Kate Abdo, Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies and Mo Edu welcome in the voice of soccer to the millions of Spanish speakers all across America, Andrés Cantor. He recounts his memories of calling games that Clint, Charlie, and Mo all played in and the differences between the USMNT of the 90s and the team now. Andrés also explains his love of Maradona and time spent working with him, when he left Argentina for Los Angeles as a kid, skipping school and driving all the way to Mexico to watch World Cup matches on TV, and becoming a cultural icon with appearances on The Simpsons, in a Super Bowl ad, and the film Speed Racer. And finally, he discusses the power of viral video when his call of Argentina winning the World Cup in 2022 spread like wild fire around the world and made him a public figure in his home country like he is in America. They review how immigration processes were affected by these firsts and the importance of planning in advance. Then, they look ahead to the 2026 World Cup and discuss a variety of immigration concerns surrounding the multi-country nature of the upcoming tournament.See the video version of this podcast here.
In this episode of DeadBall TV, we jump into muddy waters quick by reacting to Rodrigo De Paul's comments that the 2022 Argentine National Team is the best in history. The old heads gonna be big mad at us.Next we delve into the light-hearted topic of racism in football. This was prompted by Real Madrid defender David Alaba suffering from racial abuse after he did not have teammate Karim Benzema as his #1 nominee for FIFA's FIFPro Player Of The Year.Speaking of that, the entire FIFPRO award ceremony is an absolute clown show, best highlighted by Spanish fraud Luis De La Fuente putting Julian Alvarez as the 2022 PLAYER OF THE YEAR.Dear God... 32 teams set out at Qatar 2022, only eight remain. It's time for the Quarterfinals and the first two games take place on Friday. The early game sees Netherlands, slightly fortunate to beat the USA, take on an Argentina side who have put an early defeat to Saudi Arabia firmly behind them. In the second game, tournament jollies Brazil take on an underwhelming Croatian outfit. Malcolm Bamford and Barry Penaluna give their best bets. It's time for Day 2 of the Round of 16 as Malcolm Bamford and Barry Penaluna discuss their thoughts and best bets on the two matches. France have looked great up to this point and they were able to rest players in their final group game so they should be ready for this matchup. Poland, on the other hand, have been poor and can consider themselves fortunate to be here. That being said, I'd take being lucky over being good any day, and they're here with a shot.
