even societal instability. The conversation expands into a broader examination of pandemic preparedness and risk, including concerns about future viral outbreaks and biosecurity threats. The hosts speculate about how emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and biotechnology, could lower the barrier for creating dangerous pathogens. They frame this as a double-edged sword—while AI could drive major scientific and medical breakthroughs, it also introduces the risk of misuse by bad actors, raising questions about regulation, oversight, and long-term global security. Jack Carr's Fourth Option Clay and Buck interview bestselling author Jack Carr, providing a shift in tone toward entertainment, publishing, and creative industries. Carr discusses his new thriller novel, “The Fourth Option,” introducing a new protagonist and storyline outside his popular Terminal List universe. He explains the inspiration behind the book, drawing from classic Western themes, 1980s pop culture influences, and his own military background, while highlighting his goal of expanding into new characters and storytelling worlds. The interview also explores the intersection of books, television, and streaming media, as Carr reflects on the success of his existing franchises and their adaptation into hit series. He provides insight into the creative process behind writing novels versus producing television content, emphasizing the differences between independent writing and collaborative production environments. The conversation touches on Hollywood, audience reception, and how data-driven success has enabled him to pursue new creative projects. Clay and Buck engage Carr on the broader publishing industry and storytelling trends, discussing how bestselling authors build loyal audiences and expand their intellectual property across multiple platforms. They also explore how casting decisions are made for adaptations, including Carr’s experience working with major actors and how his work attracted high-profile talent. Another notable theme from the interview is the importance of reading and literacy in the digital age. Carr and the hosts emphasize the value of books in developing empathy, critical thinking, and focus, contrasting it with the negative effects of social media consumption and constant digital distraction. They encourage listeners to read more and promote reading habits among younger generations as a way to counteract declining attention spans. The Gov't is Stealing Your Money Guest Mehek Cooke, Senior National Security and Legal Analyst for the Daily Signal, outlines claims of widespread abuse within home healthcare programs, citing billions of dollars in expenditures and alleging systemic failures in oversight and accountability. The discussion raises concerns about inefficiencies in government programs, the challenges of prosecuting financial crimes, and the broader issue of taxpayer-funded fraud. The hosts connect this story to national concerns about wasteful spending and the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms. Political analysis continues with discussion of Ohio’s upcoming elections, including Senate and gubernatorial races. The hosts and guest warn that despite Ohio’s recent Republican lean, Democrats remain competitive and highly motivated, framing the state as a potential battleground that could signal broader national trends ahead of the midterms. National security becomes another central topic as the conversation shifts to U.S.–Iran relations and global energy markets. The discussion focuses on tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, potential negotiations, and the strategic importance of oil supply routes. I'm Shane Whaley — a self-confessed "guile over guns" spy fiction reader who has always preferred le Carré's slow burn spy novels to military firefights. So what happens when a Le Carré fan picks up Jack Carr's Cry Havoc, a 550-page Vietnam War action thriller written by a former Navy SEAL? Welcome to the Spybrary Rodeo — the brand new Spybrary feature where I pick up a book outside my comfort zone, or by a new-to-me author, give it a fair crack, and tell you exactly how many pages I stayed on for. What if your real calling has been with you since you were a kid—and you've just forgotten how to hear it? In this preview episode, former Navy SEAL turned bestselling thriller author Jack Carr sits down with Travis to unpack where certainty of purpose actually comes from, and why your most honest clues are often buried in what you were obsessed with between ages eight and eighteen. From growing up surrounded by his late grandfather's World War II maps, medals, and Marine Corps aviation memorabilia, to getting hooked on black‑and‑white “frogman” films and library books about early Naval special operations, Jack shares how the stories, artifacts, and heroes of his childhood quietly imprinted a lifelong desire to test himself and serve something bigger than himself. Jack explains why humans are wired to prove their value to the “tribe,” and how, in a world of comfort and convenience, that ancient drive to hunt, fight, and contribute hasn't disappeared—it's just been numbed. He and Travis explore the idea of an inner “voice” or sixth sense that pushes you toward challenge, risk, and service, and how ignoring it in favor of safer, more socially acceptable paths can leave you feeling lost as an adult. They also dig into why the books, movies, and TV you binge when you're young work like a time machine: they don't just entertain you, they program your sense of identity, possibility, and what a meaningful life looks like. You'll hear how Jack's early immersion in classic thrillers and 80s action heroes didn't just inspire his SEAL career; it became a stealth education in storytelling—structure, pacing, character, and theme—long before he ever wrote a sentence. He breaks down why reading physical books as an active participant hits your brain differently than passively consuming content on screens or through audiobooks, and how that deliberate input helped him transition from special operations to a second career as an author without ever feeling like he needed a “Plan B.” The conversation also turns to parenting and the modern “wild west” of algorithms, social media, and what Jack bluntly calls “manipulation devices.” As a dad, he shares how he thinks about mentors, cultural influences, and the difference between choosing your heroes—like Rocky or classic war stories—and being fed influencers and content you never asked for. He and Travis wrestle with how to help kids trust their instincts, protect their attention, and still hear that inner calling in a world where the loudest voices are often coming from bots, brands, and foreign actors instead of real mentors. If you've ever felt disconnected from your purpose, wondered when you lost touch with the most unapologetic version of yourself, or questioned whether it's too late to follow that nagging inner voice, this preview will give you a powerful lens: look back at what lit you up before the world told you who to be.  Hit play to hear why Jack believes the best futures are built by those who stay students for life, trust their gut, and are willing to test themselves in service of something greater.
