Mark interviews Martin Popoff about his latest book ANTHEM: Rush in the 70's as well as a lifetime of passion writing about music. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update and some comments from recent episodes, and a word from this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their conversation, Martin and Mark talk about: Martin's introduction to music when he was six or seven years old Turning people into metal-heads when Martin was working at a record store about the age of fifteen How people learned about music and records prior to the internet How Martin's love and passion for music evoled into life of writing about music, which he started to do full time in 2000 Martin's first book, which was a self-published book of a collection of record reviews, which later got picked up by a traditional publisher in 1997 Writing 9 or 10 music books per year The style of music review that Martin prefers to write The importance of talking about and lauding the art of the entire music production when writing a book about musicians and their work The interesting nature of the narrative of the story of a band and the narrative of a band's concept album How Martin values letting the band speak for themselves in the books he writes about them, relying on actual quotes from lengthy interviews, rather than blatantly injecting his own theory into the narrative The different listening experiences of listening to a full album start to finish from a vinyl LP and listening to it in custom single song chunks in a digital era The recent collaborative Canadian multi-location/self-isolation version of "Lean on Me" from Canada Strong Martin's original 2003 Rush biography: Contents Under Pressure which is now out of date and out of print How the desire to write a single comprehensive updated book about Rush resulted in well over 350,000 words and 3 volumes. Anthem: Rush in the 70s. (May 202) Limelight: Rush in the 80s (Oct 2020) Drive: Rush in the 90s (In the End) (Spring 2021) The use of interview footage from Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage Something that surprised Martin in writing these volumes How there is nobody who sounds like Rush and that are, in many ways, their own unique genre in music What a good gate-way Rush song might be for someone who doesn't think their music is accessible Martin's Podcast: History in Five Songs What music Martin listens to when he is writing After the interview, Mark reflects on the volume of publishing Martin has done, which is atypical for a traditionally published author; he also reflects on the dynamic nature of the relationship and flexibility he has with his publisher. On this episode of the en(gender)ed podcast, our guest is Martin Hultman, Associate Professor in Science, Technology and Environmental Studies at the Department of Technology Management & Economics at Chalmers University in Sweden. Martin's research focuses on the influence of extremist views such as sexism and far-right nationalism on climate change denial. His latest book with Paul M. Pulé, Ecological Masculinities, chronicles the political landscape that has shaped the industrial breadwinner and eco-modern archetypes of masculinity, both fueled by misogyny, and their proposed ecological masculinity as a response that centers science, fact, and reason and a respect for nature. Our conversation with Martin will explore ways in which a response to addressing our climate crisis and, in particular, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, will require that we, as a society, address how we socialize boys and men if we are to save ourselves and our planet from mutual and guaranteed destruction. During our conversation, Martin and I referenced the following resources and topics: The difference between the different archetypes of masculinity including "the industrial breadwinner," the "ecomodern male" and the "conservative white male effect" and its impact on climate change denial An explanation of "incels" or a type of masculinity and group of men who call themselves "involuntary celibate" How Martin's work fits into the "ecofeminism" conversation The work of environmental historians like Carolyn Merchant and her book, The Death of Nature The definition of "hegemonic masculinity" and its role in climate change denial Our interview with Laura Ramirez on prostitution and approaches to reduce or prevent harm that parallel our approach to fossil fuel emissions and climate change How female climate activists are often the target of verbal and physical attacks and threats The groundbreaking book, Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson and threats and attacks directed toward her after the book's publishing The influence of young climate activists like Greta Thunberg and the efforts to discredit and disempower her The relevance of Swedish laws on sexual consent and its impact on climate activism through the "rights of nature" movement --- Thanks for tuning in to the en(gender)ed podcast! Hello my beautiful creators! I hope you are staying healthy, taking extra care of yourselves, and practicing social distancing. If you’re bored in self-isolation or just plain need something ELSE other than the constant onslaught of COVID-19 news, it just so happens that my friend, fellow musician and Cal Poly Pomona alumnus, Martin Gachiri, is here to share the first half of his Mind Made Wrong Interview. Fittingly, he speaks on the isolation of depression and the need for the healing outlets of personal artistic expression and community. It’s a very timely message that I can almost guarantee you will relate to and find encouraging during this frustrating and fearful time in our history. My favorite moments in Part 1:-How Martin found creative freedom by radically changing his perspective on what artistry “looks like”-What you can learn from Martin’s two-week break from speaking aloud (that’s right, he didn’t say 1 word for 2 WEEKS STRAIGHT)-How depression develops as a result of isolation: “me, myself and I” thinking-”When you feel like a burden, that’s when people probably want to hear the most from you.”-The possibility of a “Motown Martin” seriesFor links and more, visit https://www.steelmaggiemusic.com/podcast and check out Episode 43 - Martin Gachiri Interview - Part 1The Martin Gachiri ExperienceIG: https://www.instagram.com/mgxperience/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/mgachiriexperienceSoundcloud (MGX): https://soundcloud.com/mdoggdx316Soundcloud (ReleasetheHeretic): https://soundcloud.com/releasetheheretic- Microdose: https://soundcloud.com/releasetheheretic/microdoseSoundcloud (MIE): https://soundcloud.com/martin30day2017If you received value from this episode, please make sure you are following or subscribed to Mind Made Wrong wherever you stream, and please share this podcast with another beautiful creator you know. What drives our mindset? Performance improvement evangelist and the founder of Trans2 Performance, Martin Johnson talks about exploring performance psychology from a social perspective and how we can change from a threat mindset to a challenge mindset. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What Trans2 Performance does and the value that Martin brings to his customers How Martin’s experience in the Royal Navy informed what he does now What drives mindset A challenge state mindset versus a threat state mindset The ABC technique Key Takeaways: Trans2 Performance explores performance psychology from a social perspective. Mindset is universally relevant. Whether you are an individual just trying to find your way through life, a mother or a father, an entrepreneur who wants to start a business, a leader who’s in the business, or somebody who is working as an employee within an organisation, the right type of mindset is absolutely essential. But understanding where it is and where it comes from is essential. As human beings, we have three main functions that we always default to or want to satisfy that drives our mindset: survival, reproduction, and purpose. A challenge state mindset is where we are focused in the moment entirely on what we want to achieve. We’re aware of the consequences or failure or repercussions but we are absolutely focused on the positive achievement of the task at hand. A threat state mindset is where we’re starting to focus now almost entirely on the consequence of what may happen or the repercussions or the failure of the task at hand, almost eradicating any focus on achievement. It’s where we’re trying to not mess up and where we’re simply trying to avoid things going wrong. When you’re unconsciously going through life, you are not making the conscious decision of challenge or threat. Some people unconsciously rise to a challenge and some people will unconsciously rise to a threat. You are not in control of it. But what happens is if you go through too many experiences in life where you see them as a threat and you are constantly recalling that in your brain and you do that for a prolonged period of time, then you get yourself into almost a threat state mindset mentality on an ongoing basis. The worst thing you can do with a worry or with something you deem as a threat is push it away and not welcome it, because it will keep coming back tenfold and it will only increase the anxiety and the worry’s consequence. Actions and decision alleviate anxiety. There is nothing more powerful than a decided mind. When we are undecided or when we are in limbo and we don’t make decisions, anxiety builds. The to-do list in business is the most underutilised, underrated system there is. Action Steps: Control how you interpret things, if it’s a challenge or if it’s a threat. If you’re concerned about messing up all the time, one of the things that you can do is start blocking out other sources of anxiety or drama or fear. Avoid too much media exposure. Have a news ban. Recognize when you hit the crossroads of the challenge state mindset and threat state mindset and use the ABC technique. Acknowledgment. When you have a worry or a threat state trigger, instead of trying to push it away, acknowledge and accept it. Write it down and write down two or three actionable steps to address it. Breathe. When we moderate our breathing, it helps us reduce some of that chemical release in our brain called cortisol and allows us to delay what we call sensory shutdown. Control. Figure out what you can control in the here and now that will allow you to alleviate any worry of what may happen. Martin said: “At an individual level, we have to feel like we serve a purpose, we contribute in some way to society or in life… And for many people, it’s their career. In the modern day world, for many of us, it’s hobbies, or it might be family, or it might be a mixture of all three.” “We are all human… Even the most resilient people amongst us, we all get to the point where we approach the challenge and threat state crossroads in our life.” Thanks for listening! Are we truly making healthcare safer? Do we adequately understand human factors in how we work in hospitals? How would you respond if your partner died from a “routine operation”? These are just 3 of the questions you are likely to ponder as you listen to this interview with Martin Bromiley OBE from the United Kingdom on the Mastering Intensive Care podcast. Whilst many people that we care for in our Intensive Care Units receive excellent care, sadly there are some who end up in our ICUs after something goes unexpectedly wrong during a routine operation. Tragically some of these people die. Not due to anything they did, but from medical error. In the final DasSMACC special episode, I speak to Martin Bromiley, who became a widower when his wife, Elaine, died in such circumstances 12 years ago. In what has been described as “the direct result of human factors and failings in non-technical skills, created by systemic failings in the healthcare system”. Martin didn’t blame, shame or complain. He did his best to move forward by researching the culture in healthcare around safety and human factors. And he recognised that although there were pockets of excellence the UK’s National Health Service was culturally a long way behind most other high risk industries. As a result of his experiences Martin supported the making of a DVD entitled “Just a routine operation” which explored the lessons of his late wife’s death, as well as a BBC Horizon programme about human factors called "How to avoid mistakes in surgery". Professionally Martin works in aviation where he is a pilot for a major UK airline and where he has a background specialising in human factors. Therefore, Martin founded the Clinical Human Factors Group, a non profit-making charitable trust which aims to advise and promote best practice around human factors. Since then the Group has promoted human factors at the highest levels in healthcare, making a significant contribution to current thinking. More significantly though, the terms human factors and system safety are becoming much more commonly understood in healthcare, much of which is due to Martin’s efforts and leadership. His work has been recognised through awards from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Difficult Airway Society, and the patient support group “Action Against Medical Accidents”. In the 2016 New Year Honours list Martin was awarded an OBE for his work to further patient safety. Martin was a speaker at the DasSMACC conference in Berlin back in June, and after delivering an enthralling talk entitled “How To Fail”, we went to a quiet room to record an interview. We had an important conversation and touched on: The tragic case of Elaine and her death after a routine operation How Martin dealt with it What support Martin received in and out of the hospital What Martin has been doing to try to improve safety in healthcare What healthcare can and cannot learn from the aviation industry His 3 key messages about human factors How he uses mental rehearsal to be the best airline pilot he can be This podcast is my quest to improve patient care, in ICUs all round the world, by inspiring all of us to bring our best selves to work to more masterfully interact with our patients, their families, ourselves and our fellow healthcare professionals so that we can achieve the most satisfactory outcomes for all.
