In this special family-themed episode we're delighted to welcome sisters Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, renowned figures in the quilting community. Both have dedicated more than four decades to the art of quilting, earning numerous accolades and inspiring countless enthusiasts worldwide.Pat Holly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, during her father's tenure as a flight instructor in the Korean War. Though the family relocated to Michigan when she was just six weeks old, Pat proudly embraces her Hoosier roots. She pursued biology at the University of Michigan and later worked as an electron microscope technician at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. It was there she met her husband, a pathology resident. Following their marriage, Pat returned to the University of Michigan School of Art to study graphic design, weaving, and fabric design. Her fascination with textile creation and historical textiles from around the world continues to influence her quilting designs. Sue Nickels was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and spent most of her life in Ann Arbor. She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Art. Sue married in 1976 and welcomed her first daughter in 1978. Inspired by her sister Pat's baby quilt gift, Sue embarked on her quilting journey by enrolling in a class at a local quilt shop, where only hand techniques were taught at the time. Over the years, she transitioned to machine quilting and has been teaching machine techniques for more than 30 years. Sue's dedication to quilting has earned her numerous awards, including the 1998 AQS Best of Show for "The Beatles Quilt," a collaboration with Pat.Beyond their collaborative projects, Sue and Pat have contributed significantly to the quilting community through teaching, writing, and sharing their expertise. Sue has authored several books and has developed her own rulers for machine quilting. Pat's work reflects her deep appreciation for historical textiles and her background in graphic design and weaving. (3:10) How did Pat and Sue learn to sew? Their mother of course! Hear the story of the genesis of their sewing/quilting careers. Were they good at sharing their only sewing machine? Hear about that right here! Oh, learn about the Troll doll cloths too!(6:00) What inspired each of them to transition from being sewists to quilters? Their grandmother and a special baby quilt!(9:14) Learn about the influences of Illinois Quilters Inc. and Jinny Beyer, Ruth McDowell, Harriet Hargrave and Gwen Marston.(11:27) Sue, learned to quilt from Harriet Hargrave's book “Heirloom Machine Quilting” with the help of Pat who had taken a workshop form Harriet in the Chicago area. This was in 1987 and other quilters in your area had not discovered machine quilting. Was it hard to make the transition to machine quilting?(15:43) Both Pat and Sue talk about the influence of Gwen Marston and the Beaver Island Quilt Retreat.(18:40)In the late 80”s Pat moved to Muskegon, MI and began the PALS (Patchers at the Lakeshore) Quilt Guild. Here she talks about this move and the genesis of this endearing group of quilters.(20:09) The sisters talk about what it's like to collaborate on their work…and what it's like to win awards together.(23:42) What moment or event stands out for Pat and Sue? Well…there are many and then there's the Beatles Quilt. And for Pat it was her miniature quilts.(26:53) Learn more about the Beatles Quilt of 1998 Best of Show. It's beginning and how they created it.(30:56) Both Sue and Pat are BERNINA Ambassadors. They talk about how they became a part of the first class of Ambassadors and why the program means so very much to them.(34:35) Pat and Sue talk about their special exhibit “The Two of Us” featured at Quilt Week at Paducah 2025. Learn about what's in the exhibit and how they'll be implementing QR codes. Also to be features will be the Beatles Quilt and Pat's miniatures.(38:37) Learn some never before shared secrets about this exhibit and Pat's miniatures!(42:03) Any future sewists or quilters in their family?(44:51) What's next for Pat and Sue and what are their dreams?!(45:54) What didn't I ask. Sue talks about when she taught at Harriet Hargrave's retreat, and when Gwen Marston asked Pat and Sue to take over Grew Marston's retreats and called them The Holly Girl's Retreats. Pat mentions that they are both amazed at what quilting has given them and the places it's taken them.(48:23) Do you want to reach out to Pat or Sue. In this episode, I'm joined by sisters Hannah and Em. Hannah is a mother to three children: Iris, Oaka, and Charlie. Iris and Oaka are angel babies, who Hannah very sadly lost during her pregnancies with them, before she had Charlie, who is now 20 months old. So I'd obviously like to include a trigger warning here as we do discuss Hannah's story of miscarriage and pregnancy loss at a few points throughout today's chat. I've put some resources below that I encourage you to visit if this episode brings anything up for you. Hannah's story in episode 4 touches on pregnancy and parenting after multiple pregnancy losses. She also shares her motherhood journey with Charlie: from birth, breastfeeding, sleep challenges, and relationship and friendship shifts.  Em is a mother to an almost 3-year-old son, Wilbur. In episode 5, Em shared her experience of breaking up with her partner who she'd been with since they were in high school due to his infidelity. All of this happening while Em was navigating new motherhood with a young toddler. She speaks about navigating being single for the first time since she was 16, dating as a single parent, navigating co-parenting, and her motherhood journey with Wilbur.  Sharing these things that aren't spoken about very often is so important in others feeling less alone, and I thank you for your honesty Hannah and Em.  Today's chat is such a raw and open conversation about their experience of growing up through their parents' hostile divorce, which had a massive impact on them, with both of them living alone in commission housing and having to work to get themselves through their final years of high school as a result. Following the divorce, both of their relationship's with their mother was impacted as well, and they don't have her as a part of their lives today. So they speak about how that has been in their own motherhood journeys. They also touch on how their parents' divorce has influenced their attitudes to their own parenting choices and styles, and on Em's outlook to her co-parenting relationship with her son's father. We also catch up on how parenthood has shifted for them in the 8-9 months since we recorded and how everything is going for them now. You can listen to Hannah's story in episode 4 of season 1 here. In this episode, I'm joined by Ash (he/him), a father living in Hobart, Tasmania, with his partner Chelsea (she/her) and their two-year-old son, Luen. Ash shares their journey of becoming parents. Ash and Chelsea went through the process of IVF for 2.5-3 years and sadly experienced a miscarriage in the process. They made the move from Melbourne to Tasmania during their IVF journey and we speak about the process of transporting their embryos over there. Ash's unwavering support for Chelsea during her pregnancy, labour, and birth is a significant part of their story. Chelsea had an induced labour due to reduced amniotic fluid, which resulted in a swift but painful experience. They had a wonderful obstetrician and felt supported throughout the transformative process, and Ash got to catch Luen as he was being born. The labour and birth became a deeply spiritual journey and the most profound experience of Ash's life. The initial month of parenthood created a magical atmosphere, even through the sleep deprivation. Ash reflects on how fatherhood has changed him, forcing him to confront himself and become the best version of himself for his child. As Chelsea manages her own thriving hairdressing business, Ash took on the primary care for the first two and a half years of Luen's life and is now transitioning back into his art and music career. Balancing his responsibilities as a father, partner and retaining his creative practice has shown his dedication and enduring love for his family. Ash also talks about witnessing their child's unique personality emerge each day. The joy he finds in seeing their son grow and thrive reflects the incredible journey they have embarked upon as parents. Clarke, rich and powerful people doing awful things, blackmail and child abuse, symbolism, MK-Ultra, the Internet losing information, psychopaths dominating the world, Bush Sr., the CIA (& Playboy), Jimmy Saville, manipulations of the Western world, the Shining and child abuse, and Russia. We also get into some topics that greatly connect to episode #007 of Divulgence, so be sure to listen to that episode (before or after this episode, it being our most successful episode to date – see link below). Also, Troy shares more on his HongKongywood career in the movie/acting business and his experiences around Asia, the glory in being one that conflicts and battles with Hollywood, Ryan O'Neil going from Hollywood golden boy to Hollywood's worst father, the fentanyl problem and China's answer to the opium wars, and Sean shares on his crush on Channing Tatum (of Magic Mike, Magic Mike 2).    ** ALL support is much appreciated, in any shape or form. When you tell your kid not to touch the hot stove, you're not saying no. You're just planting the idea of doing it into their head. It's crazy, right? In today's episode, I talk about how the way we frame the things we say to our kids affects what they do and what they don't.

Tips to breeeeathe through the ever-present external noise and find a little more quietude. Good advice for everyday, but especially this time of year (pre-holiday bustle). Pratya- what? Pratyahara is a Sanskrit word meaning "withdrawal of the senses.” The two root Sanskrit words of pratyahara are prati, which means “to withdraw,” and ahara, which means “food;” in this case, “food” refers to any external stimuli that you consume with your mind. For me, it's super difficult to tune out the external noise and it takes LOTS of practice and daily quiet time to calm my crazy monkey mind. Can anyone else relate? Me, Mom & The Mouse

This week we’re talking about 1941’s Dumbo! A movie that’s a great exploration of the pain of marginalization…and which also thoughtlessly marginalizes some real-life groups of people. Listen as we discuss the incredible “Pink Elephants” number, this movie’s origins as a “Roll-A-Book”, and why we still adore this movie despite its problematic qualities.
