181. Multiple stress fractures to podium finish at UTA100k with Juliette Soule Juliette Soule is a Sydney based trail runner, born in Christchurch NZ. Juliette has surged onto the scene debuting her first 100k during COVID times and most recently placing 2nd at Ultra Trail Kosciuszko 100km in November 2024. But her journey to the podium was anything but smooth. Over the span of 1.5 years, Juliette faced three major bone stress injuries while pushing her ultra-training just that bit too much. Her comeback is a story of both grit and learning. As well as a mindset shift that has forced her to transform her love for running from an obsessive pursuit to a more balanced and sustainable passion. This is something Juliette admits she is still working on achieving. In this episode, Juliette reflects on the training errors that led to her injuries and shares the hard truths of taking time off and rebuilding. She gives us an exclusive look into her Kosci training strategy, which included running just three days a week, and how she's working to prevent future injuries. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, Juliette's insights on training smarter and redefining success are invaluable. It was an absolute pleasure to have Juliette on the show—her story is equal parts inspiring and thought provoking. A report into the viability of Christchurch hosting the Commonwealth Games took 14 hours to write, after it was requested in January. The report, commissioned by Mayor Phil Mauger, from Council and Christchurch NZ recommended Christchurch avoid holding a standalone event. Newstalk ZB has revealed it cost just over $1000 for staff time. Mauger told John MacDonald the report was a big job for Christchurch NZ, which didn't need rushing. He says the city wasn't trying to host the Games sometime in the next year, so they just fitted it when they could. Mauger joined John MacDonald in studio for their regular catchup, giving his thoughts on the Games' report, high rises in the CBD, and his request the Government does more to address the pokie machine harm in Christchurch. A second Commonwealth Games in Christchurch is unlikely for now. Mayor Phil Mauger requested a report on the viability of bidding for the event on the 50th anniversary of the 1974 edition's opening ceremony. It recommends Christchurch doesn't host a standalone event until a national bid is considered. Christchurch NZ's Head of Destination and Attraction, Loren Aberhart told Mike Hosking there's accommodation and transport constraints associated with hosting, and many extra costs. She says the city would need to invest in sporting infrastructure that it doesn't need in the long term. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Christchurch NZ is keeping the door open to SailGP, hoping racing can happen again in Lyttelton next year. Last weekend's event has been marred by debate on measures to protect dolphins, with SailGP CEO Russell Coutts casting doubt on future hosting plans. A dolphin sighting meant Saturday's race was cancelled. Christchurch NZ's Loren Aberhart says a contract's been signed, but they are still open to discussions. "But I think from our perspective, when you look at the way it went yesterday- it was incredible. And Pete Burling texted me saying it was the best SailGP he's ever done." In this episode of Untidy we talk to Dr Sarah McKay. Originally from Christchurch NZ, Sarah is an Oxford University-educated neuroscientist, author, speaker and director of Think Brain's suite of online training programs. Sarah now resides in Sydney with her husband and two boys. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We delve into the findings from Sarah's recent book ‘Baby Brain' - a term often used to describe the perceived cognitive decline a lot of new mums experience. We wanted to know exactly what was going on upstairs after we had our babies… Why were we putting fridge items in the pantry? And why did Hannah forget how to spell her own name after having her son? Sarah unpacks the science behind what actually happens neurologically during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the research may surprise you! Have we been scammed?! We talk about the need to re-frame the connotations around ‘baby brain', and why the term ‘supermum' needs to be banished from our collective vocabulary. I've got that old saying about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing in my head today. And it's why I think we need to seriously consider creating a Super City by merging the Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri councils.I've thought this for some time and I'm thinking about it again today for a couple of reasons. The first, is the uproar in Lincoln over this new housing development - 1700 new houses. The Carter Family is behind it. They want to increase the number of houses in the Lincoln area by more than 50 percent and chew up a huge chunk of farmland in the process. So a truckload more houses and people, in an area with one high school and one medical centre which is already full and not taking on any new patients. And this is why people already living in Lincoln aren't happy about it.This is where the ‘left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing' comes into it.You may have heard about the Greater Christchurch Partnership. This is a group that all of the councils have an involvement with - plus all the usual agencies like Christchurch NZ. And its job is to think about the long-term growth and development of the Greater Christchurch area over the next 30 years. How the population is going to grow, where all the extra people are going to live. All that stuff. Now this proposed development at Lincoln is in an area outside the Greater Christchurch Partnership's urban boundary, so it's going to be up to the Selwyn District Council and only the Selwyn District Council to decide whether this thing goes ahead or not.Which is nuts, especially when you've got the Christchurch City Council competing with Selwyn - and Waimakariri too for that matter - trying to get more people to come and live in the central city in Christchurch. Left hand-right hand. Working in isolation. The other reason I'm thinking about merging the three councils and creating a new Super City council is the new stadium, Te Kaha.As we know, it's looking like the Christchurch City Council is going to have to come up with a truckload more money - possibly as much as $50 million. The Government isn't interested in putting more into it. So the Council's going to have to front up, if it wants the thing to become reality.Surely, it would be in a much better position if the rating bases of Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakaritri were brought into one big pot by merging them all into one? We've heard this week from some people living in Selwyn and Waimakariri who don't think their rates money should be going into the stadium - so you can bet your bottom dollar that some of their local councillors won't be voting in favour of that. Because, as we know, politicians get spooked about brassing people off - especially when there's an election on the horizon. So get all the councils under one roof and that wouldn't be an issue. It's a no-brainer, as far as I'm concerned. The Auckland Super City brought together seven city and district councils, and the regional council. There was a bit of noise when it happened nearly 12 years ago. But I think over time it's shown that it can work.Auckland these days has a mayor and 20 councillors. Christchurch city has a mayor and 15 councillors. Waimakariri has a mayor and 10 councillors and Selwyn has a mayor and 11 councillors. So Auckland, a mayor and 20 councillors. Greater Christchurch - three mayors and 36 councillors. A bit over the top for the size of the place, don't you think? I think so.Here in Canterbury, there were once all manner of borough councils - but they were swallowed up over time. Another amalgamation we've had here happened in 2006 when Banks Peninsula council joined up with Christchurch City. The issue then was that Banks Peninsula didn't have a big enough population to get the rates it needed to operate properly. Selwyn and Waimakariri don't have that problem - they've...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shhhhh! Do you feel like that sometimes when you hear the word thrush or yeast infection? What about bacterial vaginosis (BV)? Open the floor and swallow me up! However it's a common in women's health and yet we don't discuss it, perhaps we don't feel the need to discuss it because there's lots of over the counter medication we can purchase. Or is it just like fertility, miscarriages, abortion and other women's health are taboo subjects? I'd like to change that of course, so I speak with Cassandra Woollett to open up the convestation. Cassandra is a Fertility Educator accredited with Natural Fertility NZ who runs her own Fertility clinic in Christchurch NZ. She works with clients throughout NZ and has a large International client base. She works on line with women and their partners to help them learn about their fertility to either maximise their chances of conceiving or to avoid pregnancy in a natural way, teaching the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family planning. Cassandra is also the National Clinical Supervisor for Natural Fertility NZ and is responsible for: auditing NZ Fertility Educators professional practice, training of new educators, providing ongoing training and clinical support to educators. She has been an educator for 21 years. Cassandra originally trained as a Registered Nurse working in the hospital system and then as a Public Health Nurse working in schools and with families. Her true passion is in teaching and educating women and their partners about the menstrual cycle and male and female fertility and then seeing them use this information to reach their fertility goals. There is concern for thousands of people in Christchurch who have lost their jobs due to Covid-19.The chief executive of economic development and tourism agency, Christchurch NZ, Joanna Norris, told Chris Lynch there has been a 43 per cent increase in people in the city on the jobseeker allowance."We've got really strong performance in terms of the resilience of our economy, but we also know there has been a large number of people adversely impacted by Covid-19," she said.Norris said that represented about 7000 people who had lost their jobs this year. "It's that group we are particularly worried about."She said the organisation was developing a recovery plan for the city, which she hoped will help support businesses to create new jobs."I think it's a matter of identifying where the jobs are right now," she said."We know we need new health workers...we know we are going to need more software developers...we are going to need more people with high-value software engineering skills and so we need to make sure we are training for a full range of careers."She expected the economy to stay in recession next year and possibly into 2022.Joanna Norris also defended the appointment of former Regenerate Christchurch chief executive, Ivan Iafeta, as social recovery lead for the Ōtautahi Christchurch Socio-Economic Recovery Plan.Regenerate Christchurch was disestablished in June 2020, but had previously faced criticism for not delivering results for the city over its existence."[Ivan] has a great deal of expertise in the social recovery area, a great deal of expertise in recovery more generally," said Norris."I feel very confident that the work delivered through that role will be effective, will be efficient and will use resources wisely."Listen above.

Our first Queen of Crime is Ngaio Marsh, who was a prolific New Zealand author of the Golden Age, penning 32 books featuring her dapper detective "Handsome Alleyn," as well as a plethora of short stories, stage plays, and non-fiction. We have chosen her witty and surprising novel A Surfeit of Lampreys to hook you in to her work, if you happen to be unfamiliar with it. It's a good one!You can learn more about Ngaio Marsh here. Here is a link to the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch NZ, and here is a link to the Ngaio Marsh House and Heritage Trust. We think it's gross, but if you want to learn more about jewellery made out of human hair, have at 'er. Here is a link to Ngaio Marsh's autobiography, Black Beech and Honeydew. You can read all about how King Henry I was killed by a surfeit of lampreys here. While we're at it, let's get some background on humorism, and also on lampreys. And, just to get even more macabre, here is an article about The Hand of Glory. No one expects The Hand of Glory! Thanks as always to Rob Muir for our theme song, original intro music and all things audio. And thanks to you for listening!

In this episode, Horace and Oliver discuss Horace's visit to Christchurch, New Zealand for the ITSNZ T-Tech 19 conference. For those that don't know, Christchurch suffered a massive earthquake in 2011, levelling most of downtown and killing 181 people. The city has been rebuilt with great cycle/micromobility infrastructure, which has led to Lime Scooters and cycling as a modal being incredibly popular in the city.In this episode, we unpack:- why the concentration of political power in cities makes them more likely to be able to quickly adapt to micromobility changes- how the earthquake parallels the expected increase in volatility in environment we're likely to see from climate change, and how this benefits micromobility.- how sunk costs in infrastructure can and will hinder the adoption of micromobility, and why this is a mistake.- How the conformability of small vehicles allows them to permeate further into the city substrate in a way that larger vehicles cannot- How transport changes how we relate to cities, and the possibilities that we see with them.- How asset-light models suit an experience driven culture, and how this is a reflection of new forms of status.Be sure to check out micromobility.io for all the latest, sign up to our newsletter, and get tickets for Micromobility Europe which is happening on October 1st. A first ever before heard interview with legendary mountaineer and philanthropist Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to stand atop Mount Everest in 1953. Our accomplishments mean very little if we do not feel and express gratitude and humility. Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to stand atop the world's highest mountain with Tenzing Norgay. His legacy, however, is in all that he gave back to the Sherpa people and the Everest region of Nepal. Also in this episode, in March of this year a terrorist in Christchurch, New Zealand burst into to two mosques and killed 50 innocent people. NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern swiftly moved to deny the man the notoriety he expected by making it known that she would never mention him by name. "He may have sought notoriety but we in New Zealand will give him nothing -- not even his name." Music for the episode comes from the Garcia Birthday Band found on the freemusicarchive. They can be found at gbblive.com. Information on Sir Edmund Hillary's legacy can be found at himalayantrust.org. Info on The Explorers Club can be found at explorers.org.

It’s a delicate subject these days since, as a society, we are contemplating the impact of colonizers. We gather with gratitude on traditional Cree lands that are now a part of Treaty Six and shared by many nations. A treaty is an inheritance, a responsibility and a relationship. May we be good neighbours to one another, good stewards to our planet and good ancestors to our children. On this episode of Church on KTALK, Sean Reay & Rachelle Call will join Drew & Jesse in the Foyer. We're going to be talking about Projection and Mirroring, what it is and looks like in our lives. We're also going to be talking about the "divine matrix" and the mirror-like nature of our reality and how that plays into our interactions with others. We'll also get into the topics about Personal and Conscious Sovereignty, and whether or not we live in a society where we are free range slaves in an engorged capitalistic society where we exist to fulfill the dreams and desires of our employers and overlords at the expense of our own existence. We'll talk about how France just passed a law that makes it illegal for your boss to call or email after hours. How would a law like that work in the US? We'll also wade into some of the current topics of the week, including Helicopter/Bulldozer Parenting and the College Cheating scandal. We'll also be talking about violent extremism that is permeating our society, and the heartbreaking aftermath of the terrorist attack in Christchurch NZ. It's gonna be a great conversation in the foyer, we hope you'll join us!
David Arkenstone Barrett... What is happening in Antarctica? Why is the ice melting and what is it revealing? And why has there been so much interest in the Antarctic recently and what might we soon learn. And do these 'ancient pyramids of Antarctica' hold secrets that are still being hidden from us? Why is there suddenly so much interest in this world of ice? And might there be evidence of an advanced, ancient civilization at the 'bottom of the world'? Something Very Strange Is Going On In Antarctica, but how and why is this connected to the city of Christchurch? And what if it was possible that New Zealand now occupies the same area, location and energy as Atlantis once did... and if so how? Metaphysical entrepreneur David Arkenstone Barnett has been a researcher into the UFO phenomena for over 30 years. From his first official encounter with a USO (Unidentified Submerged Object) whilst serving in the Navy in 1987 to his own personal close encounter of the third kind in the South Island of New Zealand, David has had contact with intelligent beings both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial in origin who have helped him to uncover and understand the UFO/Atlantis connection in both Antarctica and in Canterbury NZ. He has spent 30 years in the security industry, but is also a photographer, artist, professional singer and lover of life, and has lived in Christchurch NZ for over 20 years.
