Presenting the kick off of the 56th year of our annual Perspectives in Military History Lecture series with author Mr. Ted Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich will discuss his new book, The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration That Won World War II, that captures the insightful revelations regarding the major roles played by General George C. Marshall and Henry L. Stimson to prepare America for war and ensure the Allies' victory in World War II.   Ted Aldrich, a career-long New York-based commodity and trade finance banker, has had a lifelong passion for history. The book has received critical acclaim from historians such as Walter Isaacson, Kai Bird, and Evan Thomas, and his talk features engaging stories about the lives and partnership of Stimson, Marshall, and the Allied leaders they worked with, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and general officers Dwight D. Eisenhower, George S. Patton Jr, Douglas MacArthur, and Omar N. Bradley.

While Carter is being lauded for virtues and impressive accomplishments through his storied life, his legacy with Iran during the period of his presidency is more problematic and fraught with questionable decisions. Indeed, a credible case can be made that it was a consequence of Carter's actions - and inactions - that Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran was enabled to take power. Jian is joined by historian and journalist Kai Bird (redux) on his biography - The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter. His latest film, Oppenheimer, although Nolan's first biopic, is no exception. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” (2005) by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, and tells the story of the scientist who invented the atomic bomb. The film is shot on IMAX® much like his previous works and maintains Nolan's signature storytelling that plays with time and our perception of it. Oppenheimer (2023) stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II . The film was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the book, American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin. The film traces Oppenheimer's early life, his rise to world prominence through the Manhattan Project, and his subsequent downfall after being stripped of his security clearance in 1954 due to his alleged past communist sympathies and outspoken criticism of the nuclear arms race. The cast includes Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife “Kitty”; Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, the Manhattan Project's director; Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, chair of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and rival of Oppenheimer; and Florence Pugh as Oppenheimer's lover and former Communist party member, Jean Tatlock. The film provides a window not only into one of the 20th century's most iconic figures, but also into the political and social forces that surrounded the birth of the Atomic Age and America's transition from World War II to the Red Scare and Cold War.  My guest is Audra Wolfe, a writer and historian who focuses on the role of science during the Cold War.Timestamps:0:00         Introduction4:01         Reinvigorating debates about the bomb7:48         Oppenheimer's views in context14:46      The factors driving the decision to drop the bomb17:32      Was secrecy really required?19:49      Science in Germany vs. the Soviet Union24:14      FBI surveillance of Oppenheimer and other scientists28:46      Revocation of Oppenheimer's security clearance37:37      Oppenheimer's complicated legacy41:09      Castle Bravo and nuclear testing: another seminar Cold War moment45:01      Leslie Groves, Oppenheimer, and scientists with leftist affiliations51:20      Vannevar Bush and other early Cold War science figures53:45       Congress's hearing on Lewis Strauss' cabinet nomination1:00:17   The film's broader messages and lessons for today1:04:37   Making nuclear weapons front and center1:08:26   “Barbenheimer”Further reading:Bernstein, Barton, “The Oppenheimer Loyalty-Security Case Reconsidered”, 42 Stan. The Oscars countdown is coming to a close! On the fourteenth episode of All the Film Things, my friend and writer/ director Samy El- Kamel is back to discuss my favorite film of the year, the latest masterpiece by Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Oppenheimer, a film that many have considered Christopher Nolan's “magnum opus”, is an epic biographical drama film based on a true story following J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Manhattan Project, from the making of the atomic bomb to the world he created after making the atomic bomb. While the description of the film makes it seem like a straight biopic, it is very much a Nolan film. This film is based on the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. After collaborating on six films together over the past twenty years, this is the first time Nolan cast Murphy in a lead role. The film has an all- star cast, including in addition to Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Jason Clarke, and Rami Malek. Oppenheimer received the most nominations (with ten) at this year's upcoming Oscars, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning how many Oscars Oppenheimer will take home! Samy is one of my very favorite ATFT guests and this is his sixth appearance on the show. Samy and I are both massive Christopher Nolan fans… which I think the audience will very much pick up on. So much so that we both made sure to see Oppenheimer four times in theaters. There was no one else I could have recorded this episode with. Check out Samy's Youtube channel Barefoot Python Media to watch his videos including his ranking of Christopher Nolan's films, the future of physical media, and his director/ cinematographer reel. Click here to watch and subscribe to the Barefoot Python Media Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia/videos. We recorded this episode on January 21, 2024. Since I was editing the previous ATFT episode (on Killers of the Flower Moon), I couldn't analyze Oppenheimer as extensively as I had hoped and tend to do with Christopher Nolan films so I didn't talk about the film as much as I hoped but that is completely okay because the episode turned out incredible. In this episode, Samy shares additional facts behind the true story of Oppenheimer's life while also analyzing the man himself further. Since Oppenheimer is (only) three hours long, Christopher Nolan couldn't portray everything in the true story. Through Samy, I learned the subtle ways in which Christopher Nolan captures the true Oppenheimer.  We also discuss the trademark Nolan qualities in Oppenheimer such as parallel editing, non- linearity, and how both of those qualities come together to play with time. While the film is mostly analytical, the last section is more of a casual conversation surrounding Nolan, recent videos Samy created for Barefoot Python Media that are available on Youtube, and a little prank Samy pulled that had me laughing so hard.  The next episode will be the big Oscars special! Due to upcoming production assistant opportunities, this episode may not be released on February 28. Following the success of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. sought to develop a potentially more powerful and deadly weapon – the Hydrogen Bomb. Despite having led the team at Los Alamos, J. Robert Oppenheimer became an outspoken opponent of the H-Bomb. His stance made him enemies who sought to undermine his influence, and soon his security clearance came into question. Today Lindsay is joined by Pulitzer prize-winning biographer, Kai Bird, to examine Oppenheimer's life, and eventual fall from grace. His book, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. The blockbuster Oppenheimer movie focuses on two portrayals of J. Robert Oppenheimer. One is the famous physicist known as the architect of the atomic bomb, and the second is a more vulnerable man, maligned as a communist sympathiser. Then there's a third portrait. It makes a cameo in the film and it resides right here at the National Portrait Gallery. Pulitzer-Prize winning biographer Kai Bird, whose book inspired the movie, takes a look with us. Despite a long period of relative stagnation, nuclear power has remained the quiet backbone of the United States’ clean energy supply for decades. Now, the Joe Biden administration wants more from the sector as the country hustles to meet ambitious emissions goals. Jigar Shah, the director of the Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office, said nuclear energy will only become more critical as demand for electricity surges over the next 20 years. On the show today, Shah makes us smart about how much the country relies on nuclear energy. We’ll also discuss lessons learned from building the first nuclear reactor from scratch in decades, and how the industry plans to win over Americans who are concerned about safety and toxic waste. Then, we’ll get into the high stakes of today’s vote for speaker of the House of Representatives. And Elon Musk's satellite internet company Starlink is part of geopolitical conversation yet again, this time in Israel. Later, we’ll hear from a teacher about the expectations that educators pay for classroom supplies themselves. And this week's answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from Kai Bird, co-author of “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Here’s everything we talked about today: “Nuclear power is having a resurgence” from Axios “Utilities Want to Convert Coal Plants to Nuclear; Skeptics Abound” from The Wall Street Journal “New Georgia reactor shows benefits and costs of nuclear power” from Marketplace “Study identifies reasons for soaring nuclear plant cost overruns in the U.S.” from MIT News “Advanced Nuclear – Pathways to Commercial Liftoff” from The Department of Energy “NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design” from The Department of Energy “Playbook: Jim Jordan's day of reckoning” from Politico “Google, Amazon, Apple could see antitrust bills put on hold if Jim Jordan is House speaker” from CNBC “Israel Latest: Musk's Starlink Approached as Biden Readies Trip” from Bloomberg We want to hear your answer to the Make Me Smart question. In making “Oppenheimer,” which opens in theatres this weekend, the director Christopher Nolan relied on a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography of the father of the atomic bomb, “American Prometheus,” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. Bird is credited as a writer of Nolan's movie, and he spoke with David Remnick about Oppenheimer's life story—in particular, about the ambivalence that the scientist felt, and expressed publicly, about the use of the bomb, which led to a McCarthyist show trial that destroyed his career and reputation. “He's very complicated and he's highly intelligent, so he's capable of understanding and holding in his head contradictory ideas,” Bird says. On the one hand, “He feared that if [the bomb] was not used, or the war ended without the use of this weapon, the next war was going to be fought by two nuclear-armed adversaries and it would be Armageddon.” On the other hand, after Hiroshima, Oppenheimer used his status as a celebrity scientist to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear warfare, a move that landed him in the crosshairs of federal officials. “What happened to him in 1954 sent a message to several generations of scientists, here in America but [also] abroad, that scientists should keep in their narrow lane. They shouldn't become public intellectuals. And if they dared to do this, they could be tarred and feathered,” Bird notes. “The same thing that happened to Oppenheimer in a sense happened to Tony Fauci.”

Like “Barbie,” Gerwig's two previous films as a director and writer are concerned with coming of age as a woman. Once criticized as a “bossy girl,” Gerwig recalls, she tamped down her instinct to direct, focusing early in her career on acting and then screenwriting. She told David Remnick how she finally gave herself permission to be a filmmaker.
