The Olympics has played a critical role in the evolution of soccer in America. Strong attendance during the 1984 games, hosted in Los Angeles with soccer matches played across the country, was a key factor in FIFA's decision to award the 94 World Cup to the United States. But women's soccer had not been part of the Olympics historically. That changed in 1996, which was also hosted in the US, this time in Atlanta. With one World Cup win to its name, the USWNT saw an opportunity to showcase its excellence on a stage that American sports fans truly understood and embraced -- the Olympics. A legendary group of female athletes dominated headlines at those games, and the USWNT was at the top of the list, marching to the Gold medal and thrusting the team into the consciousness of the sports consuming public. Kristine Lilly played a vital role in the USWNT 1996 Gold Medal run. In total, she in played in five World Cups (winning two) and three Olympic Games (also winning two) and was the most capped player in the history of women's soccer with 352 full internationals for the United States between 1987 and 2010. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to football's emerging popularity in America. When ESPN began broadcasting in 1979, no one knew if a 24-hour sports cable station would work. The concept was new. The format was new. And there was no data to suggest the American public would watch.  But ESPN not only worked, it changed the sports culture globally by giving airtime to sports that previously went unbroadcast and by creating a highlight culture. Soccer benefited from these factors – as ESPN broadcast the Major Indoor Soccer League, bringing fans to the game in new and interesting ways. It also gave sports fans distilled key moments from various soccer matches exposing more people to the beautiful game.   JP Dellacamera has broadcast 17 World Cups, making him the voice of soccer for many Americans. He joined the show to discuss the start of his career at ESPN and how the game has evolved with the cable sports networks over the decades. Leading up to the summer Olympics in Paris, Founding Futbol is a great place to learn the history of both the men's and women's US national teams competing in the tournament. We've already brought you several episodes on our feed that delve into the emergence of the programs -- like the 1989 US Men's National Team that qualified for its first World Cup in 40 years on the back of Paul Caligiuri's famous goal. And the 1991 US Women's National Team that won the first Women's World Cup. There are four specific episodes that Founding Futbol will release in the build up to the summer games, starting at the end of July, that advance that story even further, with interviews from US Soccer legends.    On June 17, Chapter 15 on the 1994 World Cup will be released.  On June 24, Chapter 16 on Alexi Lalas will be released. That episode features an interview with Alexi. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before releasing it on our main feed as well.  On July 8, Chapter 18 on the beginning MLS will be released. That episode features an interview with MLS legend Jeff Agoos. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before the episode comes out. On July 15, Chapter 19 on the 1996 Olympics will be released. That episodes features an interview with the USWNT all-time caps leader, Kristine Lilly. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before releasing it on our main feed as well.  For those of you that haven't jumped into Founding Futbol yet, there's also a second episode every week called Extra Time. It features an interview with someone connected to the core topic of the week. On July 18, Shannon Mac Millian, who scored one of the most famous goals in US Soccer history at the 96 Olympics, joins Extra Time. And host Kent Malmros is working on bringing additional Extra Time guests.  Founding Futbol is a great place to find content that will get you connected to and excited for the US soccer team's journey in the olympics. And for those of you that haven't been listening, you can learn about the history of American soccer in other episodes as well.  Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com Host: Kent Malmros Guest: JP Dellacamera (Broadcaster) Learn more about your ad choices. Anson Dorrance has served as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at the University of North Carolina for the past 40+ years. In his tenure Anson has won a staggering 22 Division I National Championships and is the only coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships in a single sport. When ESPN announced its list of the Best Coaches of the Past Quarter Century, Anson was one of only two coaches to make the list from a non-revenue collegiate sport. What else is staggering is the list of iconic players who have learned from Coach Dorrance. To name literally just a few you have Kristine Lilly, Tobin Heath and of course the great Mia Hamm. Away from North Carolina, Anson pioneered women's soccer on a global stage by leading the first ever US Women's National team to a World Cup Championship in 1991 and in 2008 was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Anson has authored two books, 'Training Soccer Champions' and the recently updated and re-released 'The Vision of a Champion' and hosts a podcast by the same name. His incredible life story is chronicled in the biography by Tim Crothers, 'The Man Watching.' To attend one of Anson's famous soccer camps for players, teams and coaches go to CarolinaGirlsSoccerCamp.com. Season 2 of this podcast is dedicated to Tar Heel and friend of the Audley family, Ashley Riggs. Just 3 months ago the UNC soccer family lost a teammate when Ashley Riggs passed away after a long battle with Cancer. Under Anson Dorrance, Ashley was a two time National Champion and a co-captain her senior year. In honor of Ashley, an annual award is being set up through the UNC Women's Soccer program. This award will be presented annually to a player that demonstrates hard work, perseverance and fight. Monies will also go to sponsoring high school teams and players who otherwise may not be able to afford to attend UNC soccer camp. Donations can be sent to: Educational Foundation (Women's Soccer) PO Box 2446 Chapel Hill, NC 27515 Checks can be made out to Educational Foundation (Women's Soccer) and be sure to put Ashley's name in the memo line. 50 Cups of Coffee with Bobby Audley is a production BobbyAudley.com. The conversation starts with some excited talk around Kristine's former UNC teammate and Netherlands Women's Manager, Sarina Wiegman being hired as the next manager of the Lionesses (1:36); And then we head back to the beginning to talk about how Kristine found confidence in sports and found her connection to competition that would fuel her through her career at UNC and with the USWNT (2:55); Kristine then shares a leadership story and we discuss how to talk about leadership to young female athletes (10:21); We then turn the conversation to her book co-written with Dr. John Gillis, Jr., "Powerhouse", by talking about how we can foster environments for girls to embrace competition, wherein Kristine talks about Anson Dorrance's program at UNC (17:06); Shannon and Kristine then talk about the "American mentality", the term often credited as being a major part of  the sustained success of the USWNT, by talking about elements of the USWNT that define it (20:13); We then discuss the mental side of the game, specifically how former USWNT coach Tony DiCicco brought in a Mental Skills coach to the USWNT back in 1995, and how that helped Kristine grow as a player (27:47); Shannon and Krisitine then unpack a huge unanswerable question in Women's Sports: "Where would the women's game be if the 1999 World Cup were not televised?" (32:25) Before we go, Kristine defines Womanhood in 3 Words and reveals who she wants to player in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of "The Girls of Summer." We know that exceptional team members contribute to the success of a team. And yet, it takes more than a group of superstars to win a championship. How do you get people to put the team first? How do you create chemistry among players? How do you build a winning team that plays for each other, either on the field or in the workplace? Kristine Lilly served as a midfielder on the US Women's Soccer Team through five FIFA World Cups and three Olympic games. A member of both the US Olympic Hall of Fame and US Soccer Hall of Fame, Lilly is an expert on effective teamwork. Dr. Lynette Gillis specializes in corporate strategy and organizational behavior, serving Concordia University in the roles of professor, Dean of the College of Business and Associate Provost. Lilly and Dr. Gillis are also the coauthors of Powerhouse Teams: 13 Teamwork Tactics that Build Excellence and Unrivaled Success.  Today, Lilly and Dr. Gillis discuss how the characteristics of powerhouse teams translate from the playing field to the workplace. Lilly shares some of the factors that made the 1999 US Women's National Soccer Team successful, explaining how they built a winning mentality and put their egos aside for the betterment of the group as a whole. Listen in for insight around how leaders can unite a team with a big vision and learn how the opportunity to advance the game of soccer for women and girls inspired Lilly's team to win big! Key Interview Takeaways Powerhouse teams share the same characteristics, regardless of setting. The 1999 Women's National Soccer Team provides a model for excellence in teamwork that translates to any organization; the players exhibited trust, friendship, reliance on each other and a sense of resilience. A strong leader unites their team with a big vision. Lilly credits Coach Anson Dorrance with teaching the team to play for each other and inspiring them to go beyond winning to ‘sell the game of soccer.' For a team to excel, team members must put their egos aside. Lilly's team was successful because the players accepted each other's differences and bought into the idea that it's not about the individual, it's about the team. Team chemistry is created by a center set. Teams that work well together are united by a common draw. For Lilly's team, the players all bought into the mission of advancing the game of soccer for women and girls—and winning! Powerhouse teams build a winning mentality. Lilly and her teammates worked with a mental skills coach on imagery and intention, developing practices that helped players focus on what they needed to do on the field.
