I'm not sure what you thought about when you were growing up. I dreamt of a veil, getting married and then having kids. That was the dream and I didn't think about another way, why would I? No until I met my husband and because of aggressive cancer treatment it leave him infertile, not able to have his own children, and so we researched into sperm donation. If it wasn't for the gift of sperm donors we wouldn't have been able to have a family. This episode raises the issues of a declining donation list in Australia and I speak with a sperm donor to understand why he donated and what it means to him. When you're on a fertility journey the one thing you have in common with the other person is the desire to become parents. We all have a story to share, even if you don't think it matters, I assure you, your story matters to someone, your journey is important and to share it is the gift so it strengthens the next person to continue and push through. I had the privilege of hearing and reading Beck and Leonie's story. It's a journey that would leave you in awe of the special bond that two women will have forever. Beck has a condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which means she was born without a uterus but has her ovaries and can produce eggs. Shona is a senior marketing executive at an ASX Top 100 company in Sydney. For as long as she remembers, she knew she wanted children. Every individual, every couple's journey is different while trying to conceive. June marks 40 years of IVF and I had the pleasure of speaking with the 1st generation of IVFlings*. I caught up with Candice Thum Nèe Reed Australia's first IVF baby, born in June 1980. She is a former journalist turned community developer and a mother of two children. Married to a Kiwi she now lives in Auckland and Rebecca Featherstone Jelen conceived at Bourn Hall in England, where the world's first IVF baby was conceived. Rebecca juggles a busy Sydney life with her two children. After a career in artist and event management, she recently completed further study and now works with IVF Australia. It's incredible how much has changed since then, today we discuss what it was like growing up as an IVF baby, navigating teenage years and high school and dealing with awkward questions. Together Candice and Rebecca are ideally placed to advocate for change in fertility health education and awareness having lived it all their lives.
