Freeman Jones was a black, PhD-educated scientist in Jim Crow America, who was the lead of his team. However, when his company opened up the facility for tours for investors or the public, he was kindly asked by ownership to exit the facility and go wait in the yard with the other black employees, most of whom were part of the cleaning crew. Freeman would go onto marry Mada Myers, who had marched with Dr Martin Luther King in Mobile, Alabama, and was active in that legendary Civil Rights movement of the 1960s American South. She later taught English Literature for nearly 30 years. Freeman and Mada were married for 62 years. It's not surprising that such people would go on to raise four lovely children – the youngest of whom they named: Cobi N'Gai Jones. As a young man, Cobi was very nervous when he approached his highly educated parents with his desire to put his education on hold to pursue a career in soccer, where there was no established league, hardly any professional players and very little money. Surprisingly to Cobi, it was his mother, the educator, who told her son, " Go chase this dream of yours, son, and see where it takes you.”Cobi went on to have a legendary US soccer career; he is in the Guinness Book for most games played for the US National Team, and the most continuous years played with one MLS club – two records that will never be touched. So, as he poignantly told me: in the end, he was glad his mother won the argument. Cobi was kind enough to host me at the LA Galaxy facility where he will soon join Landon Donovan and David Beckham in the form of a 10-foot-tall bronze statue - soon to be unveiled in the Legends Plaza at the Galaxy stadium entrance. It was a pleasure to sit with Cobi Jones and I hope you enjoy it was well. Ep 24 – Cobi Jones Thanks for listening! We appreciate your support. David Copeland-Smith founded Beast Mode Soccer in in 2010 as a training system to help guide soccer players' technical development. Landon Donovan lanza dardo contra la actual selección de EUA. Inglaterra sigue con paso firme en las eliminatorias.
This is occasionally—OK, almost never—called El Otro Clásico. It's a bit of a nod to the fact that these two clubs, BARCELONA and ATLÉTICO MADRID, have a shared enemy that they each hate more than their opponent here. Barça's beef with Real Madrid is the Clásico, Atléti's feud with their crosstown neighbors is a proper derby. This match is just a meeting of two of Spain's great institutions, a fixture that's spawned wild scorelines and decided league championships. In this case, it's a meeting of first and second in La Liga, and they're tied on 38 points.Joining us to preview the festivities is Ian Darke, the legendary commentator who's called matches across the world in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the World Cup. American fans might know him as the soundtrack to Landon Donovan's famous goal against Algeria in 2010, but he's also called some of the biggest matches in club football—like this one. He'll be behind the mic for ESPN on Saturday at 3pm Eastern Time, but first he's here with us to look ahead to the match—and look back on that time he and Steve McManaman stuck around the Camp Nou until 2 a.m. drinking beers with the locals! If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Eddie Robinson was a Major League Soccer "one club loyalist" having spent his entire career with the same team, in two locations. He began play with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2001 and only changed locations and team names, when the Quakes relocated to Houston and became the Dynamo. Robinson remained with the team through 2011. Along the way, he won four MLS Cups and established himself as one of the league's top defenders. He had the unique situation of playing with Landon Donovan in San Jose, then against him in Houston, when Donovan moved on to the LA Galaxy. Robinson joined Founding Futbol to share his memories of playing with Donovan, then what it was like to face off against him. He shared memories of Donovan's maturity, reflects on how Donovan "saved" MLS before David Beckham did and so much more. The US Men's National Team went to the 2010 World Cup with high hopes. Coming off a massive win over Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup and looking to avenge a disappointing 2006 World Cup showing, the trip to South Africa was one filled with expectations. When the draw put them in England's group, everyone highlighted that game as the one to watch. But, as often happens, group play brought interesting dynamics and the US needed a win against Algeria to make it happen. What unfolded was one of the most dramatic late-game goals in the history of American soccer. Landon Donovan received a pass from Tim Howard to start the break after regular time had expired, and after passing the ball away, followed his run and finished a rebound that would live forever in the history books Mike Sorber became the first person in US Soccer history to both play in and coach a men's World Cup for the national team. He joined Founding Futbol to help us explore the build-up to the World Cup, that game, the significance of that group of players and more. One of the unique attributes of the 2009 US Men's National Team that beat Spain in the Confederations Cup was the dynamic makeup of the roster. From established stars like Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, to young emerging talent like Jozy Altidore, as well as young talents like Jonathan Bornstein. But once player's story became well known because of its unlikelihood. Jay DeMerit was a starting center back for that team after working his way into England's top flight as part of Watford. However, he only played for Watford because Major League Soccer passed on him, he took a chance on himself and moved to England with few resources and a big dream. DeMerit joined Founding Futbol to talk about the 2009 Confederations Cup win over Spain, his path to the Premier League with Watford and how that helped him land a spot on the USMNT. DeMerit also shares his current endeavor -- RISExSHINE -- and why he is passionate about helping harness the reality of a device-driven world to help our youth become well rounded individuals through development multiple forms of intelligence. Before the the Boys Development Academy came into being in 2007, it needed a model. Something the represented new concept of training and youth development for America's growing soccer population. When US Soccer established the Bradenton residency of its U17 Men's National Team, John Ellinger was the man to run it. Ellinger built a curriculum of development for forty of the countries top soccer talents -- a group that included the likes of Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley -- helping shape the future of the senior men's team. That program, and its success, also shaped "what good looked like" for a new approach to developing youth soccer talent in America. John Hackworth, considered the architect of the DA, credits Ellinger as the real "father" of the DA. He joined Founding Futbol for a wide-ranging conversation about the Bradenton residency, the DA, and the current state of youth soccer. Lisa Carlin and Sandra Herrera went live on YouTube for an A3 ONE SHOT to react to reports that USMNT Legend Landon Donovan is set to be named interim coach at San Diego Wave. While the search for a permanent coach is still on-going, Donovan will fill the void left behind the firing of Casey Stoney back in June amid a 7-game losing streak by the club. In the meantime, Paul Buckle had been filling in as interim. The Wave are currently in 10th place with 15pts. Will Donovan be able to right the ship and get the Wave into the playoffs after a tumultuous season so far both on and off the pitch.
