Pod People, we went to a film festival! Well, kind of. As we did last year, we bought virtual Sundance Film Festival tickets and had the chance to catch Didn't Die, an apocalyptic zombie flick directed by Meera Menon. We discuss the film's obvious nods to George Romero, the different ways we as humans cope with tragedy, Indian representation in horror, how zombie movies just feel more real since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.Didn't Die is currently on the film festival circuit, so it isn't available to stream at this time. We do discuss some of the plot, most of which can be surmised in trailers for the film, but we were conscious not to spoil some of the twists and surprises in the film. We're back for Season 3, Pod People! Did you miss us? We missed you! We're kicking off 2025 with a true mindfuck of a film, which feels very apropos given...well, everything. So settle in as we discuss Greg Jardin's It's What's Inside, which is currently streaming on Netflix. It's a body-swapping good time and a story that examines bodily autonomy, the fluidity of memory, and those feelings you have for your ex or the person you wish you'd gotten together with when you had the opportunity. The script and cinematography are clutch, too! Comic lovers, this episode is for you! It was our pleasure to have Jordan Morris, comic author, comedian, and podcaster, on the show to discuss his recently published graphic novel, Youth Group. We discuss the comics that introduced us to thought bubbles and visual storytelling, Bowen "Bones" McCurdy's incredible artwork, writing comedy for print, the way youth groups were always relegated to hip, underground spaces in the 90s, some truly gnarly demonic entities, and working together to take down the big bad. Also, Nikki had a ton of fun creating sound effects and stings for this episode! Purchase Youth Group wherever you get your comics! Buy links below, or hit up your local comics store for a copy. In this episode, we laugh, cry, and philosophize with Callie Ott, an incredible actress, comedian, and the creator of Final Girl: The Musical, which debuted at the Hollywood Fringe Festival earlier this year. Inspired by true events, the one-woman show combines side-splitting humor and poignant explorations of toxic relationships and cycles of abuse through the lens of the final girl trope. We discuss Callie's lifelong love for the horror genre, the physical and emotional stamina you need to perform such an impactful one-person show (with 11 musical numbers!), the incredible healing power of art, and how talking candidly about our experiences can stop cycles of abuse. Despite the heavy subject matter, there is a lot of laughter! The episode also ends with a recording of one of the musical numbers from Final Girl, "Exorcise My Boyfriend."Content warning: This episode contains frank discussions of suicide, intimate partner abuse, and sexual assault. While appearing to be a 'remake' of a beloved 1956 thriller, based on a 1955 novel, but much like the Pod People, there's way more to the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers than what appears on the surface. Starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum, and Veronica Cartwright and Directed by Philip Kaufman. It's one of the best movies we've ever covered and deserves to be watched in the Halloween season. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegenxfiles/support
