This is CrossPoliticNews’ Weekly Roundup sponsored by Christian Business Leaders Network. If you want to find out more about this network and its efforts to connect Christian business leaders so that they can more effectively help their businesses and shape culture, visit businessmakers.network. Again, that’s businessmakers.network. (https://businessmakers.network/) Well, as our journalist Justin Chartrey reported, Washington state is in for some trouble right now because their governor, Bob Ferguson, just allowed more taxes to be passed in the state. And if this wasn’t bad enough already, these look like they will be some of the largest tax increases in the state’s history. According to our reporter, Justin Chartrey, the bills that were passed will increase the state budget. "The budget, expected to increase an additional $12 billion over the budget from two years ago ...Washington’s Congress operates on two-year budget cycles..., also adds more than $9 billion in new/updated taxes." Specifically, there are three big areas that these taxes are hitting: house prices, gas prices, and small business taxes. For houses, these taxes will increase the cap of 1 percent to at least 3 percent on the annual property tax. This might sound familiar because I covered this particular tax a few weeks ago, but basically it will make housing taxes fluctuate worse by taking away specific limitations. For example, these taxes will partly depend on population growth, which as everyone knows, can change. Secondly, the gas price is going to rise six cents. This one might not sound as bad as the others, but since gas prices in Washington state are already more expensive than most other states, this tax doesn’t really help the state move in the right direction. Finally, there are a few new taxes that will make it much harder to maintain a small business. It’s already hard enough to make money in a small business, and the last thing that these small business owners need is to have more taxes breathing down the back of their necks. And did you know that even Tesla owners are impacted by other new taxes? Check out the full article on crosspoliticnews for more information on these new tax laws in Washington state. (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/governor-signs-off-on-tax-hikes) Meanwhile, our journalist Justin Chartrey also wrote an article about baseball bans and Pete Rose. Pete Rose, nicknamed Charlie Hustle, had been permanently banned from the game of baseball in 1989. He has the all-time hit record, and he played for 24 years, but since Rose would bet money on baseball games, he was prohibited from playing the sport and banned from any possibility of entering the hall of fame. Mark Dewey, the podcast host of In the Bullpen and a former major league pitcher, said that, “I vaguely remember all of us kind of looking at each other, thinking, this is unbelievable. But I don't think any of us had any concept of, ‘Oh, this doesn't mean he gets in the Hall of Fame’. I think it was simply we knew he could not work in the game of baseball, and especially for a guy like Pete Rose. I mean it truly was sad. It truly was his life.” (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/baseball-permanent-bans-and-integrity) And yet Pete Rose was also banned from the hall of fame. At least, he had been banned until now because, even though he has passed away, his ban was just recently lifted. Now, there is a possibility again that he can re-enter the hall of fame. Of course, this raises many questions. Should we lift the ban only after a player has passed away? Is that just? How should we judge whether someone should make it into the hall of fame? In this special episode of Gangland Wire, host Gary Jenkins takes a deep dive into the life, career, and controversy surrounding Pete Rose, the legendary Major League Baseball icon who recently passed away at 83. Known as “Charlie Hustle,” Rose's name is forever etched in baseball history with franchise records in games played, hits, and runs scored—primarily during his storied tenure with the Cincinnati Reds. Gary reflects on Rose's gritty, high-energy playing style, recalling key moments like his controversial performance in the 1980 World Series, a memory that holds special weight for Kansas City fans. But Rose's career wasn't just about records and accolades—it was also marked by one of the most notorious scandals in sports history. This episode tackles the darker side of Rose's legacy: his gambling addiction. Gary explores how Rose's betting habits led him into dangerous territory, including associations with mob-connected bookies, mounting debts, and investigations that eventually culminated in the damning Dowd Report. With evidence linking his bets directly to baseball games—including some he played in—Rose's choices ultimately cost him his place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Listeners will hear a detailed breakdown of Rose's gambling spiraled out of control, the organized crime figures behind his wagers, and the broader integrity implications for the sport. Gary shares his perspective on the ongoing debate: Should Pete Rose be reinstated, or does the scandal outweigh his accomplishments? Subscribe to get gangster stories weekly. [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers out there, there's that little special extra for you guys. Because of the passing of Pete Rose, former MLB star, I want to talk about what happened to him. He died of natural causes last week at age 83. You know, this guy was a hell of a ballplayer. I'm sure most, I think everybody should know who he is, but if you don't, I'm going to tell you a little bit about him. He mainly played with the Cincinnati Reds. He also played with the Phillies and maybe the Expos for a short period of time, but mainly the Phillies and the Reds. He set Cincinnati Reds franchise records like you couldn't believe, and he became the face of the Reds. After he retired from baseball, he became the Reds' manager for a period of time. We remember him pretty well in Kansas City because he played for the Phillies in 1980, and they beat us in the seventh game of the 80s series. He's a Cincinnati native, and he was the all-time leader for the Cincinnati Reds in games played, 2,722, played appearances, 12,344. [1:08] Runs scored, 1,741, hits, 3,358, singles, 2,490, doubles, 601, and walks, 1,210. I guess he wasn't a big home run hitter, but anyhow, he was a hell of a player. Plus, defensively, he was magnificent. He was hustling all the time. And his whole career, he had 4,256 hits. Now, anybody that goes over 4,000 hits is a pretty big deal in baseball. He was a hustler like you couldn't believe, both on the field and off the field. You know, once early in his career, he drew a lot of criticism for taking out a catcher in an all-star game when, you know, there's nothing at stake there. But he is blasted home, and the ball beats him home, and he just takes out that catcher. He played with complete abandon, if you ever remember seeing him play. [2:05] But he had an Achilles heel, and that's why we're here today. He was either a gambling addict, or at the very least, he wanted to gamble on sports so bad that he r...

Send us a textAuthor of 19 books, Keith O'Brien grew up in Cincinnati and had a front row seat to much of Pete Rose's career. Keith's 2024 book "Charlie Hustle" won awards from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and The New Yorker. We both enjoyed the book immensely and recommend it highly. Pete Rose was addicted to gambling, something he finally admitted, but only when he was trying to get baseball to reinstate him to be eligible for the Hall of Fame. Pete always played to win and also always managed his teams to win. But his lifelong association with gamblers and gambling proved to   be his ultimate undoing. He does have the most hits in MLB history AND a 44-game hitting streak that remains a National League record. Keith has so many great stories from having interviewed Pete for 27 hours and talking with so many people who knew and interacted with Pete Rose on a daily basis. Keith asked us if what we thought about Pete Rose being in the HOF! Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Send us a text#Yankees Giancarlo Stanton is injured. Again. This time it is tennis elbow in both elbows!  #Mets FA acquisition Nick Madrigal is doing his Jed Lowrie imitation as he's out for the season before it ever started!  Injuries are part of the game but you hope to get through Spring Training! Max Scherzer is not thrilled with ABS testing so far. But Max is never happy about, everything? Terry Francona of the #Reds told his players to ignore ABS since they are not going to use it this season anyway. Authir Keith O'Brien will join the podcast in 2 weeks to talk about his book "Charlie Hustle".  Pete Rose was in the news again as he's set to receive a pardon for his criminal activities (tax related) from President Trump. #MLB commissioner Rob Manfred then piped in that they will take another look at Pete's explusion. The youngest player to play MLB was LHP Joe Nuxhall in 1944. He was still 15 years old and only in high school!  He pitched one game, got shelled, and didn't come back to the show for 7 years!  Joe pitched 16 seasons and won 135 games a pitcher and became a long time broadcaster for Cincinnati with HOF broadcaster Marty Brennaman. We also talked about NY Giants Freddie Lindstrom who became a HOFer - somehow, and still is the youngest player to ever play in the World Series. Even younger than #Braves Andruw Jones! Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Check them out on Spotify or Apple Music!  Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening! RUNDOWN   Mitch Unfiltered is joined by Daniel Timothy O'Neil of the "dang apostrophe" filling in for Hotshot in a Giant discussion about a Seahawks unanticipated loss. Fortunately for Seahawks fans no team in the NFC West is pulling ahead, offering a silver lining as both the 49ers and Rams also suffered losses. Huskies beat Wolverines, do we need to Fisch for compliments here? Mitch interviews Keith O'Brien, author of the New York Times bestseller "Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose and the Last Glory Days of Baseball". O'Brien discusses Rose's complex legacy, his rise as an iconic baseball player, and the gambling scandal that led to his banishment from the sport. O'Brien shares insights into his 27 hours of interviews with Rose, who later cut off communication, possibly due to the uncomfortable questions about his gambling. Rick Neuheisel joins Mitch to discuss the latest in college football: Cal vs. Miami and Vanderbilt vs. Alabama. Who had a better weekend: Washington's Kalen DeBoer or Arizona's Jed Fisch? The Seahawks No-Table panel agrees that the game felt like a typical Pete Carroll-era performance where the team seemed to coast and struggle before trying to rally late in the game. Despite nearly tying the game, Seattle found themselves in a hole due to missed opportunities and poor execution, particularly on defense.   GUESTS   • Keith O'Brien | Author of "Charlie Hustle - The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose" • Rick Neuheisel | CBS College Analyst • Seahawks No-Table | Brady Henderson (ESPN Seahawks Insider) & Jacson Bevens (Cigar Thoughts)   TABLE OF CONTENTS 0:08 | REVENGE!
