How to be super fit and influence others with world champion physique competitor and influencer Brandan Fokken Brandan Fokken is an American Men's Physique competitor hailing from South Dakota. From baseball to American football, Brandan was a passionate athlete throughout his youth. He started to train in the gym towards the end of his days in high school, with the intention of building his performance within competitive sports. With a keen interest in bodybuilding, Brandan set out to to build an incredible physique – just like his bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, he failed to make progress due to his lack of fitness knowledge. By the time his days in high school were over, that all began to change. Because Brandan learned more about training and healthy nutrition, it didn't take long for him to build a great physique. Since he moved on from his poor understanding of fitness, he's made a name for himself as a Men's Physique competitor – earning his IFBB Pro Card in 2016.

World Fitness Competitor, Joshua Self, Rebounds After Life-Threatening Motorcycle Accident 45-Year Old Wins Duel Championship Titles in 2022 NPC Dexter Jackson Classic Jacksonville, FL – On July 23rd at the NPC Dexter Jackson Classic, Joshua Self won his 6th and 7th Championship Titles as a Physique Competitor, beating out 150 competitors, many of them half his age. Self's double win is a story of triumph. Self survived a horrific motorcycle accident on January 2, 2020, where he was t-boned and smashed by an oncoming car. Shattering his ankle, ribs, and back landed him 6 months confined to a wheelchair just as COVID was taking hold of the world. Gyms were closed, Americans were piling on the pounds, and the line of excuses for not working out was long. However, Joshua set a goal and ignited his mindset that he would return as a physique competitor, setting his sights on Mr. Olympia in October 2021. After 2 surgeries, rehabilitation and an aggressive routine, Self was on the Mr.Olympia stage, but it was too soon. While his body looked strong and he had built back a winning and impressive phsique, he limped in pain on the stage and it cost him the title. Joshua decided right then, that even at 45-years-old, he was not giving up. Self developed a unique workout system based on biomechanics that allows him to train and build muscle in the fastest and most efficient way possible. Joshua is a true testament to the power of his philosophy on both diet and exercise, and he has just released his secrets to success in a course called Elite Self Image Fitness that can be found at www.JoshuaFitness.com. Joshua credits his 2 years of being a strict vegetarian, then most recently switching to a Ketogenic diet using high-grade quality protein, combined with his unique high rep, time under tension gym workouts and his backstage warm-up secret weapon, the SpinGym as the formula to his astounding comeback success. Motivational Speaker Les Brown said, Joshua's commitment to himself and his drive for physical excellence is a marvel to behold and an inspiration for all of us to keep going and never give up. Joshua's mission now is to motivate young and older athletes alike to focus on their goals inspite of what others around you may be saying. He believes that its never to late to pursue your dreams as long as you want it bad enough and like Zig Ziglar said, “You don't need to be great to start, but you do have to start, to be great!”

In this episode, William Grazione, Coach Gillis Pellegrin, and Coach Zach Richie continue discussing Bodybuilding Competition Prep with actionable steps to take after the competition. This bonus content includes examining a reverse diet vs. a recovery diet to implement immediately after competing, along with the pros and cons of each. Another point within this is setting up expectations that people will - and should gain weight after a competition. What is critical is setting up parameters for that. Will, Gillis, and Zach will also touch on whether or not you can start building muscle right away after a competition and how to shift your mindset from focusing on the scale to focusing on athletic performance and bringing your body back to hormonal balance.
Welcome back to our final episode in our 5 part series on Bodybuilding Competition Prep. Your Host, William Grazione along with Coach Gillis Pellegrin, and Coach Zach Richie go over the dreaded YOLO that many competitors face after a competition. If you ever planned a post-competition meal where you were prepared to shove everything in your mouth that you did not eat over the prep period- we want you to know - you're not alone. The coaches have been there too, and they will share their craziest rebounds ever. We want you to avoid that horrible feeling we felt and the nasty weight gain that can happen. Our coaches will go over how to make sure you have a game plan before you step on stage when it comes to celebrating afterward. Making sure you don't have a rebound comes down to how your nutrition is handled during your prep, your action plan for show day, and the steps you take following the minute you get off the stage. Keep listening to learn more.
Welcome Back to Hey Coach Radio! We are delving into part 4 of 5 in our Bodybuilding competition Prep series as we discuss Peak Week Mistakes. Your host William Grazione is joined by Coach Gillis Pellegrin and Coach Zach Richie. The three discuss how many weeks out from stage time a fitness competitor should be to best prepare for a successful showing. The reason for having a buffer time window? It gives you and the client time for mitigation techniques in case things get tricky, and it reduces the stress and cortisol response on the competitor when they know they are on target for bringing their best physique to the stage. William, Gillis, and Zach also discuss the dangerous peak week mistakes coaches make with their clients. If you're a competitor, you should be wary of water depletion techniques, sodium cutting, and potassium loading that can complicate your heart health. Last but not least, the three coaches go over the uncomfortable and unfortunate circumstances of GI complications related to messing with sodium, water, and potassium. If you're a coach, listen. If you're a competitor, take heed. Keep listening to this informational episode with that has your health or your client's health in mind.

The constant pursuit of shrinking your body can have major costs on your life. Instead of listening to what external validation tells you, you can listen to what your body needs and start validating yourself from the inside out. Key Takeaways If You Are Ready To Take A New Approach To Diet and Exercise, You Should: Shift your goals from aesthetic based to ability based Reject the notion that you have to limit your dietary intake to what external sources tell you Learn to listen to what your body is telling you The Impact of Searching for External Validation Deanna Harder has been involved in the fitness industry in some way or another since the age of 16. She used sports such as figure skating and bodybuilding to stay lean and stay compliant because of her previous disordered eating. It wasn't until she got a speeding ticket on the way home because she was so eager to get home and finally eat a handful of almonds that her compliance to the sport had taken over her whole life. Now, she works with women to help them shift their mindset, validate themselves, and quit the all-or-nothing mentality. How Is Your Mentality Serving You? Aesthetic-based sports and physique-based competitions played into Deanna's desire to get smaller and perform harder. She didn't realize that she was starving her body of the nutrients it needed and using validation from others to justify her all-or-nothing mentality. It wasn't until the age of 40 that she sought help for her exercise compulsion and eating disorders, which is why she is so passionate about helping other women make the change that she did and live better for it. Learn to Trust Yourself Again When coming from a place of restriction and diet culture, it can be scary to navigate the middle, learn about moderate eating, and eat for satisfaction. While it will take some internal work to remember how to trust yourself when it comes to food and exercise, Deanna knows deep down that those intuitive powers reside in all of us. The more you learn to trust yourself, listen internally and stay mindful, the easier it gets to listen to what your body is saying to you. It is fascinating what you can discover about yourself when you tap into what you have ignored for so long, but Deanna is confident that if you can make that jump into the unknown, you will forever be happy that you did. Are you ready to start taking the steps and shift your goals from aesthetic-based to do-based? Share what you resonated most with Deanna's story with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode How aesthetic sports culture lead Deanna to the work she is doing today (8:18) The moment Deanna realized that her mindset and beliefs were not healthy (17:22) Why the attention someone receives ‘before' or ‘after' plays into diet culture (21:35) Challenges that are faced when changing your perspective on physique based goals (25:46) What is the #greatdietdisruption and how you can become involved (32:54) Tips if you want to shift away from an aesthetic based goal to a do-based goal (36:13) Quotes “Those who didn't have such a great experience have a completely different story. So not all of it is bad, but for me in particular, it was not a smart idea to use that sport as a goal because I already had suffered from body image and eating disorders previously before I entered my first competition.” (9:41) “There were so many times that I really should have stopped, but I didn't. The obsessiveness was more powerful than anything I could have controlled at that time.” (19:48) “It was only when I went to eating disorder counseling and stopped competing that I started validating myself. And it was a game-changer.” (23:52) “My poor body was going through hell, and I didn't listen until I had had enough. And I think until you have had enough, you can't help anybody, until they are ready, and I was finally ready.” (31:08) “The ultimate form of control is trust. And the control isn't working anymore. So if it is not working anymore, what are you getting out of it?” (36:24) Featured on the Show Join the Group Strength Nutrition Program Waitlist Here Deanna Harder Website Deanna Harder Online Coaching Programs Moderation 365 Certification Follow Deanna on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! BenGreenfieldFitness.com/hairgrowth As I was recently reading in a fashion magazine, hair has always been the primary indication of confidence for most men. When you consider that two-thirds of men see hair thinning by the age of thirty-five, and men's hair restoration is a $1.5 billion industry, you began to understand how much confidence is contributed to a man's hair. But why? In a Canadian survey conducted by researcher Rosemary Ricciardelli, men identified hair as being the primary link between their youth and attractiveness. Ricciardelli observed how men with a full head of hair — even the ones who weren't particularly otherwise attractive — go out of their way to bring attention to their hair when meeting someone new. These full-haired men tended to be more relaxed and confident in demeanor when dealing with other individuals because they feel like they represent the standard for the ideal man. Ricciardelli helped prove this theory by asking the participants to physically describe their ideal male figure. All of the participants described men who were clean-cut with a full head of hair. We're unconsciously groomed (pun totally intended) and conditioned (ha!) to think that a healthy man has a full head of hair. But how does this psychologically affect the way men actually feel in their hair? Perhaps a full head of hair reassures them of their healthy biological standing. Maybe the loss of hair reminds men of their mortal vulnerability. Even men with gray hair prefer the color change over balding. Beards also matter, as facial hair is also a key part of men's self-identification. In one study, men with facial hair were considered more aggressive than clean-shaven men. Both men and women found men with facial hair to be more masculine, with a higher social status, than men who were clean-shaven. More interestingly, men who are bald tend to accentuate their facial hair as compensation for balding. With the double whammy of baldness and facial hair, a man's masculine appeal could be through the roof. So, to continue on the topic of hair and beard health in men (and the former in women too) that I visited on my recent podcast with Dr. Cameron Chesnut, I decided to continue to explore the topic of hair optimization. My first guest, Jay Campbell, who first joined me on the podcast "Is Metformin Really Dangerous, Little-Known Peptides For Muscle Gain & Fat Loss, Testosterone Replacement Therapy & Much More!" is a 4x international best selling author, men's physique champion, co-founder of Aseir Custom and founder of the Jay Campbell Brand and Podcast. Jay Campbell is a Champion Men’s Physique Competitor, Author, and Entrepreneur. Follow him on Twitter Check out his Website Listen to his Podcast -AND- Read his fat shredding guide: The Metabolic Blowtorch Diet. Motivation Health "I've tried pretty much everything... I've worked with various people on diet and fitness, and I kind of evolved my own diet. It was a version of a fasting diet, but it was also tailored to the unique wants and needs of the individual. Subsequently, I think it was about 2012, maybe 2013, we came up with a version of The Metabolic Blowtorch Diet. I used it with my inner circle... all the way up until we wrote a book on it, which came out at the end of September 2017. " Jay explains his protocol of Intermittent Fasting wherein a person eats a large, high-protein, meal before the fast begins with a period of fasting that lasts about 18-24 hours. Essentially, on weight lifting days the individual needs to eat, and on non-weight lifting days the individual fasts for 18-24 hours, and ideally practices some form of fasted cardio (with that cardio session being LISS, or low intensity-steady state cardio). We talked about the concept of eating a high protein meal prior to a long fast in Episode 106 with J. Wes Ulm. Fitness "The most important thing as we age is to build muscle... Muscle is the greatest deterrent to disease because the more muscle a person has the more metabolically active they are, that also means the more resistant they are to the various diseases of aging. All disease is metabolic in nature... it's a very intricate system internally..." Jay explains that the higher muscle mass a person has, the less insulin resistant they become. Since there are so many diseases with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance as a primary factor, therefore a higher insulin sensitivity (or less insulin resistance) makes a person more resistant to diseases. For his personal training schedule: currently Jay lifts weights Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, with Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday being fasting days combined with LISS cardio. Peace of Mind "Honestly, up until 6 years ago my peace of mind was to go to sleep at night... Basically, what I would call peace of mind is doing 'inner work'... however you define it, it's a silencing of the mind, and all of this insanity that we have today from a technology standpoint, from a distraction standpoint, from social media ... As a human being you have to be able to go and separate that, (and) have what you would call 'me time'... a lot of people talk about meditation... it's kind of hard sometimes to go within and settle down. So, for me I do a lot of contemplation... going to a place where I am peaceful and there is no distraction... That, for me normally, is to go out in nature... in commune with Mother Earth... You're essentially connecting with all that is on this planet... depending on your level of belief, and depending on what you do that can consist of anything. For me, it's praying, and I'm in essentially my own conversation with God... I'm not a religious person at all, but I'm just a spiritual person. I believe God is within all of us, and that we all have souls, and by getting in touch with our souls we're on a direct pipeline to God." We talked about the similarities between prayer and meditation before in Episode 101, with RuEl. Adapt & Overcome "The greatest opportunity in life is through contrast and struggle... I've always been a go-getter. I've always been a do-it-yourself person. But, once I started realizing that there were no mistakes, there were no failures, there were no collapses, that everything was a learning experience and an opportunity to be better and to learn from, my entire life changed. I look at that now today, and I always try to work with as many people as I can because I'm all about service to others... That's my whole entire life now... That's really the goal of being here as a human: How many people can you truly help and serve?" May the wind be at your back... We covered so many topics in this episode, and ran out of time before we were halfway through the list. So Jay has agreed to come back at some point down the line for a follow up show to cover more information from his books. Be on the look out for that episode in the future. As always: may the wind be at your back along your journey towards health, fitness, and peace of mind.
