Today we're talking about boundaries with my good friend, Amy E. Smith. If you have a history of constantly putting everybody first, giving in, or not speaking up when something is bothersome to you, then you, my love, need to set some boundaries. In this episode, Amy shares her three-step process for boundary setting, shares some thought-provoking lessons like, “You are not responsible for other people's reactions to your boundaries,” and talks about how to stand up for yourself without being a dick.  Amy is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Founder of TheJoyJunkie.com, Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. When you learn how to set boundaries and speak up for yourself you can even ask for a divorce with the utmost grace and kindness. Calmly and assertively. Yes, you have the freedom to choose a different approach. Show Highlights How to speak up for yourself! (2:48) Boundary remorse, plus we're told disproportionately, as women, “Don't rock the boat, sweep it under the rug.” (7:18) Boundaries and speaking up for yourself don't involve an ultimatum. (13:30) If you want to be heard and understood, you have to deliver your request in a way in which people can hear you. (16:40) The biggest boundary anyone can ever set  is to say, “I don't want to be married to you anymore.” (17:40) You are responsible for your intention, not your reception. (18:14) Change your perspective on what equals success: Success is being proud of the woman you were when you delivered the boundary or information. (36:40) Not sure which boundaries you need to set? Create an inventory of the things you constantly complain about. (37:52) If you are afraid about hurting someone's feelings when having hard conversations, then share that fear and express your vulnerability. (41:55) Amy's three-step process to creating boundaries. (43:43) Learn More About Amy: Amy E. Today's Episode Title: The Cure for Not Enoughness: An Interview with Amy Smith   Do You Ever Think You're Not Enough? One of the biggest things that I work on with clients is this: the fear that you’re not good enough. The fear that you’re not good enough is a fear that affects everyone, though it shows up differently for each person (for some of you, “not good enough” expresses itself as going into workaholic overachiever mode; for others it shows up as comparisons; for others it shows up as procrastination and avoidance and not finishing what you start). We all wonder at times if we are enough. This question, however, can turn into a painful filter through which we see the world and result in significant shame and sadness if left unexamined. While it is normal to have some self doubt, notably during the teenage and young adult years, it can become a painful consistent part of our life. Shame is a painful emotion, it whispers to us that “we’re not good enough” and worse yet, tells us we shouldn’t tell anyone about these parts of ourselves.   In today’s episode of Liberate Your People Pleaser I’m going to dig deep and answer some very important questions regarding today’s subject. Why do we feel/ think like we are not enough? How do we overcome this feeling or mindset that we are not Enough? How to actually improve your self-esteem and stop dragging yourself down? All of that am going to discuss in this week’s Episode with my guest Amy Smith ---------------------- Amy E. How often are you apologizing, regardless if you hurt someone or if the situation truly necessitated an “I’m sorry”?  People-pleasing includes a lot of apologizing, and it doesn’t always express what we really mean which, sometimes, isn’t so much I’m sorry as it is I’m so thankful.  I used to say I’m so sorry all the time. I’d apologize for everything—even when it’s not really what I meant. Here’s an example from my own life. When I published my book, The Happier Approach, some of my friends and family hosted book parties in their homes.  One of my dear friends from high school, Renee Mattson who spoke on the podcast about how to avoid passing your anxiety onto your kids (here’s part one and part two), hosted one of these events. She invited me to her house a little early so we could have lunch together.  When I arrived, Renee realized she’d forgotten to think about lunch. As she was running around the kitchen, prepping leftovers, I started to feel bad. She went into all this trouble—hosting an event for me—and now she’s serving me lunch!  My Monger was having a field day with this. As the words “I’m so sorry you had to make me lunch” came out of my mouth, I caught myself and simply said: “Thank you so much for making lunch. I know it wasn’t easy and I really appreciate it.” Renee’s face lit up and she said, “you are so welcome, I’m so glad you came early. I know it’s just leftovers but it gives us a chance to talk and catch up.”  In that moment, I realized that by saying thank you—which is what I truly meant—it allowed me to appreciate Renee, allowed her to feel appreciated, and empowered both of us. Had I apologized instead and said my 3 favorite words, “I am sorry”, then she would have apologized for throwing together leftovers and all the things that we people pleasers apologize for and we would have both left the conversation feeling disempowered.  Today on the show, my guest Amy E. Smith and I are talking about people-pleasing and how saying I’m sorry all the time is just one of the ways that people-pleasing shows up in our lives and how it disempowers us and keeps us disconnected from the people in our lives.  Amy is a certified confidence coach, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Founder of TheJoyJunkie.com, Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-love.  Listen to the full episode to hear: What people-pleasing is and how you can be a strong, high achiever and still be a people pleaser (raising my hand here)  My own story about people-pleasing that took place at the Brene Brown daring Way training I attended and how I handled it (or didn’t handle it) HOW to speak up for yourself and HOW to start building your inner strength around self-loyalty and worthiness.  Amy’s metaphor for self-worth which is gold Learn more about Amy E. I have a special place in my heart for this struggle because it’s both something I dealt with unknowingly for years, and because it silently affects so many people who think this is just how it is.  Working with me this way is an incredibly efficient and effective way to deal with your anxiety in the moment--without waiting for your next appointment. I have been doing this work for over 20 years and Coach in Your Pocket is the most effective and most life-changing work I have ever done. My clients are consistently blown away by how these daily check-ins combined with the monthly face-to-face video meetings create slow, lasting changes that reprogram their High Functioning Anxiety tendencies over time. Over the course of the three-month program, we meet once a month for a face-to-face session via a secure video chat, and then throughout the entire three months, you have access to me anytime you are feeling anxious, having a Monger attack, celebrating a win, or just need to check-in, and I will respond to you during my office hours (Monday through Friday, 9 am - 6 pm EST). BUSINESS BUILDING INSIGHTSYou can’t eradicate fear when you put yourself out there or when you’re trying something new in your business. But you can contend with it in a powerful way. Be fear optimized. Honor how you operate. Understand what makes you feel safe. Break down goals into mini-goals. Taking baby steps allows you to accumulate successes. The phrase “I don’t know” doesn’t move you forward. Actively search for solutions.  Acknowledge first what you're afraid of and then choose your courageous path. Look at the key players in your life and see if they are capable of the support you need and who can bring out the champion in you. One way to speak through fear is using victory poses. You accumulate confidence by taking actions. Believe in your own intrinsic value. I have to. I can't. I shouldn't.  If I don't do it, no one else will. Rules, expectations.  Usually self-inflicted can rob us of our happiness and the ability to take care of ourselves.  Instead of spending time doing the things we want to do, we fill up our schedule with the 'have to's', the obligations.  And the outcome is often resentment, failed relationships and letting ourselves go. My guest today is Amy E. Smith. Amy is a certified confidence coach, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Amy smith is a highly experienced life coach dripping with authenticity and style. At The Joy Junkie, she endeavors to help her clients gain self-confidence, stand up for themselves and live a more joyful life. “The nucleus of everything that I do is helping people stand up for themselves without being assholes.” It's two-fold really: it's the internal component of believing in your own self-worth, believing you're valuable enough to speak up for your thoughts, opinions, stances and beliefs, and the external component of what that looks like. How does it sound to establish a boundary? Without a doubt, Amy has found that the most common reason that people struggle to stand up for themselves is because they are afraid of what other people are going to think. People's' fears are shrouded in a number of topics: they're not going to accept me, love me, they're going to think I'm stupid, etc. “It's all about what someone else might put a brand on you as. ‘If they think something about me, then that must be true,' and somehow that that will equate, or negate, your own self-worth.” “What I see people do most of the time is people-please, and silence who they really are, what they really think, and what they really feel.” Amy believes there is a huge fallacy around what it means to stand up for you and stand up for your convictions. In many situations we silence ourselves, because we have convinced ourselves that speaking up is rude or aggressive. As a basic jumping off point, one of the things that you can start doing as a sort of check-and-balance in the different relationships in your life, is to always ask yourself: is my silence making me a liar? Is my silence giving me a false sense of compliance? Amy helps her clients realize: “I don't have to be a dick. I can decline that sort of conversation with the utmost kindness and grace.” Amy has another tool, which she calls, “If this, then that,” and it's where we take a circumstance and we create a truth from it. The idea is to take the negative stories we tell ourselves, such as, “If I don't get this job, then I'm a failure,” and remove their charge: “If I don't get this job, then I didn't get the job.” She also has a quick and dirty tip for building confidence: “One of the fastest avenues to confidence is to start really doing things that you're proud of.” Start looking at what you need to do today, or how you can conduct yourself today, that you will actually be proud. We need little wins that create a compound effect. One of the biggest shifts that Amy believes we can make to alter our relationship to confidence is unpacking our concept around self-worth. The idea is conceptual. Currently, most of us evaluate our self-worth based on accomplishment, adoration or accolades from other people. It's not just something that we have. Amy advocates that that worth is inherent. It is something that we already have. “What if you were already worthy, you were already valuable and enough as is, and everything else in life were simply experiences?” Through her own experiences, Amy has developed a new management system: the way in which she manages self-talk and hardship. One major piece is her allies, what she likes to call her soul tribe. She knows that, when something happens in her life, she will need to tell that story to a few people in her soul tribe to process it. There's another element: core value system. Amy teaches that your core values are elements that you need in your world in order for it to be fulfilled. “Am I honoring the things that I know bring me joy?” If you head over to Amy's website, TheJoyJunkie.com, you'll see a free e-workbook and audiobook called Stand Up For Yourself Without Being a Dick. It's nine different, very actionable challenges that are designed to help you catapult your self-love and self-confidence. Amy and The Joy Junkie stand for everything that I stand for here at The Bold Life Movement, so I'm really excited to share her message with everyone. Listen, enjoy and check out The Joy Junkie!   SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What are some of the top reasons that Amy hears people struggling to stand up for themselves? How to be more assertive if you've created this pattern of people-pleasing in your life? Does Amy have tools she gives her clients to help them cultivate more confidence? How is Amy implementing some of the stuff she learned through her own personal development path to get back to her baseline joy, when it seems like stuff is going wrong? What are tools that she uses? What did the process of becoming a coach look like for Amy?
