"Work smarter not harder." Being Great At Multiple Things Raised in rural Greenwood, Maine (population 802), where “people thought I was nuts running all the time,” Anna was state high school champion in cross country and track. She was also a shooting guard on the basketball team, good enough to be recruited by a couple of Division III colleges. Track was her first love, though (“Plus I’m 5-3, what am I going to do in basketball?”) so it was off to Brown University to run track. A 2006 Brown graduate with a degree in environmental studies, Anna ran her first steeplechase as a junior, filling in for an injured teammate on just two weeks of training. She broke the school record in her first race. By the time she was finished at Brown, Anna would hold 10 school records and was named 2006 All-Ivy First Team in athletics. It was in her final outdoor season of eligibility, which she used at the University of Michigan while earn- ing a master’s degree in sports management, that Anna really came into her own. The new Wolver-ine broke the collegiate record in the steeplechase on her way to winning the 2007 NCAA title. Anna was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year after winning titles in the steeple, 1500m and 5000m and the top female performer at the Penn Relays for her contribution to NCAA records in the 4x800m and 4x1500m relays. Anna was also honored at Michigan’s 2006-2007 Female Athlete of the Year. In 2008, Anna won the US Olympic Trials in a then-American Record time of 9:27.59. In 2009, Anna was undefeated over 800m and ended the year as the third fastest American ever over 1500m. By the end of the season, Anna had earned world rankings in three different events. In this episode, Nick talks with Anna about making their first world championship team, transitioning from athlete to coach and being great at multiple things. Dr. Derek McNeil shares his insight about Hope during dark moments in life, the importance of being alone while healing from trauma, and the relationship between body work while healing the mind and the spirit. Fall of 2017 there was a school shooting at Freeman High School, the school where Anna Willard graduated from, the school where her mother works as a school nurse and where her baby brother attends. Shocked and devastated with this traumatic event she found comfort within the strength of the Freeman community. Inspired by the teachers and the community, Anna Willard interviewed Kenny Davis. He is a retired history teacher, high school coach of various sports, and is still kicking it as a referee for basketball ranging from 6th grade to the NCAA as he enter into his 60’s the prime of his life. He shares his wisdom as a teacher and coach, and how to age well through strength and stretching programs. In this interview you will hear a vast amount of insight to live your best life. . . things like . . . “Even though there are times as a coach you’re not be successful, you are successful” “No matter what you do you have to have self-discipline in order to be accomplished” Throughout the conversation they dove into the affects of the school shooting and how to move forward from the devastated event within a small community, how to manage strength and courage, and how to process the trauma of death through one’s health. We shared the critical role he played in my life during my sophomore year of high school and how he still plays an important role for Freeman students. Anna Willard is an author, personal trainer and the oldest child from a family of five. From her personal exercise journey streaming from numerous sports and multiple injuries, she discovered hope through movement. After many injuries and failed goals she experienced how movement is medicine. Exercise and movement continue to give her hope and allow her to dream again and again! Understanding this power she works with women and men strengthening them on their journey towards a living a life beyond their dreams. Seeing first hand how hopes and dreams go hand in hand with physical fitness, she recently wrote her first book, Spark Your Youth. I am so thankful to Anna for doing the interview with me, as she was facing her own personal crisis at the time we recorded. It would have been easy and completely understandable for her to cancel the interview, but she felt it was important to honor HOPE, as she does in her book and to show up and share in order to instill HOPE in herself and others, even in the face of grief.
