Stop Sending SDRs to Do a Marketer's Job: The Case for MDRs

Revenue Rehab

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 23:20

In this Starr-Led solo episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi Starr brings a But How perspective to the widespread practice of handing qualified leads from marketing to SDRs and BDRs. Challenging the assumption that sales pressure is the next logical step, Brandi argues that most buyers are actually looking for guidance—not a hard sell—during the critical middle of the funnel. She introduces the vital, often-overlooked role of Marketing Development Reps (MDRs) and offers a blueprint for structuring this function to accelerate revenue. CMOs and CROs will find a compelling case for rethinking funnel strategy to close the costly gap between marketing and sales.  Episode Type: Starr-Led   Brandi Starr cuts through industry noise with bold, unfiltered insights on revenue growth. These solo episodes challenge outdated advice, debunk myths, and break down industry reports to reveal what really drives results. Expect sharp commentary, data-backed analysis, and actionable strategies to refine your marketing and sales approach.  Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers:  Topic #1: Middle of the Funnel Is the New Battleground [03:31]  Brandi spotlights a massive structural gap in the revenue funnel, arguing that 95% of the buying journey now happens before a buyer ever engages with sales. She insists that traditional automation and nurture flows can only take buyers so far—leaving them stuck, overwhelmed, and underserved. Her message is clear: CMOs and CROs must prioritize MoFu strategies and stop letting this “messy middle” bleed potential revenue.  Topic #2: Marketing Development Reps (MDRs) are Essential, Not Optional [05:43]  Brandi challenges the notion that sales development roles (SDRs/BDRs) can handle the middle-funnel gap, claiming they are “chasing meetings and demos” rather than nurturing. She makes a bold case for MDRs—empathetic, insight-driven professionals who guide engaged but not-yet-ready buyers—arguing that organizations without them are leaving high-value leads to stall. Her advice: pilot or reassign resources now, and build MDR compensation and measurement around MoFu KPIs rather than pipeline quotas.  Topic #3: Rethink Buying Committee Support and Buyer Experience [14:54]  Brandi exposes how complex sales cycles with large committees need a strategic MoFu resource to guide and enable all stakeholders—not just the lead contact. She advocates for a shift from automation-focused nurturing to human-led support that's “not pushy, not looking for a quota”—arguing that this trust-driven approach becomes a competitive differentiator. Her test: if your deals are complex and require consultative education, then building this role is overdue.   Why Should Revenue Leaders Stop Ignoring This Problem Right Now?  Because you're wasting millions generating leads only to watch 60% vanish into a black hole between marketing and sales. Brandi makes it clear: this isn't a lead quality issue—it's a structural gap where overwhelmed buyers stall out, SDRs get misused, and revenue opportunities die in the messy middle. Ignoring it means you're losing deals not due to weak campaigns, but because nobody is actively guiding buyers through their biggest hurdles before they're ready to talk to sales.  What's the First Action Someone Should Take to Apply This Insight Today?  Brandi says: shift your mindset to focus on the middle of the funnel—stop obsessing over top-of-funnel leads or bottom-of-funnel closes, and interrogate what your buyers actually need between those points so you can design support that accelerates their internal decision process. If you're not prioritizing MoFu strategy, that's your urgency—start now.  Takeaway  Brandi challenges revenue leaders to fundamentally rethink the buying journey, pointing out that most of the action—and friction—now happens in the messy middle of the funnel, not at the top or bottom. She urges leaders to shift their mindset away from traditional sales and marketing silos, and start prioritizing buyer enablement and support during that critical middle stage. The key move? Stop neglecting the middle of the funnel—design roles, strategies, and resources specifically to guide buyers through this phase, ensuring you become their go-to partner, not just another vendor pushing a quota.  Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live

What if the solution to accounting's talent shortage has been hiding in plain sight? In this episode, Navy veteran Mark Steinhoff reveals how the precision required to maintain life support systems on submarines directly translates to accounting excellence. Having managed critical oxygen systems hundreds of feet underwater, Mark now applies that same meticulous attention to detail as an accountant for a water utility. With the profession facing a 70,000-person annual deficit while 200,000 service members transition to civilian life each year, discover how military experience with procedures, documentation, and quality assurance creates natural accounting professionals—and why veterans might be the untapped talent pool accounting desperately needs.Chapters(01:09) - Transitioning from Military to Accounting (02:37) - Similarities Between Military and Accounting (05:46) - Life on a Submarine (11:31) - How Did Working On a Sub Translate to Accounting (16:43) - The Procedure is Not Optional (20:50) - Current Role and Future Aspirations (24:30) - Exploring Career Paths in Accounting (24:53) - Transitioning from Military to Accounting (26:31) - Leveraging the GI Bill for Education (26:44) - Navigating the Pandemic and Career Decisions (28:36) - The Value of a Business Degree (29:08) - Balancing Education and Personal Life (30:53) - Gaining Practical Experience in Accounting (32:23) - Pursuing an MBA and CPA (45:24) - The Evolving Role of Accountants (47:01) - Closing Thoughts and Encouragement Sign up to get free CPE for listening to this podcasthttps://earmarkcpe.comhttps://earmark.app/Download the Earmark CPE App Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/earmark-cpe/id1562599728Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.earmarkcpe.appConnect with Our Guest, Mark SteinhoffLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marknsteinhoff/Connect with Blake Oliver, CPALinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/blaketoliverTwitter: https://twitter.com/blaketoliver/

Lenten Season Lesson: Charity and Prayer are Not Optional, but Obligatory We all are sinners. This is obvious, but it is possible on any given day for us to forget that. We might focus on the sinfulness of the world. We focus on the failures of others. We may also focus on the ways we have been wronged. We are sinners, but at times that thought can become distant. This theme runs through the Lenten Season. The Lord tells the people in scripture that the issue is not that you don't go to Church (temple). It's not that you aren't sacrificing. But you are allowing things to blind reality. The Lord says you come to give sacrifices to the temple but walk by your brother in need and do nothing. Any one of these things aren't bad. What is bad is that we do not allow the very best of things to penetrate us. The first four days of Lent is a special period. If you want to follow Jesus, deny yourself, and pick up your cross. Hear the insights within the Homily. Charity and prayer are not optional, but obligatory. You cannot have a relationship with the Lord, without caring for His people. Understand what this means during this Lenten Season and its implications for us! ------------------------------------------------------ Image: Christ in Gethsemane: German Painter: Heinrich Hoffman: 1886

Spearheaded by Index Ventures and supported by more than 700 CEOs, the Not Optional campaign is spurring policymakers across Europe to reform outdated rules and regulations that limit employee ownership. We recently reported on new analysis by Not Optional which found that over the past six years, the 2017 average of 12 percent of European employee ownership has climbed to 16 percent. Not quite the 20 percent still enjoyed across the pond, but a 4 percent increase is better than a no percent increase, and figures continue to go up.Looking at 2021 and 2022 numbers, years that saw the crowning of 124 new venture-backed unicorns, the increase in percentage equates to some €5+ billion more that's been put into the hands of European startup employees. We had a catch-up with Dominic Jacquesson, VP of Insight and Talent at Index Ventures, to learn more about the campaign and the report that was released last week, and what will need to happen to maintain the momentum. Also, a good reminder to check out the handy resources Index makes available to all, including the OptionPlan app that helps founders get employee ownership right from the get-go.

Today, Shelby, the author of "No Hands, No Excuses" and "Consequences: Workplace Safety is Not Optional," travels around the country to share his story. For the January 2022 episode, Field Editor Amy Fischbach had a conversation with Lee at this home in Tennessee about his rehabilitation journey and words of wisdom for linemen about safety in the line trade. But is He living, personal, relational, good, and loving? According to Calvinism… also no. Today, Dominic Enyart is joined on air by Chris Fisher, to discuss God's attributes, specifically those He shares with King David. These attributes aren't ones that Calvinists will readily acknowledge, though they're seen in Scripture plain as day. We see that both Christ and David disregard popular opinion, and have a strong sense of integrity. Also, they are both:  -Attractive  -Bold -Unapologetic -Confident -Impulsive -Loyal -Intense -Passionate -Clever -Brilliant We encourage you to check out the Reality is Not Optional YouTube channel, get God is Open book (as either a paperback or ebook) and check out the God is Open website and Facebook group (Open Theists only! ;) Today's Resource: God's Biblical Attributes You may have been told that the five primary attributes of God are immutability, impassibility, omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. We refer to these as the Greek and Latin philosophical OMNIs and IMs. They are quantitative. However, the actual five biblical attributes of God are that He is living, personal, relational, good and loving. These are qualitative. And as we will see, quality trumps quantity. The result of Transformation #2 (God can use you mightily. But you must be willing to follow His leading. It's called OBEDIENCE) By Pastor George Lehman 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (Amp) - Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.  For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim (household good luck images).  Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.   1 Samuel 15:20-21 (Amp) – 20Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and have brought back Agag the king of Amalek, and have completely destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the people took some of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things [that were] to be totally destroyed to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.” Obedience is not Optional.  Obedience was the 1st key step you took when you became a born-again child of God. It's not an either/or situation. Philippians 2:12 (LB) - Dearest friends, when I was there with you, you were always so careful to follow my instructions.  And now that I am away you must be even more careful to do the good things that result from being saved, obeying God with deep reverence, shrinking back from all that might displease him. (Disobedience displeases God) Because we grow up in a world full of options, everything is optional, It's all about my likes and dislikes, my comfort and conveniences. The dictionary says OPTION is: The act of choosing; the freedom to choose; open to choice. If you've studied and qualified, your career options may be more numerous than they would otherwise be; when you go and buy a bike, you have a wide range of options to choose from; you have various options to buy the clothes you want to buy and wear; options what house to live in; options what you will eat.  Life is full of choices (options) everyday. We tend to treat God this way too!! If we are obedient or if not, it doesn't really matter, I mean it's my (OPTION) choice. Our obedience to God can never be optional (open to free choice); an either/or situation. All or Nothing! Partial obedience is disobedience. Someone asked Dr. Cho (pastors the largest church in the world – over 1 million), “what is the key to your great success?”  His reply was very simple, “I pray and obey”. Story of Alexander the Great: A few centuries before Christ, a man named Alexander conquered almost all of the known world using military strength, cleverness and a bit of diplomacy. The story is told that Alexander and a small company of soldiers approached a strongly fortified walled city.  Alexander, standing outside the walls, raised his voice and demanded to see the king.  When the king arrived, Alexander insisted that the king surrender the city and its inhabitants to Alexander and his little band of fighting men. The king laughed, “Why should I surrender to you?  You can't do us any harm!”  But Alexander offered to give the king a demonstration.  He ordered his men to line up single file and start marching.   He marched them straight toward a sheer cliff.  The townspeople gathered on the wall and watched in shocked silence as, one by one, Alexander's soldiers marched without hesitation right off the cliff to their deaths!  After ten soldiers died, Alexander ordered the rest of the men to return to his side.  The townspeople and the king immediately surrendered to Alexander the Great. They realized that if a few men were actually willing to commit suicide at the command of this dynamic leader, then nothing could stop his eventual victory. The real question here is: Are you really willing to be as obedient to the ruler of the universe, Jesus Christ, as those soldiers were to Alexander? Are you as dedicated, obedient, and committed? These are the birth cannels through which Transformation flows Think how much power Christ could have in our area of influence with just a portion of such commitment and obedience. There are certain things in us that must come out. The result of transformation is continuous “obedience”.  Obedience is putting into action that which God requires.  AND IT'S NOT OPTIONAL So many Christians think, “If I'm obedient and do good in one area, then God will overlook my disobedience and sin in another area”. When God's word says something, that's exactly what He means. Psalm 40:6 (Amp) - Sacrifice and offering You do not desire, nor have You delight in them; You have given me the capacity to hear* and obey [Your law, a more valuable service than] burnt offerings and sin offerings [which] You do not require. * Ignorance will be no excuse one day. What is the kinds of Sacrifice we offer:  You can come to church, sing songs, wear CMA colours, go to rallies and jols, even have a leadership position; you can give tithes and offerings; you can do all the works that Christians should do. All this is possible without obedience because obedience is allowing genuine Transformation in the heart.  Sacrifice without obedience is a painful waste of time. James 1:22 (NIV) - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what is says. (Many think because I heard it, I'm ok) Job 36:11-12 (Amp) - If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness and joy.  But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword [of God's destructive judgments], and they shall die in ignorance of true knowledge. (Obedience brings true knowledge) Clearly God wants to change you and mould you into the image of His Son, Jesus.  The only way to do this is if you are willing to allow Him.   Here are some truths about obedience: #1 Obedience brings forth a desire for self-examination, which produces transformation You know when you are walking in obedience because you will have a passionate desire to do painful self-inspection all the time and be willing to change or be transformed. Psalm 139:23 (Amp) - Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart!  Try me and know my thoughts! This wasn't just good talk to impress God.  David's desire is that disobedience wasn't hindering God's work in His life. Most of us don't like self-examination, do we?  Self-examination creates Transformation (change)   Isaac Newton - First law of motion - “Everything continues in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change by forces impressed upon it.” Some people will change when they see the light.  Others change only when they feel the heat. #2  Obedience brings forth blessings. Every promise in God's word comes with a condition = obedience. 1 John 3:22 (Amp) - And we receive from Him whatever we ask, because we [watchfully] OBEY His orders [observe His suggestions and injunctions*, follow His plan for us] and [habitually] practice what is pleasing to Him.  *Injunction = authoritive order   Deuteronomy 12:28 (Amp) - Be watchful and OBEY all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.   Blessings come when we commit to do it God's way, not our way.   Leviticus 26:3-13 (LB) - If you obey all of my commandments, I will give you regular rains, and the land will yield bumper crops, and the trees will be loaded with fruit long after the normal time! And grapes will still be ripening when sowing time comes again.  You shall eat your fill, and live safely in the land, For I will give you peace, and you will go to sleep without fear.  I will chase away the dangerous animals.  You will chase your enemies; they will die beneath your swords.  Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you, then thousand!  You will defeat all of your enemies.  I will look after you, and multiply you, and fulfill my covenant with you.  You will have such a surplus of crops that you won't know what to do with them when the new harvest is ready!  And I will live among you, and not despise you.  I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be my people.  For I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, with the intention that you be slaves no longer; I have broken your chains and will make you walk with dignity. Are you positioned for blessing?  If not, you're settling for second best. #3  Disobedience brings forth consequences. Do yourself a favour, go read Leviticus 26:14-28 & Deuteronomy 28:15-68.  See the price of disobedience grow. 53 verses are curses. Revelations 3:3 (Amp) - So call to mind the lessons you received and heard; continually lay them to heart and OBEY them, and repent(change/transform).  In case you will not rouse yourselves and keep awake and watch, I will come upon you like a thief, and you will not know or suspect at what hour I will come. What price are you willing to pay for disobedience? The result of transformation comes from obedience, and obedience is NOT OPTIONAL.

Church Unity is Not Optional. Many Christians who want unity don't value theology or holiness. Yet, God commands all three. There must be a way to end the divisions that grieve the Holy Spirit without sacrificing truth or embracing sin. As the world grows more divided, Christians must unite—in love for the Lord and one another—as a winsome witness to the world through our oneness in Christ. Francis Chan joins Hank Hanegraaff to discuss his new book Until Unity and why Christian unity is not optional. We hope that this conversation will inspire Spirit-filled people from all denominations to fight for unity with humility, gentleness and love in obedience to our Lord's High Priestly Prayer. “…that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” To receive your copy of Until Unity by Francis Chan for your partnering gift please click here. https://www.equip.org/product/cri-resource-cri2105hup/Topics discussed include: Is Christian unity possible? Visit https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sales-coaching-board-level-discussion-richard-smith if you question this fact. Dynamic coaching can deliver a 27.6% improvement in win rates for forecasted deals. Even a formal approach to coaching can deliver a 13.5% improvement in win rates. (CSO Insights) Those sales people who aren’t coached are 27% MORE likely to miss quota than those who are coached. #RichardSmith is Sales Director at #Refract.ai. Refract record and analyse sales calls and coaching calls to help managers improve their coaching of their salespeople. Their AI analyses the call and helps managers pinpoint teachable moments drawing on the millions of calls from which they have captured.  What was the talk time balance? Use of verbs and adjectives? How silence was used (or more likely NOT used!)? Emphasis, nuance, when specific topics are brought up in the call e.g. price, competitors, specific objections and how they were handled or neutralised. Coaching is NOT an option if you want to see performance of your salespeople rise. It is an act of gross negligence by you as the manager to fail to coach your people. It is an act of stupidity, ignorance and idiocy (am I making the point forcefully enough?) and should be seen as an act of gross misconduct. Leaders, you are not free of blame. Stop over-burdening sales managers, who have the most precarious position in your business with utterly onanistic reporting to feed your bean counters with data that is frankly inaccurate and often potentially harmful to feed your bad decisions. Making investment decisions based on forecasts that a Voodoo soothsayer could do a better job of predicting than your salespeople is utter lunacy. If you’ve ever purchased lipstick, moisturizer, or fragrance in a box, the packaging was likely created by Arkay. They’ve been in business for more than 96 years. Today, they send high-end packaging all over the world from their three locations on the east coast. Mitchell assumed leadership of Arkay in 1996 when he was 30 years old. He gained notoriety 14 years later following the release of his book, Taking Over: Insider Tips from a Third Generation CEO. The book shares his personal story, including a letter he wrote to his father asking him leave the business, along with stories from other families who struggled through leadership transitions. The media headline at the time was Why I Fired My Father From the Family Business. In this episode, Mitchell and I talk about what it was like to fire his dad—someone he describes as both a seagull manager and a larger than life living legend in the packaging industry. Spoiler alert: Mitchell and his dad made it through the transition unscathed, in fact, they remain best friends today. We also discuss Mitchell’s leadership style, the keys to his success, and how he is introducing the family business to his teenage sons. Fun fact about Mitchell: He’s not only a fantastic leader, but also a rockstar! Outside of the office, he’s a bass player and vocalist with The Young Presidents. They are releasing their fourth album soon! Topics discussed in this episode: About Mitchell and Arkay Packaging (2:12) About the book (4:27) Working up the ranks (9:10) Preparing for leadership (12:35) Firing dad (and remaining best friends) (19:34) Mitch’s leadership style: Engage, empower, share (29:03) Monitoring vital signs (35:57) Outside specialists and consultants (41:57) Starting succession planning (49:46) Having hobbies as a leader (1:02:06) Health, wellness, and balance for leaders (1:08:36) How to find Mitchell (1:11:34) Bonus questions (1:13:07) Guest Bio: Mitchell Kaneff, author of Taking Over: Insider Tips from a Third- Generation CEO, is the Chairman/CEO of Arkay Packaging, a 96-year old, family–owned and operated leader in the folding carton industry. Under Mitchell’s direction, Arkay continues to be a market frontrunner in providing companies, such as Revlon/Elizabeth Arden, EsteeLauder, Procter & Gamble, and L’Oréal, with cutting-edge product packaging solutions. Mitchell’s appreciation for customer satisfaction and his understanding of the industry has solidified partnerships with key customers, earning Arkay “Supplier of the Year” awards several years running. In addition to locations in Hauppauge, New York and New York City, Arkay built a manufacturing facility in Roanoke, Virginia 22 years ago and in 2008 underwent an expansion to twice its size, a testament to leadership and the quality of the Arkay product. Mitchell lives in New York City with his twin 17-year old sons, Max and Josh, and his wife, Amy. Reframing Limiting Beliefs with Ellie Frey Zagel- 016

For the past couple of years, I’ve been doing a lot of personal work, self-reflection, and goal-setting. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m a big fan of Michael Hyatt, and one of the most powerful exercises that I’ve done with him is around limiting beliefs and liberating truths.   I like this definition of limiting beliefs from changingminds.org: “Limiting beliefs are those which constrain us in some way. Just by believing them, we do not think, do or say the things that they inhibit. And in doing so we impoverish our lives.” I also like the visual provided by this quote from Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander, authors of The Art of Possibility: “Every story you tell yourself is based on a network of assumptions. Draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view.” From my perspective, identifying and understanding your limiting beliefs is absolutely fundamental to achieving your goals. If you have a goal that seems out of reach—no matter how big or small—maybe now is the time to take a closer look at what is standing in your way. I hope that sharing my experiences and guiding you through an exercise in this podcast episode will help reframe your beliefs and move you forward to achieve what’s in your heart. You’ve got this! Topics discussed in this episode: Intro to limiting beliefs (:45) What are limiting beliefs? (1:45) My personal experience with limiting beliefs (2:45) Limiting beliefs exercise (8:43) Step One: Write down your goals (9:00) Step Two: List your limiting beliefs (9:42) An example from my life (12:02) Step 3: Turning limiting beliefs into liberating truths (17:00) Step 4: Create affirmations that shut down limiting beliefs (19:35) Wrap up and resources (20:09) Notable & Quotable: A limiting belief is something in your mind that is standing in your way of achieving something else. —Ellie Frey Zagel #successfulgenerations Identifying and understanding your limiting beliefs is fundamental to achieving your goals. —Ellie Frey Zagel #successfulgenerations Resources mentioned in this episode: Reframing Limiting Beliefs Worksheet Changing Minds definition of limiting beliefs The Art of Possibility by Rosamund Zander and Benjamin Zander Michael Hyatt’s description of limiting beliefs Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever Right-click and "Save As" to download this episode to your computer.
