Europe is a wonderful place, I think we can agree on that. I could spend all day listing reasons why, but then again this is just an episode description. However, some people are claiming that the jury is in regarding the state of European tech. Europe lost the race. Pack your bags. Martin Mignot, Partner at Index Ventures, begs to differ. He has worked with many rising European companies like Revolut, Deliveroo, and BlaBlaCar, and sees a bright future for European innovation. Listen to this episode to find out exactly what Martin means, and why. Expect to learn: Why does Martin think Europe is a great place for Founders? This week we're talking to author and bookseller, Martin Latham. What Martin doesn’t know about books isn’t worth knowing. Having worked as a bookseller for 35 years, he’s seen it all. Starting out in an independent bookshop on the King’s Road in Chelsea, he worked in second hand bookshops and a couple of branches of Waterstones before opening Waterstones Canterbury in 1990. In that role, he’s seen and done a lot with my favourite anecdote being the fact that he was responsible for putting the cost of an archaeological dig through the petty cash. Martin’s experiences as a bookseller and his clear love of literature are captured in his book, The Bookseller’s Tale, which was published in September.

From his experience, Martin is able to talk expertly about what businesses might experience over the coming months and how to hold on to your job as an employee. Martin speaks empathically and effectively, as he offers tips and advice about what to do if you find your business in difficulties and how you can engage with business owners as an employee, if you're worried about your current position. What Martin has to say is pure gold, and I hope it helps to smooth the way over these difficult times.

He was known to have a way with the ladies. When he was young, Martin Pang was known as a wanna be playboy. He knew how to wine and dine his paramours (on his parents dime). But there was a dark side to his certain brand of charisma.Who knows when that dark seed began to grow inside this lucky boy who’d been rescued at 6-months of age from a life of certain poverty and hardship. His adoptive parents doted on and loved this boy, making his every wish come true. But that love, that attention, that ‘Martin can do no wrong' devotion just wasn’t enough. It was never enough.  As Martin matured into adulthood, collecting a fat paycheck from the family business without doing a lick of work, that anger stoked by feelings of entitlement and greed continued to grow.By the 1990s Martin racked up a few failed businesses, no doubt adding fuel to his rage. His latest career goal as an actor wasn’t working out, either. He was getting desperate. What was a spoiled rich kid to do? The constant supply of little red envelopes filled with wads of cash began to dry up and the once successful family business that had fueled his exploits for decades had fallen on hard times.Who knows when the idea hit him, Martin’s great plan at redemption, but one thing is for certain: It involved leaning in to his high school nickname, “Pyro Pang," a nod to his reputation of threatening to torch the property of his perceived enemies. His parents and the warehouse where they had toiled in for decades could give their golden boy one final sacrifice. By destroying the building, the insurance money would restore his easy street lifestyle. It took just one match, set at the bottom corner of the old, dried plywood wall. Within minutes flames ignited, licking the walls of the old warehouse. What Martin hadn't planned for was the four Seattle fire fighters who would lose their lives battling the blaze, making it the worst tragedy in the history of the Seattle Fire Department.

Martin never disappoints. With his decades of experience in the industry he shares wisdom on everything from how to navigate difficult times and show up as a leader, to turning adversity into triumph, tactics and strategies to be productive and come out on top, and the many many lessons found in his new (must read!) book, Coach to Coach. We also talk about the most important aspect we should all be focusing on right now: connection – whether it be business or personal. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN The most important question being pressed into our homes is “revealing”The weaknesses this experience is revealing about our financial situations, careers, family, relationships, health, daily routines and disciplinesThe two factors that control whether you’ll be stressed, anxious, and stuck in the same place or go backwardsHow the magnifying glass that has been put on upon us can create awareness that is a catalyst to changeThe analogy of the caterpillar and the butterfly and why you can’t succeed without the struggleThe 3 P’s we use to develop confidence and specific examples of how you can build yoursWhy you’re not dreaming big enough and what we think about the law of attraction (is it all BS?!)What Martin believes has been the most productive thing in his life and how you may be missing it in yoursDuring crisis you don’t get to build culture, but you can start now building it for the next timeThe one “C” that is the foundation of everything whether personal or business and how/why it will stand the test of time no matter what happens with technologyWhat to watch when you're having a down day and want to get fired up in the morningThe principles and foundations of world class coaching and how to light a fire in your belly for this incredible vocation And much, much more. Mastering Intensive Care

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2017 55:29

Are we truly making healthcare safer? Do we adequately understand human factors in how we work in hospitals? How would you respond if your partner died from a “routine operation”?   These are just 3 of the questions you are likely to ponder as you listen to this interview with Martin Bromiley OBE from the United Kingdom on the Mastering Intensive Care podcast. Whilst many people that we care for in our Intensive Care Units receive excellent care, sadly there are some who end up in our ICUs after something goes unexpectedly wrong during a routine operation. Tragically some of these people die. Not due to anything they did, but from medical error. In the final DasSMACC special episode, I speak to Martin Bromiley, who became a widower when his wife, Elaine, died in such circumstances 12 years ago. In what has been described as “the direct result of human factors and failings in non-technical skills, created by systemic failings in the healthcare system”. Martin didn’t blame, shame or complain. He did his best to move forward by researching the culture in healthcare around safety and human factors. And he recognised that although there were pockets of excellence the UK’s National Health Service was culturally a long way behind most other high risk industries. As a result of his experiences Martin supported the making of a DVD entitled “Just a routine operation” which explored the lessons of his late wife’s death, as well as a BBC Horizon programme about human factors called "How to avoid mistakes in surgery". Professionally Martin works in aviation where he is a pilot for a major UK airline and where he has a background specialising in human factors. Therefore, Martin founded the Clinical Human Factors Group, a non profit-making charitable trust which aims to advise and promote best practice around human factors. Since then the Group has promoted human factors at the highest levels in healthcare, making a significant contribution to current thinking. More significantly though, the terms human factors and system safety are becoming much more commonly understood in healthcare, much of which is due to Martin’s efforts and leadership. His work has been recognised through awards from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Difficult Airway Society, and the patient support group “Action Against Medical Accidents”. In the 2016 New Year Honours list Martin was awarded an OBE for his work to further patient safety. Martin was a speaker at the DasSMACC conference in Berlin back in June, and after delivering an enthralling talk entitled “How To Fail”, we went to a quiet room to record an interview. We had an important conversation and touched on: The tragic case of Elaine and her death after a routine operation How Martin dealt with it What support Martin received in and out of the hospital What Martin has been doing to try to improve safety in healthcare What healthcare can and cannot learn from the aviation industry His 3 key messages about human factors How he uses mental rehearsal to be the best airline pilot he can be This podcast is my quest to improve patient care, in ICUs all round the world, by inspiring all of us to bring our best selves to work to more masterfully interact with our patients, their families, ourselves and our fellow healthcare professionals so that we can achieve the most satisfactory outcomes for all.
