Have you ever followed someone on Instagram just because of how their feed looks? And when you look at social media, and how people portray themselves, do you judge? Even quietly, to yourself? My dad always said not to get a facial piercing because people would judge; now imagine people of color who are judged by the color of their skin, their appearance, before they even have a chance to say a word. Today we are talking about what’s happening in the fashion industry with regards to Black Lives Matter. Even if you aren’t yourself into high fashion, you’ll appreciate what our conversation partner, fellow biracial woman - half Black half White Hope McGrath has to say about labels - both fashion labels and the ones we put on ourselves and each other when we ask “what ARE you?”- and how we can make choices that will help shift the tide when it comes to providing role models and access points for little girls and boys who don’t look like the leggy skinny White models that used to be the only thing we’d see. What to listen for:  Why Hope is both optimistic and sad about fashion’s newfound focus on #blacklivesmatter Some of the organizations that are instrumental in pushing for change in fashion’s approach to diversity, including the Fifteen Percent Pledge, and the Kelly Initiative Which companies have launched offensive products or inappropriate campaigns, and what we think we as individuals can do about them. Boycott H&M, for example. How this country is not used to seeing the biracial identity beyond Black and White, and is completely confused about how to handle people like Kamala Harris. Who, in our opinion, should be able to identify herself however she damn well pleases. Questions? Comments?  Contact us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com About Hope:  Hope McGrath is a creative entrepreneur & coach who is a catalyst for positive change. NEW FREE WORKSHOP ~> It's time for another Mailbag edition of the podcast! On these episodes, I take three listener submissions and give them tangible action steps on dealing with their current pressing issues and obstacles. One listener wrote in expressing frustration for catching her bestie in lie after lie and not knowing #WTF to do with that? I mean… just dump the friendship? But what if she apologizes profusely and expresses how important the friendship is to her? But, a lie's a lie, right? Maybe not. Another listener asked about navigating a sticky family situation where all the grandparents in her son's life are pretty much not interested in participating in his world. She has done everything in her power and now doesn't know how to best take care of her son (and herself) and the litany of emotions that comes up around this topic. You may be a bit surprised about what my answer is for this fam. Hint: It involves giving her son a shit-ton more power. Our final submission for this episode comes from a gal dealing with a verbally abusive sister who is also extremely nasty to their mother. Although this listener has boundaried her ass off with her sister, it pains her to watch her mom continue to be bullied. Tune in and hear one of my favorite tools to deal with the most insidious of family members. Even if you aren't in the exact situation as any of these Pod People, it's highly likely you've had to process something similar. Have a listen and snag some serious tools for boundaries, sticking up for yourself, and dealing with not-so-honest people. Welcome to the very first episode of the Radiant Mix podcast, with Hope McGrath. Hope has a blog called Radiant Mix, and with the podcast she will be celebrating and talking about the bi-racial, multi-racial, and multi-cultural life and experience and she will also be sharing some really wonderful stories around this theme. On the show today, Hope discusses some of the fears she's had around bringing the stories that she intends to share on the podcast to light, and she also explains what motivated her to launch the podcast. Listen in today to find out more about Hope's belief in the radiance of the mixed experience, and how she intends to make the world a better place. Hope's father is from Burundi, a small, Central African country near Rwanda. Her mother is American, with Italian and German/Jewish heritage. Her parents got married in the 1960s when racial mixing was still quite taboo. So, Hope comes from what is now known as 'The Loving Generation', which is a label for kids with one black, and one white parent, who were born after the 1967 case, Loving vs. Virginia, where the US Supreme Court overturned Virginia's ban on interracial marriage.  Although there is so much beauty to be found in mixing races and cultures, it's not without its challenges. Hope is living a multi-cultural life as a Brooklyn mamma raising a second-generation mix-kid, and she's also an auntie to a mix-kid. Her intention for Radiant Mix is to ignite positive change and maybe even open some eyes with the stories she will be sharing. Listen in today to find out more about Hope McGrath and her aspirations for the podcast. Show Highlights: The fears that Hope has around putting her stories out for public consumption. Why Hope eventually decided to launch Radiant Mix. For Hope, it's really all about radiating our light. How Hope managed to put her fears behind her. Hope talks about herself and where her family comes from. Where Hope discovered the title 'The Loving Generation'. Racial tension reached a fever-pitch in America recently, and this took a toll on Hope and her family. Hope hit her personal limit and decided to use her unique voice to aid in supporting anti-racism work through sharing a mixed perspective when the US president referred to Haiti and African nations as sh*thole countries. How Hope's hippy Mom inspired her to take her own path and expand minds and hearts, with her anti-racism work. When Hope grew up in Long Island, they were the only mixed family that she knew of in the area and the only mixed family attending the local public school. It was really hard for her to fit in while growing up. Hope has chosen to raise her daughter in a very different environment to the environment that she grew up in. Hope is doing her part, with Radiant Mix, to heal the racial divide. We all need to evolve from our judgment, bias, and prejudice. Why the conversation around racism has to continue. GET ON THE DEEP, DOWN + DIRTY VIP LIST!   Ever find yourself hoping and praying that something will work out in your favor? Maybe you're hoping a family function will go well, you get that job you've interviewed for, or perhaps you are hoping *that certain someone* you love will finally get clean and sober. And, although we've been taught that Hope is quite the virtue, I would argue that sometimes Hope destroys. (Yes, I actually just said that.) I think it's far less common to talk about the negative consequences of a life consumed in Hope. Now, don't get me wrong, I totally think Hope has it's place and can provide immense comfort, but I think it's worth examining when we use Hope as a crutch. As an excuse. As denial. Hoping that things work out but NOT making any solid plans of action. Hoping that your spouse will magically be what you need after expressing your needs over and over again and continually being let down... but, of course, hanging on to hope that he'll change. And let's not forget that when you place all your eggs in the Hope basket, you are likely giving all your power away to people and circumstances you can't control and ultimately you post-pone your happiness... You know, until X,Y, or Z happens... Because surely then, THEN you can be happy. Have a listen and see if you've been attached to Hope as a breath of inspiration and comfort or if you've allowed it to become a crutch of stagnation and self-sacrifice. Or... somewhere in-between. This pod explores: Why ‘Hope' isn't a strategy Think you're super hopeful? Why, from very early in his career, he always wanted to start his own PR firm How, from very early on, he planned his career to position himself to be able to set up his own firm Why James yearned for a career in consumer PR while working for then corporate PR shop Fishburn Hedges How James became MD of consumer PR firm 77 PR having never really worked in consumer PR Why James got together with Jo Carr to launch Hope&Glory Why James didn’t believe Hope&Glory was a massive risk Why confidence in yourself and your partner is critical in setting up your own firm How Hope&Glory have retained the feel and image of a fresh consumer shop in London Why successful consultancies must develop a broad range of work How James learnt the importance of getting Hope&Glory’s work talked about How does James retain his creative edge? But factual? I find that many people falsely assume that if they are in love with someone, then everything else should come really easily. Um… No. In this episode, I dig into why being soul-mates or being madly in love with each other doesn't always equal relationship success. When it comes to stroke, treatment is dependent on the stroke mechanism. But most patients wind up on aspirin anyway. Or Plavix (clopidogrel). And sometimes both. The question this week is, Why? Hope you're hungry for some fruit. We're comparing a bunch of apples to oranges in this episode of the BrainWaves podcast. Produced by James E. Siegler. Music by William Ross Chernoff's Nomads, Steve Combs, Rui, Little Glass Men, and Peter Rudenko. Voiceover by Erika Mejia. BrainWaves' podcasts and online content are intended for medical education only and should not be used for routine clinical decision making. Even if this episode is all about choosing aspirin or clopidogrel when you're treating stroke patients. Our Advent worship series - "Why? A Worship Journey to Christmas" series with, "Why Hope?" Drawing from Christ's words in Mark 13:24-37, we see the rationale that an Advent wreath begins with the candle of hope, for finding hope in anyone or anything other than Christ has profound and lasting implications.

Anna Willard is an author, personal trainer and the oldest child from a family of five.   From her personal exercise journey streaming from numerous sports and multiple injuries, she discovered hope through movement. After many injuries and failed goals she experienced how movement is medicine. Exercise and movement continue to give her hope and allow her to dream again and again! Understanding this power she works with women and men strengthening them on their journey towards a living a life beyond their dreams. Seeing first hand how hopes and dreams go hand in hand with physical fitness, she recently wrote her first book, Spark Your Youth.   I am so thankful to Anna for doing the interview with me, as she was facing her own personal crisis at the time we recorded.  It would have been easy and completely understandable for her to cancel the interview, but she felt it was important to honor HOPE, as she does in her book and to show up and share in order to instill HOPE in herself and others, even in the face of grief.   Listen in to hear Anna share:  How grief compelled her to take action in her life Why Hope, Dream, and Believe are her 3 words and why none of them can exist alone How falling victim to comparison is damaging to your true gifts How to get started if you’ve ever thought about writing a book   Links Mentioned: Anna’s Website: https://annawillard.com/ Anna’s Book: Spark Your Youth SMA Ep 22 Erin Brown: Letters to Lola

This message is to challenge the church to encourage and anchor hope in our children. This message addresses the question, “Why do so many children leave the church?” Besides passing the blame to parents or society, the church must consider what is lacking in their faith that causes adolescents to leave the church in adulthood. Holiness in the home is essential. From where does that holiness come? This message presents some essential points from the Scripture to secure our children including the need for a believing parent in the home, fathers who do not embitter their children, and parents who can evangelize the Gospel to their own children. However, one may observe the lack of holy living among young believers. Why? Hope and its resulting holiness are an essential conviction for parents and the church to pass onto their children. Christians must hope in eternal life through Jesus’s resurrection. Our children need the hope that is the anchor of the soul. “When you walk in faith… you just don’t fail.” Mark in addition to being the man who does all of the I.T work for Warrior Rise, is also a real, authentic and vulnerable man who is walking in faith getting stronger every day. Mark is a man who has had his struggles, has backslidden at times and let the world get in the way at times before coming back to the Lord. Why? Hope. In Mark’s words, the overarching message of the gospel is hope and it is that hope that has helped Mark get through the struggles and challenges that have come at him.
