On this edition of the Red Bulls Insider Podcast, I’m joined by US Soccer Hall of Famer and former MetroStars and Red Bulls goalkeeper Tony Meola! Tony knows all about being a major part of USA soccer, and he shares his thoughts on the state of the Men’s National Team and why Bruce Arena is the right man to be at the helm. We also get into the Red Bulls, touching on Tyler Adams’ progression and whether he’ll be heading over to Europe, as well as the club’s new 3-6-1 formation. And there’s still more, as we reminisce about Meola playing with the MetroStars in MLS’ inaugural season, discuss how to cultivate young American talent in MLS and where former Red Bull Matt Miazga might end up in the fall. But before I chat it up with the three-time World Cup keeper, I share my thoughts on the Red Bulls’ much-improved play as of late, their back-to-back dominating wins and whether they’ve turned the corner on the season. It was hard to miss David Beckham's name on U.S. Soccer's list of Hall of Fame nominees. But does he belong? With Dave hanging out in the UK, Andrew and Doyle grapple with the international superstar's place in the HoF, and it's not cut and dry. Beckham's case might surprise you. Then it's on to a rivalry heavy weekend featuring Toronto FC sans Jozy and Seba, a Cascadia clash complete with timber-related trash talk and a tough choice for Oscar Pareja and FC Dallas. Plus, a closer look at Patrick Vieira's rapidly rising coaching career After the break, Andrew gives MLS and San Jose legend Chris Wondolowski a call to reminisce about the Cali Clasico. The 75th edition will go down on Saturday night in NorCal, and Wondo was a San Jose Clash then Earthquakes fan from the start. Go down memory lane as MLS's fourth all-time leading scorer tells stories about Landon Donovan's place as Judas in Quakes lore, wrestling matches between the Bash Brothers and so much more! In the mailbag, Doyle assesses the US U-20's World Cup so far and takes a crack at predicting Bruce Arena's US roster for upcoming World Cup qualifiers before a emailer compares FC Dallas and Ajax in the wake of the Europa League final. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!
The show is back after a week hiatus, and while Robert is away, Daniel Feuerstein of the Feuerstein's Fire Internet Soccer Show was on to talk about the beautiful game. First off, we talk about the initial coverage of the Barclay's Premier League on NBC Sports, and some of the reaction (not always supportive) of the American soccer community. Then the topic of the US Soccer Hall of Fame was brought up, based on an article by Neil Morris of Indy Week that talked all about the Hall being in storage in a warehouse in North Carolina. We move on to talk about the US Men's National Team and their victory in Sarajevo, and some news from within MLS. Finally, we break down the weekend's scores and talk about the US Open Cup a bit. Thanks for listening to the United States of Futbol show!
