Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2024 46:11

One. More. Thing. One more thing and you may just lose your god-damned mind. If one more person asks something of you… If one more task gets added to your to-do list… You may just Lose. Your. Shit. We've all been in this crazy-ass-stressed-the-fuck-out place where we become, uh-hem, a little less than the best version of ourselves. We scream at our kids when they need something minimal. We lash out at our spouse, or friend, or co-worker when they are just trying to help. In essence, we become somewhat addicted to being super stressed out and overwhelmed.  Here's the unique thing about navigating modern stressors… When our primitive ancestors were dealing with some kind of threat, let's say a lion, they would have a sharp spike of stress, handle the stressful situation (escape the lion) and then easily be able to access a calm, tranquil space. Essentially, they were able to complete the entire stress response cycle. But now we are in many stressful situations that simply don't stop. #rememberCovid Whether it be traffic, dealing with a high-demand job, feeling threatened in your interpersonal relationships, or being stressed out about the state of the world, it's highly likely that you've been existing in your sympathetic nervous system which our bodies respond to like we're constantly running from lions. It's basically really, really fucking detrimental to our nervous systems. If this sounds like I have a hidden camera installed in your place, you need to have a listen to this week's pod. BTW, no camera (#creepy)… I've just been in this place far too many times to count. And in this episode, I discuss what spikes our fear/stress response and share a slew of simple things you can do to let go of the fear, stress, and mortal combat that may be driving you to the brink of insanity. Say hello to some serious peace, tranquility, and happy dances. This pod explores: Understanding how our fear is simply trying to keep us safe (even though it's a shitty communicator) 10+ easy ways to immediately relieve your stress My P.O.D. method for navigating extreme fear, overwhelm, and stress How to start asking for help… even if you really hate asking for help. And how that can be a fierce act of feminism.   GRAB YOUR FREE WORKSHEETS THAT ACCOMPANY THIS EPISODE This episode is part of a limited, 6-part podcast series teaching you all the tools and strategies you need to kick your confidence and self-worth into high gear. I've also created detailed (and #gorge) worksheets to accompany each episode in the series to aid you in cementing all your ah-ha moments and anchor in lasting change.  Recent scientific studies have shown that taking pen to paper helps the brain retain information substantially more than listening alone. Tell me if this sounds familiar: You have “this friend”… and perhaps this is someone you've known forever, maybe you saw each other through some tough times, but at this particular place in your life, this friendship has been feeling strained, frustrating, and sometimes downright toxic. But you guilt yourself saying, “Well, we've been friends since college” or “Am I a dick if I don't want to be there for her anymore?” If that sounds at all familiar, you are in the same boat that many people find themselves in when they reach their 30s and 40s and beyond. You've grown as a person, your life has changed, and your priorities have shifted. But, you still feel tethered to this historical relationship that feels more like it's robbing you dry than adding to your fulfillment. A listener of the show wrote to the pod asking how to actually let go of one of these friendships. I mean, how do you go about breaking up with a friend? Is there an approach? How do you know if you're being a big ‘ol meanie? If you've been pulled to part ways with a friendship, but have no idea what-the-hell that really looks like, you may want to have a listen. I discuss six major concepts to keep in mind (you know, to keep your shit straight) and two specific methods you can take to pull the trigger on the “break up”. Additionally, I walk you through how to deal if someone breaks up with you (or simply just ghosts you). This pod explores: How to tap into the “real” reason you're looking to end the friendship How to get connected to the way you need to conduct yourself so you're proud of your own behavior (even if the other person loses their shit) Two specific methods to “break up” with this unfulfilling friendship Four steps to aid in your healing if someone has broken up with you or isn't communicating with you any longer   PERKS FOR THE POD-IENCE This podcast is sponsored by LetsGetChecked and The Bold-Faced Truth Podcast listeners get a whoppin' 30% off their first test kit of choice at trylgc.com/boldtruth or simply enter code boldtruth at checkout. [EXPERT] EP499 - THE 'D' WORD: MAKING THE ULTIMATE DECISION ABOUT YOUR MARRIAGE WITH KATE ANTHONY

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2024 53:55

Every single year, over 1 million women question leaving their marriage. And nearly 70 percent of all divorces are initiated by women. And it's no wonder – Marriage makes men's lives exponentially easier while it makes women's lives drastically harder. It is clear that ‘traditional' marriage dynamics are no longer tenable for American women.  Years ago, I remember having a chat with a friend where she was lamenting that she should be grateful her husband wasn't cavorting around, cheating on her, abusing substances, or screaming obscenities at her. I clearly remember her saying, “Wow, the bar is set pretty damn low.” Seriously. Not being abused should be a given, not something to be celebrated.  In my near two decades of coaching, I have found myriad women frustrated, overwhelmed, and downright furious about the inequity in their marriage. Whilst doing all the domestic labor, holding down impressive careers, and digging deep into therapy and personal development, these women often find themselves lonely, heartbroken, and baffled at the lack of ownership and responsibility their partners were exhibiting in the relationship. No wonder recent studies cite single women without children being the happiest in our society. In this week's episode, I chat with my close pal and colleague, Kate Anthony, who has just penned a book entitled, “The ‘D' Word: Making the Ultimate Decision about Your Marriage”. Kate talks with me about her own divorce journey, shares about debunked studies citing divorce negatively affects children, understanding narcissism, and the courageous choice not to settle for subpar relationships. Have a listen and gain more insight on if you should stay or if you should go. This pod explores: Understanding various forms of abuse and the unexpected way financial abuse shows up  The faulty and unfounded research that propagated the notion that you should “stay together for the kids” and what new research has found Why trying to “just communicate more effectively” isn't working for you and what to focus on instead The curious place we are in history where the gender dynamics of marriage are changing dramatically   PERKS FOR THE POD-IENCE This podcast is sponsored by LetsGetChecked and The Bold-Faced Truth Podcast listeners get a whoppin' 30% off their first test kit of choice at trylgc.com/boldtruth or simply enter code boldtruth at checkout. But what actually makes those goals a reality?  Throughout my 15+ years in this work, I have found that noble intentions have very little to do with bringing goals to fruition. Good ol' fashioned gumption and desire are not enough to make your dreams come true. [sad trombone] In fact, a recent Inc.com article indicated that only 8% of people actually accomplish their goals. You get super jelly that your partner gets to have extra time off work, so you say (in a snarky-ass tone), “Wow. Must be nice to have so much free time”. Or maybe a work group you're a part of is trying to decide how to handle a specific project and instead of voicing your true thoughts you say, “We can certainly do it your way” and mutter under you breath, “And good fucking luck with that.”  What we have here, folks, are two examples of the Passive-Aggressive Communication Style. Everyone's fav. But, even though we find it infuriating, many of us do it ourselves aaaaaall the time. If you weren't properly taught how to advocate for your own wants, needs, and opinions [spoiler: none of us were], it's likely that you find yourself falling into one of the less-than-effective communication styles. You know *that thing* when you get totally caught off guard by a request and don't know how to say “No”, so you say, “Um, yeah, sure. Totally”? Or how ‘bout this one: You know you need to address something with your bestie by you keep thinking, “Am I overreacting? Am I being dramatic? I feel like I should say something, but I'm so nervous!” Or maybe your boss walks into your office and asks for another report to be completed and instead of saying “I don't think I can add one more thing to my plate”, you just verbally list out a litany of things that you have to accomplish, hoping that she'll magically get your drift. Real talk. No one teaches us how to articulate our thoughts, feelings, needs, and opinions in an effective manner. We stumble around thinking we can't ever let anyone down and god forbid we actually say “No”! Recently, in one of my programs, the topic came up about how our relationships start to change as we get further and further into personal development. Sometimes you come up against some opposition from a handful of peeps in your life who don't really love the “new, empowered you”… The “you” who is setting boundaries. The “you” who is standing up for themselves and knows how they deserve to be treated.  But… something we haven't talked about as much on the pod is the multitude of other ways that your relationships start to change as you begin to grow and take a stand for yourself – When you start to actually believe that you're “enough”. And, often, when you're in the painful, murky waters of looking at all of your shit, you just want to know that something good is going to be on the other side. I mean… tell me that I will love my life even if I'm setting all these boundaries… it won't always be this hard, right? RIGHT!?  So, this week, I thought I would dig into 6 ways that a strong sense of self-worth radically impacts your relationships For. The. Better. So, you can look at this journey through the lens of what you're gaining instead of what feels painful. Have a listen and change your perspective on this roller coaster we call Personal Growth. This pod explores: How valuing yourself changes how you address what you need in any given relationship How worthiness changes how much you blame others (like, if only my mom wasn't such a nag… ) How a strong self-worth changes the sorts of relationships you are willing to tolerate The absolute BEST side effect of cultivating your worth and self-love (Hint: It involves other badasses) WORTHY. Have you ever wanted to change a belief about yourself and so you gather up all your new-founded enthusiasm and hope and begin diligently repeating positive mantras to yourself? But your enthusiasm is short-lived because the minute you begin speaking kindly to yourself, your inner shit-talker jumps in and tells you how ridiculous this whole self-talk thing is and how cute that you think you can do a damn thing about your lack of self-worth. If you've ever rolled your eyes at someone telling you to “just think positively” and you're like, “Wow! I never thought of that!” then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Here's the deal: What we want to believe consciously doesn't matter… like at all, UNLESS it's congruent with the beliefs in your subconscious mind. So if you have a deep seated belief that you aren't ‘enough' and you try to tell yourself otherwise, the beliefs in the subconscious mind will win every time. Every. Time. So how-the-hell does one change a belief that has a death grip on the subconscious mind? So glad you asked. Perhaps you've been having a difficult time finding a job and the stress you've been feeling has you non-stop thinking how you mess everything up. Or that you simply aren't smart enough. Or maybe you had a friend distance themselves from you and you interpret the hurt you feel to mean you aren't worth being friends with. When we are feeling uncomfortable emotions, it can be so easy to immediately conclude that we aren't worthy, lovable, or deserving of the life we want. Our emotions are fleeting experiences, yet we often create a lasting, all-encompassing story about who we are. As in, if this person doesn't love me, I must not be lovable. The first experience is a fleeting life situation with short-term emotions, so why do we make up a bullshit story that we carry through the rest of our lives? In this episode, I look at the difference between the emotions we feel around not being “enough” and how that differs from a deep-seated belief that you aren't enough. This is a deep dive on emotional intelligence, how to feel through hardship to gain healing, and why you are never, ever wrong for what you feel. When I'm a guest on podcasts, I am frequently asked, What does speaking up have to do with self-worth? What is the connection? What do they have to do with one another? I get it… It seems like we silo many personal development topics without looking at how they directly connect with one another. Or how they impact one another. In this episode, I discuss how the act of speaking up for yourself or establishing boundaries can directly influence how worthy you feel. Think about it like this: Do you think most people who are confident, love themselves, and believe they are ‘enough' have a difficult time speaking up for themselves? No, Not really. When you are truly anchored into the belief that you really, truly matter, it's not likely you'll be phased by folks not liking what you have to say.  Additionally, I discuss how soooo many cards have been stacked against women as they fight to find their intrinsic “enoughness”. In fact, almost everywhere you turn you are being told that you are certainly not thin enough, successful enough, a good enough parent, you name it. We'll look at how the subconscious mind impacts your belief about yourself, how to figure out the folks in your life who prefer the people-pleasing version of you (yikes!), and the first step you can take to give a little booster shot to your self-worth. This pod explores: The message you send to your subconscious mind every time you're afraid to speak up for yourself [hint: it's not good] How to figure out who benefits from you staying quiet The four major categories you must address if you want to change the belief that you aren't enough Understanding the impact of social hierarchies on self-worth and how you can create radical change by establishing boundaries GET ON THE VIP LIST!       Because we live in a culture that values logic, reason, and rationale over intuition, it is likely you have come across individuals who are leery (or even fearful) of psychics, mediums, and the healing and lessons gleaned from such modalities. Maybe you have always been curious if your loved ones are still with you or if you could connect with your spirit guides to aid you in making a challenging decision. Maybe you receive messages that seemingly come out of nowhere, but you don't want to be ‘silly' and give them any credence. Maybe you have a difficult ailment or disease that has been bothering you and you'd love to know if there is any deeper meaning behind this struggle.  So much clarity, healing, and comfort can be accessed by working with a skilled medium or psychic who is capable of conducting past life regressions. I first learned about this process in Hypnotherapy school and I was eager to learn more. What support can we gather from a past life? Is that even real? Aren't people just making up stories about their past lives? Seems a bit too woo, right? Or perhaps we live in a culture that doesn't encourage spirituality, leaning on your intuition, and connecting with others on a spiritual plane. Maybe that's why it seems a bit “out there”. Rounding out our final episode in our Spirituality Series, I called up my pal, Denise Correll, who is an Evidential Medium and Psychic to get her take on Past Life Regression and how that relates to mental health and wellness. Denise explains how she works with “Blending” to express messages from those who have passed on, the boundaries she has to establish so as to not overload herself with persistent energies, and if she has ever had to fire one of her spirit guides. This is a juicy one you won't want to miss! This pod explores: Denise's favorite tools to help you tap into your psychic ability (and it's actually super simple) Understanding the “Auric Field” and how we absorb energies of those around us… Hello, Energy Vampires! It's likely you've seen psychics or mediums on television or on social media (Hi, Tyler Henry!) but that's about as far as mainstream media goes in discussing spiritual matters outside of religion. Until fairly recently I couldn't tell you what the “Four Clairs” are (as in… CLAIRvoyant, etc.) or distinguish the difference between channeling or mediumship. Because this realm of spirituality was demonized (quite literally) for me growing up, I have an increased fascination and curiosity about various spiritual modalities.  Perhaps you are the same. I have found that many of the women I work with are very curious about experiencing a spiritual world outside of religion. Perhaps you speculate about what happens when we die. Maybe you wonder if you are receiving signs from loved ones who have passed on. Or perhaps you would like to learn more about spirit and angel guides. Maybe you even connect with them regularly without really realizing it. Furthering our series on Spirituality, I give a call to my pal Michaela McGivern who is a psychic, a medium, and an energy healer with over two decades of experience. We talk about Michaela's difficult childhood and how she dealt with her gifts while hiding them from her family, the easiest way to connect with loved ones who have passed, and how connecting with the afterlife can allow access to unbelievable healing. Packed with woo and even more love, this episode is a must-hear. When Suzanne Falter's daughter suffered an unexpected and unexplainable cardiac arrest at the fragile age of twenty-two, she had no idea that her daughter's death would open up a completely different world to her. She never thought that ten years later she would write a book on the many lessons her daughter, Teal, would teach her from the afterlife. At the time of her daughter's passing, Suzanne was in the throes of hustle culture – doing, doing, doing, so much so that she couldn't be bothered to look up from her work to enjoy a sunset.  I wanted to bring Suzanne on the show to talk about the precious experiences she has had communicating with Teal from beyond the grave and how that informs the work she does in the world. In this tender and intimate discussion, I share some of my own experiences of communicating with my father who has passed and how meaning and guidance is often all around us… we only need to get out of our way to see them.  We talk about what it means to truly surrender, what to do if you feel like you suck at meditation, and how to let go of all the stress, overwhelm, and worry that clouds you from operating at high vibration. In Suzanne's memoir, entitled Free Spirited, she writes, “First she would have to die, then I would as well so we'd both be reborn in completely different ways.” If you like the idea of connecting with the afterlife or your spirit guides but have no idea where to start, you won't want to miss this one. This pod explores: The messages Suzanne received from her daughter during the 6 days she was in a coma What it truly means to surrender and why so many of us don't do it How Suzanne has learned to channel and communicate with her daughter and her spirit guides (even though she resisted it for so long) The absolute first place you need to start to cultivate a strong spiritual self and connect with your loved ones who have passed on _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! [DIAL AN EXPERT] EP#483 - Alcohol, Addiction, + Reframing Shame With Annie Grace

Did you know that alcohol is addictive… to everyone? Not just those with “addictive personalities” (which may not even be a real thing), but literally everyone. All human bodies. And did you know that alcohol is a carcinogen? As in, it fucking CAUSES CANCER? How ‘bout this one… did you know that the word “alcoholic” is an outdated term and experts categorize alcohol consumption as Alcohol Use Disorder, which of course has a broad spectrum. Did you know that nearly anyone who drinks alcohol, even in “moderation” would be categorized as having Alcohol Use Disorder? Whoa. This week on the show, I'm chatting with Annie Grace who is one of the most predominant voices in the alcohol-free movement. Until I stumbled on Annie's work, I had no idea that alcohol was addictive for everyone, let alone that it can cause cancer. And how would I? Every other item we consume from food to cigarettes to prescription drugs come with a host of information and warnings. But alcohol? Nope. You basically get the alcohol content and that's about it. No warnings. No “hey, this shit could be the death of you!” or anything. And, let's not forget that our culture sexifies everything surrounding alcohol… it makes you relax, you can escape your kids/stress/problems, you are wildly more entertaining, and of course, you are way more attractive. In this candid conversation, I chat with Annie about her personal relationship with alcohol, recent neuroscience highlighting efficacy in behavioral change (aka why white-knucking doesn't work), and your first place to start if you want to get more curious and intentional about how much alcohol you consume.  This pod explores: How to use Annie's ACT technique when processing uncomfortable emotion The role self-trust plays in your relationship to substances Why the term “alcoholic” can be hugely problematic in certain cases How to remove (or scale down) on the shame and blame involved with being alcohol-free _____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! After a secret, six-year love affair with prescription drugs and alcohol, Laura Cathcart Robbins begrudgingly checked herself in rehab. She knew that if she had any hope of a future and any hope of parenting her precious children, she needed to get some help. And, fast. And the timing couldn't have been worse. She was in the beginning stages of what could potentially be a horribly contentious divorce and had just signed on to a prestigious community position. In the space of a short ten months, Laura had ended a very high-profile marriage, went to rehab, got sober and fell in love.  This week on the show, I chat with Laura about the chronology of her addiction, including a brief stint with freebasing cocaine, hiding pills and booze in a vault of shoe boxes, and terror she felt when she realized that her maternal instinct to caretake for her children, THE driving force in her life, was now superseded by the drive to get high. The strongest pull she had ever known was now dethroned by the urge to use.  In this candid and unabashed interview, Laura shares her elitism around her addiction and how that kept her from getting the help she needed, her defense tactic of stonewalling others, and how she healed herself from taking ten Ambien daily… washed down with a few shots of Vodka. We discuss how her perspective on intimacy and vulnerability has changed in her relationships now that she's in recovery, the role race and privilege played in her addiction, and the first step you should take if you are concerned about your substance use. This pod explores: Understanding the difference between privacy and secrecy and how addiction thrives in secrecy How Laura defines addiction and how it shows up in our work, fitness, and relationships How Laura opened up to vulnerability and what her first step was (spoiler: you can do it to) Exploring the lack of Black and Brown voices the recovery space and how Laura is shifting that paradigm _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! So you've been stressed the-f-out, constantly overwhelmed and anxious and you've been noticing that this constant state of hustle, hustle, hustle, is starting to feel like your new normal. Only it's not normal. You're wondering if this is what burnout feels like. And your entire nervous system is screaming at you to slooooooow down. In fact, sometimes when you have down time you're in such a heightened state, that you have a hellova time calming down… reaching for something to “do” while you relax. But, what is actually happening in your nervous system? Many times, when we get into these states of stress, we blame either ourselves, for taking on too much or not being able to handle enough, or we blame external forces. We think that it's our boss's fault or our partner's fault, and whilst there may be some culpable parties, blame really doesn't ever help you feel better. And being pissed that you're anxious hasn't really helped either. But, if you really understood what was happening in your nervous system, you could utilize tools to self-regulate or co-regulate.  Ok, great. But wtf does this really look like? I heard something pretty profound recently – Something that shocked the shit out of me, if I'm honest. I was watching a TikTok video where a Naturopathic Doctor was discussing the three things related to hormones she intends to teach her daughter when she grows up. You know what number one was? She said, “I'm going to be sure she knows that painful periods are NOT NORMAL.” Wait, what!? As I began to scour this woman's vids, I started to see a trend… many of the symptoms I experience around my period or even in my everyday life are actually totally treatable. In fact, this doc tends to see her patients dramatically (if not permanently) eradicate their symptoms in just 2-3 menstrual cycles. WHOA. So, of course, I'm all perked up and listening. If you're anything like me, it's likely you don't know one woman who isn't at least mildly concerned about what her body looks like. Our society and culture have created a very strong and lasting message that the value placed on women is in their appearance: how thin, how beautiful, and often how white they can be. What a sad, small box we've been placed into and I, for one, get so fucking livid about how much time I spend worrying about my insecurities that are making other people rich. Especially when I could use that brain power to build my empire, amiright!? So, where does one start? How do you start making peace with the body you reside in and move toward a loving relationship with yourself? Do you just chant a bunch of body positive affirmations in the mirror and hope for a magical shift? Not exactly. On this week's show, I dial up Chardét Ryel, an author, wellness entrepreneur and Behaviour Change Specialist, empowering women globally with body confidence and well-being stripped of the rules. Hello! Let's get some of that. In this conversation, Chardét and I talk about how important it is to analyze your motivation behind your pull to work out, eat “healthy”, and make changes to your appearance. We also discuss the concept of “acceptance” and how so many of us want to jump straight to loving ourselves without doing the work necessary to simply remain neutral. She also walks us through her signature 7-step process to feeling good in your nakedness! You in? Let's go. This pod explores: Understanding what diet culture actually IS and how it disempowers women and women of color in particular Chardét's 7-step process to feeling good naked (and why it's about FEELING and not LOOKING good) The #1 question you must ask yourself if you want to get anywhere in your body love process Chardét's favorite assignment for those wanting to accept and love their body (and why most people reeeeeally resist doing it) ________ WANNA HANG WITH ME IN MEXICO? As we grow through our teen years into adulthood, it's not uncommon to find a wealth of information about puberty, pregnancy, and infertility. Those transitions and obstacles are readily talked about and addressed.  But, our shifts in hormones are clearly not done after our thirties and sadly, our society has done women a massive disservice in not properly setting us up with education and tools to navigate perimenopause and menopause… or even how to know if they're happening for you or not.  Add on the extreme stress of juggling careers, parenthood, ailing parents, and relationship struggles and many women find themselves in front of their doctors asking what the hell is happening to them. And sadly, the common western medical sentiment is to simply ride it out, lesson your stress (gag!), or start hormone therapy. There's got to be a better way! [infomercial voice] Fortunately, there is. This week on the show, I dial up Dana La Voie, a Tonic Herbalist & Acupuncturist who has spent her career helping women balance their hormones naturally. She has over 20 years of experience specializing in women's health and an over 90% success rate of getting women menopause relief. I mean… Yes, please! When told by older women that she would one day settle into her age and things would get easier, author Kaya Oakes thought, “Apparently at some point I would reach a magical age when I had ‘no fucks left to give.' But no one had warned me that before I hit that magical age, I'd have to survive my forties.” If it's not your face falling down, your bladder starting a coup, your hair falling out, or needing waaaaay too much sleep (I mean, this is unreasonable, isn't it?), then it's dealing with feeling invisible, grappling with your identity shifts, and wondering if it's only going to get worse. Now don't get me wrong, I know I have it easy. I know being in my forties is far from the end of the world. But something is for sure changing and I don't hear a bunch of folks talking about it. In fact, when I look at social media, television, or other media, middle-age women seem to be visible only when advertising fiber supplements. Try searching any stock photo site for middle-age women and you'll get a ton of women in their nineties… almost like we've been erased.  In this candid and very non-expert discussion, I chat with my very best friend, Andrea Owen, on what we've been processing as we process changes of mid-life. This episode is an inside look into two 40-somethings discussing what it feels like to constantly advocate for your health, reckon with physical changes, and what we actually love most about aging. If you've been wandering around like, “What is this body!? What is this life!?” then pull up an ear, my friend. You are not alone. You're cruisin' along, building a career, maybe raising some kids, and then BOOM! Everything gets thrown out of whack, your eggs shrivel up, and you're wondering who's body is this anyway? And, also am I fucking invisible? Navigating midlife isn't really something we're set up for… I mean, think about it. Ever feel like you just can't quite enjoy the holidays because you're in the middle of an emotional shitstorm that seems to make the season trying, stressful, and overwhelming? Maybe it's your first holiday after being newly divorced. Or maybe it's the fifth Christmas without your beloved mother, and you can't seem to understand why it's still so damn hard for you. Or perhaps you just moved your family across the country and although it was an amazing decision for you, you still find yourself incredibly nostalgic, overly emotional, and sensitive. If any of that sounds familiar, it's likely that there is something in your world that needs a little processing. (And, no, there's nothing wrong with you.) Perhaps what's tugging at you is the need for full-on grieving the loss of a loved one, which feels exacerbated by the sentimental tone of the holiday. Or perhaps it's as simple as “a case of the blues” because you've changed jobs and aren't able to do the gift exchange with your previous company you were with for ages. Whatever you may be going through in your life, if you've created any changes in patterns, it's likely there may be a bit (or a shit ton) of emotion to work through… especially during this time of year. Even if you don't think grief is called for, have a listen through this episode where I share six things you can do to work through all the “feels” you're having during this temperamental time. And, P.S. Dealing with your feels doesn't mean you're weak, too dramatic, or too sensitive. It just means you're fucking human. And brave. This pod explores: The real reason why you might be drinking too much, eating too much, or spending too much during the season The best way to set yourself up for success if you KNOW the holidays will make your current life circumstances extra tough How to let go of the past in a powerful way and create a new, empowered meaning behind the season Who you should (and should not) be turning to for support ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Ahhhhh, the holidays. The lovely time of year where your mom pesters you about why you don't go to church anymore. Or your aunt gives you shit for not having kids or not being married. Or your uncle gets in a heated (uncomfortable) “discussion” about gun rights. Your favorite, amiright? Or perhaps you're dreading the impending convo where your bro asks you for money. Again. Even though the holidays are supposed to be merry and bright, they can often be the most stressful when it comes to dealing with our families. Enter years of baggage, a shit-ton of guilt, mix in some alcohol, and you have a family holiday that leaves you feeling like shit instead of connected with those you supposedly love the most. If this sounds any kind of familiar, all is not lost. And, believe it or not, you can totally take back your holiday experience, boundary your ass off, and consciously CHOOSE your focus this holiday. Even if your sister is an ass-hat. This pod explores: How to prepare for your family function ahead of time to set you up for success… even if your family is giving the circus a run for their money What it *really* looks like to set up healthy boundaries and actually follow through on them How to avoid (or end) uncomfortable conversations with the utmost grace How to decide exactly what you want to focus on during the get-together… you know, so you can actually enjoy yourself #gladtidingsmuthafucka ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Let's say you want to go for a promotion at your work, but your inner voice keeps telling you that you're an imposter. Who are you to go for this job? Or maybe you are thinking of starting your own business, but you know you're lacking some serious confidence. Don't you have to be super confident right off the bat to do something like that? Or maybe you tried going back to school but you failed your first test so you threw in the towel and haven't been back since. When we talk about personal development topics like confidence, imposter complex, or navigating failure, we often think there is one specific trick or tool that will magically imbue us with all the confidence we desire, get rid of all our self-doubt, or make us immune to hardship. You know… just shittin' glitter over here. Sadly, that isn't the case. This week on the show I chat with my pal, Jane Atkinson, who shares a 5-part Thought Work Model which can help you bust through self-doubt, conjure some serious confidence, and contend with failure like a badass. If you have a hard time getting into an empowering mindset or tend to go down negative rabbit holes on tv or social media, you will definitely want to pull up an ear for this one. Or maybe it's that one guy you used to work with sharing about his amazing work promotion for his new, totally awesome company, and your mind starts GOING OFF about how you just aren't smart enough… not good enough… not accomplished enough. Just. Not. Enough. Maybe it's not even Facebook or Insta… although they can be BEASTS in the whole comparison thing. Maybe it's your co-worker, your neighbor, your bestie, or even your spouse that you constantly compare yourself to. And it usually ends the same way… with you CONVINCED that you totally suck. Most folks (maybe even you) who have a love affair with achievement and accomplishment, find that their tenacity and attachment to perfection has created a ton of significant success in their lives. Maybe they even wear the “over-achiever” label as a badge of honor. Sound like you? Maybe your constant striving and achieving has enabled you to succeed in school, your career, or in your community. But there can absolutely be a dark side to achievement.  The obsession to achieve and be perfect at all costs can cause significant impediment to your happiness. How easy is it for you to simply rest, recharge, and do absolutely nothing? [gasp!] How often do you stand in judgment for others who prioritize fun and play over productivity? [shit!] How often do you really celebrate your accomplishments? Most overachievers have a hard time accepting compliments or acknowledging their successes because they are so focused on what's next… What haven't I accomplished? Where am I lacking or coming up short? You may also have a hellova time actually slowing down and resting. I mean… you should at least be folding laundry if you're watching TV, right? In this deep dive episode, I explore the handful of reasons why we are so seduced by overachieving (hello, ‘not enoughness!'), the ramifications of a death grip on achievement, and five things you can do to make sure your achievement is always in service of you rather than stealing your joy. Don't worry… you don't have to become a slacker or anything… we're just going to explore when it's healthy and when it isn't. [DIAL AN EXPERT] EP#463 - Releasing A Toxic Relationship To Achievement + Goal-Setting With Tara Mcmullin

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You get a Bachelor's degree, but it doesn't really feel like enough, so you apply for a Master's program. You attain the Master's but turns out, it doesn't feel like enough either, so you start your own business. You set the goal to make six figures in your business, but when you achieve that marker, it somehow still doesn't feel like enough. Maybe the key to happiness is to attain seven figures in your biz? Or maybe the goal should be to get married… or have a baby… or lose fifty pounds. So, you set up more lofty goals. Because, if you aren't on a path toward attaining a big goal, what is your life even about? But, also, why haven't any of these goals created happiness? Like, when-the-fuck is happiness going to show up? Does that scenario sound like the strategy of achievement you've employed in your own life? Through societal influences, systems of oppression, and families of origin, we learn very early on that there are those who achieve (aka the GOOD folks) and there are those who don't (aka the BAD folks… the lazy losers). And, in a culture that glorifies hustle, wears burnout like a badge of honor, and focuses on capitalism and productivity, it's no wonder that so many of us collapse our entire sense of self-worth with what we accomplish.  What we lose sight of while we strive, and strive, and strive, is… what actually brings us happiness and fulfillment. This week on the show, I dial up Tara McMullin, a writer, podcaster, and producer, who has spent the last 13 years studying what makes small business owners tick. She has recently written her first book entitled, What Works: A Comprehensive Framework To Change The Way We Approach Goal Setting. In this chat, Tara and I discuss the myriad of influences telling us what we're “supposed to want” and what we “should” strive for and how to discern what is truly a desire of your heart. And, don't worry, you don't have to throw all your goals aways… Tara simply invites you to think critically about why you want to attain them to begin with.  This pod explore How capitalism has a vested interest in keeping us unfulfilled The origin of modern-day goal setting and how it can often steal your joy The intersection between the self help community and goal setting and how it can sometimes cause you to move farther away from yourself  How to use critical thinking to ensure your goals have your “informed consent” ____ LAST CALL TO APPLY FOR WORTHY.! Let's kick that shit to the curb, shall we? I'm about to open the doors for an exclusive, group-coaching immersion that will teach you the skills to access some serious “enoughness,” start believing in yourself, and speak up for yourself like a bold, boundaried badass. [AMY SAYS] EP#462 - What to Do When Your Parent Kinda Sucks

->>APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR WORTHY. Perhaps some of the most challenging relationships we have in our lives are those with our own parents. Although we love them deeply, they are oftentimes the ones who present the most “issues” in our worlds and who tend to drive us the most batty. You feel me? I've worked with many students and clients who have the hardest time figuring out if they should sever a relationship with a parent, try to work on it, try to establish boundaries, or just give up on the whole thing altogether. Maybe you have found yourself tolerating shitty behavior from a parent because they had a horrible upbringing themselves or you've bought into the notion that “blood is thicker than water” so you let them get away with things you would never allow from someone you weren't related to. We tend to emotionally regress around our parents which leaves us feeling inadequate, cowardly, and helpless. This sort of parental frustration is suuuuuper common and I'm sure you're no stranger to a similar dynamic. In this episode, I offer seven concepts to help you address a parent who is actually kind of an asshole and/or you aren't fully sure you want in your life any longer. Unless you have a super flawless relationship with your parents (and if you do, bless you, and go thank them RIGHT NOW), then this pod is a MUST. Plus, many of these concepts can be applied to other challenging relationships in your life. This pod explores: Understanding the multiple emotions you have around your parents and why that's okay How to figure out the role you want a less-than-stellar parent to have in your life What to say if other family members want to get involved and ask you about the issue How to figure out exactly what you need from your parent and how to ask for it (and when not to) APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN! [DIAL AN EXPERT] EP#461 - Dealing with Parental Trauma with Alexa Rae Schiefer

We've all heard of our inner child, right? That wounded inner child who is still reckoning with incidents occurring in our childhood. But, have you ever heard of your “outer child”? Tell me if this sounds familiar: You are going back home to visit your family and the minute you get around your parents, it's like you're 16 all over again. You're angsty, everything is unfair, and you just want to burn incense and listen to music, yet hanging out with your fam makes you want to lash out and yell and scream and maybe break a lava lamp. And suddenly all of the coping mechanisms you've learned in decades of therapy are out the window. This, my friend, is your Outer Child. It's a way in which we regress to earlier versions of ourselves and act out from that place when surrounded by triggering people. And, let's face it, it's often our family. In this week's episode, I dial up Alexa Rae Schiefer, Trauma Coach and former mental health clinician, to ask her some heavy-hitting questions around the trauma we incur from our primary caregivers. We dig into the concept of “Parentification Trauma”, the inner and outer child, what trauma responses tend to look like, and what the hell a Window of Tolerance is and why we should be aware of it. Alexa Rae and I also discuss what it means to self-soothe and how that process can vary depending on what trauma you are up against. We chat about processing the trauma of our childhoods and how, more often than not, we are trying to pretend we don't have any trauma. Yeah, ok. How's that working out? We even talk about what-the-hell trauma even is. If you know you've got a wound, or two, or twenty, to process from your childhood, be sure to grab a pen and paper. This is a good one.  This pod explores: The definition of trauma and how we all pretty much have it Understanding Parentification Trauma and how that influences your behavior later on in life What common trauma responses look like and what you can do about them Understanding Abandonment Wounds and how they show up in our lives _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT!
